Post by: btctalkr on October 31, 2019, 06:17:08 AM
I couldn't find the details about how to earn merit as a newbie, and how to earn sMerit, I think this information is not here in this forum. I understand making useful posts will earn merit but what it means?

It doesn't look like you are a newbie. Did you buy this account?

Looking at post history, that account has created a lot of topics already.

Another user asked the same few days ago. Just read his/her thread if you are really interested about merit https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5196391.msg52896480#msg52896480

I have already checked all those links which is in the thread you referred

Most of the topics I have started are related to my services I offer under Services section

FYI, I am not a newbie and most specifically I never used to buy any accounts from a third party.

It means your merit points will increase. What else?

people compete to create something to get an award and be remembered by the local community, if you are lucky to get a commission, as well as the merit in bitcointalk, you make a post or help answer about the members' problems here then they are greatly helped by your answers and they give you a free merit for you, in my opinion if you are very strange if you ask what merit is for, in my opinion merit is an award where those who have worked hard to achieve something.

Quickest way to learn is to click on  the merit section of someone's profile and read what they merited or received merit for.

I merit stuff that makes me think, entertains or informs me.

Some think writing metres of florid nothingness will do the trick like the post above. No it won't. Make your point and leave.

The rank doesn't matter to earn merit. The only one thing you have to do, it keeps making helpful and useful posts on here. Because the merit will be given by random bitcointalk members. They need to see something special in your posts to give merit.

<…> I understand making useful posts will earn merit but what it means?
A useful post is not the only candidate type post: humour, wit, opinion, even art these days can receive merit, whilst not being posts related strictly to aiding someone, explaining technical features, creating guides and so forth.

The easiest way is to simply look around and see what type of posts have been merited, and create your own idea of what those posts brought to the table. Obviously, there are cases that differ from the norm, but getting a clear picture is not too difficult. Thought and time do accompany many of those merited posts, and that is often (not always) a common denominator. Placement has it´s saying too, but you need to figure that out for yourself.

An easy kick-start is to browse through the list of merit stats here: merit stats (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats). If you’re up for something more complex, you can take a look here (warning - number intensive):Merit Dashboard (https://public.tableau.com/profile/ddmrddmr#!/vizhome/BitcointalkMeritDashboard/GlobalSummary).

Well, I guess you havent searched enough I guess? A lot of  posts here can be related to earning merit, there are even guides that couls be found. There's something called a search bar at the upper right corner of the site, try entering the keyword "merit" or "how to earn merits" and some threads about it should show up. You could also pretty much look at how others gain merit and understand what made it seem like they did for them to earn that merit. It's rather easy to understand, but pretty difficult to perform.

I think OP that if you have read all these answers above then you know already that all members on this forum have different rules for granting merits.

This may be a good thread about BTC or some technical issues in wallets, a translation of another very good topic or a short answer that will help someone.
Sometimes even good humor is enough to earn merit or a gig posted in the right place at the right time  ;).

One is certain, members have to consider your posts as valuable to reward it with merits, so you have to publish interesting content that other users of this forum would like.

I think the most important thing is that you have to be yourself and do nothing by force. Post in threads where you feel good and know what you are writing about.
Just be yourself, kind, helpful, funny and this should be enough to get you a couple of merits, but remember, don't chase merit and don't try to do whatever you can to get them, because it will only have the opposite effect and will burn you out very fast.

I hope, I helped a little in understanding the merit thing  ;).

I think the most important thing is that you have to be yourself and do nothing by force. Post in threads where you feel good and know what you are writing about.

This is the best advice here.

You can instantly tell when someone doesn't give a shit about what they're writing, doesn't understand or has inserted themselves into a thread without digesting what it's actually about. You discard the first sentence as quickly as you read it and move on to the next post. It's immediately obvious here's no substance there at all.

And I'd be just as willing to merit a good question as a good answer. No one has to pretend to be some sort of authority on a subject to have an opinion on it and that's another faux pas that comes up all the time.

