Title: Is Dogecoin real or a meme?
Post by: DioBrandoCoin on November 04, 2019, 04:28:43 AM
I recently heard of Dogecoin from a couple of friends of mine. Is it a meme or an actual cryptocurrency, because so I would like to get some myself. Also, what trading platforms trade Dogecoin?

Also, if possible can you mention any useful information about Dogecoin that I can use when trading it or buy it. Thanks.

Dogecoin is a real coin, but it started as a meme-coin.
It has infinite supply, so imho it's not a great investment. But this doesn't mean the price cannot rise for various reasons, so please decide for yourself if you invest or not.
I guess that the starting point to learn about it would be: https://dogecoin.com/
The relevant exchanges that trade Dogecoin are listed at CMC: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/dogecoin/#markets
Please do your own research, some (most) exchanges require KYC info. Most trade at Binance because this exchange doesn't ask for KYC under certain withdraw daily limits.

it is still a meme-coin that is created for joke and is mostly used for joke. but that doesn't mean a joke can not have value! just like the way people are trading virtual game items like Dota2 hero items with real cash, a meme coin like Doge can also have value.
NeuroticFish already posted good links, i just want to add that if you are thinking about "trading" or "investing" in a coin like this you also have to be able to analyze its market. a coin like this that has unlimited supply is not a good choice for investment ever.

dogecoin is a real crypto and includes popular coins, almost all crypto players know this coin, although initially this coin was created to mock bitcoin, This coin has a very low price, I do not know whether in the future this coin will have a good price, but when viewed from the past this coin is difficult to get high prices.

It's not a meme it's a real coin but it does not have features of other crypto coins as it's mainly used to be shred as meme but it did had it's golden days during bull run and if you ask my opinion about Dogecoin I would say this is not an ideal coin for investment purpose even though their might be occasional rise but it will not be used the way we use other crypto coins.

You should move this to altcoin discussion, dogecoin doesn't equal bitcoin discussions.

And to answer your question yes, it was created in the early market, and when "doge" was a pretty funny and new meme, it has no value and it's pretty amazing it's still worth a decent sum of money nowadays.

Their entire economy is based on nothing and it's very easy to manipulate, especially if you are a whale.

It started as a joke coin but then it eventually gained the support of the crypto community and grew big from then on. Right now, with a market cap of $317,846,675 USD, it is no small joke anymore. And indeed it "doesn't mean a joke can not have value!" Even the top 10 coins in the coinmarketcap list have a couple more joke coins that are valued in billions of USD.

Technically it is a cryptocurrency, but just by looking at its name and branding on the internet you will see it is more like a meme coin. It doesn't have an actual use case. Can you make money from trading it? If you know your craft - for sure. But I consider it a shitcoin most of the altcoins in the market today.

I mean.. why would you hold DOGE instead of BTC?! That is beyond my knowledge and understanding. This is why I believe very few altcoins will still be trading on major exchanges in the near future.

Doge coin is real a coin and part of the cryptocurrency family, one of the oldest coins too but due to its supply doge price is still peny worth making it not so popular in the market, doesnt even have good partnerships for dogecoin to be used. We can say that dogecoin is one of the pioneers of cryptocurrency but as time goes by more better altcoin making dogecoin look like a mem now.

Yes, and it is one of the popular coins before. Considered as one of the best choices for investment. Its price is still cheap even now, and not considered to be a good altcoin investment anymore.
Dogecoin never shows any improvement since early 2018 and there's a lot of altcoins now which is way better than dogecoin.

Dogecoin is currently a real crypto and is traded on many exchanges and has a large trading volume and it was a meme coin before. Dogecoin is convenient to trade during the day and should not be long-term investment for this coin, but experience to capture and understand it should learn more about it.

No one actually expected for dogecoin to last until today.
It actually makes me wonder what makes dogecoin to keep being alive until now. slow improvements, developments, etc. Dogecoin is one of the oldest coins, and we have never seen any price changes. There are still a lot of holders of dogecoin, I think they are still waiting if the bull run will influence its price.

It's convenient and easy to use.

The lack of development is actually a plus - it means exchanges (and users) don't have to constantly upgrade their wallets. It's a case of "install it once and you are good to go".

