Title: Phishing check for hyperlinks (both URLs and Text links)
Post by: Bightening on November 13, 2019, 09:49:24 PM
For a forum where over 90% users store money by themselves,  security is all that matters. It’s a fact that most posts here use hyperlinks. It helps to provide other users a reference. But hyperlinks, both text links and URLs could be used to hide phishing links

I’ll like to suggest that a software that checks hyperlinks be integrated in the new software and an add-on be created while we still use Bitcointalk.

When you hover over hyperlink on Bitcointalk (and other places), you’ll get to see the main URL linked to the hyperlink. Although I heard this can be manipulated, it gives me an idea. While hovering over the hyperlink, the software pop ups up a little bar beside the displayed url and changes to a green or red color which depends on if it’s been associated with a phishing scam, previously reported, a look alike or a verified website. Same goes for the add-on. I’m not a bad ass developer, but a simple, open source program would be great.

I know about some link scanners like URLVoid, kaspersky virusdesk, PhishTank among others. But since this is about a Bitcointalk community approach to phishing attacks targeted at cryptocurrency users, I’ll prefer a specific solution.

If you have noticed, bitcointalk's features and layout are simplified for a reason. Quicker loading time and less usage of data bandwidth when members try to access it. I believe adding the suggested feature would affect how the forum loads and bandwidth which will be something uncomfortable for a member who send slots of hours in the forum.

The good thing about this forum is most members are always on the look out for any sort of scams and phishing attempts so if someone posts phishing links in a major board or busy board, they will most likely be easily seen within a short period of time and reported or deleted.

There are browser extensions that do this (e.g Cryptonite). Putting this responsibility on the server is going to make it slower and more expensive.

AFAIK: This forum has a list of banned sites with disabling the ability to click once it is published.
Golden rule: Avoid clicking on any link unless you verify who posted it and report any phishing link is the ideal solution to this problem.
Some adds enable you to do this, but since these links are constantly renewed (prevention is better than cure.)
