love this project. have been following it closely for years now. very much looking forward to seeing it organically grow and become an internet game-changer like torrents and bitcoin were prior to this.

i note: To use the Particl Open Marketplace, you will need to fund your wallet with coins and hold Public AND Anon balances.

The Public balance is used to pay for listing fees, flag items, and vote on proposals.

Very good Project, they should collaborate with Monero on a decentralized swap mechanism in wallet.

The RingCT + Coldstaking Protocols and p2p decentralized marketplace with trustless escrow is very well thought out and makes Particl unique.

Also the Coldstake Staking mechanism is very nice for low cost decentralization and securing the p2p network. You could even connect to a staking pool, if you cant afford a raspberry or vps for example.

Tor+RingCT on Bitcoin Codebase, that really preserves your privacy.

This clearly explains the necessity for a project like Particl, who focused on privacy within the eCommerce sector, to exist. If you've just found out about Particl, this is most definitely a MUST WATCH. After all, decentralizing eCommerce is the next logical step after decentralizing currencies, and there still is no other project other than Particl doing it (with privacy in mind).

Or as the world's only true decentralized trustless anonymous P2P Open Marketplace ?

The escrow is a significant, innovative feature.

For me, I was sold once I realized that RingCT privacy transactions are mandatory to engage in commerce on the marketplace. Who wants to be tracked & monitored and then have their data sold to who knows who? Marketplace privacy is important.

Oh yeah, have you seen that eBay is now actively taking down any listing with "Coronavirus" or related terms in the listing, and that they are now forbidding the sell of masks (N95, N100, etc), hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes, and etc? The reason is they don't want price gauging, but really, this is censorship at its best and a great example of why NORMAL people need a censorship-proof marketplace like Particl.

No, you don't need to be selling weird and sketchy things to be censored. Sometimes, just the context or a specific situation will lead you being censored by third-parties. This is one of the best examples to date.

Read that people, and the reason why decentralized marketplaces are poised to become big at some point in time in the future will become obvious. Welcome to the inaugural Particl March Madness Bracket Pickem contest!

For those of you who are unfamiliar with the annual American college basketball tournament, it's like this:

There are 64 teams to start the tournament, you pick which team you think will win each game. It's is more or less pure gambling, some people can have more knowledge than others but the vast majority of people that enter these things are doing it purely for fun. Even a professional sports better would have a very small edge at best.

50 part per bracket, you can enter as many bracket as you like.

Payouts will depend on number of entries but we will probably do something like 1st = 60% 2nd = 30% 3rd = 10%. If we don't get many entries then we can make it winner-take-all. I will announce payout structure before the first round games.

That is really awesome :D THAT'S the power of unstoppable marketplaces and why they're badly needed. I think...give it a few years and this concept (decentralized marketplaces) is really gonna start growing on people. Particl and other decentralized marketplaces are way ahead of their time, which is good, because it means once the general population is going to "get it", they'll be technically well advanced and ready for adoption :)

Very NICE! Particl has just been added as an asset on the mobile version of the privacy and security focused light wallet Flare Wallet. That means we can now store, send, receive, and swap PART for any of the other available assets within Flare Wallet’s ecosystem. It is a non-custodial wallet, meaning that their team doesn’t have access to your private keys at all, and is available on both mobile and desktop platforms. Their team is also working on integrating atomic swaps into their swap engine, which means that it could be a very interesting solution for atomic swaps / trustless swaps on Particl's marketplace. That'd really increase Particl's resilience and resistance to censorship. Really pumped about this ehe! Hi Particl community members and developers, can anyone give me close summary about the project? Is there still a active developement and a vision for the next few months and years? Is there a actuel roadmap where i can also find some informations about the current state of work? Is Particle and it´s market a real anonymous market or are there some secutity issues?

That are some very good questions, would be interesting to hear some answers. I also was a investor long time ago, before there was the rebranding from Shadowcash to Particl. But from time to time a watch this coin to see their archievements. The current price is very cheap and i will buy in again in the next few days, because i still believe in this project and hope it will grow again to one of the top projects.

It seems that the market is growing at its own pace in any case Particl is a unique project it is a leader in the B2B B2G B2C field I use myself for some shopping and it's very efficient. I strongly recommend. whether you are an individual, a passionate person or an institution Particl is the Amazon of the blockchain, but you know what to do  ;)

AMAZING!!!! Very good job guys, there will be translations in different languages in the next wallet? it's a must! especially since Asian, Indian, Russian, US, CA, AU, AF, EU markets can all be connected together and trade on the Market place.

Yep there will, the functionality is already baked in for the most part, I know the devs were working on this a few weeks ago. Not sure translations will be available in the next update but it's one of the features that should be ready soon :)

Today is the first such development update! Here are the latest progress updates, as reported by Development Manager Henk Swardt.


Core

Our beloved Tecnovert has been hard at work, Particl Core 0.19.1.1 has been released which includes some improvements required by the Ledger team.

Merged Bitcoin 0.19.1 backports.
Added generatemnemonic command to particl-wallet
Qt receiving addresses table displays relative paths.
Qt receiving addresses page can verify an address on a hardware device.
Path of change address is sent to ledger hardware devices[/li]

Desktop

The new Core version was successfully tested against Particl Desktop 2.3.x and everything is working correctly. Thus, Particl Core 0.19.1.1 has been pushed to all existing Particl Desktop 2.3.2 clients and to the current work-in-progress (the future 2.4.x release) builds as well.

Good progress has also been made to the new Particl Desktop client. The bulk of the rebuilding of the listing template creation functionality is now almost complete. These changes will still need to be re-visited and updated at a later point to cater for the new changes being introduced in the market codebase, but that should be a minor update and quick to do.

Market

A large portion of the refactored market codebase is in the process of being made available as part of the feature branch we use for GUI integration development.

Swap Engine

We have added and made ready a new exchange bot and have been adding and testing some additional coins to the in-app swapg engine of Particl desktop. The tests have been successful, keep an eye out for new coins to be available on Particl Desktop once the big Infinite Markets update comes out!

This should get some more people digging around Particl and using it with their favorite cryptocurrency.

Hardware Wallet Playground

An easy to setup development and test environment for hardware wallets & their integration with particl-core has been set up. The goal is to make an automated test suite against emulated hardware wallets. It is very much under active development, but PRs are appreciated. After months of relentless development, we are proud to finally announce that the Particl V3-testnet build is now available for public access and testing!

As a reminder, Particl Desktop 3.0 is Particl’s most significant update since its inception in 2017.

It introduces new functionalities and enhancements to the desktop application as well as a significantly rewritten and improved market codebase. The end result is an experience that’s faster, simpler, smoother, and much more lightweight for your computer to handle.


