Americans who own a cryptocurrency has almost doubled from 7.95% in 2018 to 14.4% in 2019, an increase of 81% in one year,
according to a new survey. That means roughly 36.5 million Americans own some form of crypto.

In addition, the survey by Finder said,

While an increase of people with a cryptocurrency is positive for the industry,
the vast majority of Americans are not investing in digital currencies.

Since US regulations make it more difficult for citizens to participate in crypto investments the growth shows an underlying interest.
If regulations loosen up in the coming year this could spur growth for the global crypto market.

What do you think?

If the data gathered through the survey is upon a good number of sample then without doubt the growth is big. Most of the time such a large scale sample won't be collected, just a few thousands were questioned and the average will be taken. As in the statement if this has happened, then on regulating the cryptocurrencies there'll be big growth in the adoption and usage paving path for next level of cryptocurrency growth.

That is a big change after 1 year. Trump is known as being against the cryptocurrencies but the interest in Bitcoin of the people of the U.S.A is increasing very quickly. If it goes continually like this, the government may not think of banning cryptos not ever.

Are there exact statistics on these studies? A lot of recent studies have been really bad, with there being a ton of issues like a extremely low sample size, or only testing a certain age group that might be really into technology and new things, I've never really trusted any of the articles showcasing number, seems to change every week.

Yeah exactly - although we can't really ignore the fact that crypto-currencies have definitely been getting bigger in recent years, I mean just today, our first global crypto-currency that was created by a country was released. Big times.

Not only Americans but also in some other countries too.  Many people hook with bitcoin especially with its online transaction and easy to use. They say that many men are users of bitcoin than women, and I think it is right because I know most of the men using bitcoin than women because, in my opinion, most women are not that techy thing than men.

Even though KYC regulations were strengthened and enforced the number of US Citizens who use cryptocurrency and bitcoin will not dwindle. Instead it will continue to increase in number since US citizens are more likely to be enticed when it is regulated, they feel secure. Thus regulations have its own advantage on the increase of potential cryptocurrency users in the United States. This will not only be applied to US but also to other countries.

For a year, that number is actually surprising and 14.4% isn't a small number either. But now I think things would undergo some real changes. Government and other institutions start to adopt blockchain technologies. If US Government decided to follow what China is planning to do, which is to create a new cryptocurrency, there might be an explicit ban to bitcoin and other altcoin, only permitting enterprises to use their own cryptocurrency, which could significantly impact the market. But it's still too early to say this though, it's far from happening, but is a possibility.

It’s great that Americans keep up with the people of China and Europe in their involvement in crypto. This is a great sign for the crypto market and its success in the future.

i have seen people on the street with a sign saying 'please answer a survey about charities'.. the results are that a high majority of respondants do donate. not because high population donates. but because those who do not are going to avoid entering into the survey to avoid embarrassment/shame of being seen as heartless

in my town whenever people see someone with a charity asking for donations, the common thing to say just to walk passed them is 'we already donated'. not only does it avoid having to put our hands in our pockets, but also avoids the guy stalking us trying to convince us, and avoids them shouting out bout how we have not donated but should.

the survey are based on like 2000 people out of ~327million.
these surveys usually would be mail bombed to known people in a certain industry, and also exclude certain population groups.

take for instance americas 327mill population ~60m are below the age of 15years and 50mill are above 65..
usually surveys exclude these age brackets meaning a third of the population is excluded

so if say 33mill say yes on a survey of such the actual % is not 10% but actually more like 6.6% if it was a true population survey no matter the question

then we get back to further shrinking down the survey by respondants. not everyone is interestd in filing out a survey about their finances. so this could cut the pool of respondants in more than half whereby the poor/uninterested in investments
wont respond. thus even AT BEST it would bring results of 3.3% true population.. though a survey site would still try to presume 10% said yes

its much like going to a trump rally and doing a popularity poll. ofcourse results would be majority fangirling over trump

Despite the US regulation making it harder for the citizen to own coins, the number of people investing to it are growing. Its time for them to see that is harder to stop the adoption, the more people sees bitcoin and altcoins a way to store their wealth than just on banks. They are not winning with this type of regulations, they are the resistance to this new development.

It is really interesting to see that the number of women is much more than men's. I wonder if men are not much aware of cryptocurrencies or not. However, it is good to see that the number of American people who own crypto is rising every year.

