Title: Do long term holding profitable in all cases?
Post by: Bagaji on November 07, 2019, 12:14:42 PM
Should I continue holding my ethereum? Am a believer of long time holding but am currently beginning to lose faith due to fact that I have been experiencing constant decline in my major coins that I have been holding since late 2017. The coin in question is ethereum which I have been holding since when its value was around $1,300 and now its value is now less than $200 per one.
Should I continue holding my ethereum?

No one has the right answer for you. Everyone expects the value of the cryptocurrency market to increase and everyone to make a profit. However, anything can happen in this market, maybe tomorrow's price of ETH will double or drop to $ 100. If you decide to keep your coin, believe it. If you don't believe in a coin, sell it now.

You said you've been holding your eth since it was 1,300 or so, within that time and now there have been times when it surpassed that amount and if you had sold then, would have given you profits, no matter how small. The goal of investment is indeed profit as you know, but selling it right now, you're surely incurring nothing but losses.

If you're a believer in long term investment, as you said, then you should continue holding your eth, at least till it reaches the price you had initially bought it for, and if so kindly surpass it, just do not sell when you'll be on the losing end, it's bad business(investment), except of course you can't do without the ROI right now.

Long term holding will be benefitable or more profitable only if you have the patience to hold it long enough likely from bearish trend to the next bullish season which may happen in months or years even it takes couple,so you just have to hold for little longer because the next bullish season is expected to begin in late 2020 or in early 2021,so you still got the time to enjoy the drama.

Yes and No. Profit-making has a lot of factors involved in it and it isn't just a matter of holding it for a long time that makes it valuable. You may have to hold it for a long time but if it's a trash coin, then you wouldn't profit still by the end right? But no one really knows if one is a trash coin or not in the first place, until it booms or until it drops. It entirely depends on the foresight of one and the ability to respond to cases where it may suddenly drop, so you let go to limit your losses.

As for ETH, well it is a good altcoin, but in the end, its development is still limited because of a huge enemy, the Bitcoin. It steadily grows, but ever so slowly because all attention right now is in BTC. if BTC somehow gets f*cked up, like one way or another, a probability is that ETH would take its place, and a boom could happen then. Well, it's just a scenario though and I doubt it could happen but you never know.

Long story short, Yes it could, as long as your foresight is pretty good, profit should come, and No, if it's bad or the market just rekt your life.

I disagree with a lot of people. No, not all cryptocurrencies are or will  be profitable in the long term holding plan.
The Darwin theory. There are a lot of craps out there and most of them will die in the time and they will be forgotten forever.

I would say that you have no choice to keep your ETH if you don't want to lose money. If you sell right now it's a 600% negative ROI. Can you afford that?

Despite you seem to be less excited with altcoins, if you're a real believer about the project itself you should be convinced that it will hit a high price in the future. And if you are trying to convince yourself it's because you're not a real believer after all.

Perhaps focusing on fewer altcoins will give you a better experience.

Ugh, I hate this kind of question.
Whatever our answers are, it doesn't make anything right. You've been holding it since 2017. if you sell now, you'll lose quite a lot of your investment.
If you continue your long term holding, we don't even know what the future holds. What if you continuing your holding, then you might lose more than you are now?
And there's also possibilities that the price will sky rocket than ever. I wish you luck. It's all your call.

Well it depends on you if you still continue to hold but if you have some important things that you need maybe it is the time for you to use it, But I heard these news about etherium that have releasing a new update 2.0 I think. And said that have a huge price of etherium will to make and surpass the price of etherium in a past year 2017. Maybe it will happen so that your etherium you hold for a long time to increase price, So for now think about first before you make some decision.

of course you have to hodl longer in the long terms but when you see a price that will benefit you better you sell ,don't be too eager to take a lot of profit when prices fall like now there is no chance to sell again experience must be kept in mind long as you invest

Depends on how long you would able to take or sustain yourself into this very unpredictable market. This is actually the
hardest part of a long term holder where you would able to witness the price pumps and declines which you cant really
avoid not to have that regretting part when you do saw ATH prices and you missed on selling that time yet you believe that
it might even shoot up its price even more.Your choice though if you do still had the courage to hold or just simply sell off on
this cheap prices which is actually a not worthy thing to be done.