Particl V3 makes way for many new features and functionality that have been long-anticipated by the Particl community, adding the next logical steps for our mission of delivering the most secure and private online marketplace on the web. Some special tidbits to mention are:

• Markets and Storefronts allow sellers to have their own brand stores or theme stores and determine who can access them. It also enables community markets.
• Market identities allow you to create multiple shops, markets, and listings without creating any association between each of them. Multiple markets or storefronts can also be linked to the same seller so that he can benefit from the reputation he's gained.
• Coin control allows users to define precisely which of their coins, no matter in which of their addresses they are, should be used for transfer.
• Enhanced privacy due to payment of listing fees for spam prevention with anon funds, adjustable ring signatures that now default to 24 ring members, the freshly introduced UTXO splitter, etc.

As you are probably aware, the Particl team has proceeded with an emergency hardfork on Thursday the 25th of February, 2021, that temporarily disabled RingCT and CT transactions to fix a critical vulnerability in the code. This announcement will disclose the nature of the vulnerability and provide preliminary details surrounding the event.

If it's already opened up, please shut it down completely and restart it.

Particl V3 Progress Report (07-MAY-21)

With the week coming to an end, we’ve prepared a new Particl V3 progress update we’d like to share with you. It highlights all the progress that has been made over the development of Particl V3 and indicates what are the items that are going to be focused on next week and beyond.

Since our last progress report, several issues have been resolved while others have progressed well. As Particl’s Lead Desktop Developer Arnold Bansemer has been working on the list of outstanding issues, some minor issues that need to be fixed have been identified. Additionally, documents containing popular community requests and suggestions have been re-visited, and a couple of extra items have been implemented as a result.

Without further ado, here is a list of the items currently in progress and those remaining.

Note: Some items that were present in the last progress report are not included in this one. In all cases, that’s because they have been successfully completed.

External Links

Allow external links to be rendered in the user's browser, rather than opening a new webview app-based window. This is a Particl Desktop specific change.
Flagging Markets

Flagging markets (markets that the user has either flagged or voted on to remove) prevents the processing of activities that the flagged market impacts. Examples are attempting to remove the market, editing categories on the market, or creating and editing listings for that market.

Some of the issues that were previously causing problems have been fixed. However, there are still issues that need to be fixed up. This is a market back-end specific change.
Expired Listings

Expired listings that are still in a cart should not be removed when the MP routine to clean up expired listings automatically is run. This is a market back-end specific change that’s completed and only requires to be merged.
To Be Completed

The following items are placed in the order that they are planned to be worked on.
Orders Getting Stuck in Shipping Phase

In the buy flow, releasing funds to complete the buy flow for an item before a possible shipping message has been received results in the order status becoming stuck in the 'Shipping' state despite being complete. This is a market back-end specific change that is likely already fixed but requires a bit more testing.
Miscellaneous Client Startup Issue

Had a report that starting the client with a locked wallet results in some startup issues (unlocking the wallet and starting the market app again appears to have fixed it). This is a Particl Desktop specific fix, and it still requires further investigation.
Dynamic Quotations

This is not a bug but an intended addition to Particl V3. Add dynamic quotations into the Particl Desktop startup splash screen. This is a Particl Desktop specific change.
Windows Startup Bug

A zmq.node error causes startup issues for some Windows users. The issue makes launching and properly using Particl V3 impossible for these users. This is a Particl Desktop specific change.
Delete a Product From the Inventory

This is not a bug but an intended addition to Particl V3. This will let you delete products from your inventory if you don’t want them to be displayed anymore. This is both a particl Desktop and market back-end specific change.

Once at least all the above items, except the last two (the Windows issue and the product deletion), are complete, we should be ready to release the next testnet release candidate for Particl V3.

In the meantime, don’t miss Particl’s upcoming CCS votes for the election of output claim managers and the introduction of a new decentralized treasury model. The first vote is going to take place on Wednesday, the 12th of May, 2021. You can find the details of the proposal here.

While it's already possible to vote for this proposal, votes will only start being counted starting from block 936,128. Regardless, it's highly recommended to set up your node to vote for this proposal right now.

That's because each proposal has a quorum requirement of 20%, meaning 20% of all the blocks within the voting period need to be voting for or against the proposal for it to be valid. Starting to signal your voting intentions to the network after the first block makes it more likely to have "abstaining blocks" (blocks without a vote).

    Important: For the proposal to show up on Partyman, make sure you are running the latest version of Partyman. To do so, run git pull from inside the partyman folder.

Because the current on-chain voting system only allows for one proposal to be voted on at the same time, you can expect the next proposal (Decentralized Treasury Model proposal) to go live with its discussion phase shortly after this proposal's voting period starts. That'll allow both proposal's votes to be quickly voted on, one after the other, so that we can move forward as fast as possible with the coming hardfork.

With the week coming to an end, we’ve prepared a new Particl V3 progress update we’d like to share with you. It highlights all the progress made over Particl V3 and indicates what the items that are going to be focused on next week and beyond are.

Note that, primarily due to the focus on fixing minor issues around the new testnet build as well as its prepping and release, there's not as much this time around compared to previous weeks. On Friday the 21st of May, 2020, the first-ever Particl CCS proposal to require on-chain voting was officially approved by Particl stakeholders with an overwhelming majority and participation rate! This marks a significant milestone for the Particl ecosystem as it moves towards a more community-powered form of governance.

Let’s break down the numbers in more detail and go over this proposal’s implications.

The Results Are In!

Voting for the Delegated Output Claim Management proposal was a significant event for the Particl project. It was the first time a CCS proposal required to be approved through a vote and, for this reason, served as a great showcase and test of Particl’s on-chain voting technology.

We are happy to report that the proposal was approved by Particl stakeholders, scoring a mindblowing 99.97% approval rate (minimum required is 60%) and a 63.17% participation rate (minimum required is 20%). Indeed, the vote lasted for 5,040 blocks, with 3,184 of them voting in favor of the proposal and just one block voting against it.

What About the Claim Process Now?

With the proposal officially approved by Particl stakeholders, now’s the time to get moving! As such, we can now announce that the claim period will begin tomorrow. To help you understand the output claim process and its timeline, we will publish, tomorrow, a blog post on Particl News containing all the necessary information to submit your outputs and get them validated so that they can be re-enabled after the upcoming hardfork.

It’s important to be aware that the output claim process will be separated into two phases; the pre-fork and post-fork phases.

If you submit your outputs for validation before the upcoming hardfork and the cutoff date, then you’ll be part of the pre-fork phase and will be able to use your currently disabled coins once the hardfork goes live. This, of course, implies that your claim gets approved.

