Title: Best way to protect your crypto against a natural disaster?
Post by: Abiky on January 03, 2020, 05:18:12 PM
When a natural disaster strikes (such as an earthquake or a hurricane) you'll need to protect your most valuable assets. While most people preserve physical cash for events like these, crypto proves to be a better solution (as it's intangible). The most common form of securing one's crypto funds is a paper wallet. However, this method is not resistant against dust, water, or even fire. Even hardware wallets are susceptible to harsh environmental conditions over time.

I know there's something called "CryptoSteel" which is a seed wallet that's fireproof, waterproof, and even shockproof. The only downside is the price which is quite expensive. Which is why, I'm looking for the best way to protect my crypto against a natural disaster that won't break the bank.

Any recommendations or suggestions will be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance. :)

You don't have to buy cryptosteel you made mentioned, why can't you just grab a stainless steel and write your recovery seed on it, safe from fire, water and bad environments too

Exactly. Actually we don't need that so called crypto steel why dont you just keep your altcoins and bitcoins online if you dont want it to be damage when natural disaster comes? Or you can keep it on the bank's safe much better.

I just found out about cryptosteel, a type of protective capsule made from solid metal structure parts.

but rationally I have to think of quick actions first because natural disasters may not always involve the three elements of dust, water, fire all at once, what often happens is the flood disaster and my anticipation is more on simple steps like preparing a private key on laminated paper and I will hold it as well as possible.

The basic price of CryptoSteel is around $79 according to their website which is too expensive to hide your assets inside of this CryptoSteel.

For me, If I have many assets that I want to protect for natural disaster I will make a backup of them and put them all or archive them in winrar with memorize password make just make sure the password is 12 character or more at least it takes so many years before they can bruteforce the password.
In my own rar backup I use the combination of my children's name with my birthday(in number) then I archive it again with different password that I mostly use to login with my laptop.

To make sure my assets and files inside the rar file is protected and it takes so many years or decades before they can get the files inside the rar file.

then I uploaded it to my Google drive as an hide or private don't make it public so that you are the only one who have access on this drive.

This my way on protecting them to any disaster so that once it happen you can just login your email to gmail and get that file and extract them with your known password.
This is recommended if you already memorize the password with your own because to me I still memorize the password of these archived files all important files are there including my seeds of my assets..

kind like engraver and write down there the seed. lol its going to be safe from disaster but it might not be safe from the people who understands its a seed. we all know its always BTC that people kept in their wallets so once they see 12 words or 24 words written or carved in a stainless steel, its what it is so put it somewhere safe that no one sees it. i wouldn't go that far though. just print multiple paper wallets and put it in an airtight plastic bottle.

Well you do not need any hardware wallet to keep your digital assets save, just use any online wallet with private key and you can access that anytime, anywhere as long as you are alive so no need to purchase any expensive physical wallets.

How about creating small numbers/alphabets  out of tiny ductile wires that are heat resistant? You could create & bind them together with another wire according to your private keys combination. . You could even replicate this and give your love ones each just incase one/few get lost. Everyone could wear them on his/her body or hide them somewhere safe. These is one of the cheapest ways I can think of.

Another thing people should consider is massive EMP attack that could wipe out much of the existing computer data held by the masses.  I guess people should be researching more on how to protect themselves from such attacks.

In my country there is a company that focuses on storage of private keys. Look at the website: https://www.bunkeroid.com/ - they send you metal plate with metal letters and you can make your backup more durable against fire and so on.  :)

Amazon has lot of heat and water proof cases which only costs us few bucks compared to the crypto steel which is nearly about a hundred buck but if someone having few thousands worth of bitcoin or cryptos then I wouldn't have any second opinion other than buying that cryptosteel.

I think "death" should also comprise natural disaster too. Well, the OP might have a reason for either a deliberate omission of it or not but we should always realize that death is more inevitable than any other disaster. Going forward my method to safeguard my cryptos against any earthquake or whatever would be to store my Private Key/Passphrase online. In my email to be specific. But I would have to split the secret letters into two and his them in two different emails addresses. That way a hacker will have to break my two different email addresses before s/he can get a hold of the complete access to my largesse.