For the first question "Do long term holding profitable in all cases?" the answer is clearly no, long term holding is not always profitable.
You have to pick the right portfolio and watch it, since some coins will probably die and/or become worthless.

Should I continue holding my ethereum?

This is very hard to answer.
Ethereum had a great idea. That idea made it so popular it's still one of the few altcoins accepted by a significant number of merchants.
Now Ethereum has competition, but as seen with Bitcoin too, competition is usually way behind.
But 2019 was not a great year for Ethereum. It was a bad year for all altcoins. And there were problems and delays with the updates, and there were strange proposals made by Vitalik, ... and of course a lot of FUD around all this.

Whether Ethereum has the power for a beautiful comeback or not, I don't know. And even if I'd know, it's you who has to get all the pieces together and make a decision.

Actually, it depends on the coin that you have especially if you hold good coins just like bitcoin and ethereum. Maybe try to hold your ethereum because I know there is a new update about it which is ethereum 2.0 and because of this it might trigger the price to increase again. I also have ethereum and my plan to this coin is to sell when the market goes up so I can regain some of my losses. Lastly, keep on holding mate and just sell it in the perfect time so you will not regret.

Yes, you should. As far as I know ethereum have some potential to grow in the future just like bitcoin. Though we shouldn't invest only in a single token since these coins are susceptible to volatility and there are times that your investment might not be profitable in a certain period of time.

I think profitability is based on the mentality and skill of trader and not about the time frame. Warren Buffet became the richest person by long term investment. While George Soros made all his fortune by short term trading. Now what you are doing is nothing but just hodling. Buying  and holding until it's finally profit. People buying and selling coins merely like these will mostly end up in losses. I think if this coins is holding you from learning more and buying more using that capital sell it because along with the capital which you have already lost now you are even losing opportunities to make profits.

If you don't need that money, you better hold it until next year because ethereum will held big revolution to it's technology which people said ethereum 2.0
You already experienced a big loss, so it's not worth to sell right now except you found a really good potential coin that you trust will rise in a short time, but my recommendation is just hold your ethereum until next year, i'm sure the price will be at least 300, you will still have a loss but at least you minimize your loss

That's a tough spot you are in.

Are you losing faith because of the time it's taking for the price to reach $1,300 or because of the delays in development?
If it's the former, then just patiently wait. I don't think it would go lower than its ATL.
If it's the latter, then you might want to consider selling. Holding on to a project you no longer believe in will only stress you out.

Consider also storing those eth safely in a hardware wallet and forget that you ever bought some.

Many thanks for your kind advise for I so much believe that your advice is not difficult from what I can do since that investment is not the only capital that I have to leave on. For now I have to put that behind me and just assumed it is a lost and one of those things that do happen to one investment and maybe one day I will smile.

If you believe we are too early in crypto you would really have to think that the price will one day shoot up just like the bullrun days and you may even profit more if you just hold and stake your ETH instead. ETH is one top token for the smartcontract, there is no one yet had tried to oust ETH even when WAVES already have but its nothing compare to ETH.

However if you think you are losing opportunity right now as there are more to invest than keeping ETH on your wallet, no one can stop you from doing it.

You should cut loss already when ETH drop 50% from 1300$ price. If I were in your case. I will just hold it since nothing to lose already, ETH price is already at the bottom and slim chance to plummet more. You just need to wait and stock more cheap ETH but don't expect that the price will be there again. Maybe around 500$ is possible but above 1000$ is a miracle already.

It is pretty tought to say right way early, we ain't no authotiry nor has any reputation for you to believe. Besides crypto currency are unpredictable. What's for real is that ethereum is still on the top list of alts which still possible to pump as if it is a bitcoin among altcoins. Well you could still believe it yourself like many others did.