Joining merit giveaways is not 100% sure that you'll surely earn a merit or more merit if a forum user doesn't have any constructive posts. I believe that merit giveaways are formed because of a post that deserves a merit but didn't get one. The op did participate in giveaways but did not provide link of constructive or helpful post.

I mentioned that to OP by saying 'IF',or he will stuck with the no merit status forever.Yes merit giveaways doesn't give any assurance of getting merits because the posts needs to meet the criteria of merit giveway thread and its more difficult than getting merit from individual. :D

Why not read those stories, then learn from them?
Inspirational stories from self-made promoted users (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5100307.0)
To earn merits, people have to do same things no matter which rank they temporarily stay at (Newbie or whatsoever):
- Control their fingers and only type their posts if they have good ideas to discuss; avoid unnecessary posts I meant.
- Search for many available answers before posting and asking.
- Spend time to read, learn and increase their knowledge and experience in the forum and in crypto; just to be more knowledgeable that will do help increasing their post quality.
- Save good posts or threads for later reference, just save them as good sources for their own libraries.
- Being kindful and helpful in the forum (with good quality posts, of course).

You should know that I started in the forum as same as you, zero merit and from the newbie rank with merit system. You can do it!

I wrote some words in the past, too.
(1) Never begging for merits
Reasons:
- Doing this will highly result in Red Trust, it is just the matter of time. Sooner or later, if you keep begging for merits, you will get Red Trust, certainly.
- Doing this don't help you to improve yourself. In long-term journey in the forum, it's not good for you, generally.

(2) Spending most of your time to read and learn
Only start composing your posts when you have something extremely constructive to discussions, topics.
Reasons:
- You are noobs, newbies (lack of knowledge, and experience), so what you think are constructive most likely unconstructive in reality.
- When you actually have reasons to start composing your posts, after finishing it, please re-read again and again to check that your posts are good in grammar, vocabularies, and good enough to express most of your ideas. I wrote most of your ideas because sometimes it is difficult for non-native English speakers to write down and completely express ideas by words. It's a challenge for non-native English speakers, who don't have English as their mother tongue.

< ... >

(4) Never mind of bounties, campaigns when you are noobs
Reasons:
- Campaigns are there, open then close, then others open and close, from time to time. You should never worry that you miss this chance, that chance, this campaign, that campaign, something like this.
It is the same as merits. Lots of users complain that merits are rare, I can not get merits due to it is rare. Nope, merits (more exactly, sMerits - sendable merits) are available, everywhere in the forum. There are so many merit sources, normal users, who have lots of sMerits readily to send out. They kept them partially due to quality posts are rare, not sMerits.
- Instead of paying too much attention, and time on hunting for bounties, especially bounties that have easy rules and joinable for low rank users; you should start learning, reading, and build up your accounts.
When you hit your finish lines, it's time for you to seriously think of joining bounties.

(5) Learn from inspirational stories. Learn from merited users, topics, posts
Reading and learning from most merited users, and most merited topics, posts are one of the best way to improve your post quality, coherence and cohesion when you compose your posts, topics.
I have a topic on: Inspirational stories from self-made promoted users (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5100307.0)

(6) Spend your time to improve your English, especially Reading and Writing skills
Reasons:
- If you can not read posts or topic in English well, can not get ideas of posts' / topics' authors, it means that you have nothing to do in the forum.
Remember that you have to get their ideas well enough to not misunderstand their core ideas.
- Next, after reading good enough to catch authors' ideas, it is time for you to express your own ideas in case you have something to ask for help, something to discuss, or something meaningful to help others. This is the time you need to have good enough Writing skill.
This is why I mentioned you should improve your English skills, step by step, from Reading to Writing. Of course, you can improve both skills simultaneously.
The forum is the place almost solely for discussions via Reading and Writing.
You can find available sources for English learning in the References at the end of this OP.

(7) Don't pay your attention on post-length  (Ideas that I took from theymos' Writing a welcome message (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036308.0))
If you make ten thousand posts in a week, your activity will be capped and you will still be a Newbie. If you make ten thousand useless posts over any period of time, you will gain zero merit and you will still be a Newbie. You can rank up only by making good posts consistently. It's quality over quantity.

