Title: What I did Today for the Bitcoin Community - Billion Dollar Donation
Post by: bbit on November 16, 2011, 04:52:59 PM
Ok, ok so it wasn't a billion dollar donation BUT I did introduce bitcoin to this guy with weusecoins.com ...

http://billiondollar.me/

I guess he's been getting a lot of attention because of the huge amount he wants to raise online for Occupy Wall St. and other causes.

Here is his response to me in an e-mail:

"This is very interesting! I like the idea.
I am going to be taking a larger look into the idea as we got some good PR
yesterday. I will actually be donating 50% of any proceeds to the 99% and
OWS related causes.

How does bitcoin work with transfering money into dollars?"

What are you going to do today for the bitcoin community?

On a side note: maybe we should have a "task-a-day" that at least one of us should complete in the name of bitcoin a day   ;D

And a scant 20% goes to himself. This should ring well with the bitcoin early adopters.

Got to start somewhere  it would introduce plenty of people to bitcoin regardless if he takes a cut.

not forgetting the interest he can make by holding on until it never reaches close to a billion $

Yes, his greed promotes your greed so it's all good.

I mean, seriously, he gets to become one of the 1% while "supporting" the 99%? Words cannot convey my derision.

My thoughts exactly.

How is that I'm greedy by introducing more people to bitcoin ?

I'm pretty jaded about anyone who thinks that bitcoin is worth using. You might actually have altruistic intentions, but it's unlikely since the whole system is based around making money, not changing the world.

Why are you here if you don't think bitcoin is even worth using ?  No, I don't have any altruistic intentions why you make assumptions like this ?

also noticed your great constructive critisim over on this thread you are a true charmer aren't you ? : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=52001.0

The "whole system" is not "based around making money." That doesn't make any sense. The system IS money.  If it's "based around" anything, it would be cryptography and peer-to-peer networking.

Because I'm interested to see how deep the rabbit hole goes.

It is quite literally the 10th shameless, useless thread Xenland has made in bitcoin discussion advertising his site when there is a forum for it.

Ridiculous.

So he would be happy to take 200 million if people donated the full 1 billion?

I'm not saying for people to donate  they can do whatever they want BUT if they do why not introduce to bitcoins if they do.  Could care less what he is doing / taking  thats for people to decide.

Does that site just scream SCAM to anyone else?

And already his math is wrong on the proceeds breakdown... he forgot the 2-3% taken by Paypal   ;)

They seem to by preying in people who are bad at math. Since when is "$356.47 dollars donated." "Almost 1% funded" of a $1 billion goal? 1% of 1 billion is 10 million.

And what is Occupy Wall-street going to do with $300 Million in funding? Buy a building on wall street and occupy that?