This is a stupid idea, you will have to give up your recovery seed for them to write on the metal for you right? This means your funds aren't safe, private keys and recovery seed are meant no to share with any person

Protecting Cryptocurrencies always involves risks. But I don't think this CryptoSteel thing is very reliable.

1) Because we cannot produce this wallet ourselves, the private key can always be accessed by someone from outside. (Any person in the production process)

2) This wallet is designed not to disappear physically. So in this process, this wallet may fall into the hands of someone else. It may not be easy to hide.

3) International travels can be risky to carry with you. It can be noticed on Xray devices. Thus, there may be problems in passing through customs.

I don't think we need to buy expensive crypto steel. The world is very small nowadays, we can get the earthquake or cyclone's news at least about 3-4 days ago! Which is enough to take action to keep safe your assets. You can move your coins to exchange for a while, you can send a message your phrase code to your friends separately or you can send 24 mail with 24 different seed codes to your random friend's mail or write your seed on steel. And there are many ways to keep it safe. No need to buy a Crypto steel.

It's actually funny, reading the post on protective measure for cryptocurrency against natural disaster. I personally won't go through the tedious step of protecting my cryptocurrency wallet when there's a natural disaster. I believe the persons that would be eager to protect their cryptocurrency would be those with substantial value of tokens

My hard wallets are in a fire proof safe which is bolted down to my basement floor which is confined of metal.
Even if our home is torn to shreds my a natural disaster I think my safe will be the loan survivor of the mess

Which earthquake would you know 3-4 days in advance? This would be a force beyond nature. I don't think you need these steel wallets. But we're thinking the same thing for different reasons.
I think just buy a hardware wallets and back up its seed key and if you can, you may want to memorize that keys.

you can make your own crypto steel!
I made my own for less than €20.

I bought some offcut stainless steel 6mm thick enough to make one
for myself and one for my brother. > https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6mm-Thick-Stainless-Steel-Plate-off-Cut-Grade-316-185mm-X-120mm-/254465075612?nav=SEARCH

Tools used:
an angle grinder to cut the steel in half (just because i was making 2)
a ruler and metal scribe to create 24 spaces
a drill and bit to make 2 holes to screw it to a secret location
a letter punch set (with numbers) > https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9-27-36pc-Numbers-Alphabet-Letter-Punch-Set-Stamp-Metal-Die-Tool-Kit-UK-Fast-PP-/223428526856?nav=SEARCH

Keeping the private keys on cloud storage like google is not really safe because its not that much harder to be hacked and simple mistakes for phishing attack on your device could be resulted in total loss of all your savings.Private keys have to be stored offline.

If you have a hardware wallet then you are okay to ignore it. There are many ways to protect your assets during a natural disaster. Already you got enough idea about it,  for me, I would go and write my seed phrase on steel before the Earthquake.

I think the best bet is to note down the 24 words from hardware wallet on a pc or device that never connect on internet and make an archive with a password protected and put it on a cloud service or on email and if have and extra word added to passphrase to keep it in mind so can recover it and also even if someone get pass for archive they can't recover wallet without extra word.

Here is a sample on a scrapbpiece of steel of how to store a private seed
privately in a secret location in a house, garage or dog shed!

With Stainless steel thick enough it wont corrode and will survive a fire.

https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eijNPHTsSAs/Xg_AykL_xYI/AAAAAAAAAeg/NuvdjTHS9Gsg3qn2jEI1RRg1W2SU_2ylgCNcBGAsYHQ/s1600/DSC_0243.JPG

There are still a lot of people who think that storing private keys online is ok,
thats very risky business, holding back a word from the seed is only marginally
hampering an attempt to crack the code.

Storing them on a computer not connected to the web, what if the hard drive gets
corrupted?

Paper wallets are good, a lot of people use them, but for me it seems too fragile.

My lump of heavy duty SS fixed to a secret place is my preferred choice.

Everything is a form of marketing, we the common people think of writing the recovery seed on a sheet of steel. In future this will surely get into business form when more number of people get into the cryptocurrency network. Natural disaster can happen anytime, and we can't stand opposing it. Taking prior precautions will help in overcoming the problem. I believe cloud based storage with increased security to be the right choice.

Crypto should never be stored long term on online wallets or exchanges because they are targets for attacks.

You should only have your crypto on an exchange when you want to trade and withdraw back to your desktop wallet immediately after the trade is complete. Only use an online wallet in an emergency and ensure it is for a short a period as possible.