Keep in mind that, because builds need to be ready days or even weeks in advance before the hardfork (because of the pre-notice required from exchanges), the actual cutoff/deadline date to submit outputs and be part of the pre-fork phase is actually going to be several days or weeks before the hardfork. We will clearly communicate this deadline before its time.

If you submit your outputs after the upcoming hardfork, then you’ll be part of the post-fork phase. You’ll still qualify to get your outputs re-enabled, but you’ll have to wait for the next hardfork to come, which is, at the current time, not scheduled.

For this reason, we strongly recommend submitting your outputs as fast as you can.

Headed Towards Community Governance

It is safe to say that this on-chain voting exercise, the first of its kind on the Particl network, was a resounding success. It highlights just how active Particl stakeholders are and how willing they are to actively participate in the governance of the project.

With this highly encouraging participation rate in mind, you can expect more proposals requiring a vote to be published on the CCS in the weeks, months, and years to come. Some of them may come from the Particl team itself, but anyone can submit a proposal of their own and request a vote for it.

On that end, the Particl team would like to reiterate its position that it fully supports and encourages quality community initiatives. It is by having a good mix of team and community proposals, as well as a significant diversity in the ideas proposed on the CCS, that Particl will achieve optimal levels of decentralization!

Second Proposal Voting to Begin This Week

The Delegated Output Claim Management proposal is only the first proposal to require on-chain voting of many to come. As such, a second proposal, the Decentralized Treasury Model proposal, will begin its voting phase at the end of this week.

Keep an eye on Particl News as we will publish, later today, a blog post explaining in detail the timeline for this proposal and its voting phase. If you still have questions, comments, or general feedback about it, please leave a comment on its Github page before it gets merged into the voting phase.

On Saturday the 12th of June, 2021, the Decentralized Treasury Proposal was officially approved by Particl stakeholders with yet another impressive approval rate of 96.6%. This marks a significant moment in Particl history as the end result is a new, more powerful self-funding mechanism for the ecosystem.

Let’s break down the numbers in more detail and go through the timeline for the coming weeks as the new decentralized treasury makes its way on mainnet.

The Results Are In!

The Decentralized Treasury Proposal vote, the first-ever “protocol consensus changing vote”, was an important milestone for Particl because it proposed applying critical changes to the protocol. Indeed, the proposal suggested raising the yearly PART coin emission rate from 2% to 8%, with half of the staking rewards being automatically deposited into a treasury fund by the protocol.

We are happy to report that the proposal was approved by Particl stakeholders, scoring a mind-blowing 96.6% approval rate (minimum required was 75%) and a 70.6% participation rate (minimum required was 20%). The vote lasted for 10,080 blocks, with 6,884 of them voting in favor of the proposal and 239 voting against it.

The participation rate for this voting round increased by ~7% compared to the previous (and first) proposal that required a vote. This is an incredibly encouraging news in light of Particl’s transition into a community governed project and shows just how active its stakeholders are.

When Will it Go Live?

Now that the results are official and that the decentralized treasury model has been approved, it can now be deployed on the Particl blockchain. For this to happen requires a hardfork which relies on two deliverables.

The first one is, obviously, the integration of the decentralized treasury code into the blockchain. The code for the changes has been completed and the build is now going through a thorough testing process on a side network (Particl clone network).

The second deliverable is the integration of the output whitelist into the blockchain. This is tied to the output claim process which is currently ongoing. As a reminder, the pre-fork process ends on June 21st, 2021. If you want your temporarily disabled anon and blind outputs to be re-enabled in the coming hardfork, make sure you’ve read read this blog post and submit your claim before that date, if needed.

Once the cutoff date of the claim period is reached, the final pre-fork output whitelist will be bundled with the next Particl Core release and be submitted to exchanges so they can start the process of preparing for the coming hardfork.

If all goes well, Particl should be forking on the 12th of July, 2021. This is currently a target, the actual hardfork may happen a bit before or after, depending on how fast exchanges and partners get ready for the fork. As always, we will keep you updated with any news on the regard.

The Team Funding Proposal Goes Live Early This Week

Putting in place a decentralized treasury model was only a first step in funding back the current Particl team. The second step is another proposal that will request capital from the treasury fund to fund the team and its operations. This proposal isn’t unlike what anyone else in the community can bring forward, but it’ll be Particl’s first-ever proposal to request resources from the treasury fund.

The proposal will detail the team’s strategy moving forward and will explain how it intends on utilizing the funds it is claiming. The proposal will be published and begin its discussion phase in the early moments of the week, on the CCS platform. Make sure to be around if you want to provide comments and feedback on the team proposal!

Now’s the Best Time to Get Involved

Now that the decentralized treasury model is about to go live on mainnet, you can prepare your proposals and get them ready to be published. If, in the past, you’ve had projects or ideas for Particl but couldn’t get the required capital to start them up, you now possess all you need to overcome that hurdle.

Because every submitted proposal first requires a discussion phase, and then a voting phase of a minimum of one week, don’t hesitate to let the community about your idea as soon as possible. This would ensure that the ecosystem and treasury fund get used right from the start and that no time is wasted before this new addition to the protocol starts benefiting the project.

The entire Particl team is very excited about the new decentralized treasury model and can’t wait to see what you all come up with in terms of initiatives, projects, businesses, and services. Particl now possesses the tools and resources to make anything happen; the sky is now the limit. It is now up to each and every one of us, the Particl community members, to make Particl a resounding success. So LFG!

With the week coming to an end, we’ve prepared a new Particl V3 progress report we’d like to share with you. It highlights all the progress made over Particl V3 and indicates what the items that are going to be focused on next week and beyond are.

This week, the main focus has been on resolving the stealth address issue, which also has implications on the OMP Library. Although the issue hasn't been fully resolved yet, progress has been made in reducing the number of stealth addresses generated when using Particl Marketplace.

Particl Desktop has also been tested extensively with the new Particl Core version (0.19.2.12) which is compatible with the coming hardfork. No issue or odd behavior has been observed.

The time has come for yet another weekly development report. This week has been one filled with progress, with solutions found and applied to all outstanding issues related to Particl V3.

However, to ensure that the fixes work as intended, and before officially marking them as fully resolved, we've decided to go ahead with one more round of community testing that should begin within the next few days. That'll also allow the team to monitor an interim solution that's been applied to the tricky ZMQ issue (more details further below).

This coming testnet round will be a public one, and we'll be putting extra focus on testing the applied fixes with the specific people who've initially reported them to ensure they're fixed on their environment. If no new problem arises, Particl V3 will then be ready for its mainnet release.

Particl has development reports bereft of information but replete with sentences that are trimmed of meaning. I read a couple of them and it was similar to sleazy goo that is observed on a two-day chicken left out of fridge. Something is upgrading and something is getting fixed but what exactly, is not known. It is a subject for a debate I do not want to participate in.

