Title: How do you keep an overview of the value of your coins?
Post by: machnetic on March 17, 2014, 02:06:24 PM
Hi,

I would love to hear your feedback on how you handle keeping track of the value of your coins. I have been investing in various coins on several exchanges and invested in numerous coins ever since I started trading last December. I noticed that holding on to coins can be profitable, but also cost you dearly.

Please share the tools you use. Let me know what you like about them. Also, let me know if you have suggestions for me, as I am working on a tool to help keeping track of your coins. You can read more about that at get.machnetic.com (http://get.machnetic.com). I'll need beta testers some time soon in the next few months to help me prepare for launch, sign up if you'd like to join that beta.

I started building a simple database in FileMaker to track my purchases and value of coins over time... A database seems like the best tool to track this kind of thing.

Could you tell me a bit more about that? How long did it take you to build it? Did you try any other tools or services? What would you build on your service if you would have a bit more time?

Well iam not into quite alot of alt coins so it gets easier for me ;)

I do hold dogecoins, and few litecoins  but i generally don't keep a track on them as i have quite a faith in them and will hold then until their golden time lolz  ;D so i just have to keep an overview on my bitcoins which is not a big deal  !!

it is the most common solution I found so far: people either do it by head (not very accurate), on notepad, or in a spreadsheet. All of those seem like a lot of hassle, especially if you have multiple coins on various exchanges or wallets..

Google spreadsheet with some scripting that I did to pull prices from coinbase, crytsy, mintpal etc via their api and then set off the functions to run on auto timers

Well, that would solve a lot of thinking too:D

On Reddit some people are mentioning useful tools too (http://www.reddit.com/r/CryptoCurrency/comments/20moxm/i_am_trying_to_ditch_excel_for_keeping_track_of/):
coinfinance.com
myaltcoins.com
multibalance.info
cryptofolio.info

I knew most of them, but didn't know all of them. If you have more to add to the list, please feel free to do so. If you use any of them, share what you like about it, and what you'd like to see improved/changed/added:)

I don't keep track of the fiat value of my coins, just a rough estimate of the coins I have in my mind. I am in cryptos for long term, wouldn't matter much if it is $600 yesterday or $630 the day before (same for the other alts I have)

I don't really monitor the value closely for 2 reasons.

1. I don't have much bitcoin.
2. I am going to hold my bitcoin for a long period of time, so I don't really care about the short-term price fluctuation.