Super low fees for moving doge, quick confirmations. There is no problem with the mining as it is merge mined with litecoin. It's listed on most exchanges, so if you are moving money from one end of the world to the other, it's easy.

Doge is also not volatile - the price hovers between $0.0023 and $0.0027 and has maintained this for years. That makes it good to use as a hedge against bitcoin volatility.

i haven't really been following Dogecoin but if this is true and it is no longer being developed then it means that the project is dead and abandoned by everyone.

otherwise when you see new versions of the wallet released and you have to upgrade it means the developers are still improving the project. in other words regular upgrades is a good sign.
for example think of any other project, windows, Ubuntu, browsers like Firefox,... they are all constantly releasing new updates because their projects are being actively developed.

Dogecoin is a real coin and probably you had a doubt on this coin because I believe that the CEO left the coin. Doge is the meme and that's where the coin gets the idea of the whole dogecoin thing.

However, if you didn't know, doge is very popular to many traders as it only wants a little fee for transactions.

I don't know if that's the best way to describe its supply.  It isn't infinite, but it will *grow* infinitely.  You wouldn't be able to buy more doge than what the market cap at any given time allows, but I understand what you meant.

And yes, dogecoin is a real cryptocurrency even tho it isn't the best one to invest in.  I think (but don't know personally) that a lot of bitcoin ATM's also sell doge.  That ought to be a good indicator of how popular it is.  And op, having some doge isn't a bad thing.  It really is a pretty popular crypto and isn't a joke coin, and it has also held its value very well over the course of its lifetime.  If it were a typical shit coin that nobody used, its value would be closer to 1 satoshi.

I still do not understand how meme coin become one of the most popular and the most used coin in the crypto history, maybe it is because of its true decentralization. By the way who is the real "CEO"? Elon Musk?  :D
Dogecoin is very popular among altcoin traders, they rather trade DOGE/ALT pairs than BTC/ALT pairs.

hundreds of faucet sites that pay with dogecoin, you can get it if you are diligent. Dogecoin is a coin as a joke, no wonder the total supply is crazy, but this coin is much in demand. Dogecoin mostly started as a collection of donations. you can read or learn on the official website [1] or on wikipedia it is very easy to understand [2].

if you want to trade Dogecoin, I suggest choosing the largest exchange volume and a fast market move. look for accurate information and do an analysis first before you dive. This coin is very different from the others, even in an exchange of millions of coins waiting to buy / sell.

It's a very old coin (2013!). So the first altcoin exchanges had it. The later ones have it because it was (is) used by many for faster transactions or for exchanging coins with very low price.
Its development has ended long ago. It  doesn't have a "CEO"; one personality tied to Dogecoin was Jackson Palmer, but he may have also left the boat many years ago.
Dogecoin had a great community and still has a pretty good one. And it used to be a cheap and good training ground to understand Bitcoin, because they are pretty similar in behavior (at least until SegWit).

It's a real meme coin. During the times of early coins, dogecoin was made to let people learn about mining and using cryptocurrency but the coin itself got a good value and fan following with the ease of use and it's low transaction fees and fast transactions. It was one of the most tipping coins and a good gambling coin.

Still unimaginable since it was just a real meme coin that's been created for this purpose. but like, who might taught that it will gained this kind of attention coming from more active traders, being use to transfer balance to another exchange as it has low fees and yet faster transactions.

This coin still exist and whether it's a meme but more solid than those old coins who are completely  being forgotten by now.

Dogecoin is one of the oldest assets in the space having out lived years, it generally has the highest marketcap liquidity in the space of all the existing assets. it's meme has already affected the coin in a good way. many blockchain projects try very hard to be taken seriously, to be perceived as a serious financial instrument. but to the rest of the world, every single crypto coin is either internet monopoly, or a get-rich-quick scheme. Doge is still very weird, and very detached from the normal world. Dogecoin community (that I'm a part of that too) is probably the only completely nontoxic crypto community. it is very important to me that Doge in the cryptocurrency space keep a sense of humor about what we are doing here.