The time has come for yet another weekly development progress report. Although we didn't get a new Particl V3 testnet build this week, we've got a great update to communicate.

The star of the show this week is the ZMQ issue. Last week, we announced an interim solution that would allow us to release Particl V3 on mainnet with minimal compromise. In a last ditch effort to fix the issue before the next testnet round, core developer Tecnovert joined forces with desktop developer Arnold Bansemer to find a permanent solution. We are very happy to announce that the long-standing ZMQ issue is now permanently fixed with a unified solution across all operating systems! An interim solution is not needed anymore.

The time has come for yet another weekly development progress report and a little bird tells us you're going to like this one!

This week, most of the effort has been on finalizing the integration of the cold staking zap functionality into Particl Desktop. This was the last remaining item before a new Particl V3 testnet build can be released, and we're happy to say that it has been successfully completed!

That means we've initiated the process of building the new testnet version and will be releasing it publicly in the next 72 hours.

Build and Release the New Testnet Client

All that remains at this point is to build the new testnet version, test it internally, and then release it for one more round of public testing. All the issues highlighted in the progress reports dating from the last testnet client up until now have been resolved. One more time, we're asking for your help in testing the new client and trying to find any potential issue.

More specifically, here are our current areas of interest in regards to this specific testnet round.

    Test and verify that any previously mentioned issue is effectively resolved.
    Test the disabling of cold staking from the module and determine whether a previous issue is still present or not. In the previous codebase ("Particl V2"), it used to cause problems in some rare cases, but we haven't been able to reproduce it yet on our end. It may, or may not, still be present in Particl V3.

We are targeting the next 72 hours for the release of the new testnet version of Particl V3. So stay tuned for when the news drop on Particl News and the other usual communication channels.

As announced in our latest development progress report, all previously identified issues from the last testnet round have been resolved. As such, we have launched, this weekend, the fourth round of testing for Particl V3.

You can now download and test the most recent version of Particl V3, on testnet, and report back if you find any bug, issue, or odd behavior. Notably interesting is the new addition of the governance module on testnet, we encourage you to check it out!

If you encounter any problem while testing this new version of Particl V3 or have feedback to give, please add a "new issue" on Github (click here). Make sure to explain in detail the problem you’ve encountered, how to reproduce it, and the OS you’re using. The Particl developers will then pick it up and work on.

If no new major problem is found, this build will be ready to be released on mainnet. We will communicate more details as soon as we can!

On the Particl Core side of things, we are happy to report that testing has resumed on BasicSwap with the closed beta group and that a few changes have been made to the protocol. Much more details regarding BasicSwap coming right after the release of Particl V3 on mainnet.

We're also excited to tease you by announcing that a new lightwallet client to easily store and use PART will join the Particl ecosystem very soon. Indeed, we can report that, today, the first successful mainnet transaction using Particl Electrum has been made!

With the week coming to an end, it's time for another development progress report. This week has mainly been focused on prepping, building, testing, and uploading Particl V3 builds for mainnet release. Indeed, mainnet Particl V3 builds have been circulated to a small network of sellers who've pledged to populate the marketplace with listings prior to the release to ensure a smooth launch with various items to sell right from the very start.

Additionally, a lot of research and testing have gone into some of the new roadmap items that are coming shortly after the mainnet launch of Particl V3. Interestingly, a lot of these items are intrically related to the "listing seeding proposal", which has been fully funded a few weeks ago, and are getting a slightly preferential treatment as they allow the proposed system to be deployed faster.

As you know, we are awaiting Particl V3's mainnet release, which is now less than a week away from now, to reveal the new roadmap. So make sure to keep your eyes right on Particl News following the launch; things are only starting to get interesting and the best is definitely yet to come!

Particl Development Progress Report (01-10-2021)

The end of this glorious week has arrived, and with that comes the weekly development progress report. This week has been a pretty busy one, and so we have quite a lot to report.

First thing first, this week has seen the release of the long-anticipated Particl V3 on mainnet, which includes the new Particl Desktop client and Particl Marketplace. We're happy to report that the release has gone exceptionally smoothly without any significant issue. A few minor problems have been reported concerning getting listings to show up, but they can be quickly remediated with a few manual steps that we are working on fixing. The related changes to fix those minor issues should go live pretty soon.

Additionally, a good portion of this week's focus has been on observing the network following the release, keeping an eye on the chat rooms to spot any problem and assist people with difficulties, and also answering many questions from the community both in the chat rooms, but also in private messages.

However, it's not because a lot of the focus has been around monitoring the release that there hasn't been any significant progress development-wise. In fact, it is quite the contrary; this has been a pretty productive week. So let's dive deeper into the details.

Particl Desktop Development Report

A small number of minor updates have been added and queued up for the next release of Particl Desktop. Thanks to everyone who's provided feedback (and continue to do so) based on their experience with the initial Particl V3 release.

In addition, here are the items that have seen progress this week but aren't yet fully ready.

•    Update Particl Desktop and particl-market (marketplace codebase) to use Particl Core 0.21.
•    Allow users to obtain the mnemonic of the marketplace-related wallets for backup purposes.
•    A number of features related to better vendor inventory import/update, which includes the provision of a product code (allowing for updates to items via CSV amongst other things), the ability to update pricing via the batch publish window, and the ability to import images through the CSV file directly (with the possibility to specify the category and target market directly from the CSV coming soon as well).
•    Usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace to allow for better, more customizable formatting.
•    Allowing for the sale of digital items with no need for a shipping address to be provided (i.e., download links, NFTs, user codes, etc.).

Particl V3 – The Foundation of Particl's entire ecosystem

The release of Particl V3 on mainnet represents a major milestone for the project. Indeed, Particl V3 is the new, more modern foundation on top of which the future of the Particl ecosystem will be built. Because the scope of this essential update was so massive, it took a long time to get ready but was a necessary step in the evolution of the project.

Indeed, Particl V3’s modular approach makes it easier and more efficient to use apps like Particl Marketplace. Still, many of its improvements are back-end functionalities and necessary improvements to the quality of the code. Particl Development Progress Report (08-10-2021)

With the week coming to an end, the time has come for another weekly development progress report!

This week, we revealed the new, massive roadmap that will guide the development team through the next few months. And we are happy to report that there is already one item that is expected to be completed before the end of the weekend; displaying the mnemonics of market-related wallets and identities. This feature, which a few community members requested, is accompanied back-end improvements related to user identities, setting the stage for a broader use of identities in the future (i.e., reputation system).

Particl Desktop Development Report

The development related to Particl Desktop is generally similar to last week.