Indeed, maybe they finally realize the benefits and advantage of using bitcoin. Its indeed a great news for everyone because of the improving and growing population of people who owns crypto like bitcoin despite of different issues and problems that bitcoin had faced in the last few years. Well some people underestimate the power of women and now they just prove that they can do whatever man can do. For sure in the next years the number of women who is aware of cryptocurrency will increase. Just like men, women is also capable on earning profit because of bitcoin, we can't change the fact that this generation is already adopting anything that involves technology.

That's an encouraging statistic. Of course that if regulatipns will get loosen up people will feel much better about investing into cryptocurrencies and not look at it likr as an exotic, risky investment that it is not available to them.

I'm quite surprised to see so many women holding crypto. Well.. on crypto twitter there are a lot of girls promoting branding themselves as crypto enthusiasts so maybe  that's not that big of a surprise.

Would agree that the number of people, not only in America, owning crypto is increasing rapidly. Also no doubt that majority were boys. It may not be that accurate but it only shows the continuous growth of cryptocurrency which is good for us and crypto itself. Although regulations were implemented, it can't stop people from adopting crypto. This growth is not only limited in America, in other countries like my country, crypto is also starting to be known by the locals.
Population might be growing but it will still be hard for crypto to reach the majority of the population. We still need more time to reach that level of growth.

I feel like since the late 2017 when the price of bitcoin reached high numbers and the general public was talking about it, a lot of people were introduced to the whole crypto concept and it really took off from there, and since then i feel like there have been a lot of projects and crypto related things immerge, so it comes to no surprise that more and more people are invested or contributing in some way or another in the crypto market, i mean from many random people i have talk to about bitcoin they know a lot about it compared to 2 years ago.

Since US regulations make it more difficult for citizens to participate in crypto investments the growth shows an underlying interest.
If regulations loosen up in the coming year this could spur growth for the global crypto market.

With 2,068 participants commissioned by Finder they came to a conclusion that 36.5 million Americans own some form of crypto ::).
If regulations loosen up you will see more growth in the market not only in the US but globally.

since we are talking about statistics, here is another one for you. 90% of these statistics are completely wrong and biased. it is simply because they never spend much time in selection process, which happens to be the most important and most time consuming step of conducting a research. so instead of spending time and money on selecting a good and diversified group of people they simply choose to do the simplest thing and do a random choosing and end up with false results.

Although the US government rejects cryptocurrency to their country, that does not mean they are strictly forbidden or threatened by law, as in other countries that prohibit Cryptocurrency or bitcoin but can still use it well so far.

yep. the door-to-door /street surveys are the worse
without even answering a question i can predict a survey about employment would show higher unemployment on the survey. just for the simple fact that guys doing the surveys are asking people who are walking around shops between 9-5mon-fri... the time when most working people are in offices/factories working, and not free to just aimlessly be walking around town with spare time to answer surveys

surveys are not ever accurate and should never be treated as fact

Doesn't matter if the study is fully accurate or not. What it does matter is that we see a significant rising among Americans when it comes to adopting cryptocurrencies which is awesome as we all know that in USA cryptocurrencies are not so popular because of the taxes, restriction and a lot of impediments when it comes to trading.

In the end I think all over the world there is a rising of people adopting and using cryptocurrencies and its good to see that women's started to use it to , that mean that some campaigns of promoting Bitcoin works really good. ( Medicine promo especially ).

No matter how tight the government is in implementing rules against cryptocurrency, it's still up on the people's discretion and prerogative to choose what to do. People are already enlightened and exposed to crypto making them want to do it and have it more. They already knew what are the advantages and the good side of cryptocurrency, how profitable bitcoin could be once started. Also, people are already suffocated with the government's interference with their lives that's why some cryptocurrency's decentralization like bitcoin is such a relief.

You're obviously not from the states, because it is still legal to invest in bitcoin and everything else except for ico's.  The only regulatory pressure anyone is getting is facebook with libra.  There are also some laws pertaining to exchanges which is why Binance doesn't provide service to all states, but it isn't a nationwide issue.  So it's nowhere near as bad as you think.

I honestly don't think there are anywhere near that many women owning crypto, but I could be wrong.  Worldwide that isn't a huge number, but it seems like the overwhelming majority of people who do own crypto are male, and that number probably isn't even that large.  Interesting study, tho.

This study is of no use, until it gives the distribution of the Bitcoin ownership. We don't know how much each of these individuals own. 14.4% of the American population is close to 45 million. If each of them owns around BTC0.01 ($94 as per the current exchange rate), then we can assume that BTC450,000 is being held by small-scale cryptocurrency users within the United States. And that sounds quite large for me, considering that the current circulating supply is only around BTC18,000,000.