Not a meme. The initial Doge Coin was launched in December 2013 and the history of the beginning or that made the doge coin popular in the past was The Dogecoin community has often raised funds for charity purposes. Based on the data I got in January 2014, he launched a fundraiser to raise $ 50,000 for the Jamaican Bobsled Team. Also often use Doge as a tip because the price is cheap and the transaction is quite fast. I myself use Doge as a preference for transactions with small nominal and low fees  :D

Dogecoin is a decentralized, peer-to-peer digital currency that allows you to send money online. Think of it as "internet currency." (here is a quote from the source: https://dogecoin.com/)

You can read it on the official dogecoin website, because the explanation there is very complete and easy for you to understand: https://dogecoin.com/

Dogecoin was originally created as a meme coin, but when they saw it was useful, they started taking it seriously. I do not understand why you can not get any results. At least look at the daily trade volume: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/dogecoin/ . $63 million (in CMC). Do you think meme coin can be such valuable? I think no.

Dogecoin is a coin with an infinite supply, so people seem to dislike it. But I have been observing Doge for many years and can conclude that in one year Doge will have two big price increases, if everyone catches this surely they will make a decent profit from it.

It's meme coin when it was started but the developer has made it become a real coin and then after the dev retire from doge's project to another project and then it has become another meme coin again but since there was a news about the crosschain platform between doge and another chain has made doge become alive again for the two times.
Mining just a part to secure the blockchain and it should not be included as the advantage that has already given by doge.

doge is real, but from the start nobody really took this coin seriously. they call it a joke coin, and on average they use doge for tips. however, almost all exchanges today support doge. and the DOGE trading volume is large enough for a meme coin. this can't even be compared to altcoin shit. and I like doge, because it's cheap and the price is quite stable.

Constantly tinkering with something that works can break it.

A currency is different to something like a web browser or an operating system. Those things are services. A currency is a means of exchange and a store of value.

If you constantly "improve" a coin - arbitarily changing say the amount in issue, the inflation rate and so on, you destroy trust in it because no-one knows what the rules are. Why would you invest in something where the rules governing it may change in the future?

Bitcoin doesn't change much either - and that's a good thing. Imagine if you had activist developers who changed the amount of coins issued per block constantly because they thought it was "development" or "improvement"!!!!!

Part of what destroyed the dollar is people arbitarily deciding to do QE and print loads of it. Thus devaluing the dollars of people who already held them.

Well, Dogecoin actually originated as a meme based on the Shiba Inu meme. However, since its launch a few years ago it has become increasingly serious and less of a joke.

Dozens of websites now accept this so-called meme coin as payment, so it's definitely no joke anymore.

Dogecoin is a real cryptocurrency derived the name from a meme doge. It is already a stablished coin and standing as a top coin in the coinmarketcap. This coin was known for its cheap price and withdrawal fees. It also became popular when the price pumps and used it as one of the coin to be traded in the market with a high volume. This turns dogecoin a currency from a simple meme

Even though it came from a meme, it is a real cryptocurrency that you can buy and hold from different exchanges. It is also a good cryptocurrency to use as a payment since its value don't fluctuates that much unlike bitcoin and other big cryptocurrencies. Dogecoin is such an OG coin and I am a fan of it and I am still holding some Dogecoin just because I was mesmerized by the old days.

I recently heard of Dogecoin from a couple of friends of mine. Is it a meme or an actual cryptocurrency, because so I would like to get some myself. Also, what trading platforms trade Dogecoin?

Lol, it was not a meme coin, it was one of the earliest crypto as far as a know.

Also, if possible can you mention any useful information about Dogecoin that I can use when trading it or buy it. Thanks.

Since everyone already tell you useful information about Doge, I will just give you the link below to show what this supposedly meme coin is:

Even if it started with a meme, there are still investors who are trading dogecoin. It's part of cryptocurrency so it is not far to the other altcoins out there. It was first created as a fun but even though names or the origin wasn't that serious, this coin is still giving me profits. Yes, I do have some in my wallets and I trade them.  Others are laughing at this coin but this is still surviving in the market until now.