I know it's a hard decision since it's been a long and a huge lose. If you really need money or you already see a better opportunity to use your eth then go ahead, we all don't know what lies ahead in ETH , it will depend on the developer and the market. I'm also holding some of it and prefer to just keep it there for it's already too late to cut loss, I will just use it if I'm really in need and I hope will not happen till ETH increase in price again.

if you hold ethereum since 2017, obviously you will look disappointed with the current prices, and even you will falter with all your choices. I know that because I am also one of the people who has held ethereum since then. in this case, I suggest to hold back until halving, and the development of ethereum 2.0. I think it's worth the wait if you've been waiting since 2017. Another suggestion, if the price of ethereum is at $ 500, or above, it's your chance to sell it into bitcoin, or fiat. I think that the price is good enough to cover the losses that you got in 2017. However, for now, the ethereum condition is not the same as 2017, so I think it is quite difficult for ethereum to return past its ATH in 2017.

Idk what to say about another coins but still I share the same thoughts on bitcoin, ethereum and on some other ones. Can't 100% surely say that on ethereum but for me on bitcoin it's like a gold rule: Bitcoin will always surpass it's all time high. Was it once 20K? It will be 21 next time, not maybe in 1-2 months but maybe in some years. So to my mind long term holding is profitable, for bitcoin's situation, halving gives me that high hopes cause price went from 600$ to 20k after halving, slowly but it went and was amazing.
Personally I would hold ethereum too or at least sell that when price will rise a little bit to not get serious loss from it.

Well I would advise you to hodl at least till 2020 to see market the outlook remember there is going be launching of ethereum 2.0 come January with a lot of improvement from the current eth switching fro PoW to Pos I believed this launching is going to be a major fundamental that would likely pump it price more so the much talked about halving of bitcoin next year is another event that could possibly triggers and pump the price of btc whose movement also correlates with eth.

This might still give you a reason to continue, as this is why I keep my ETH too since 2017 since I was not able to sell it that time since I thought it will not fall these much, everytime I'm trying to cut loss I just can't give it up knowing someday like my bitcoin it can still have it's time again for it can be useful as a platform that do many transactions.

basically if you looking for a financial advice on your invesment i think it is not a wise action.

giving people random thoughts regarding an altcoins that you have it is just like gambling if you take it seriously and here you go for me ethereum have still a lot of space to grow , hold it la little bit longer always advisable.
the bitcoin pressure on altcoins is not over yet , people and i personally still waiting the moment where ethereum can get back up from the long low price compared to bitcoin that several times back moved up.

ethereum should be the first choice of your long term crypto investment after bitcoin for various reasons include how ethereum 2.0 will be releasesed later in this Q4.

You should equally be aware that the high transaction fee of Bitcoin in the year 2017 was one of the factor that led to high demand for ethereum and consequently creat an increase in the market value of ethereum because its transaction fee was very small as compared to that of Bitcoin. Will that kind of scenario ever happen again in the future particularly now that there are no more ICO project as compared to what we had in the past.

I think so, because you've lose huge percentage of value in ETH already. Cutting off your possible loss is too late since it's already in its dip state IMO. Better to make yourself more optimistic and don't mind it too much otherwise it'll trigger making yourself worried again regarding to the ETH's capability in getting back to its ATH.

I'm not so sure if Ethereum is to be kept on long term. It's good coin but I don't expect some high price rise that would be significant on a long term so you will probably keep more or less the same value but don't expect some bigger profit.
On the other hand I beleive that Bitcoin is most profitable on long term and that is worth keeping, more than any other coin, you just need to have enough patience.

If you still strongly believe Ethereum's going to rise in the future for whatever reasons you've determined like their technology and other features, then sure, keep holding, but I would agree with what's been said here that long-term holding's still not 100% safe, though for the majority of people it's a better way to go than trading for sure. One pretty easy way to see this is just looking at the historical snapshots that Coinmarketcap provides (click for direct link (https://coinmarketcap.com/historical/)); a lot of the top altcoins and Bitcoin have been rising for quite some time, though a few of the past top alts like Peercoin have basically vanished because they didn't have much of a use case and didn't have much development.