When trying to write quality posts, a lot of people act as though they're writing a book report for school: putting facts that we already know into their own words. Nobody wants to read that, and you will not get merit for it. Moreover, the length of your post and the quality of your English are only minor factors. In trying to write a quality post worthy of merit, you should offer new ideas, personal experiences, or perspectives that other forum users will actually find new and interesting.

Well much better really for not thinking it but what if he makes it as he's inspiration to grow up in this forum? Maybe I think it's better to think about it sometimes and check his post frequently so that he will notice  that he's post is helpful and unique. And I see so lot of people doing a good post which earned more merits but seriously speaking it's very hard to get those since sometimes people look on the reputation not on the post.

You meant to say that people who give merit look on the reputation and trust of the person and give less look at the post itself.
I do not think that's the case. Trust and merit are separate entities.

Obviously it's all about the post itself but if it's a total noob then I might be inclined to have a look at their other writings. If all of their other posts are nothing but yards of that Facebook/Twitter bounty shit then I may well be less inclined to make it rain.

One thing I definitely wouldn't do is randomly merit someone just because of who they are. There are plenty of longstanding members who don't write much of note.

No, don't take it literally. Maybe what he meant for reputable members are those who are popular and very influential in this forum like campaign managers, spambusters and theymos of course. Usually such kind of members are those on the Legendary ranks and those who can still rank up despite of the struggle due to merit system.

Your account looks very suspicious. But I still answer the question so that beginners can see my answer.

There is no specific detailed plan on how to earn Merit. I can only advise you on the easy way to understanding what posts they put for merit. To do this, open the meta branch, and see what they write high-ranking forum accounts.

If you liked one of them, go to his story of receiving merit and look at what posts he received them for. Pay attention to how he wrote these posts, how he designed them. This will help you quickly understand how and for what people get merit.

They always write something which is different  / special and deserve the merit. No one gives them merit for granted.

Couldn't agree more with this. Your passion about quality posting will bring you all the merits you want, you won't be needing to put efforts and run after merits if you have all the qualities that needs to be developed as a quality poster. Just study everything you don't know and try to put up spices to your content, then everything will follow. Try building raport with everyone, who knows? Camaraderie could be a key to earn merits and help your account rank up.

I don't suggest this for a newbie because people who is getting more merit already got recognized by fellow forum members so they even get merit for some kind of funny sayings but for a newbie it will just create a bad impression on them so they have to be helpful for others in the way they can which could be appreciated by other high ranked accounts who got more sMerits to spend.

I will suggest you to check all the replies here where many of our community members are trying to help you. Its the first thing which could bring merit for you. For getting merit there is no straight way but if you spend your time to help others like everyone is trying to help you by providing proper information's and guidelines then you will be able gain it very soon. Merit is one kind of award and you have to build yourself appropriate for getting this from others. At the very beginning stage of your forum journey its important for you to learn about this forum rather than running after merit.

You can follow below things;

# What is allowed here ?
# What is not allowed here ?
# How the forum works actually ?
# What you should follow before posting a new topic in any section ?
# What kind of post can be helpful for forum users ?
# How you can make your contribution for the forum ?
# How can you help other forum users ?

If you can build yourself properly for making quality posts and contributions then getting merit is just a matter of time.

I do not think that reputable members get merit only because they are reputable.
trust score is not a criteria when sending merits. But, usually, trusted members are good posters and never spam because they care about their reputation.

The shortest and most meaningful answer I can give you is follow the rules and eventually you will get merit. Don't post to earn merit and don't focus on it. Post like you would post on any other forum but be respectful to other posters and refrain from posting when you don't have much to say.

Those who try to get merit also get frustrated when they don't get it. You don't need merit to participate in discussions!

There might be few threads which are offering merits for the newbies/ Jr Members for the good posts.
You can write on this merit giveaway thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5195967.msg52973742#msg52973742) with the post you think should be merit.