It it would be hurricane, it would probably just fly away and the one who finds it would end up using the private key. Only thing that's good for is for fire and flood. I would use safety locker in the bank, that would also bring guards to the table to guard your box where the key is.

I also have my seed stored on 2 encrypted USB sticks in a fire proof

You can store the private key online by adding some encryption by yourself. Thus, the password of the storage program may be the easier way to reach all your assets. Although I have never used it, there are projects in this market that offer decentralized cloud storage service. You can use one of the reliable one. IMO, solutions made by using non physical space to protect against physical damage make more sense.

I don't recommend cloud services for storing your private key, it's still a company you are handing down your valuable assets there, a vault is one of the good alternatives you can get a fireproof vault, but do not put your eggs in one basket, it's always a good option, create at least two backups and also store it in a vault but they should be on a separate place.

Cloud services will be solution, as long it is really secure from hackers i think it will be ok. If me i back up some of my private keys, account, 2fa code in a notepad and put it in 5 flashdrives and i update it every 15 days. And then to save it i save it on separate place with plastic to be waterproof, and 2 of it i carry it everywhere in my bag. Don't know where else to save my data.

Woww...cryptosteel, never heard of it but seems to me like a pretty good idea. How much does it really cost anyway @OP and looking at its important i think it would be worth its price. Anyway if you are so much concern about your budget then i guess your best option is to hold your keys on several multiple places digitally and physically. Don't forget to give roadmap to someone you trust just in case the unfortunate thing happens.

I never heard that so called protection but I think if its expensive you must secure youre wallet with simple one in case of incident like this ever occur. We dont know when this would happened and we should always have plan for this kind of event. For a starter I think is have a storage for youre back up seed phrase so it wouldn't be wet or something.

Keeping your altcoins online is very risky.  We have seen several cases of hacks and frozen accounts.  If you do not hold the private key of your altcoins, it is not yours.  I would go to keep it on a bank's safe.

There's a lot of options to make it safer on this days of advanced technology. Once drive or google drive served as your online cloud storage, and this thing is very safe for our data and other crypto wallets. You can keep your private keys, and keystore files or even the paraphrase combinations needed for the access of your crypto.

It's not that your hardware wallet holds crypto, your funds are linked to mnemonics, you can back up these words to some online service.

It would be good idea to encrypt the file containing seed words with password only known by you and then upload it, so even if malicious entity gets the file containing your seed you would be still safe.

During this time I put backups of private keys or other seeds in the cloud service besides the external drive and handwritten. Yes, of course, before uploading, I have protected it so that it is not easily opened by others.
Indeed the best option is to write it on objects that are not easily damaged or destroyed. But for me, it was too much trouble.

It is true that if a natural disaster would come and as long as the internet is still working, you can still ensure that your crypto is safe. However, what you have said that the hardware wallet was not needed is not true at all. He is asking for any recommendation that might become the answer to this possibility. Like any alternatives to Cryptosteel which is a seed wallet because we need it for the safety of our assets. It is always better to have a back-up or a copy just to make sure.

As I understand paper wallets are just a naming, you can store your private keys on other materials more persistently and keep them in your
safe vault
Yes, storing private keys in a safe place is very necessary, because by keeping our private keys safely will also help us protect our assets from hackers and attacks from greedy people.

In my opinion during a natural disaster that does not affect internet network access and does not affect your memory, it seems like everything will be fine.
most importantly you can store or remember your private key correctly and safely, and anticipate it in your own way that you think does not affect when there are natural disasters.

I think people is right it wiill be good if save our assets in something that undestructable, but i don't have any choice for now.

I think for very common solutions, you just have to write it down almost for every paper that you can easily bring with. The paper that Ledger provides for our seeds is just small and can easily be in our wallets to be brought everywhere.

I think it's a very good question and until now, I don't have a solution or other means of that for this kind of event.

For now, i only save my data at google drive.
I'll avoid this at any cost. I will not save it to any storage online.

well, even our accounts can be lost if we put our assets at home, or assets like gold, it's quite easy to lose. so, crypto can be one way to save assets that are quite useful when natural disasters occur. however, each person may have their own way, but crypto can be an option. to be honest, I also own 70% of my assets in crypto. apart from investing, this is also my way to save assets.