It's up to you in the end, but always remember that it's sometimes best to just cut your losses and start anew. Bitcoin's been historically one of the best if not the best coin to hold long-term, but that might change in the future. Nobody knows. Do what you think's best, as long as you can afford to be wrong.

If you have a better option in this case, you can sell it. Otherwise, keep holding ETH. Maybe my view have been different in the past, but now my opinion is in the positive direction. If your goal is to keep for a long time already, why do not you keep holding? Or you can divide: keep some of it as it is and invest the other part to other projects.

You bought on the peak price? then you must keep holding to avoid losing big money and I know ETH will go up again. I also hold ETH because its the top altcoin, and if the market recover like bitcoin goes up high again, this ETH will follow that footstep and maybe make a new ATH again. You can buy more right now to down your average cost, and keep holding mate it will be worth it.

Long term holding is a good strategy, but doesn't work to all kind of investment and it doesn't work all the time. What happened to you is the same thing that happened to those who bought Bitcoin when it was still at $19,500, they hold on to it thinking that it will go back to $19,500 or even higher. There are those who sold BTC at lower price and Buy other coins for profits. The price of BTC has changed a lot of times already with a difference of more than 12% in just a matter of days. If you take advantage of that, you should have recovered you loses in ETH already by now.

My advice is to continue holding ethereum, we must not give up and must remain confident that the ethereum price will one day
back to the price of $ 1,300. Instead of surrendering now, there are even losers, especially as we know in 2020 will be launched
ETH 2.0. This will be the point where ethereum prices will rise, then plus 2020 there will also be halving bitcoin which is very
maybe the price of bitcoin will go up. If the price of bitcoin goes up, usually the price of altcoins follows up. That means there is
a possibility of ethereum that you hold can profit.

Ethereum has gone sub 100 dollars already in the past 2 years, and it's been up from that. I think you shouldn't lose faith since you've already kept it for that long already. Since it seems you're prepared to go long term, then for me, sticking to what you think will work for you would be the best choice. The market is moving slowly for majority of this year and for me that's something to be positive about.

I suggest you should hold it, ETH is a legit, yes it struggles but legit coins are bound to succeed.
Maybe you get frustrated due to its price now, but since it has proven to rise crazy, it could happen again, I feel you mate, we are in the same situation or I am even in a worse situation since I also hold ETH tokens which are deeply affected by the struggle of ETH.

That be your choice. But if I were you, I will still hold my ethereum because I was getting a big loss if I sell right now. If I want to sell my ethereum, I will sell it when the price was $1,200, so my loss is not too big as now. You have been held for a long time, and it's not a problem if you hold for more until the price can increase again. But if you want to make a profit, then you need to wait for the price to rise back to more than $1,300, then you can take your profit.

Haha yes that's is the reality we need to admit in crypto space because is part of the volatile risk investing in crypto either long term or short hold, the key to get profits in crypto is monitoring and focus and make right decision for long term hold the key is patience.

The Ethereum price has fallen by more than the Bitcoin price during the last bear market, so have bigger potential for price increases.
I also think that when the new bull run begins, people looking at the price of $10,000 (BTC) and $ 00 (ETH) will be able to believe more that the price of Ethereum will increase easiest from $200 to $2000, than that the price of Bitcoin will increase from $10,000 up to $100,000. Of course, the market will verify this, but it seems to me that the ETH price will increase faster and stronger than the BTC price.

If you are really use free money, money that you wouldn't use to daily life, like what people should do in investment, i think there are no more choice except hold it and hope. It is right most of long term holding is profitable, but it all depends on what price that we bought. Trading and investment is not only buy sell and hold. But analysis is needed so people not buy in high price like this.

Long term holding is not profitable in all cases. How long one should hold for profitability depends on individual sensitivity to the project token, some project are best profiting when sold immediately it is delivered. Even though, most long term hold is targeted towards the bull run, there are some token that are very low now but until bull runs before it can rise for good profit.

Eth still follows the btc pattern and the technical chart has a history that always follows 2-3 months after the latest bitcoin price. if btc goes up then eth will adjust the price. There is nothing you can do if your assets are floating too low, but you can start buying again and trade more frequently on the Usdt pair. Eth's monthly charts have started to increase slowly.