I would take these results with a grain of salt.

The authors provided no information about their methodology. In particular, we have no idea whether their respondents are representative of the population. If it was an online survey targeting Millennials, the results are going to be heavily skewed since they are drawing conclusions based on a very small sample.

I have a feeling the numbers are being drastically overstated.

If the survey is such an authentic one without any manipulations, then the data is a very impressive one. In spite the government regulations and restrictions concerning cryptocurrencies, there is still such demand for cryptocurrencies.
But then again this data is not trustworthy, there is no proof backing it.

Basically if the OP will add the accumulation or even the average accumulation of the population this topic will be trusted. For me, the Americans aren't just focusing on bitcoin but to the entire crypto itself, and the rising number of the population who owns crypto is a significance of huge cryptocurrency market adoption that will yield to increase in market price. With regards to the 450,000BTC, I am pretty sure there's some whales already having huge volume of BTC in America in these case, the population isn't necessary.

as for these stats, if it were true then bitcoin price should have been a lot higher than this. a nearly 15% adoption in US alone means price of at least $500k for this limited supply currency! the only reason why it is still at this very low price levels is that the adoption is still around 1%.

Americans need to show government support for cryptocurrencies, after which the adoption of cryptocurrencies will go at a very fast pace. A significant positive impact on the introduction of cryptocurrency in the United States will have the emergence of a national stable coin, as already announced in this government. As soon as the Americans see that the state takes cryptocurrency seriously, they will begin to use it in large quantities.

I believe that now that china is trying to lead by example to the great countries that we have, the united states may soft peddle on their regulation as from next year like you rightly said and this will started boost the market too, as we can see how the statement of china president as regards cryptocurrency gave the Chinese people some level of assurance to be able to be a part of cryptocurrency without the government having to be a pain on their neck.

If the US government can do same too, there is every possibility that most of their citizens would want to take advantage of the opportunities that they feel they have been missing as a result of government strict policy on crypto which I know that the US government is now considering giving it full support also.

What do you think?

This chart in particular make sense, as there are really not a lot of women involved in technical fields related to information technology. A lot off women get upset by saying there isn't enough equal opportunities for them in the fields of science and technology but that is entirely unfounded and untrue, these fields really aren't pursued by most women (their own choice). I believe if they were to feminize Bitcoin a little and market it as some sort accessory to money and then push a celebrity like Kim Kardashian to endorse it, you better believe that women from all walks of life would hop all over it like fly's to shit.
Tried to tell my mother about blockchain and crytpocurrency, she said it would never replace real money (cash) and was a just a speculative fetish for tech boys (boy is she wrong). I promise you if crypto was introduced and marketed through the medium of Facebook's Libra coin, every women on Facebook and Instagram would own cryptocurrency, while it would spread like wildfire overnight.

The handwriting is clear on the wall for everybody to read, most of us can see what happens when an exchange announces that it won't be catering to US customers anymore, Binance being a very big example of this, they lost so much volume overnight and the BNB coin dropped in price almost overnight, the US is one of the countries with the highest level of gender equality so it's expected that when there are many people involved in Cryptocurrencies, a vast majority of them would be women, I think this survey just proved it that Crypto is heading in the right direction, worldwide adoption is the goal.

well i apologize if i judged you too soon but i am talking based on the evidence that i have. you believed a very poorly researched statistic from a site that has no idea what they are talking about when it comes to bitcoin. the resources they use are either not mentioned (a vague statement saying "a survey") or you see they are using other types of poor sources such as coin.dance (https://coin.dance/stats/gender) with false statistics.
to be honest i can not call what this site has done, a "research". it looks to me even worse than a random comment on a forum.

It's just a simple indication that the number of crypto users is growing continuously each year. Americans are known to be risk-takers and they are always open for adoptions so we can't question that. It's a good thing that there are lots of people who are into cryptocurrency. It's beneficial for both crypto and users especially when it comes to investment and mode of payment. I believe that more countries will accept and adopt cryptocurrency in the future.

Its a significant statistics that encourages us to be more confident with cryptocurrencies. Its a risk-taking act to be involved in crypto but as they say, more risk more income. We cannot say what will happen but definitely we will not know if we woudn't try. Americans are mostly stable citizens that they are not so afraid to invest into crypto. That's one factor that makes the statistics reliable.