• Update Particl Desktop and particl-market (marketplace codebase) to use Particl Core 0.21. This is a recurring task that needs to be taken care of for all major releases of Particl Core, but 0.21 introduces some specific changes that require particular attention in relation to the marketplace.
• Allow users to obtain the mnemonic of the marketplace-related wallets for backup purposes. This is a roadmap item and is expected to be completed before the end of the weekend. Note that this item turned out to be a bit more complex than initially anticipated. As a result, some back-end changes were required to the profile and identity system, which will come in handy later down the road.
• A number of features related to better vendor inventory import/update, which includes the provision of a product code (allowing for updates to items via CSV amongst other things), the ability to update pricing via the batch publish window, and the ability to import images through the CSV file directly (with the possibility to specify the category and target market directly from the CSV coming soon as well).
• Usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace to allow for better, more customizable formatting.
• Enable the sale of digital items with no physical shipping address requirement (i.e., download links, NFTs, user codes, etc.).

Particl Core Development Report

This week on Particl Core, an update to the SMSG code has been made, allowing for the funding of more SMSG messages per transaction. This intends to streamline the process of publishing large numbers of listings at once on the marketplace.

Also related to publishing large numbers of listings at once, an update has been made here to Particl Core to fix an issue that prevented sellers, in some cases, to list a large number of listings at once (26+). These updates are all part of the team's post-v3 release assessment and efforts to fix immediate problems...

Putting Marketing in Context

First thing first, it’s essential to define what we mean by “marketing” to avoid any confusion. Marketing is an umbrella term that touches on brand awareness, PR, product placement, outreach, relationship building, and any other effort to gain adoption and new users or fans. It’s a wide range of actions converging towards making Particl more known, liked, and used.


Why do Marketing?

In the case of Particl, marketing has two clear objectives.

    Gain new users for Particl products (i.e., Particl Marketplace or BasicSwap)
    Increase the number of coin holders and project advocates.

For marketing to have any real impact on the course of the project, results need to be long-lasting. Any new user, coin holder, or advocate gained from any marketing campaign has to stick around for some time and be active within the ecosystem. When it comes to brand awareness campaigns, their message has to stick around and be clear.

This strategical and best value approach to marketing ensures that the project only spends resources towards effective initiatives rather than adopting a “spray and pray” strategy that can work for more prosperous projects, but at an extreme cost.

Why a New Website?

Particl is a mission-driven project with strong convictions. It is supported by incredibly talented developers who’ve built a unique and innovative decentralized platform that finally shifts the balance of power back into the hands of the people, not greedy corporations. The implications of that are huge and it has the potential to change a lot of aspects of our lives.

But somehow, the now-previous website didn’t fully do full justice to the project's mission and intentions. Although it detailed the project’s unique technical points (and they sure are impressive), it was easy for new, curious people to miss the bigger picture that ties everything together. That made it more challenging to turn these interested people into new users and fans of the project and limited the impact of any marketing, PR, or outreach effort.

That's why Particl needed a new website, especially now with the release of Particl V3 which pushes the project into a new phase where outreach will be more prevalent.

The Objectives Behind it

The website has been built with two simple but clear objectives in mind.

- Tell Particl’s story and its mission.

Building the website according to these two objectives ensures that the big picture becomes apparent and that people understand the purpose of the project, what it's working to achieve, and what they can get from it.

It’s what they use to make their first impression and decide whether they want to dig deeper or skip the project out of a lack of interest. And with so many projects to look at nowadays and the sheer number of distractions screaming for attention, you have to transmit your message as clearly and concisely as possible if you want people to stick around and be interested in digging deeper....

Particl Development Progress Report (05-11-2021)

With the week coming to an end, it's time for another progress report.

Before diving into the details, we'd like to mention that, as of last week, progress reports do not appear on the Particl News start page anymore. We've opted to create a specific section for it named "Progress" and available on the navigation bar at the top of this page. This reduces the bloat on the start page and makes it easier to follow the course of events that surround Particl. Follow the link here to get all the progress reports.

Now let's get to the interesting part!

Particl Desktop Development Progress

A good portion of the week has been spent on improving SMSG messages propagation and handling from Particl Desktop to fix an outstanding issue that caused problems for some users. A change was made to the marketplace handling of the response from core regarding sent messages; instead of failing only when a specific failure case is met, it should now fail for everything unless it meets specific success criteria. Although the fix still requires more testing, it's likely that the issue is fixed by now. A few other reported issues are being looked into, as is usual.

Aside from that, progress has continued over the previously-stated items, gradually leading up to the Particl Desktop 3.1 version.

• Several features related to better vendor inventory import/update. This includes the provision of a product code (allowing for updates to items via CSV amongst other things), the ability to update pricing via the batch publish window, and the ability to import images through the CSV file directly (with the possibility to specify the category and target market directly from the CSV coming soon as well). This task has been marked with notable progress this week.
• The usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace for better, more customizable formatting. This task has already been started but has been put on pause until the above items are completed. It is estimated that this item will be completed very quickly once its development resumes.
  
• Enable the sale of digital items with no physical shipping address requirement (i.e., download links, NFTs, user codes, etc.). This task has not been started yet.

Particl Core and Other Development Progress

This week on the Core side of things, a lot of merges and updates have gone into Particl Core and the SMSG network. Notably, some investigation and work have gone towards looking into reducing marketplace listing fees, which should go into effect in a future hardfork. As always, you can track Particl Core developments by checking out the Github repository.

Additionally, BasicSwap has received a lot of focus this week with breakthrough achievements being reached. Stay tuned for more details soon!

Marketplace Listing Seeding Proposal

Finally, there have been a few questions regarding the fully-funded Listing Seeding Proposal and its development status. We can confirm that the proposal is indeed under development at this present time, but as mentioned in the proposal, it is being done mostly outside of Particl's regular work scope. It's also being developed in a private capacity.

Since publishing the proposal, several iterations have been explored and the project has evolved into a more important undertaking. While we do not want to confirm any final structure at this moment, we are working towards making the system more open ended-instead of limited to the members who initially published the proposal.

Indeed, we are heavily considering making the "listing seeding system" usable by any community member looking to populate the marketplace with listings and manage them from a web interface.

As a final note on this subject, it's important to be aware that this proposal is now dependent on a few upcoming items, notably the SMSG Controller roadmap item. Additionally, while not a hard requirement, it would highly benefit from SMSG 2.0 which, if you remember, is expected to dramatically increase the scalability of Particl apps and services.

Another week bites the dust! So, without further ado, the time for the weekly status report has come. This week has been a continuation of the work reported in the past few progress reports.

On the side of Particl Desktop, there's not much new stuff that stands out other than the previously mentioned items seeing some progress. As usual, a few minor bugs and improvements, as reported by community members, have been fixed and will be included in the next version of Particl Desktop (3.1). Thanks to all of our dedicated community members that are still reporting issues and making suggestions to this day; it's incredibly useful and has a big impact on the quality of the product!

