The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, has announced that the platform will be funding a small team to develop a decentralized standard for social media.

In a tweet made by Twitter’s CEO earlier today, Dorsey said that Twitter plans to fund a “small independent team of up to five open source architects, engineers, and designers.” The end goal is to create a new decentralized standard which presumably will be for all social media. Twitter will be putting its weight behind the project and will, if successful, adopt this standard, someday.

For the love of God, Jack you've really surprised me today!

I think this is definitely a great decision by Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey. Since he's an advocate of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, he is planning to something for us to accept and adopt social media's decentralized standard.

I don't know what you guys are thinking of Jack Dorsey's move. Do you think we are so ready for the decentralized standard?

Just let me know about your opinion, reaction or feedback about this one. For me, this is definitely huge and Twitter looks to be ahead of the line!

It is not clear what is meant by the decentralized standard for social networks. Let them first create what they want, and then we will see how much this is necessary for users of social networks. And it will turn out like with a Libra coin. A lot of noise, and as a result, there may not be any coin. In any case, it will not have the effect that was previously expected.

Coming from the social network which has been known for censorship, it's hard to say the motivation behind this.

If twitter adopts this wholly, I'm almost thinking it's because they are getting tired of being expected to act as the gatekeeper of what is right/wrong in society & what's allowed on their platform.

Having a decentralized version of twitter (whatever that may entail) may give them an out in having to censor by simply switching to the narrative "well it's decentralized"

decentralized social media platforms never caught on. too clunky, no network effect. i suppose if a huge platform like twitter implemented a decentralized protocol, it might actually have a chance of catching on.

i assume that would mean no censorship, shadow banning, or other centralized means of control. i'm skeptical twitter would actually do that. wouldn't it destroy their paid advertising model? how are they gonna make money? they are a public company after all.

He just sees the potential of a startup and that's why he's venturing into that business and at the same time, as an advocate, it's a good reason for him to support those kinds of teams.

He's the owner of twitter and for sure he understands the decentralization and impact that will lie into social media. There's a probable inner reason why he's supporting the team.

Exactly, decentralised standard for social media? Never heard of that and so I have my skepticism here.


Everyone has their narrative behind it, we might not fully see it in the beginning, but I have a feeling that Jack is up to something here, just saying.

What did he mean by "new decentralized standard" is he planning to launch a twitter cryptocurrency. If he does then he if following the same path as Facebook CEO.

When a company owns & controls a platform, how can they set up a decentralized standard on that platform? whatever he is planning we need to wait and watch.

I also still don't understand the "new decentralization standard" adopted by the CEO of Twitter and maybe it is a new innovation that they will plan for in the future, the platform itself can control whatever they want, including decentralization standards and that is only tweet by Jack Dorsey there is no clear certainty.

There's going to have to be some form of moderation somehow. It may be decentralized/community based, but I assume there will be something.

I wonder how it would operate as decentralized, and how it would affect their operations. Such move is likely to be inspired by his love for Bitcoin. Although experimental, pulling off such R&D could change the game for social media companies, and would set them leading the race. It also does exhibit decentralized ideas that might promote Bitcoin, but not that much.

I still read a little on the news I still do not understand about decentralized social media, which is certainly certainly interesting because it is run by Jack Dorsey, I know he is a loyal bitcoin holder until now. He wants to do new things from his mind. , only supporting what he was working on with their small team, it seemed he would make something that had never been done by others

There is more possible ways to make the social media platform integrated with the blockchain technology, but going completely decentralized is little confusing. Already weve got steemit which functions over the blockchain. As an user mentioned such a level of advancement (decentralized social media) will be first adopted by the persons posting child porn.

I've been seeing for quite time that he's really into cryptocurrency. I've seen some new about him doing various activities regarding crypto and also saying positive comments about it. I find it actually a good thing that he is also part of us who sees the value of bitcoin. But of course he wouldn't invest such time publicizing his positive view on cryptocurrency if he's not into something. Though it's still vogue for me to visualize what he is planning about that decentralized standard for social media

This is a great development which is being backed by Jack Dorsey. Twitter as a social media has been quite supportive of the blockchain industry rather than its counterpart Facebook. I hope Jack comes out in the open when this project is ready to hit this space so that we an fully support it as a community but i doubt they would hold any IEO as such projects are likely going to be self-funded entirely by the team.

All modern people understand that bitcoin has potential. All other people, apparently, remained thoughts in the past.

Twister is already out there as a decentralized Twitter - there are even iOS and Android apps for it now.  In general, a decentralized version of everything is better than a centralized version, I will be interested to see what they have in mind over time.  Hopefully not just buzzwords.

