Title: WTB [Closed] Moai Phenom Resin 3D Printer
Post by: SaltySpitoon on November 10, 2019, 06:34:03 PM
Hey guys, this is probably a long shot but why not ask. I'm looking to buy a Formlabs Form 2 or 3, Moai Phenom, or similar "prosumer" resin printer. I've got an eye on a few other models as well, so if you have another comparable printer for sale, feel free to shoot me a pm or ask if I'd be interested. If you've used these printers and just feel like chatting about their performance or your experience with them, feel free as well since I'm sort of undecided and would appreciate input from those that've used them.

Shipping would be to the US, I imagine international shipping would be prohibitively expensive, but if not I've got no issue with international trades.

The Prusa SL1 is one that I had somewhat considered, but the small print volume is kind of a deal breaker for me. I appreciate the sources you provided, but I didn't find any of the higher end printers I was looking for. Thanks though.

Is there any specific reason why you are preferring SLA over FDM? If it is just about print volume, I'd suggest you to take a look at Creality. Although they are hailing from 3D Printer heaven of China, they do have a solid reputation and I believe there are several FDM printers they have has a considerable print volume. Definitely take a look at them if you are a beginner on 3D Printing.

When it comes to SLA Form 3 is undoubtedly the champ. However, the price is a bit above "prosumer" standards from my perspective.

My question stands, what are you planning to use the printer for?

Dental/Jewelry and very small parts and treats. FDM doesn't get nearly the print resolution I need, and I've had OK results burning PLA out of molds, but I'm after better than OK. I'm on the fence regarding the Form 3. The print quality and ease of use is a bonus, but man is the castable resin expensive. If someone has one for sale that'd probably make my decision for me, but I'm looking for the best printer I can get under the 0.5 BTC mark.

Are you looking for something like this? https://www.newegg.com/p/288-001F-00077

Almost! The print volume is too small, but now I'm checking what newegg carries for resin printers, thanks  :)

I don't think you'll be able to find any good resin printers on Newegg. Most of the e-commerce sites that are not focused on 3D Printers usually sell very low volume and/or cheap, starter printers. For example the highest volume I could find was this (https://www.newegg.com/black-xyzprinting-1-0a-sla-3d-printer/p/288-001F-00028?Description=resin%20printer&cm_re=resin_printer-_-9SIAF1P76Z6669-_-Product) model on the whole site.

If you are willing to spend 4000+ USD (which is equivalent to 0.5 BTC anyway) I'd suggest just ordering a Form 3 directly. Though it's on backorder. It's expensive, it wastes quite a bit resin but... you'll get the best quality in almost all of your prints.

Yeah, I didn't find anything interesting there, but it was a good suggestion. I've got a little bit of time to figure it out while I wait for the backorders to clear out for the Moai Phenom or Form 3, but I'm thinking I'll give the Phenom a shot. The Form 3 is the standard in ease of use, but all of the expensive upkeep and proprietary features are a turn off. Print speed is also a consideration there, so I think giving the Phenom a shot is worth the risk.

That said! If someone has a Phenom or Form 3 (or other similar model) for sale for BTC let me know, availability very well could be my deciding factor, as none of the stores that sell them accept BTC directly.

I've used one of the those before and they have surprisingly good print resolution, but its a bit lacking when it comes to convenience features and real sharp precision. I think I can definitively narrow it down to one of these two models now.

I'm still looking for a Moai Phenom, but I did get ahold of a form 2 which should work for now. I'm closing the thread, but will reopen it when I'm ready to actively search for a Phenom again. If you've got one for sale, feel free to shoot me a PM.