There are 2 ways. The first one is simple. Sell everything) Then you definitely won’t lose anything. But there is a minus, you will not earn. And the second one is not to go to your wallet every day, keep passwords on a piece of paper, not on a computer. Whatever security programs you use, people write them, and people can make mistakes.

Storing our assets or money in digital form will indeed be the best choice for protecting those assets in the event of a natural disaster. We will not lose our assets, because these assets are in the cloud server that we use.

but to save on crypto assets, you should choose stable coins, because the price movements that follow the USD currency are certainly safer from price fluctuations. Crypto like altcoin ethereum and others still have the risk to go down or up.
and don't forget to keep your private key or password in a safe place for easy access when natural disasters occur, if you have a hardware wallet you should just carry it wherever you go.

Keep 2-3 copies of the private key in different places or pierce a private key to a piece of metal that can be protected from these situations or keep it in mind.

Is not it possible that this paper will be affected by a natural disaster? Does it not burn on fire or remain under the clutter in the earthquake?

I think that you should aim for a combination of hardware wallets which are more resistant to natural damage than something like paper wallets, as well as a backup for your private keys or seed such as the cryptosteel (although there are many other alternatives out there that are available that could be potentially better in quality).

At the end of the day though, there is no perfect way to do this, so don't expect to be 100% safe.

The best you can do is to have multiple backups and do the aforementioned steps.

There is nothing more secure than the life proof crypto wallet but as you said the price is expensive well at least you're sure about the security of your crypto asset in every disaster. The risk of lossing your wallet does not include the protection though so theres really nothing is certain when it comes to wallet protection.

Saving private keys in the google drive is not a good idea since google drive connected to the internet. The best way that you can do is write the private key in the paper and save it the safety box, so no one will know if you have cryptocurrency. You don't need to save on the internet because when you send any data to the internet, you have a risk of getting hacked. Having a hardware wallet is a must if you want to protect your assets offline and not online because we don't know how safe to keep it on the internet.

Even the worst case scenario where online systems don't work you could potentially deal with paper bitcoin which you can print now. Nobody will ever want it and nobody will ever have ability to check it but in the end that is bitcoin and that is in paper, there is no safer method.

Even if there is only one computer left with internet, your paper money will be able to turned into bitcoin which I am %100 sure nobody will want and will be useless, if the world has no internet there are a lot bigger issues than having bitcoin or not having bitcoin, a world without internet is a troublesome place after all we moved our world into digital life in the past 20 years. However, if there is internet, then you can have bitcoin, it is quite simple just put it on your own pc or get ledger nano S and it is safe.

There is nothing better than physical referents for your private keys, such as plain paper. However, you need to think carefully about where to store these things.
If you are afraid of natural disasters, then you can save the backup copy of your key on any device or paper and hide it in a cell of a Swiss bank or bury it somewhere in a calm country not exposed to such dangers.
The main thing is not to forget cardinatas.

And what about paper that you will put into vacuum sealer and then you will put this bag into a some steel box and then dig somewhere in the garden. Isn´t it cheaper than CryptoSteel stuff?

Online wallets can be useful too but in dire situations where there's no good internet connection, it will be in disadvantage. Paper wallets can be stored as secured as possible and you can have back up copies of the printed keys as long as you keep it to be only accessible by you. Security do require more money so Cryptodsteel can be really worth it especially if you live in the kind of environment that has often experience disasters.

If you are storing a huge amount then why not go for it, it's worth it, based on what you are saying this is the first time I read about this wallet and it's a big help for those wants to fully secure their fortune, and about your issue, there are vault that are water and fireproof, I bought one for myself, and it's not really that expensive since it's only small.

I recently heard about crypro steel, which it is also an offline wallet that you also don't need any specialised tools or third party software involvement.

Thanks for this, mate. This is a great alternative to CryptoSteel that wouldn't break the bank. It's best to use a strong encryption algorithm in order to prevent hacks or theft when uploading your utmost sensitive information (crypto private keys) to the cloud. AES encryption seems to be the strongest nowadays, that's hard to break with today's computers (depending on the length of the passphrase). It's best not to use passphrases that are too hard to remember, in order to easily access your crypto funds from the cloud in the future. Redundancy is important to prevent the loss of our funds from any undesired situation. This means that the more cloud services you use to distribute your cryptocurrency data, the better it'll be to prevent data loss.

