Title: Pet Supply store anyone?
Post by: Wegg on March 31, 2011, 02:43:44 AM
Been toying with the idea of starting an online only pet supply store and am wondering what the interest level would be among bitcoin users?  I would obviously try and keep prices competitive and support bitcoin as a method of payment. . . but other than that basic idea, I am still deciding if it is something that will work or not.

The interest level amongst bitcoin users would probably be that of/similar to any other user. We have pets too :)

If you do open something like this, feel free to advertise on my forum www.thepetboard.com
I am thinking about accepting bitcoin donations there and promoting pet businesses that accept and use bitcoins!

I plan to buy my cat food with bitcoins. There is a shop in my country that sells it.

It really does seem like any idea of selling a service or product online has to be viable with normal currencies to even
have a chance of working with BTC. So first things first, get that part in order. You can only count on the novelty
factor and goodwill for so long.

Second, when selling a product online that is clearly available locally without paying shipping is a huge negative
for possible success. Take cat supplies for example. I can get cans of food to feed my cat at 50 cents a pop during
a normal sale when I stock up. It is relatively heavy and bulky. Kitty litter is even worse when talking about shipping.
Why would I want to pay more to buy it from you? So scratch that idea out. It is doomed to fail and has been attempted
before by companies with very deep pockets or VC funding. pets.com anyone?

Now what might work is a pet store selling cat supplies I cannot find locally. These would be super unique toys, the
fanciest of treats, proven to work health products, etc... Basically a cat lover's wet dream of a website for pampered
pussies. But something like that takes a lot of work organizational wise versus what I am seeing today from websites
selling generic products I can get at a local corner store. Buying condoms or a USB thumb drive with BTC? Really? That
is the best they could dream up?

If you plan to attempt something like this I would gather up a handful of people to bounce ideas off of in private to determine
if you are wasting your time or not. After all, blab a good idea in this forum and you will basically have a competitor the next day.

I want a Silk Road for rare and exotic animals.

I want super rare piranha and some of those little lizard fish that look like Pokemon.

I disagree for the most part, fcmatt. I'll outline why in my next post on this thread after I get this humorous one out of my head.

Will your store carry Purina Alpaca Chow?

On a second read, I don't disagree as much as I thought but will still quote your post to state my case.

Your pet supply store will work in conjunction with Bitcoin.

And so would each and every other product and service, provided:

(Using the pet supply store as an example) ...you're not listing and selling the same dog collar as every other site, thinking that you're going to get sales because now you, and only you, accept Bitcoin on your site. But, if your site were to sell only limited edition or private label pet supply items, with accepting Bitcoin as one of your payment options, then you may have a weiner.

Another idea if you are willing/able to put up a brick and mortar store, that coffee shop in new york (can't recall the name but if you have been in the BTC community for long enough you have probably heard of them), had a great business model (IMHO) relating to BTC.  It sounds like they would let their customers pay or receive BTC as change, but additionally it sounds like they would let customers buy/sell BTC at the store.

So for any brick and mortar store that seems like a great low risk way to get involved in the new currency because you would  just be augmenting your already working business with added BTC business (and no card swipe fees with BTC).  And as that side of things expands you are minimizing your exposure to currency exchanges etc.

GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HEAD! I had/have the same idea about B&M businesses acting as private exchanges, thereby getting more foot traffic into their physical stores. Small businesses that normally may not get much foot traffic, yet viable enough that their able to keep their doors open.

Flower Shops
Bait Shops
Small Antique Stores
VHS Rental Stores
LP Resale Stores
Used Book Stores
Used Shoe Stores
Your Local Corner Bar that has Karaoke

Feel free to add to the list.

New and Used Car Lots
Amish Bakery
Private Peep Show Venues
Small Hotels, Motels, Inns, and B&B's

I run a couple of aquariums.  So if you included aquarium supplies and food into the site I would definitely be interested.

You're certainly welcome to create a store and add as many Pet Store products as possible to my site http://bidbitcoins.com - You're also welcome to create auctions for as many products as you like. No living animals though, please.