I think you should hold ethereum for more because we almost see the bull market. Don't lose hope and faith because the market will be back to the higher price, and that will happen too with ethereum. I guess that many of us still hold ethereum too like you, and although it's hard, we need to do that if we want to make a profit again. But perhaps, you can use some of your ethereum to trade so you have a chance to get more ethereum while you can also make a profit in bitcoin. I think that could be done, but you need to have skills to trade which I believe that you have good skills in trading.

OP,first of all you need to forget the peak value of a coin you are holding, just remember what is the price of that coin when you bought it,if its still $1300 then you need to hold it longer or you bought it before that peak price which may near your current price then you are not really in any serious loss but you were just regretting about your missed profits.Yes in all cases it is not going to be profitable but if you have time frame of more than 3 years then chances are high.

In my opinion long-term hold needs to have a specific purpose because if you only know how to hold to make a profit, it will take a lot of time to wait. In fact, this investment has been mentioned a lot during the past few years but in order to make a lot of money from this investment, you need to have a lot of experience in investing. Not any coin can bring you high profits because only 10% of long-term investors actually make big money this year.

Some good coins like Bitcoin usually don't bring too much profit to you and if you take risks then you should choose new coins that have appeared in this market to make higher profits. The risk may be very high but if successful, you will be very rich from that coin.

Holding long term is not bad due to the perception of the user believing that soon in the future it will increase. As the user still holding and just extend the patience no matter what happen in which depend the value of the crypto currency in the future. Holding long term is very effective by those user who can manage their patience and understanding in which this kind of situation is already happen way back 2009 to 2017.

Having a patience and at the same time having a knowledge on the coins you are holding.

You can just blindly hold, you also need to monitor what's going on to the project you are believe so you can always make a sound decision making.
Holding is not as easy as it seemed especially that the market is very unpredictable and there is no assurance that the crypto market will prosper, so also prepare of the possibility of failure because its better to be ready in all possibilities.

Yes. There is no problem with Ethereum and the entire market. The problem as I see it is that you bought Ethereum when it was very expensive, specifically during those times when Ethereum was near its all time high. That was a wrong time for me. And now, you are forced to continue to have patient and HODL them until that price will be reached again, which will not be soon I am afraid. If you have trading skills, why don't you try gaining a little from your current amount of ETH? That is an option for the meantime.

I mean long term should be three or more years,on that period there will be a bullish and bearish cycle on the prices for sure so in 2020 or early 2021 we are expected to hit the next level prices on cryptos on that ethereum surely will take a place. There is no definite time frame on how long should we have to hold but more we hold the better chance we have.

Not in all case for sure, most altcoins will not recover to its ATH, but some major alts like ETH has a higher probability to reach $1300 again when bitcoin back into action.
For many people who have bought bitcoin or ETH at the ATH, no other choices than keep holding until the right time to sell.
As mentioned in many TAs, bitcoin more likely to reach new ATH after halving, assume it will happen in 2021 then be patient wait for it.

Long term hold do is not as profitable as it used to be, reason because since the last bear market of last year many investors have desist from holding tokens.  They just wait for a few percentage increase above the price they bought the token and then dump at any slight increase,  thereby leaving investors who decides to hold for long term to suffer huge loss. But if any investor must hold any token for long term then the investor should hold token of a project with real and actual usecase that can stand the test of time

I know most traders do experienced losing a lot of money because of having wrong decisions. Those actions wasn't able to generate good outcome, and yet I myself also suffered more than what they've struggled. Since, we missed selling those previous coins we had, I think it's only a win or loss strategy like risking towards long term hold without huge expectations to gain a desired profit.

Im a long term holding believer and just like you I have some coins that I bought at high price but what can I do now? The prices are declining and there's no other choice but to hold hoping fot the price will somehow return to its previous high price or even close. You have bought your coins during the hype last 2017 so it's hard to answer your question. The market is unpredictable and our profit through long time holding will depend on the time when we bought the coin. That's why we are advised to buy while the prices are low and sell it when the market situation gets better. Just don't lose hope we don't know how Ethereum could soar in the future.