It's really good to see so many female holders there are. I was under the impression there were very few females. Even on here I thought there were not many females. I think there are more than we think there are.
That graph has a much larger portion then I thought. Girls don't have such an ego as guys do so maybe we don't hear of it. Though I have always wondered who the people are behind these profiles in the forum.
Where they live and how they live, what pc they use and all that. It shows we really know very little about one another.

"While an increase of people with a cryptocurrency is positive for the industry,
the vast majority of Americans are not investing in digital currencies."

I am not surprised by this. Crypto is not yet mainstream and is something only some people consider. I think the way it is so volatile is one of the main reasons they do not invest.
Then you get people like me who believe that crypto is the future with their whole heart and show so by using crypto more than fiat.
Fiat disgusts me  :P

One should understand that at the same time the are good things going on with the US too , people are asking the government to make Bitcoins as important as the other personal goods , the ministers in fact are asking them to consider Bitcoins to be protected by the state !
Therefore I think they are just in a process but not exactly making it difficult for someone to own the Bitcoins.
I mean it will definitely grow.

Not only Americans but most of the people who don't have clear understanding of crypto will not invest into it as some just think it's like a gamble where you invest and either get profited or end up losing without realizing that crypto never dies. Those who are into crypto like you and me are more into it for it's features and trust that bitcoin will change our lives like it did to many other people during 2017.

I am very happy to see the results of a survey that says American citizens who have cryptocurrency increased by 81% in one year.
This is a sign that more people are starting to understand that cryptocurrency is the future, with rapid growth in America for sure
there will be an effect globally. I am sure that other countries will also grow rapidly in the ownership of cryptocurrency. And I am
sure American citizens invest more in bitcoin than altcoins. With this, the price of bitcoin can be higher because of its many demand
for bitcoin. I think the price of bitcoin in 2020 can reach $ 20,000 is not just a dream.

You should all think how many people who were asked to participate in the survey declined because they did not know what a cryptocurrency is. This would be my reaction if they asked me to participate in a survey. I'd say ok fine and they'd say it's about my opinion about chemo in treatment of children with melanoma. I'd be like  :o ??? no thank you I don't have an opinion really.

Since US regulations make it more difficult for citizens to participate in crypto investments the growth shows an underlying interest.
If regulations loosen up in the coming year this could spur growth for the global crypto market.

What do you think?

I think that it is unlikely that something will change in relation to the Americans. They are forbidden to participate in almost all ICO.Generally I do not understand why then buy crypto.

You're right, I think it's just a precaution to overcome the possibility of using bitcoin for bad things by certain people or parties. The limitation does not mean we have to stop, rather it becomes a trigger for enthusiasm to be more innovative in taking advantage of small opportunities.

I totally agree with what you affirm that by clearly defining the issue of regulations the growth of participation and investments will be high, however, the people of the government know it and feel the pressure because on the one hand they observe that cryptocurrencies are growing and on the other hand, they know that legislation favorable to cryptocurrencies will weaken the dollar, in fact many investors are looking for cryptocurrency projects.

We also have to consider those who decline because they want more privacy and they don’t want to expose themselves as a crypto hodler. Well, the numbers is easy to say but its hard to believe that they surveyed for 13 million women, maybe there’s an online consensus about this one but its good to know that more people shows interest about cryptocurrency.

It's simply unrealistic; according to a survey of 2,068 participants commissioned by Finder. That means roughly 36.5 million Americans own some form of crypto.
2068 participants don't represent 36.5 million Americans, how absurd, this study does not make sense.
If the study report how much Americans registered on some major exchanges in the U.S like coinbase, gemini, bitstamp etc, it would be more rational to conclude how much people involved and have invested in crypto.

Do some basic math.  If that were true, and knowing that USA holders are only a small percentage of total holders (no one knows for sure due to the global aspect of blockchain tech), that means that the "average"  world wide holder only holds a dismally small percentage of a BTC.  Those of us that have been around for many years then hold the average of thousands of collectors.  Everybody has to start on their BTC journey somewhere, but the majority of holders are not going to get all "excited" about holding 0.001 BTC.

At roughly 18,000,000 BTC mined at the current time, if each holder held 0.333 BTC there could only be 54,000,000 holders world wide.  Math doesn't lie.  Whales and old time holders would not even bend down and pick up 0.333 BTC (metaphor - like seeing a penny laying on the ground while walking by).  In reality .333 is over 3K so YES you would pick that up every time.  My point was a whale isn't going to spend much thought about only .333 BTC at all.