True, users need to understand that ranking and merits are a small part of this forum which most users wants to achieve in order to earn though campaigns and bounties but we need to understand the fact that there are so many business opportunities and technologies offered in this forum which will help us earn in real life by adopting these technologies. I often see newbies making one word post to reach member rank by buying merits,  merits can be earned by posting something valuable and I wish people understand the importance of this forum. I am personally using an altcoin for my business payments by teaching it to my client which I figured out trough this forum because one cannot make a life out of just bounties.

Based on my experiences, it is very hard to earn merit amidst making a quality and useful post. The standard is just very high and I think there's a certain place where you can earn lots of merits and I haven't found it yet. You can actually buy it but I think it is not safe, there are moderators who often check if the post is really worth the merit. Try finding more giveaway threads and make sure your posts are well related on it so that you can earn the merit you are longing for.

You don't need merit to participate in discussions!
But we do need merits to rank up and become reputable members in the community.  :)

If this post is not a joke and describes your real understanding of merit, you won't become a reputable member of the community.
Do you really think a person's reputation here depends on merit? Please think about it. Did you come here to level up your account or share your thoughts and learn something?

You shouldn't look for ways to earn merit. It's not what the forum is about. Some posters in this thread are giving you good advice.

You are confusing trust which is gained from trading usually to reputation as an established member. That post might be a joke but is accurate because if you have a lot of merit then you gain reputation of being a good poster. That is separate to trust reputation which is like I said usually gained from trading or being a trustworthy member of the forum but it is clear that these are both related to reputation but not to trust. Having a high amount of posts and little merit might give you the reputation of being a poor quality poster.

With the new system I am demoted to newbie from Jr. Member.

How one can be demoted from Jr. Member to Newbie? If you had a merit, then it cannot be removed or deleted from anyone?

I  am interested to earn merit as well.

If you are interested to earn merits, then post quality contents that are useful for everyone.

<…> How one can be demoted from Newbie to Jr. Member? If you had a merit, then it cannot be removed or deleted from anyone? <…>
It’s the other way around (demoted from Jr. Member to Newbie). That can happen in one of three ways:

1. If the account was a Jr. Member on 17/09/2018, and had not earned any merits at the time, it was automatically deranked back to Newbie, as is the OP’s case (see  Enhanced newbie restrictions & requirements (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5030366.0)). That was a one time event.

2. If the accounts deletes posts (or has post deleted by mods), that drive the activity below 30. That will drive the account back to Newbie.

3. If the merit earned was through abusing the system, admin may rollback the earned merits (very infrequent, but it has happened a few times), thus could lead to de-ranking.

Thank you. I have corrected it.

I didn't know this. I only knew that if the post get deleted, then our activities will get reduced. And if the account is deleted, then he will not be a Newbie also, as he cannot use the account anymore.

Does that mean you check someone's merit stats when you see them post? Is that what reputation is for you? You think that earning some merit will make people treat you with respect or value your posts more? It's not like that.

There are people on this forum who earned a lot of merit for starting an interesting thread and there are people who made a lot of smart posts in the timespan of a month and did not get the same amount of merit. Who would you say is a better poster? A person who earned 50 merit for a single post or a person who earned 30 merit for 20 good posts in a row?

The point is: stop trying to earn merit by kissing ass and meriting other people in hope that you will get some back. Merit doesn't equal reputation and 90% of people here will not check your merit stats or value your posts because you are a legendary member. There's so many high ranked spammers on this forum that you should judge every post separately instead of thinking that he might be right because he has a lot of merit or green trust.

It is very simple means try to make these type of posts which is useful for others if someone is a beginner at least they can gain some knowledge from the post and the most important thing don't copy from some article and somewhere else because it is someone else's effort.

Most of those threads have rules and requirements, a newbie shouldn't focus on getting merits, if they are alligned in this direction, it will make them to commit and do the wrong behaviors just to make sure they earn some merits, these could involve them lying, begging merits or abusing the system in any way, what i will suggest is for someone to get to the stage of attaining a full member rank before he can think of seeking for merits help for ranking up.