Actually Dogecoin started like a joke currency but as years pass by it gains some community supports and they continue to develop it. It is useful on arbitration transferring funds accross different exchanges, it is fast and have very low fees on transactions. Recently it is listed on the most trusted exchange binance you trade it there now.

dogecoin is a meme, is a coin, and is your best friend too. You can find all info - price, charts, exchanges to trade - about any coin on these sites:

Dogecoin is one of the first generation blockchain same as bitcoin and litecoin. But this project seems to be a joke at first, even its creator has doubt of it. But recently this project has been added to some major exchange and to some point people got curious why is this happening in spite of being a meme coin for a long time. Infinite supply is good if there's a usage of one coin but hate to break it but dogecoin isn't appealing to my taste.

Dogecoin is the original cryptocurrency that is made possible because it originates from the meme and jokingly. Community and enthusiasm in Dogecoin are very much annually. And in some games platforms or faucets mostly use dogecoin payments. I think he can be a good stable and can sometimes go up high but return to the initial price. If for trading hard to get profit from them because the ups and downs are very few and slow.

Its a joke from the very beginning that turns out to be a serious business now. Doge is more promising than any other shitcoins IMO, due to its large supply investors can take advantage of its low inflation rate and cheaper fees preferrably one of the most used coin in making withdrawal from exchnages.

Lol. The first time i came across it back then, i thought of the same thing. I think it was meant to be a parody coin though due to it being cheap and quick when it comes to transaction speed, a lot of people actually made use out of it. And i agree that it's more relevant than a lot of coins in the market that offers imaginary products. And you also have gambling sites actually accepting doge.

It is a real coin designed as a meme coin for the crypto universe. The community for DOGE coin is pretty strong and we see dogecoin pumps twice every year lol.

Pretty much the reason why a lot of people are using this coin for transfer purposes. I for one, is a long time user of doge but yes, only for transfer purposes, not really holding this coin. I first came across of doge 5 years ago and the faucets were very generous at that time.
This has evolved to one of the most used altcoins ever existed and has been in countless exchanges. Even Binance caught its attention. Remember, the dev team is no so active anymore, yet, they don't need a formal application to hit in BNB. That's how doge becomes one of the influential coins in crypto. The OP can however, check all the reference links posted by others here, even hitting the Google search will give you countless articles to read.

I wanted to Laugh out loud but then I saw your rank and saw that this is actually your first post, I think you should move this thread to the Beginners & Help Thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0

To answer your question, Dogecoin is trading in major Cryptocurrency exchanges including Binance and is listed in Coinmarketcap so it's very much a real coin, realer than majority of shitcoins out there and it has been around for quite a while now.

Both are true. But since dogecoin can be traded, I think this has become more real because of people's interest in selling and buying it. Some people use it as a perfect betting tool. Some use it for cheap transactions and donations. At least dogecoin still functions even if it's only a payment system.
On the other hand, almost all markets from the smallest to the biggest include dogecoin in trading digital assets. In other words, dogecoin already has its own community that already loves it.

It starts with memes and turns out to produce large daily transactions and has a large market cap value. Doge is one of my favorite coins to trade because it is fast and cheap. At present, Doge is traded in almost all major exchangers and this is a sign that Doge coins are not memes anymore

Dogecoin was created for meme purposes, so it has an infinite supply! But we gave it value, so, Dogecoin is now has a large number of trading volumes and its rank also very high in CMC! You can buy it for fun purpose, therefore you can use it as an investment too because investing in DOGE is better than investing in many alts shit! But I would not recommend you to do that where you have Bitcoin, Ethereum, Chainlink, and many more good altcoins to invest in!

Dogecoin is just a meme-coin, a coin that has no specific purpose, just a digital currency. I think this is not a good coin for investment.

Initially, it was taken as a joke, but now, it is one of the best-trusted cryptocurrencies. The fact that Godecoin is taken in many respected casinos (together with Bitcoin and Ethereum, the leaders of the crypto market), proves a lot.  DOGE can reach 0.01 again as it happened during the greatest bull run in 2017.

This is one of the issue for dogecoin because the supply is too high it became meme or a big joke in the crypto world but compare to other altcoin it has a fastest transaction and cheap fee.
The good things that dogecoin have a real product that why it listed to some popular exchange site like binance and many more.

The second information is correct, on the other hand why is the doge called a meme because the supply of the doge is so high, and why the doge becomes a real coin because it is known as a doge that is traded and has a stable price volume. Many of the game developers, gambling that makes doge as a means of payment. In my opinion, the Doge is a legend coin, one that is blindfolded because the price is relatively cheap, but if you look from history many people become rich with doge.