81% in a year is a pretty big change. We know that regulations limit some crypto transactions in the US. However, this cannot prevent US society from learning and understanding crypto. Because understanding cryptocurrency deeper will be more fun.

This is evident that American interest in Cryptocurrency is very high, we know that the American government does not allow concessions to its people to play Cryptocurrency, but the growth of Cryptocurrency users in America has actually increased.
I hope the American Government sees this, and can provide leeway to Cryptocurrency there. And I am optimistic that America will have a big impact on the development of Cryptocurrency globally.

Americans who own a cryptocurrency has almost doubled from 7.95% in 2018 to 14.4% in 2019, an increase of 81% in one year,
according to a new survey. That means roughly 36.5 million Americans own some form of crypto.

In addition, the survey by Finder said,
Quote
While an increase of people with a cryptocurrency is positive for the industry,
the vast majority of Americans are not investing in digital currencies.

Since US regulations make it more difficult for citizens to participate in crypto investments the growth shows an underlying interest.

I think the Americans is already adjusting in the bitcoin technology, we know that the bitcoin technology is already getting popular in the past years and a lot of country was already recognized it and make it as one of their assets. The country japan already started using it as a money and you could pay using bitcoin in a store in Japan. The Americans, in my opinion, is starting to use bitcoin as the bitcoin community was already starting to adjust in the technology for sure the bitcoin community will continue to get big. Male American in my opinions are more on a business-oriented person and as soon as money is a concern they will be interested in a good investment like bitcoin.

I think this is normal since, with a lot of technologies out there and the internet being mainstream, bitcoin will always be introduced to anyone increasing the awareness of them about these currencies. Though there are a lot of them there are still those big population that don't want any part of this and they even call crypto currencies scam.

The fact that the number of people who at least own a cryptocurrency in the United States has doubled, is a very positive signal for cryptocurrencies, 36 million people already represent a very strong market, because it is a population larger than that existing in In many countries, what is needed is to organize that market, to unify it if it can be said in some way and to ensure that these people can have a strong impact on the economy using cryptocurrencies in everyday life.

Exactly, something in this study doesn't seem to be right. Numbers are strange, exaggerated and don't fit although at first glance the results look nice. But somehow I don't think that the sample and method were correct and therefor this survey isn't reliable.

Both of you are correct. Bitcoiners are a specific group of people who value privacy. There's also a factor of the government and taxation each of us has to consider. Most people don't want to disclose their bitcoin holdings because some bitcoiners became targets of home invasions and threats. People see bitcoin holders as easy targets because they have all the money at home and it's harder to track and easier to carry than a bag of cash or jewelry. If I were asked about bitcoin in the street I wouldn't want to tell them too much because you never know who's going to watch these things. Maybe that junkie who lives one block from you and sees you walking to work every day. Now he'll know when you're not at home and that you're saving up in bitcoin.

No matter who, it is important that there are more people who own cryptocurrencies.
You're right because in other for cryptocurrencies (especially bitcoin) to the mainstream of payment more people have to own some portion of crypto and with the research I did almost 7 million Americans now own crypto all because of the benefit (upcoming halving) and ease of making payment through cryptocurrency.

I am not surprised at all about this news, I think it's not anything special to this platform, here this news is very much emphasis on the participation of the American people, you should know that the major population has not come from the USA, it's China and India, it's true that the USA citizen may have more money than Indian people, but I think American people can't only develop this platform alone, but I appreciate this rising popularity regarding Bitcoin and cryptocurrency around the first world country, this also impressive that The major portion of women are getting involved in this platform because they have much more time and money.

What kind of research did you do to claim that 7 million Americans own crypto and in that you are claiming that they are holding that in regard to the upcoming halving and that means all of them are holding bitcoin, if you could publish your studies everyone could see that and have a clarity rather than closed studies and fictions of imagination  :P. For bitcoin to become a mainstream payment there is a lot of development needed and if majority of the merchants starts accepting bitcoin then you will see major adoption as a mode of payment .

In that case, bitcoin well be able to be more famous all over the world. It's a big change in just one year. It really clear now that Bitcoin is not only for men but also for women as well. The government may no longer think of banning cryptos this time and yet we are already in the mainstream which is bitcoin having a massive adaption. I hope all countries are like this showing support to Bitcoin and it will boost the Bitcoin price soon.