Yes, that's correct. There are no merit giveaway topics for members without specific conditions or requirements, such as a specified number of topics and replies the member posted. The merits system helps improve the quality of posts in the forum. Those who adhere to the forum rules and try to contribute high-quality content to benefit the community will receive attention and appreciation from the merits source members without requesting it or making it their main concern of how to obtain it without effort or initiative from their part. Some newbie members may desire to receive these merits to create alternative accounts with different ranks to attempt cheating in campaigns or to deceive others. Therefore, the contributions of any forum member will determine whether they are eligible and deserving of these merits or not.

Simply post useful content, start healthy discussion or be part of it instead of spam posting in order to increase your post count as that doesn't matter. The important thing is gain knowledge and exchange it on forum you will automatically see merits incoming.

You will be rewarded with quality and informative posts on this Bitcoin forum. But I went to your profile and saw that I didn't find any posts to merit. You notice the posts of more senior brothers and the more you do the more knowledge you gain from this forum.

If you can post 1+1=2 merit.  You will have 1 Smerit, and you can give that smerit to others.

Well I don't think there's details on how to earn or make merit in this forum  except  you coming up with a nice post  and reply. I can tell for sure that earning or making merit is not actually easy I mean it takes time,  and being consistent,  observing and then strategize will really help you alot and trust me if you have all these it will be a bit easy for you.
I believe this will help.

In essence, getting a reward is a post that is useful for readers, apart from increasing knowledge and information. That way, when you make a post it will produce quality attention, consistency is mandatory, especially as a beginner. Because so many beginners are inconsistent, in the end they give up and disappear from the bitcointalk forum.

Getting merit can be said to be easy or difficult, depending on each individual's patience in carrying it out. But my advice is, don't be too hasty in pursuing merit because that will make you trapped in spam posts.

It's all about the mindset, I would say. Those, newbies, who would use this as a motivation will become better, as they improve themselves, learn everything, and start becoming more and more constructive with their posts. For people with such mindsets, there is nothing wrong with wanting Merits because they use their want or desire in their favour and it helps them reach their destination eventually since they work hard for it instead of whining and begging.

However, there is a second category as well, it's what you are talking about. This category consists of users who would never put in any effort but will still always be in the look for Merits. You will barely see them making any constructive and useful posts, you won't see their knowledge improving, but you will always see them in threads where people are giving away Merits.

There are alot of informations in here on how to earn merits.. it's never a big deal for potential members though. It's been made easy this days as we've got so many merit- sharing threads; all you gotta do is create a posting pattern that you're basically known for - and try to develop it with everything you learn on a daily...(cryptowise)

It's imperative to read and learn to adhere to the rules in here; you may work all you want to get merited, but when you bypass the rules, your stay becomes limited in here.

Op, if after been registered on the forum for years you don't know how merit is earned and how smerit is fotten then it means you aren't a good learner or you have been busy doing some hunting that won't help you to grow or add your knowledge of Bitcoin. The best way to get merit is by making quality post that conveys good information about cryptocurrency or crypto related things, you have different boards where you can share ideas, informations that will be beneficial to the forum members and you will be given merits then from the merits you are given you will have smerit which you can also reward to other members who you think their post is to be merited.

There are many posts and useful links above which can guide you on how to get merits for the posts. But if you are a good poster and want to keep it simple, do not think of the merits. They will come to you automatically if people like what you are posting.

Op's account was created way back 2017 which pretty good enough time to learn more about cryptocurrency and also I think the main reason why OP is still newbies cause he/she don't know where to start in order to earn merits and reach his/her merits and reach other goals. Cause if OP will active for so many years then he knew a lot of things about merit how it works and what are the purpose of merits way.

If you have read and explore the forum well, you will notice those posters who have earned higher number of merits, because of their useful and high quality posts that other members find it very helpful most especially to the beginners in the forum. Reading the information about getting merits is not enough, you need to find concrete examples in the forum so you can easily determine what makes a post becomes more meaningful and high quality post.

However, as a newbie that should not be your first concern. Increase your knowledge first about bitcoin and on the forum. If you are knowledgeable enough, it will be easier for you to create meaningful posts that easily attract merits from other members.

There is a wide difference between being here in the forum for long and being an active user. It is when you are an active user that you can learn new things from the forum and whatsoever you learn will turn around to help you in the crypto space and even to write articles for merit.
