Title: Has anyone ever purchased anything through BitcoinTalk
Post by: OGEOS on November 14, 2019, 08:16:49 AM
Hey everyone,

Just a random question out of curiosity - Has anyone ever purchased something through BitcoinTalk and successfully received the goods?

I know there is a marketplace section but seems like there are scam accounts all over there. Newbie accounts with one post etc.

Interested to hear the responses!

If you mean the digital goods & currency exchange section then 70% of sellers there is a scam especially those newbie accounts that selling goods at a very cheap price. I purchased many items in the marketplace section of the forum specifically on the collectible section. The rest of the marketplace is a gray area that's why you need to check the trust history of the seller always before you buy anything here.

I have already purchased a number of stuff here. So far, there is not a single transaction that ended up disappointing. But to make sure everything goes smooth, do not easily trust members who have very low ranks as well as those who have valid negative trading trusts. As much as possible, especially when dealing with low rank members, use a reputable escrow. That is always the best way to do trading here.

Because they never do background check before purchasing the product here. It's the buyer fault too in my opinion. Bitcoin has no refund feature so you must deal with extreme caution
to anyone that offering goods here. I saw some account here that have few positive feedback that turns into scam so how much more for user that doesn't have any feedback or some
random accounts that newly created.

Hello OGEOS,

Yes ! I have purchased and sold loads of items through Bitcointalk (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=140827).

You pointed it out : if it screams "SCAM", then it probably is one.
Except if they just start, why do some "sellers" have newbie accounts with one post ?
Probably because they will get marked as scammer at some point.

Review the user's trust feedbacks and trust your guts and your judgement.
(Make sure to check the "Untrusted feedbacks" on people trust page but keep in mind any user can leave untrusted feedbacks, they are not always relevant and prone to abuse)

Then when you wish to engage in a transaction with another user, you should use escrow.
(You send the money for the goods to a trusted 3rd party, the seller sends you the goods and once you got them, the escrow releases the money to seller)

There are lists of trusted escrows on this forum : https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2439910.0 ; https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5047302.0

Be careful and use caution.
If you get scammed on Bitcointalk, then it's very likely that your money is lost so ... watch out.

Since there are no sellers from my country as far as I'm aware, a no for physical products.

And for digital, none since traffic's scarce on the Digital marketplace.

Like anywhere else, in any market, there are many scammers but there are many honest sellers. Just DYOR.
The problem here, when paying with bitcoin and you get scammed, is that it is almost impossible to get your money back or to know the real identity of the scammer.

Just follow yogg's instructions and you will be fine.

I've made a few small purchases of Bitcoin through the forum, and they have all been fast and problem free. I've also tried to sell crypto domain names, but had no success. My Bitcoin purchases were from Legendaries that I have come to know and trust through interaction in the forum

I have purchased a decent amount of digital goods and also vouched for a bunch. With new sellers I always try to help them understand that them going first is almost a given since trust in this community means a lot when it comes to buying/selling. Also, using escrow is always welcome.

Just use an escrow if you don't feel comfortable dealing with someone or even better use an escrow every time no matter who the other person is. The small fee that you will pay to the escrow agent is worth the sense of security you will have.
If the other party isn't willing to use an escrow ask him to go first. If he refuses that as well forget about it and move on to something else.

I sold some NES games a few years ago to a member on the forum, and the deal went smoothly.

Shortly after I registered I started a thread in the Goods section trying to sell some of the same games (I think), but I got no hits.  I was just getting into bitcoin at the time and I'm not even sure if I'd ever owned any at that point.  I quickly realized that members here would much rather hold onto their bitcoin than spend it on some used video games--and I think that's still true, even though I don't often visit the sales sections here anymore.  It's hard to sell things here unless they're bitcoin-related.

And yeah, there are tons of scammers in the digital goods section.  Probably it's much easier to scam with non-physical goods than it is with physical ones.  But there's a lot of sales going on in the Collectibles section, and I don't often see scams happening there.

Just use an escrow if you don't feel comfortable dealing with someone or even better use an escrow every time no matter who the other person is.
Yeah, when I sold those games the other member would have been right to insist on an escrow, but he trusted me enough to send bitcoin to me first--I guess because at that point I'd been on the forum for a while and had interacted with him a few times.  Escrow is definitely a good idea, but it's a pain in the ass when you're dealing with physical goods.  It's the same reason why those things aren't used as collateral for loans.

I already did buy a watch and it was from a well-trusted forum user from Croatia if I remember and so far even without escrow the transaction was successful and the seller always keep in contact if I ask him about the courier tracking. You can see my profile trust for more information of who I am talking to here.

But always keep in mind that even if the account he used is a green trusted it doesn't mean that he is so if you have doubts about the user it is really for best to use a trusted escrow.

Personally I have purchased a lot of things on this forum and everything went ok everytime. There are a lot of amazing people on this forum, for example Minerjones and condoras are my favourite ones because they helped me a lot of times and I bought items via them.
There is no trust from you or another person? Then use escrow service, see this topic for example: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5047302.0
In overall there are a lot of things purchased through bitcointalk, especially physical coins.

I bought banknotes and collectibles coins from a numismatist here. He sent all to me by mail and I received it a week later, as he is not from the same country. I was very happy because it's not that easy to find someone selling them here. One coin is rare ;D Other than that, besides a GC I bought recently, I mainly trade currencies with other dudes.