For instance, it's recommended to make several copies of private keys encrypted on various USB flash drives for convenience. Putting them on a safe box in the basement, looks like the smartest choice to make. :)

Yes. There's nothing that's 100% safe. But spreading multiple copies of our most valuable assets would minimize the risks of loss as much as possible. I'm often inclined to methods that would help me secure my crypto assets without breaking the bank. It seems that storing crypto on the cloud in an encrypted archive would be the most cost-effective way to protect one's digital valuables against natural disasters. There are many other ways to do this besides the cloud, but I think spreading the encrypted keys across the Internet would be often best than doing so physically (hard drives, flash drives, etc.).

Of course, if your crypto holdings are extremely valuable, you'd go for a "CryptoSteel" than anything else. For $79, you can't go wrong when it comes to securing crypto against fires, water, and shocks. But the average person, would look for the most affordable way to secure his/her crypto without spending too much. Just my opinion :)

do not need any security wallet that is resistant to fire, water or others to be able to maintain the security keys that we have in case of a disaster, a strong memory is certainly the most valuable to be able to maintain the wallet security key that we have by memorizing a unique password that we have made it so that it can be accessed again when it gets an internet connection again

what do you mean without giving data account  ? you actually give your full account once you give your private key and/or other options like password in order to give access to your account  and what if you and your family members were on the same situation when tragedy strikes  ? its still useless if they have your infos to your crypto account because you are all in danger but we dont know the faith of everyone else , what if they survived and you didnt  ?

Yes, it is free but it has one big drawback. you can very easily forget the first letter or lose some part of your key. in general, disasters will not make crypto disappear, everything will still be stored in your wallet. the problem is, the impact of the disaster can make the internet network down and you cannot access anything including your crypto wallet. then the most vital thing is, the device that you use to access the crypto, when a natural disaster occurs and it turns out to result in damage to your device, you also cannot access it. although it is not physical, but the disaster and its effects can make us unable to access crypto.

as a simple example, the device and connection to access are the tools, while crypto is the subject. if the device is not available, then we cannot access the subject. while the subject will still continue to be there.

The use of hardwallets will still be very vulnerable in such severe conditions.

Best way is multiple offline backups, paperwallets, .dat files saved on usb, and stored in different secure locations.  If disaster happens in one area you will be fine because you have your backups elsewhere.  Whatever you do, make sure you make at least one backup, too many stories of lost crypto out there.

Have you considered saving everything in hardware wallet and then depositing in safe deposit boxes in multiple location if you are living in a fragile area which is susceptible to natural disasters around the year and it is the cheapest way than trying for other methods.

Tell them how to use priv key, how to withdraw fund from wallet to exchange and how to do basic trading. Thus you will have educated helper and they may use your btc in your absense. Obviously you have to chose most trusted members of your family.

Thanks for the tip. This is definitely a must, in order to preserve my crypto funds against death. In case I don't manage to survive a natural disaster, a relative could easily access the crypto funds in my absence. It'll hard for me teach most of my family members about crypto and Blockchain technology (as they're not tech-savvy at all), but I'll do my best at it. Instead of a normal crypto wallet, I think that a multi-sig wallet would be best for this situation. Other family members will still be able to unlock the crypto funds if they don't manage to find my crypto keys (or seed). It's always best to have a "Plan B" just in case, to preserve your crypto funds for future generations. ;)

Best way is multiple offline backups, paperwallets, .dat files saved on usb, and stored in different secure locations.  If disaster happens in one area you will be fine because you have your backups elsewhere.  Whatever you do, make sure you make at least one backup, too many stories of lost crypto out there.

Exactly. Redundancy is key towards protecting one's important data from undesired events in life. The cheapest way would be to make several digital copies of your crypto private keys encrypted across several cloud services. I'd use Google Drive, OneDrive, and even Dropbox to store multiple copies of my utmost sensitive crypto private keys. In the event of a natural disaster (like an earthquake), I can remain confident that my funds will still be safe even after being disconnected from the Internet for a couple of years from now.

