What upgrade or update has had the most positive impact on the crypto community in your opinion?

On the top of my head, probably BIP39[1]. It's the reason why we can use mnemonic phrase backups(those 12-24 word backups that are always recommended that you store offline) with our SPV[2] wallets like Electrum today.

I agree. I was going to say exactly that.

Deterministic wallets certainly were a game changer here.

Imagine having to save each private key separately? I have dozens of addresses,  I would go crazy

It is even bad for security and privacy, as we would have an incentive to reuse addresses to avoid saving more private keys.

But I guess recently, I would go with the Segwit. But there are a lot in the line, if I'm not mistaken.

Definitely underrated. Far more important than SegWit in my opinion. I expect a lot more people to answer SegWit here in this thread.

If you need to make sure that Bitcoin will be as secure and as bug-free as possible, we need to be extra extra strict with update proposals. If you want upgrades that are "more friendly", or those upgrades that are mainly just decided and automatically pushed by just a few people, go with centralized altcoins.

an important upgrade to be sure, but most people take deterministic wallets for granted. segwit was far more memorable due to the block size debate reaching a fever pitch w/ the UASF movement. segwit activation and the launch of bitcoin cash was the culmination of several years of bad blood in the community. we've never seen anything like it before or since.

SegWit: most memorable
BIP39: most positive impact

SegWit simply had more conflicts in the community and drama in general hence it being more memorable. It's just slightly a bit less more important than the BIP39 in my opinion.

Like everyone, I also highlight SegWit and BIP39,it was 2 of these updates that caused the maximum benefit for bitcoin. But personally, I would still highlight SegWit, in my opinion it solved much more complex problems that all users had to deal with.

in my opinion the most memorable bitcoin upgrade is Segwit because since the implementation of segwit on bitcoin, all users can make transactions faster and because there are applications in bitcoin, now we often see bitcoin being used as a payment method as in Japan almost all stores accept bitcoin, I think this is thanks to one of the advantages segwit.

SegWit, since there was so much drama around it, and so many forces opposed it, but the community still came victorious so miners and businesses had tot accept our terms, and the minority of bitcoin haters finally forked themselves off. And lets not forget UASF, it was a small movement that even some Bitcoiners viewed as too radical, but still it was important in defeating the SegWit2x crowd.

Some level of centralization definitely has its advantages over pure decentralization. Besides, there are plenty of entities and people within Bitcoin that exert a considerable amount of soft influence over the entire ecosystem. It is done more in narrative formation than anything but that is still real power if people fall for it hook, line, and sinker.

I was not around when it happened, but on the 15th of August 2010, a huge bug was found in the code by Jeff Garzik, where 184 billion coins was created out of thin air. < Block 74638 > The two Core developers Gavin Andresen and Satoshi Nakamoto quickly purged the 184 billion BTC transaction from block 74638 and the bug was fixed.

I think, if nobody spotted that quickly, we would have had a lot more problems and the whole experiment would have failed. Who would have trusted a currency, if hackers could create billions of coins out of thin air?  :o

That said, we do not even worry much about the millions of toilet paper money that are printed by government each day.  ::)

Probably this. Was about to say Segwit and the day I saw bc-- addresses but this definitely took me to a rather poor memory of my first searches for bitcoin. I was, for the most part of 2013 (especially July) having a hard time storing all private keys and determining which is which. Perhaps that was one of the reasons why I left bitcoin and returned in 2014 where everything was relatively easy (at least for me) to operate.

Segwit also takes a spot due to the drama it has generated since its initial documentation. It also took a couple of months before services and other explorers implemented the new format.