Particl Desktop Development Progress

Here's a short list of the current items being worked on or planned on being worked on in the short term.

Please note that these items are part of the immediate priority the team has set up following the release of Particl V3 on mainnet. They are meant to support the mainnet release by making its foundation better. While they may appear minor, they are vital to different types of users and will go a long way in making Particl Marketplace more usable in the immediate.

Any new major feature or function is planned for Particl Desktop 3.2 and subsequent versions.

 - Several features related to better vendor inventory import/update. We can report that the ability to batch update prices to multiple listings at once is mostly completed, with only UI tweaks and additional testing being required. The addition of a product code and the ability to import images directly through the CSV file directly is still in progress and is expected to be wrapped up next week, if all goes well.
 - The usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace for better, more customizable formatting. This task has already been started but has been put on pause until the above items are completed. It is estimated that this item will be completed very quickly once its development resumes.
 - Enable the sale of digital items with no physical shipping address requirement (i.e., download links, NFTs, user codes, etc.). This task has not been started yet.

Particl Core Development Progress

Particl's core developer, Tecnovert, has spent the vast majority of the week testing the upcoming BasicSwap DEX and fixing various small issues. We are happy to report that the protocol is now pretty stable but still requires testing as the upcoming open beta will be over mainnet (meaning you'll be able to swap "real coins"). That's why it needs to be as secure as possible and cater to any potential weird case.

On that note, the GUI for the open beta is currently under work and will be moved as a top priority starting on Monday next week. Please keep in mind that the GUI for the open beta is not at all how we intend it to be on the date of the official release; it's merely so that you can test the bare protocol is a more user-friendly way.

We've mentioned it in the past, but it's worth repeating; we've got many surprises planned for BasicSwap and have a big strategic vision for it. While we haven't released too much information about it, or on how we plan on leveraging it to make Particl go viral, but we do not want to play our cards too early for many reasons.

As we make solid progress on the upcoming DEX every week and check more and more items off of its to-do list, we near its official announcement and the reveal of much key information regarding it. We can't wait to share those with you and we're absolutely thrilled with the direction it's taking. Stay tuned for more information, it's coming shortly!

It's Friday once again, and the time has come for our weekly development progress report. This week, we've got some exciting new feature to announce which is going to be part of the upcoming Particl Desktop update (3.1). And nobody expected it this soon! 😉

Indeed, Particl Desktop developer Arnold Bansemer initially started the week focusing on adding alternative delivery methods for digital items. Upon looking at the code, he stumbled onto something interesting.

If you recall correctly, one of the current roadmap items is the ability to adjust the value of the escrow security deposit. It is also one of the top requests we've received both from vendors and non-vendors following the release of Particl V3 on mainnet. As it turns out, due to the new, improved codebase introduced by Particl V3, adding this feature ended up being a relatively easy and quick task to do.

As a result, we are happy to confirm that the "adjustable escrow" roadmap item is now complete and merged into the Particl Desktop code, meaning that it'll be activated on the very next update (3.1).

At this time, custom ratios (0% to 100% of the value of the item being purchased) can only be decided by the seller at the time of creating a listing. To ensure unaware users aren't met with bad surprises, any listing containing custom ratios will clearly indicate it, and buyers will be forced to manually check a box confirming that they are aware of the custom ratios before checking out their cart.

The addition of a product code and the ability to import images directly through the CSV file directly is still in progress, however, we're now moving these two tasks for AFTER the completion of the enabling of digital items. Both of these items are relatively easy to wrap up and we'd rather focus on the more complicated task first.
 - Enable the sale of digital items with no physical shipping address requirement (i.e., download links, NFTs, user codes, etc.). This task has been started this week and will be the primary focus for next week.
 - The usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace for better, more customizable formatting. This task has already been started but has been put on pause until the above items are completed. It is estimated that this item will be completed very quickly once its development resumes.

Particl Core Progress Report

This week on Core, work has gone towards keeping Particl Core up-to-date with Bitcoin's codebase. As always, you can track the progress by looking into the list of commits on the Github repository. It provides valuable insights into what's being done on that side of things.

In many ways, the ultimate vision of the platform can be compared as a sort of “decentralized and private WeChat-like ecosystem” where you can get all the key services or products you need right at your fingertips. Alternatively, you can also see it as an OS-like platform for distributed apps. In any case, Particl is an ecosystem of distributed apps, or “dapps”, where independence from any third-party or service provider is absolute. And BasicSwap is an incredibly important step towards that vision.

In fact, as the Particl ecosystem enables you to become truly financially independent, it’s easy to understand how an equally independent, resilient, and unstoppable way to buy and sell the platform’s native currency (PART) is required. However, at the time of this writing, PART is only available through centralized exchanges or by unprotected OTC deals between two people. While centralized exchanges (i.e., Bittrex, WizardSwap) can provide many benefits and unique features, not having any decentralized option is not an option for a platform that seeks to be uncompromisingly independent. But that’s all about to change!

Now let’s dive deeper into BasicSwap and let’s see how it’s going to become a cornerstone for the entire Particl ecosystem. We'll also detail how it will become a competitive and vibrant trading platform for all cryptocurrencies that end up on it.
The BasicSwap DEX Explained

Keeping in mind that the Particl ecosystem is your gateway into a completely independent and autonomous economy, it’s vital to be able to acquire (and sell or trade) the platform’s native currency in an equally independent, safe, fast, and decentralized way. That’s precisely what the BasicSwap DEX enables you to do, but it doesn’t stop at just buying and selling PART.

BasicSwap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) protocol. It lets you swap one cryptocurrency for another from a different chain (cross-chain). It’s also private by nature.

Swaps are made directly person-to-person, without any intermediary, using a distributed order book. Every single aspect of the BasicSwap protocol is decentralized and open-source, so you don’t have to take our word for it; you can check the code yourself!

List of Compatible Coins

    Bitcoin
    Monero
    Particl
    Litecoin
    Namecoin

We are looking at adding various coins, including ETH and its ERC-20 tokens, shortly after the release of the Open Beta. Any Bitcoin-based and Segwit enabled cryptocurrency can get integrated with minimal effort. Other token issuing blockchains like Fantom, Solana, Avalanche, Polygon, or Binance Smart Chain may become available on BasicSwap as well, at a later stage of the integration roadmap.
Key Features

BasicSwap is a one-of-its-kind DEX in the blockchain industry. While it offers many benefits against centralized exchanges, it has three main distinguishing features that set it apart from other decentralized exchanges.
Distributed Order Books

BasicSwap’s first version will focus on trading with an order book. Instead of swapping your coins into a liquidity pool (like on Uniswap, SushiSwap, or PancakeSwap), you can either place an order on the distributed order book (maker), at the price that you want, or take an order that has already been placed on there by other swappers (taker). In many ways, this makes BasicSwap more akin to the typical centralized exchanges most people are used to trading on, but with a totally decentralized and private twist.