Great development, though I doubt people with huge followers will ever migrate to the said platform knowing that it will take a huge leap to get from one place to another. But the initiative is great nonetheless. It would be fun if all social media platforms would be integrated into one hub though I doubt it will ever happen due to marketing and ads involved on some of these giants. They will refuse to let go of the share they have on the market thus making it harder for a decentralized social media platform possible.

There is a problem that you need to understand, social networking is difficult to manage. Up to now, there has not been any specific standard for a decentralized social network. Twitter is trying to be a pioneer in this area, this is a bold move. If you think about it, you can see that Twitter is the main vehicle for promoting cryptocurrency projects. From there, we can understand Jack's decision. I look forward to their development announcements.  :D

Twitter might be scheming something here but as Jack Dorsey suggested that he would implement a decentralized standard with social media and such as twitter let's just see and wait for further news about it, but as other social media had been very dark with cryptocurrency by banning all related advertisement regarding cryptocurrency and decentralized projects well twitter in the other hand was I think very open with cryptocurrency-related projects.

Me neither, though I didn't click on the article and just read what OP quoted.  Wouldn't a decentralized social media app put Twitter and Facebook out of business?  If you didn't have to rely on a company like one of those for sending tweets or whatever, it seems like they wouldn't be able to make money--but I don't understand any of the details of what the CEO is proposing, so I'm just thinking out loud.

This doesn't do anything for bitcoin, though, and I wish the Twitter CEO would figure out a way to incorporate btc into their platform or something.  Bitcoin is impractical as a tipping mechanism unless it worked like a faucet where you'd have to accumulate enough of it to withdraw, but there could be some other uses for it on Twitter.  Maybe. 

I don't use social media and don't care much about it, so I don't know how important it is for services like the ones Twitter, Facebook, and the others provide to be decentralized.  If that meant that your personal data couldn't be stolen or exploited, I'd be all for it.  But I'm not sure if that's what it means at all.

Twitter banned accounts before just because they were critisizing someone famous. I remember Nouriel Roubini was taking pride in reporting accounts that were almost instantly suspended.
Once someone with power gets annoyed by criticism twitter is there to apply a few of their thousand rules that it is impossible not to break.

For Dorsey, decentralizing twitter probably means whoever pays most will have his opinion posted.

A centralized social media company will sponsor a team that will develop a decentralized social media platform. Its like saying plastic manufacturers will sponsor a team that will bring awareness regarding harmful effect of plastic.
Lets wait and see how this social media look like.

Wow, that's great news! This guy is awesome, he's shown his pro-Bitcoin attitude before. This project sounds interesting, it kind of reminds me of a Pied Piper decentralized internet project from Silicon Valley. And since it's Jack, it's truly reasonable to accept Bitcoin to get integrated, in case a cryptocurrency is needed.
Shit, that sounds like a terrible downside. If something is not regulated, it seems that it should mean that absolutely nothing gets regulated, since otherwise there's a way to manipulate the system to repress people for various reasons... I think that a fine balance is yet to be achieved...

I like how Jack is  a pro bitcoin guy but the idea of decentralized social media may not work.

There will always people who'll post silly illegal stuff and I think the only way you can fight them is just pulling their plug. You can't do that in a decentralized system. I am not sure about this but maybe a voting system would solve this problem but then the governments will not like it.

But hey, the governments don't like bitcoin too (at least some of them) but they still can't kill it.

I don't think this is going to get too far. The likes of Google and Facebook used (the same) decentralized Instant Messenger (open source) protocol (XMPP) at first, but the first thing they did was not let it connect to the rest of the world (centralize it), thus ruining its first advantage. Later Google got rid it entirely for something theirs.

Even if twitter honestly develops and use an open decentralized standard, the others would likely not follow. Since my twitter account is probably gone, due to the new 6 month inactivity = delete, i would like to open an account elsewhere that still would be possible to follow by twitter users (and vice versa).

The other likely result is, of course, Goggle will jump in with their "even better" standard. So its like that xkcd comic (https://xkcd.com/927/)...

It's a really good thing, this will help to push the idea of decentralization if it happens to be successful. I have seen someone that once asked a question on whether there is going to be a decentralized social media platform and some people were saying it's unnecessary, and now that same idea is about to manifest. I hope that it works out and become a success, these are really what we need.

Decentralized social networks are decentralized and distributed among distinct providers. That means if you're using one of the social websites, you're able to communicate with others that uses other sites that are involved in the decentralized network. I don't really know for sure how people are going to react to this, but let's wait for it.
