You just gave a link about the story of Coinbase's CEO and I think you should be the one telling in summary of the whole story, I didn't clicked the link. When I was introduced to bitcoin, Coinbase was already existing and it's really amazing that they are one of the earliest exchange that until now considered to be one of the giants.

is a BUSINESS that handles the exchange of cryptocurrency and fiat
it is a market place not a currency

it has not faced many fluctuations. it is the market that allowed people to trade other currencies on it.