Like IRL, use your head to choose to who you deal with

I've sold a few pairs of sneakers/trainers to people on here. However, I did scam them all. Obviously don't deal with one-post newbies or if you have to use a trusted escrow.

If you look through my trust ratings (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=trust;u=18321) you can see many satisfied users that have purchased goods on this site dating back many years (probably one of the better examples of this forum's successful trading history, just ignore the negative ratings from scammy idiots like TMAN).  Some of the larger purchases have been in the six figure dollar range for a single transaction.  As long as you are dealing with reputable members and using established escrow agents, you will likely avoid issues.

I have done some currency exchanges, given loan to users and so far all gone smooth. There are good people around among few bad. You just need to have good experience with the community and it comes from years or months of active presence in here.

I see its not just OgNasty is doing business here in the forum by selling products.
Physical coins were bought from the users who made them and inquiries and transactions are being done in the forum. There is no other way for the buyer to receive it than sending it to them probably thru UPS. There were lots of the treads in goods section, you should be checking the threads to see for yourself.

Users will likely become more and more willing to meet in person to make trades as the value of physical bitcoins increases.

I recall one purchase I've made in the past... a physical coin. You wanna buy it?

It's a NastyFans 5oz silver physical bitcoin with 5 minted seats which collect a little bitcoin dust every year. You could have everything its collected over the past 4 years PLUS any dust in the future! It would be just like you're joining the club in 2015 -- instant old timer! PLUS it also makes a great looking paper weight.

OgNasty just said physical bitcoins will rise in value though, so it's even tougher to let this go now, but I'm willing to sell it for the price I bought it for... ~1.6BTC. Since your new, I'll even cut you a huge deal -- 1BTC w/free shipping!  :o  :-[

It's a steal of a deal!!  PM if interested!!  ::)

I'd say "/sarcasm" here.. but IF you wanna buy it -- I'm serious!! :D

....Keep your BTC or buy BTC!

Yes. I bought two Casascius coins from Camolist back in the day. They arrived just fine and nice and quick. I didn't do escrowing.

I can't see myself ever bothering with conventional goods, especially cardable ones. Even if they arrive you never know the source of the funds and whether your card is marked because of it.

I think that I haven't bought anything through Bitcointalk. I'm just not that kind of person who are looking to buy something on online forum.
I'm not much interested in collectibles, so I haven't bought any physical coins. Also, I haven't tried to mine coins, so I haven't bought mining hardware. Digital good like accounts, subscriptions and etc also isn't very interesting for me.
But I thing that if you're using common sense, it's safe enough to buy here. You just must use escrow, don't buy from random newbies and also avoid things which can be illegal or obtained in shady ways, like Netflix or Bet365 accounts.

If he is an old timer btc was 5 bucks a coin  when  I started here.

I have old  btc addresses that have had 325 coins come in and go out.

Most of them were when coins were very cheap.

Doing business on bitcointalk  has worked for me.

But I had a 10 year old established ebay business when I came here.  I used that  to help me here and used bitcointalk to help me with ebay.

Nice to know you’re still a fan. :D

I've wanted a physical coin for a while, and like I said before, I like the concept of NastyMining/NastyFans, not to mention the coin looks great... and given the commendable effort you have put forth towards the bitcoin community in general, I have no doubts about the potential for success in the Nasty* Brand. If it ends up being a loss on my end, hopefully you can put it to good use. Long story short, I'm in for one :P

Nice to see you're still able to cherry pick quotes.  :-X  ;D

I'm feeling awfully witty today.

(EDIT #2)
Edit: ibminer, weren't you the guy who offered to host a miner on our behalf and then when I sent it to you we never saw it again?

Not sure if you're trying clever wordplay here or not but outside of a 5oz coin, you never sent me anything.

The only time you and I had a discussion about a miner was when I was offering you 2 miners I already owned for free so you could use them, for additional seats. I believe you told me to post them in the thread and give them away to someone else. I kept my miners.  (my edit: ok, I thought I offered them (2 miners) for free but my memory was off -- had to go back and check the messages.)

EDIT#3 (Og is playing edit games, disappointing.  :-\   I'll try to keep each edit here as I see them.)

^ Like your edits?? (sorry, still feeling witty today... :) )

Look, I'm just trying to educate the newbie whom is asking about making purchases and you started circling like a shark, referencing your feedbacks, of which I am a part of. Where did I lie in my post?

I fully accept it was an unwise investment on my behalf.. but my decision was made based on how the concept was described to me in 2015 and who I thought I was dealing with in 2015. Live and learn, I guess.

Everything I've said is the truth.

You really don't want to start pulling out old PMs. I honestly have no interest in causing you any further damages to you or your organization and I'd prefer you not make me put you or me in any awkward situations. And no, this isn't a threat, just know that I will not have someone call me a liar when it is not true. It's unfair and uncalled for.

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.  I hope you do come out with coins.  I look forward to seeing how they stand up to the same criticism you give other makers and using your own words against you to justify calling you a scammer.  ;D

Very simple... I'll register a business, charge sales tax, and not scam anyone.  ;D

I'm genuinely excited.

You took after Al Capone - saw weak enforcement and made a killing.   History remembers him, as it will you, as a corrupt scammer.

I think that's just another lie.   :P  But it is time to build a road map on how to legitimize crypto.