The last resort would be to store copies of crypto keys in a physical form. I've toppled with something called "ColdTi" which is a cryptocurrency seed wallet that's made out of pure titanium. By punching (or engraving) your crypto seed on the card, you can rest assured that your funds will be safe for a very long time. This is a cheaper solution to the "CryptoSteel" cold storage wallet that's also waterproof, fireproof, and shockproof. With a cost of $20.99 at Amazon (click here (https://www.amazon.com/ColdTi-Cryptocurrency-Storage-Anti-Tamper-Unbranded/dp/B077CYKHZ6/)), you can't go wrong with using the "ColdTi" to protect yourself against a natural disaster. :)

How about writing your seed on paper, scanning the paper, encrypting the scanned image and finally uploading in your email account.
Always distribute your coins into multiple wallets, never store all your wealth in one wallet. That’s my suggestion on subject.

Its better to create your private email and save the seeds there, it will be safe as long as the computer that you will be use is safe. Natural disaster is not an easy thing, you must have the funds to support you if ever so I also believe cryptocurrency is the safe place. My suggestion is that, memorize your seeds but make sure to put it on something that is really safe, if its not that big then open an account on the best exchange that we have.

Natural disaster is almost impossible in my country only if there would be some crazy water disaster, where our country floods it would be very bad.
The place where I live is about 5 meters under the sea water level, so if something like that would happen we are pretty screwed.

However the thing I wonder is what would happen when a man made or even alien disaster would happen something like a huge Emp or Nucleair bomb.
If the whole world would be without electricity that way no one is mining Bitcoin or could send it, that would be pretty bad.

I don't think any cold storage is indestructible if natural disaster were to occur. Only cloud storage will survive in the case a disaster happened even though it's not the most safe but you will be able to access your log in from anywhere.

The best way in my opinion is to write a seed on paper and store it in different physical locations without first and last word. First and last word you memorize your self. In case you want to recover your wallet, write first and last word to get the complete seed. There are many such free methods which everyone can device himself.

I think its better to back up private keys in many ways, not only to depend on single method but trying different methods could work. Because if we think of natural disasters, there’s always a possibility that physical back-ups could be destroyed or lost.

Great idea. I've never thought about something like this before. Thanks! Speaking of images, I had a crazy idea of writing the seed on a text file with my computer offline, encrypt it, then hide it under an image (steganography). This way, no one would notice there's something unusual that could be linked with something sensitive/private. Uploading it to multiple cloud services, would prove to be wonders for preserving one's crypto funds against a natural disaster. Nowadays, there are many ways to do this limited to your imagination. With paper wallets, multi-sig addresses, and even cold storage cards made out of solid metal (Titanium, Stainless Steel, etc), you can safely store your crypto for many years to come.

Among those methods mentioned, I believe that paper wallets and digitally-encrypted files would prove to be suitable for protecting your crypto funds against a natural disaster without breaking the bank. For those more inclined in spending a little bit more, there's the option of cold storage cards like "ColdTi" and "CryptoSteel". But these require you to punch out or engrave your seed on them to be able to work as intended (which doesn't seem to be the easiest route to take for newcomers into crypto). ;)

With such success, if you include creative thinking you can laminate a paper wallet yourself and cover it with fire-resistant varnish, it will come out very cheaply and practically)

You can also protect your cryptocurrencies from the natural disasters by storing it up in an online wallet which you prefer to use depending on your standard or the wallet that suits your needs and wants. You just need to secure that you have chosen a reliable and trustworthy online wallet for storing up your assets which is now far away from the effects of natural disasters. If you are not secured on putting your assets into an online wallet, you can also store it in offline wallet that's why we do have hardware wallets for that. You just need to be responsible on keeping your hardware wallet into a safe and secured place together with your seed, private key or password you have used to secure your wallet. Better put it on a water proof case so that it will not be destroyed when there is flood and in that case you can still access your assets even without internet that might happen once communication towers are down due to strong typhoons. Any way you prefer will be good as long as you are also responsible on storing up your assets in a safe place away from the effects of natural disasters.

Wow man, that's some serious paranoia out there lol.
It's enough for me to write it own with paper + pen or just print them (home print of course). get your safe raeady & there you go.
Also i prefer the online storage, it's my best, encrypted .rar passworded file + phone verification to open it & you're safe enough.

