merits are not money. they are just a kind of thumbs up signal that someone found your post interesting
so try to make a post informative and thoughtful that actually gets people to learn from or want to know more be more involved in the topic.

You can get merit by creating useful and high quality posts on this forum and also your helpful responses to those who need help, Also, you should not ask merit from the people, you have to work and continue to post helpful posts and topics and stay away from spam and short posts, The merit system in this forum is what is a reward for informative posts that benefit everyone and will help your account to rise in rank in addition to activity.

You will get merits only if you don't think about them and focus on only getting merits.
Just participate in discussions and post meaningful ideas and opinions or share your knowledge with other members in the forum here. This is the best way to help others and educate people in the community. After all you will be rewarded for that.

What's the point in getting merit anyway? Does it make any difference or it just shows if your account is credible and trustworthy?

not really. there are a couple people i completely dont like their morals or mindset and i gave them 50merit each just for the sake of not giving a crap.
it was kind of like them gentle little pats on the back you give to a todler for having a tantrum and saying they done a good job for showing how silly they looked and hope they learn from it

some people use it like a bookmark placehold for interesting posts they want to review later. because the profile page lists merit given which can then become an index for later reference... much better than watchlists

It seems to me more important to write something that will be useful to people and not think about merit

Allows them to join signature campaigns which in return give out moolah.

And yes, attaining a senior rank makes you more trustworthy at a glance.

True I suppose, but bounties don't give out much money these days. The best are those that pay in bitcoin (rather than in a random new token that will tank towards $0 as soon as it becomes tradeable). For the bounties that pay in bitcoin, yes, you tend to need to be a high rank, for which you need merit... but also these campaigns usually have a very small number of participants, so your post quality will have a big impact on whether you are selected to participate. A high quantity of merit, particularly recent merit, is a good at-a-glance guide to your post quality.

And yes, attaining a senior rank makes you more trustworthy at a glance.
Merit can play a part in this, but so can your activity - the number of posts and the amount of time you've spent posting. I'd say in general someone with thousands of posts is likely to be more trustworthy than a random new account with very low activity... so I don't think merit is the main factor here.

True, but we're unable to view others' post count until we view the profile. Only the Merit is displayed hence we tend to look at those first.

I see that you have a lot of activities but you do not have a merit. Merit is a number that will give you a right to reach the next rank. Like your activity. So you need to earn merit by other people, they will give it to you if you are making a lot of good post here in bitcointalk.

I still barely understand. For example, if I want to give "thumbs up"/"bookmark"/(give merit) to someone, at which point can I do it? How do I receive sMerit for that, which are requirements for that? Like, I’ll quote 10 underappreciated new posts in Meta thread, and what gives - someone kind (with his own limited sMerit to spend) gives me sMerit or?.. Also, as far as I’ve understood, when I spend sMerit (half of Merit received), the former half of goes untouched, but the latter is spent whatsoever, or how exactly does that work?

You have to create your own abilities No one will ever give it to you There are many topics in the Bitcoin talk forum that you can post later but if your post is good and high quality then you will surely qualify and get merit. If you get merit you will gradually increase your rank However, if you do not post any spamming or copy you can lose the ID.

Let's put Merit aside, and think of it as an upvote. But in order to give upvotes, you must receive upvotes from other members first.

For every 2 upvotes you receive, you get to send 1 upvote. So if you have 50 upvotes, you have 25 to give away at your disposal. You can't send half an upvote (i.e. 1 merit = 0.5 sMerit).

And if you're wondering how to upvote posts, think of any that you think deserves them, just like how you like one because it's helpful. Here are several conditions that upvotes are given out for:
Quote
1. The reply was very helpful and easy to understand
2. You learned something new from that post, informative
3. The post was about contributing something good, such as improving the forums
4. You liked an artwork posted
... etc

So how you give it, it's up to you.

we can see some newly created accounts now that has earning more merits than usual,so in this point they are advantageous than those old  accounts that has limited merit earned .

for me Merit is much important than activity and post counts because it is easy to become active but it is harder to gain merits .

but in all?they are all important and each member needs to have all to grow and ranked up.