Note that, unlike the vast majority of DEXs that offer order books, BasicSwap’s order book system is truly distributed and doesn’t introduce any form of centralization. No funny business here; BasicSwap makes it truly impossible, by design, for any third-party to have uncalled influence on the platform, and that's provably verifiable through code! The order book is powered by Particl’s own P2P network, SMSG network, which is the same network that powers Particl Marketplace.

The main benefit of having an order book system is that you can swap coins at the exact price that you want to swap them for. It also attracts more traditional market makers who may not want to provide liquidity to smart-contract based liquidity pools due to the risks of rug pulls and other theoretical exploits they carry.

But there’s more coming to BasicSwap! You can expect “quick swaps” to be deployed at some point in the future. As a matter of fact, this is already being looked into at the time of this writing! We will let you know more about it as soon (™) as we can!

True Cross-Chain Swaps

Particl’s upcoming DEXs is a true cross-chain trading exchange. Unlike other DEX, BasicSwap does not mimic cross-chain interoperability. You’ll exchange one native coin for another one without any unsafe trickery!

You can swap one coin (i.e., Bitcoin) for one from another blockchain (i.e., Monero). And no, we’re not just talking about swapping coins between different Ethereum forks here (i.e., ETH to BSC). Moreover, BasicSwap doesn’t require coins to be wrapped into tokens of another chain (often Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, or other similar chains).
The World’s Most Private Trading Exchange

To top it off, BasicSwap is inherently private. But what does that mean?! Well, it means a few things. For one, you won’t need to create an account, send documents, verify yourself, or limit your trading activities to arbitrary maximum daily restrictions. It’s open to all, without any restriction, and without any care about who you are or where you live.

That’s already a major improvement over centralized exchanges that have become way too curious, but you can take things even further! You can indeed massively increase your level of privacy by swapping any cryptocurrency for privacy coins like Particl or Monero, or by using them as a gateway to add a layer of privacy between two "public coins" (i.e,. Bitcoin and Litecoin).

Indeed, all Monero transactions are inherently private, and BasicSwap lets you swap PART using any of its privacy states; public, blind (ConfidentialTransactions), or anon (RingCT). We’re planning on eventually enabling more private swap options through other privacy coins as well (i.e., Firo, Veil, etc).

But there is STILL more to come in regards to privacy! As we move forward and deploy the Taproot protocol on Particl, you can expect swaps of Bitcoin-style currencies to become indistinguishable from regular transactions. In other words, it will be eventually near-impossible to tell that, for example, a Bitcoin to Particl swap has occurred just by looking at their respective blockchains. That’s a major win for your financial privacy!

Indeed, enabling Taproot support is planned for a later stage of the Open Beta. That's one of the reasons why Particl's blockchain is always kept up-to-date with Bitcoin’s latest releases. It brings battle-hardened and reliable functionalities for your day-to-day financial sovereignty!

The combination of all these privacy-related features will make BasicSwap the world’s most private and unrestricted trading exchange, and that, in turn, will make you completely financially independent. Claim your sovereignty and live free...because, well, now you can!

What About Monetization?

As BasicSwap is entirely decentralized, no single party can earn profits from swaps made on the platform. That’d be very...centralized! But rest assured, we absolutely intend on turning Particl’s upcoming DEX into the spark that will cause the Particl project to go viral. Indeed, we are strongly confident that the DEX was the missing piece all along.

Indeed, it’s likely that a very small and competitive fee will be charged for using the DEX. But instead of having a third-party collecting them, it’s the entire Particl community who will benefit from them. All fees paid for using the DEX will be either converted into PART and burned, redistributed to stakers, or used as a liquidity incentive. A combination of these three strategies is likely to be what’s going to be deployed, although we haven’t finalized the strategy just yet and are still experimenting with different approaches.

In other words, we are working towards building BasicSwap in such a way that, as more people swap coins on the platform, the more demand there will be for the PART coin, the less available supply there will be, and the more valuable your staking rewards will be. And that’s just one application out of many others on the Particl ecosystem (Particl Marketplace has a similar dynamic as well).

Keep in mind that we want BasicSwap to provide an experience that has as little friction as possible. We also want any fee charged to remain very competitive with industry standards and, obviously, legally viable.
How Does it Compare

We know we know, there are many exchanges around, both centralized and decentralized. But we’re very confident that BasicSwap stands on its own and offers something quite unique.

It's the end of the week and you know what it means; it's time for our weekly development progress report! This week has been one where we've focused on fixing a tricky issue with Particl Marketplace and have been exploring how best to release Particl Desktop 3.1.

Indeed, an issue was brought to our attention in which some listing messages are not being received by some markets. The problem seems to be related to two separate issues, but both can occur at the same time. Out of these two issues, one is already fixed but we are still busy investigating the second one especially as it seems to deal with the way the marketplace validates the incoming listing messages and, for some reason, appears to be working on some machines correctly but not on others. This makes tracking, and more importantly, testing the problematic code a little trickier than expected. We are looking into this and should have it fixed fairly soon.

As far as the progression regarding the delivery of digital items goes, there's been a number of stumbling blocks in getting this working properly. Indeed, it now appears that it will require significantly more time than expected since it touches on many more components of both Particl Desktop and the marketplace back-end code.

In other words, we cannot currently give any estimation yet on when this might be ready and, for this reason, we've begun exploring releasing Particl Desktop 3.1 without that feature. In fact, we do not want to drag the release of Particl Desktop 3.1 for too long. After releasing Particl V3 on mainnet, we've opted to go ahead with more frequent releases and we intend on sticking to that commitment.

That being said, even without digital items delivery being included in the next Particl Desktop update, we'll see the introduction of a few new features as well as a large number of bug/issue fixes and general improvements. Among them, we can count on the addition of a seller-adjustable escrow ratio and various important seller-focused improvements, notably many new options for importing inventories and editing, in bulk, listing prices. The vast majority of these additions have been suggested by Particl Marketplace sellers themselves and should fix some of the most obvious pain points for them.

As we are giving a final look at what is still required to add the digital items delivery feature, we'll let you know, in next week's progress report, whether we've decided to release V3.1 with or without it.