It's a meme coin but doge has ever had a vision in the past. after the developer has gone and there was no party who interested to did further development progress for doge coin.
This coin is a good coin for short - mid-term investment. I can't say if that will be a really investment place but at least that must be a good place to get the volatility to trade.
It's still a good coin to be bought.

but for the moment there are already quite a lot of investors investing doge because their trust is independent of their supply. so I think it's good for investment for people who have low funds, and as far as I know the doge is used a lot for dice

doge is a meme. the development team was never serious about developing this coin. the reason why doge still survives is because it is one of those old coins. if seen, there is no real use for doges other than for tips. but even though there are so many who believe that doge can develop, I don't know why they believe this. but I'm not one of them.

There are thousands of tokens that has been released in the time past and many of these projects are all listed on coinmarketcap which is very much impossible for you to even know 50 percent of them, so the only way that you can get to know some of these projects is through recommendation from either friends or forum, but be very wise and careful because we have lots of people that do shill coins a lot because of their own investment in the project and not because they are announcing it for its quality.

I have known doge coin for a very long time now and I think that they initially came out well, but just like every other projects, they have gone the other way which I think other cryptos have gone too, so I would not know until the bear market is over to still know their functionality.

Doge coin is a real coin and it is one of the oldest coin in the industry. Just like Bitcoin and Litecoin, Dogecoin can also be classified as store of value and medium of exchange. Even though, a lot of new things has happened in the industry but Dogecoin is still retain itself as one of the most popular and oldest coins.

I use to mine it very early on. I am not sure exactly how long it was out for when I was mining but I was mining a few 1000 doges a night with my desktop pc just using the CPU. I wish I had just carried on.
I remember I spent the doge on a gambling game that was like hot potatoe and you wait for someone to buy the bag from you otherwise you lose the bag and get nothing. So the last person with the bag when the time is out lost. I thought it was cute and didn't really expect to be using it to make purchases or for it to be a trading pair since doge is matched up often alongside eth, ltc, btc.

Considering it can be used to spend as one of the main altcoins it does not need to have a product or project. Its done what it came to do. Be an alternative payment method to bitcoin. It was one of the first altcoins so hence the name and the meme.

Dogecoin isn’t a meme coin, I agree that this a real coin and this surviving many years a long historical coin i would say that because it’s very popular coin in cryptocurrency space. Such strong liquidity it’s dominating a few years before. No way to treat a shit coin or something. This coin attracted to connect all of the investors in their largest platform.

Dogecoin is a real coin and it has been around for years now. In fact, I'm not even sure how this question came about because even if you look at the market cap you can see that the coin is currently ranked 33 and recently just like the some of the other coins has gone up in value (see attached).

I hope this makes sense to you and brings more clarity to your question.

You are very funny. Dogecoin is more real than all these shit we are chasing after. The transaction fee is very low and the confirmation time is very fast. Although its price hardly will grow, people prefer to move fund with it between exchanges. It's currently ranked 33 in coinmarketcap.

dogecoin is a popular cryptocurrency such as eth or litecoin, dogecoin can be buy at large exchanges such as binance, bittrex, poloniex etc. but dogecoin is not good to buy for short and medium term trading because dogecoin prices cheap make price movement dogecoin slow, dogecoin good to investment long term

You can check on coinmarketcap mate, this is real coin.Even Dogecoin ranking is 33 now.but There is no total supply for Dogecoin.Maybe this is the cause people think that Dogecoin is a meme coins. But if you make research you will find that Dogecoin is real coin, trx fees very low and it will take less time to make trx confirmation. So many traders love to make payment or make withdrawal because of low fees and fast trx time.

I won't really discard or disregard doge coin, it is very popular, but does not really attract many people.
I have mined doge coin once before, with coinpot, and then it got very dip in price after the bear markets of 2017, which ofcourse ruined and sent many tokens to exile, but doge coin prevailed.

There is something that keeps doge coin alive, and it is even capable of doing 10x with almost alot of people un aware.

Dyor, and get your speculations right because doge can be a good low key altcoin
