Title: Crypto goes to Geocaching
Post by: cygan on January 11, 2020, 05:41:13 PM
i had this in mind all the time and today is the time to create a thread with the topic geocaching and crypto.  ;)

i personally have been a very active geocacher for several years now and find the whole game a great balance to my professional life.
for those who don't know geocaching - here you can learn everything about this game

https://www.geocaching.com/ (https://www.geocaching.com/)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocaching (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geocaching)

i would like to make a list of various caches in this thread that have something to do with Bitcoin or the cryptocurrency in general. since the game is played all over the world i would list the caches per country

i would be very happy if there are several cacher among the users here in the forum and if you would tell me the caches from your country with reference to Bitcoin/crypto.
i would then extend the list in this post

Crypto and Geocaching seems like a good match. I’m sure with a little innovation a great game could come out of it.

thats right.
as a crypto fan, solving a mystery cache is a lot of fun and you can solve this type of mystery faster than someone who is not involved in crypto

Can you help me understand how can geocaches be bitcoin related?
My understanding of geocaching is just hiding a notepad with a pen in a waterproof box  :D

Interesting.
Did you hear for XYO Network project ? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3040825.0

Its a first, decentralized Proof of Location network.
You download app on your smartphone and by moving in the real
world, device determine if you are at specific XY- coordinates and as reward
you get "coins"  which can be exchanged for XYO, ethereum based token.
So its called geomining.

There is a lot of use cases like payment-upon-delivery services, package tracking, etc.
and everything is recorded on blockchain in real time.

very interesting
have you tried all this yourself?
would be a nice opportunity to collect some XYO coins while geocaching

I don't think this would ever go mainstream.

I played Ingress  (https://ingress.com/)for a few years.   There were location spoofers everywhere.  Niantic  (https://nianticlabs.com/en/)could catch them by movement anomalies (move >10m in a second in a wooded area) but if you don't need to keep your game open all the time and just start it after you spoof your location they can't detect that.   Crypto investors would not stick around long.

There is network of NFC/ bluetooth location markers, at least in Poland, it's used to find missing luggage etc.
Plus you could think of some kind "Proof of visiting location", so other users have to confirm that

EDIT: XYO has Proof of Location  :)

A "proof of location" service would be something you could make money off - even if you limited it to the country.

For example, taking a picture in front of the Eiffel Tower would prove you were in France.  AI can eliminate the fakes, but it needs to be automated.

XYO does not have the feature.   I can spoof my location as mentioned.  I can duplicate the bluetooth/nfc id, even in Poland.

Edit:  I guess AI can be trained to take any selfie and calculate the exact location of the sun.  First person to do that (2021 probably) will have a very nice $$ patent.

For the last 10 - 12 years I have been BIG into Geocaching. I have hid quite a few.

I am from the UK and would be more than willing to place some about.

Is there anything specific you would like me to add in the capsules? Maybe a link to this thread or even a note how to get started in BTC / Crypto?

it would be great if through the caches, which have the theme Bitcoin or cryptocurrencies, people then deal with it or deal with the topic

@BitcoinPenny
do you also do geocaching in your free time or how did this tweet come about? ;) 8)
to send a Bitcoin penny as a travelbug into the wide world would also be a cool idea ;D
