Title: [WARNING]MinerJones Impersonator
Post by: MiLkz on December 22, 2019, 03:52:54 PM
An individual using the username: @harleyinhawai (noyvus), contacted me via telegram to sell gift cards.  They wanted to use ESCROW and decided upon using MinerJones.  After awhile a group convo was started with a fake MinerJones using the username: @minerjoens

It was a piss poor scam attempt, but I figured I would post a warning for everyone.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS SEND A PM ON BITCOINTALK TO CONFIRM WHO YOU ARE SPEAKING WITH BEFORE TRADING!

The same guy @harleyinhawai (noyvus) apparently tried to impersonate OgNasty's escrow service too by creating a fake telegram account for him in a btc to paypal exchange.

This was just reported here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5211668.0

The user in question - Herbert_kopf (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=2730270) (a week old account with close to 100 posts).

Yep, same guy.  I supported the scam tag for Herbert_kopf.

He has now deleted his telegram account, but I am sure he will be back under a new alias.

Same MO as this one (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5211668.0) where they try to impersonate OgNasty to be an escrow in the buying of BTC. The impersonation also took place in Telegram where the scammer tried to make it look like he is negotiating with the real OgNasty. It looks like this type of scams are getting more prevalent woth the use of TG. My advice is really do not take the negotiations through elsewhere or at least limit the negotiations from the escrow within Bitcointalk only.

I was almost scammed by a newbie in here with the username: BtcTheBest

He private messaged me in here asking me for assistance in buying a 10BTC cas. As he was a noob we took the conversation to Telegram (mistake)

He said he was talking to Krogo and had to pay him 13BTC but only had 12BTC and wanted to sell a Titan to make up the rest. We negotiated a price and on my recommendation of using Miner Jones as escrow. After giving him miner Jones’s handle in telegram he added “miner jones” to a group for us to make arrangement. It was a fake MJ, clicked on his name and it was spelt “Miner Jonse”

I kept asking for a pic of the coin with today’s date and a message that I would have him write on the paper and send within 2 mins. He failed that one, kept asking me so sent part payment first. “I said mofo it’s a lot easier to send a pic of a coin than it is to send btc”

Messaged the real miner Jones privately where he informed me it was a scam and to click the name and check the spelling. Thanks again MJ you saved me from being scammed.

Be safe collectors, it’s a dog eat dog world out there. Sad part is he seemed super nice. Illusions.

P.S. Happy new year and stay safe in 2020!!!

The Collectibles section has moved from username and date beside coin to most recent block / last 6 to 8 digits from the hash. Scammers will evolve so we are continuing to staying one step ahead.

This is not the first time it happen and it will not be the last, it's the new scamming right now, you should check every pm coming from telEgram or better verify it here first in Bitcointalk via PM, I'm sure these scammers are thanking telegram for helping them to scam people.

Thanks for the heads up. Scammers have also taken to impersonating inactive / semi-inactive escrows like Monbux and SebastianJu. They haven't been on the forum to counter their impersonators. I noticed a general uptick in escrow-related scams and wrote a post about it:

REMINDER: Do NOT use "forum escrows" off-forum! (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5263514.msg54838592#msg54838592)

Feel free to add anything I may have missed.

Thanks for letting everyone know about this brainless idiots activity. Its quite hard to detect all their account where they can change their username anytime. Its an good approach to encourage escrow users to contact you through forum PM directly "I do not have Telegram or escrow on there!!!" (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=346731)

You did a good job by opening this thread. We can't do nothing but increasing awareness among newbies about this kinda "Impersonator". If we can build a habit of "Using forum PM" among community users then IMO percentage of telegram related scam will decrease for sure.

Op thanks for sharing these scam way to remember and warn the bitcointalk user. These are now common way of scamming people now a days. You are lucky that you were aware enough of it and you saved yourself. The only solution is not use telegram without confirming first through bitcointalk.