Just make sure that you have back up of your wallets not only in your personal computer, as it might destroy all the time, so you just need to make sure that you have back up in your wallet too and of course you should have someone you trusted with to know your passwords, back up files and should know how to set up in case of emergency.

I think putting it in a ledger and put it in somewhere safe maybe a vault box or something, a paper wallet (however it's immune to water and fire) well for me the best way to protect cryptocurrency is to memorize your seeds and delete all the information in regards your wallet.

it means it's only you and no one will never know your passphrase or seed because its stored in your brain however this is very risk because if you just missed 1 letter from the word/s or one word you will not be able to recover all your bitcoins or cryptos.

I think that you can use the encryption program to create an encrypted container in which you put the data you need.
Then send this container to several cloud services. Considering that all the data will be in the container, the keys for decryption of which only you have,
you will be sure that they will not be able to decrypt it even if the cloud service is hacked, so the only thing to be afraid of is disconnecting or destroying the servers of the service itself.
In view of this, it is better to use two or three services with servers in different parts of the world. But the keys for decryption you have to remember.  ;D

In my own idea, I think it's always a safe storage for our digital asset of we have a cloud storage account which confidentialy registered with you. You can store your access keys on that cloud including the seeds or whatever you have to gain full access on your wallet. Any hardware wallet can be affected with natural disasters and it's prone of damages or any form of fire will destroy it.
That's the only protection that is best for now, we can't trust any other physical storage like a vault or something.

Storing your private key or seed on more places, the chance that two diffrent places will be damaged by natural disaster is close to 0. But I know that everyone here is paranoid and that is pretty normal when you realize that you are fully responsible for your money.

I have an idea, make a code using a phrase for your BTC key, if you are afraid it will burn or get wet if you use paper, and it's too expensive to buy materials that are fire and water-resistant, then the easiest is to make a tattoo on your body using the code the. Simple is not it? but make sure you remember the key code, don't let yourself forget it,  ;D.

In storing private keys, what I do is store it in an online wallet, then I also have my flashdisc as well as paper wallet. It is safe to always have back-ups. As for the natural disasters, it is easy to put these things into a safe place anywhere in your home, banks or if not possible, keep it to yourself but just make sure that you yourself is also safe when that natural disaster comes. Your wallet abd private keys are safe but who will use it and benefit from it if no one can access because the owner died from that natural disaster. Everything will be useless if that ever happened.

t is best to have a hardware wallet that lies in a bank cell. Access to the cell must be granted to relatives and heirs in case something happens to you during a natural disaster.

Really funny and bad way to secure your asset. What will happen if you lose your body part where you made the tattoo? And putting tattoo on skin is invasive and not healthy. Young and old people will never find it a suitable way, mommy will never allow. May be you posted a way without enough thinking.

Storing your private key or seed on more places, the chance that two diffrent places will be damaged by natural disaster is close to 0. But I know that everyone here is paranoid and that is pretty normal when you realize that you are fully responsible for your money.

In other words, one should have "redundancy" in mind. By spreading crypto keys worldwide, you can rest assured that your crypto funds will stand the test of time. A material like "Titanium" could be used for engraving your crypto seed that will last for a very long time. It's a very strong metal that's quite affordable. Something like the "ColdTi" cold storage wallet card made of Titanium, will suffice. Then, you'd place other copies of your seed on an image encrypted inside a .zip archive. That compressed zip file could be sent to various cloud storage services (Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, etc.) for complete redundancy of your hard-earned crypto funds. In the event you lose access to the Titanium cold storage wallet card, you could simply resort to the cloud to retrieve your funds at any point in time.

There are hundreds of ways to safely store and protect your crypto against a natural disaster. All you need to have is a little imagination/creativity to prevent the loss of your funds in a blink of an eye. It's always important to let know your closest family members about how to get access (and make use of) your crypto in case you don't survive a natural disaster. As long as you have a "Plan B", your funds will never get lost. The Cryptosteel is definitely a good choice for storing your crypto for years to come. If you have the money to afford it, I'd say that this is the best thing out there that will help you protect your crypto against any natural disaster.

Nonetheless, it's good to know the various ways of securing your crypto for the foreseeable future. With good planning, you'll be able to rest assured that your money is secure no matter what happens in the real world. That's the beauty of being our own bank with crypto and Blockchain technology. Just my thoughts ;D
