Title: Should there be notification on receiving merit?
Post by: iamsheikhadil on December 07, 2019, 02:42:23 AM
 ;D pretty much as the title says, I kinda think it would be nice to receive an email or a notification inside the forum if one receives merit with the option to turn the notifications off or on if anyone doesn't want notification. Plus notification for if someone mentions or quotes you, but that will be too much hurdle specially when many people might quote your post. I am sorry if this has been already asked before :D

Honestly, I believe people would receive too many emails. Some receive tens of merits per day/week. Maybe Piggy (the dev of the bot mentioned bellow can see if adding that to his bot is a viable option). :)

These will be available in the new forum software (released soon™). And while there is no official feature like this in the forum, there is already an unofficial bot that notifies you when someone mentions you or quotes your post, which is used by pretty much most of the active users. You can read about it here: [RELEASED] @mention notification bot - now with Telegram (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5023605)

IMHO, there's no need for this kind of notification.
- I do know that this might encourage users [some] to create higher quality posts [just for the sake of receiving those merit notifications] but users should shift their focus away from "the whole merit thing".
  • I've seen some users, trying way too hard to earn merits [it's quite annoying] and with the addition of notifications for merits, this just amplifies the whole situation.

forums send notifications through email for things that requires your attention and you have to do something about them. like receiving a PM and needing to reply to it, and generally things like that. when you receive new merit there is nothing you need to do about it, so receiving an email notification is considered spam. not to mention that the forum would have to send about 1000 additional emails per day (i could only find this topic (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3779983.0) for merit/day that is old, probably LoyceV has a better updated stats).

I for one would be thrilled to get a notification that I received merit since I don't really get that many merits from my posts(not a great poster but I still try to help if I can) but It'll annoying
for those who keep getting merits.

I read somewhere in this forum that there is a script that let you get a notification if someone mentioned your username or quote your post.

I have it for you. Around 630 emails per day and 4523 emails per week will be sent out by the forum as merit notifications.
Intra-day merits:
< snip >
(2) Median of intraday merits over the period is 629;
(3) 50% of observed days have their intra-day merits range from 532 to 759 (the interquartile range);
< snip >

Intra-week merits:
(1)   The median of intra-week merits is 4523;
(2)   50% of observed weeks (96 weeks in total), have total merits in the range from 4081 to 5095 (the interquartile range of intra-week merits).

Hopefully this forum can move away from being merit talk, and put some more emphasis on Bitcoin and global economics. At that point, people won't need to receive an email regarding a merit award, but will just watch their merit count increase,

But why? Your Merit total is shown right under your username. All you need to do is remember the last number, and click your username > Merit > loooooooong* scroll down to see where it came from.
I've done this for every Merit I ever received, and I don't think an email is going to make that less work.

You can of course use a generic page-change-notification service on the Merit counter in your profile. That service will regularly check it for you, and send you an email every time it changes.

*Just Merit source problems

I was thinking about adding this feature to my notifier project, but it's a bit tedious to implement, because the recent merit page doesn't show who received merit, only link to the message. But I might make it in the future if I'll have time and interest, so stay tuned.

I am still using your notification tool for quotes post,its good and never had any experience.Idea of OP also nice but not sure it will be implemented on the forum itself so excited for your merit notification update. :)

I would only really be interest in something like this - https://www.theguardian.com/culture/2012/oct/09/like-a-hug-facebook-vest-friends

Or those online orgasm things that cam girls seem to have rammed up their arse.

We can do better than some email. Let's take it to a higher level.

I don't like the idea of sending email notifications for every merit you receive,
but some kind of forum notification feature would be nice to have if it is optional

I do not see the need for such notification to be honest. Users who monitors the merits they are getting always checks their profile when they log in anyway. I don't know if it's just me but I prefer to have that surprise factor whenever I make a new post and see that my merit count changed.