It is not profitable in all cases. If you hold some shit altcoin, then there is a very high chance you will be making some serious "loss" on the long run. Invest only on coins that are well known and has a very active community and support. Only those coins will very highly likely give you some good profit on the long run. Bitcoin is one such good example. Look at the charts. You will see that in the long run, everyone who has been holding has made some profit (skip 2017).
Keep holding your ETH. You haven't made any loss yet as long as you are holding it and not selling it.

You have obviously mistaken the duration of a long term. You have bought ether at the highest price and now the price is very low.
You ll definitely have to wait until it rises. I am holding ether myself and will probably hold it until it crosses $1500.
Besides that a long term generally means 3-5 years at least. So consider waiting more to earn more.

Everything has happened and in my opinion there are actually some who experience it like you and there are those who still hold it and some sell it when prices are still high even though there are still losses.
and inevitably you have to hold it because the price difference is so far that you have to hold it and there is no other choice even though it takes a very long time until the price exceeds or the same price when you first have it.

Holding shitcoin or another unpopular token is a NO. They lost more value over time, especially when major cryptocurrency declines. Better to have a cut loss setup in your trading, so that when it is triggered it will automatically sell just to minimize more losses.

For me, no long-tern holding bitcoin and another cryptocurrency can't totally guarantee you that it will be profitable because no one can say that cryptocurrencies price will increase after 2-3 years or in the future. Most people are just saying that if you bought bitcoin at its highest rate, which is almost 20k, just hold it even no one can say that bitcoin's price will increase at that year/ moment. Just hold it and believe that bitcoin can rise again because there are only a few ppl that predicted that bitcoin would reach at 20k. They can only predict if the value will increase or decrease depending on there TA; also, take note that is not 100% accurate. But what are the reason why you invested at bitcoin and other cryptos ? just hold on the reason and don't overthink too much, especially if you can afford to lose the money that you invested. :)

Not in all cases if your long term is not actually long term. People forget that most people will not hold their coins for 50 years, for example when people who bought from 300-500 levels saw that $20k price they sold, were they smart to do that? Sure, the price went down afterwards and hasn't recovered back ever since yet that doesn't mean it is long term, it is still short term, it is a profit but it is a short term profit.

Long term is when you hold something 10+ years, it is not impossible, I have been holding my bank of america shares for over 10 years now, bought them in 2009 and it is been a bit over 10 years. So, if you are willing to hold your coins for 10+ years then sure you can make a profit, there will be down times and there will be up times but in the end after the 10th year I am sure it will always be profitable.

Same here but I still have faith in this project. Just wait since they are still active and will have an upgrade this December.

Holding shitcoin or another unpopular token is a NO. They lost more value over time, especially when major cryptocurrency declines. Better to have a cut loss setup in your trading, so that when it is triggered it will automatically sell just to minimize more losses.

We have no choice if our holdings become a shitcoin mate, that cannot be foretold when the cryptocurrency market falls down at crucial stages. Holding our funds should be done even though the value slumps, and yet that the last resorts that are needed to do. Always find adequate alternatives like diverting with other coins, just to avoid waiting for your shit-coins to recover one day. But for those who were planning with new investment, much better if we avoid those coins with no trading volumes to be included in their lists.

To be honest after bitcoin the only coin that I trust the most is only ETH and it is good coin that never remains down forever it has the ability to overcome faster than other altcoins so I’m not going to sell my ETH at all if the price falls instead of adopting cut loss I will prefer holding as getting such an amazing coin at $500 is great opportunity.

It's simple and my understanding of holding is simple. Bitcoin is not just a coin but also a brand and this brand is recognized all around the world. I'm sure that one day it will be worth much more than today.

ETH is an important coin that most of the time follows Bitcoin. That includes today when Bitcoin lost 5% ETH followed and also dumped at the same time.
This makes me believe that ETH will pump along Bitcoin. Hold it if you want but remember that BTC is better and more recognized. It's just safer to hold BTC.