    Enable the sale of digital items with no physical shipping address requirement (i.e., download links, crypto addresses for NFTs, user codes, etc.). This task is in progress but is proving to be much more time-consuming than initially expected. For this reason, we may de-prioritize this task in favour of the other two and release Particl Desktop 3.1 without it. We will be able to confirm if that is the case next week.
    Several features related to better vendor inventory import/update. We can report that the ability to batch update prices to multiple listings at once is now complete, but has received various bug fixes and improvements this week. The addition of a product code and the ability to import images directly through the CSV file is still in progress.
    The usage of markdown in product descriptions on the marketplace for better, more customizable formatting. This task has already been started but has been put on pause until the above items are completed. It is estimated that this item will be completed very quickly once its development resumes.

Particl Core and BasicSwap DEX Progress Report

This week on the Core side of things, a lot of testing has gone towards activating Taproot on Particl. We are happy to report that, so far, it seems that everything works fine and as expected. For the more advanced users, you can consult this Github commit to check out and verify the code behind Particl's Taproot activation.

As mentioned in last week's progress report, although the Particl blockchain is currently Taproot-ready, this new groundbreaking feature requires a hardfork to be activated. At this time, it looks likely that we will include it in the next hardfork, which should go live early in 2022. We will let you know, well in advance, of all the details related to this hardfork in a blog post on Particl News.

    Note: If you still have any disabled RingCT or CT output, now's the time to submit your claim to the appropriate portal so that they can be enabled in the coming hardfork. Please have a look at this blog post to know precisely what is required from you in that regard.

Other than testing Taproot, a lot of work has gone towards improving BasicSwap's back-end code ahead of its Open Beta. As a reminder, we officially announced and revealed, last Friday, many details about Particl's upcoming cross-chain and private DEX. As mentioned in last week's progress report, although the Particl blockchain is currently Taproot-ready, this new groundbreaking feature requires a hardfork to be activated. At this time, it looks likely that we will include it in the next hardfork, which should go live early in 2022. Particl Development Progress Report (10-12-2021)

It's the end of the week. So see you all on Monday! Oh, right, it's time for our weekly development update first! 😅

This week, most of the focus has been on adding a few key improvements to the marketplace and desktop client after receiving various feedback from the community. While these fixes may seem mundane to some, they fix relatively encumbering issues that affect both buyers and sellers in different cases. A few examples of these improvements will be given in the Particl Desktop progress report section of this blog post.

Additionally, we mentioned last week that, due to the larger-than-expected scope of adding digital items delivery, we were evaluating whether we'd include that feature in Particl Desktop 3.1 or not. After looking at the situation, we've opted not to include it.

A big reason for this decision is that Particl Desktop 3.1 now includes a lot of important and quality-of-life fixes and improvements over the initial mainnet release of Particl V3. Delaying their release would be counter-productive and unnecessary. Indeed, some of these fixes are relatively critical for some users, and so we're prioritizing releasing Particl Desktop 3.1 faster so that these users can benefit from the fixes and gain back a better user experience.

With that in mind, we've started planning ahead for the release of Particl Desktop 3.1 on testnet. We're finalizing the last few remaining items planned for 3.1 and will then build a testnet client for community testing. We'll communicate more details on the testnet release in next week's progress report.
Particl Desktop Development Progress

In the intro of this progress report, we've mentioned that several improvements have been added to Particl Desktop, notably relating to Particl Marketplace.

For example, we've added a shortcut in the Send/Convert page to split a transaction into multiple outputs, which should make it more visible as well as easier to set on a transaction-per-transaction basis. This has been a much-requested improvement by some of our vendors as it previously caused them some issues, especially concerning the process of publishing listings.

Also, if something goes wrong during a transaction and one party does not receive an updated order status from the other party (which means their client didn't properly pick up the intended SMSG message), that other party can now simply press a button that's been added to the order flow which conveniently allows for their last action status to be rebroadcast. It was possible to do just that in the past, but it required commands to be entered manually in the console window; a less-than-ideal user experience. This isn't needed anymore and can be accomplished with the simple click of a button.

Similar to the item above, another button has been added. This one rescans SMSG messages (executes the smsgscanbuckets command) for you, so in the case where it might appear that an SMSG message was unproperly received, you can just click on that button so that your client tries to find and process the message. 

Another small change that was added is the display of a count of new listings that are not yet displayed in the market browser. Previously, an alert indicator would be displayed over the refresh button; this is still there but now a count of how many new items have been received is also displayed near the refresh button.

Aside from these, a variety of bug fixes and general improvements have been added, as is usual, making this week one that ended up being quite productive and helpful in improving the general user experience.

With all of that being said, here's the list of remaining items to be included in Particl Desktop 3.1.

Keeping the listed items above in mind, we will be starting the process of building and releasing Particl Desktop 3.1 on testnet very soon.

As always, we'd rather not give a precise date or estimate for its release, but we hope to begin the process towards the end of next week. We'll give you more accurate details on this in next week's progress report.

Particl Core and BasicSwap Progress Report

This week, Particl's Core Developer, Tecnovert, has focused mostly on Particl Core and on preparing the upcoming hardfork.

Notable in the changelog for Particl Core 0.21.2.5 is the fact that the upcoming hardfork has now been scheduled. Indeed, on the 1st of February 2022 at 17:00 UTC, the Particl blockchain will hardfork and include a variety of new features, including Taproot activation.

We'll make a formal announcement on the hardfork next week and will include in it all the necessary details about it. We'll also publish in that blog post a complete list of the new features and changes it will introduce.

Please note that, if you still have disabled outputs as a result of the emergency hardfork that happened earlier this year, you will need to submit your claim to have them re-activated before the hardfork. Failure to do so means you'll need to wait for the next, subsequent hardfork to have your outputs re-activated. To learn more about how to submit your claim, please refer to this blog post.

Aside from that, there have been some minor improvements made to BasicSwap's underlying protocol, notably around its UI and the use of RingCT/CT swaps. We are still working towards launching the Open Beta soon and will give more detailed information on this as soon as we can.

Team Funding Request #2 Results

On Sunday, the 30th of January, 2022, the second team funding request has been officially approved by Particl stakeholders with an impressive approval rate of 99.36%! This marks an important milestone for the project as this funds the team to develop, promote, and expand the Particl ecosystem for a duration of 6 more months, after which the team will submit a renewed funding request.
The Results Are In!

The Team Funding Request #2 proposed attributing funds from the network's decentralized Treasury Fund to the Particl team to support the development, promotion, and expansion of the Particl ecosystem. The proposal requested 35,250 PART per month from the treasury for 6 months, after which a new funding request will need to be pushed by the team and approved by stakeholders.

We are happy to report that Particl stakeholders have approved this proposal with an outstanding 99.36% approval rate (minimum required was 60%) and a 68.61% participation rate (minimum required was 20%). The vote lasted for 5,040 blocks, with 3,436 of them voting in favor of the proposal and 22 voting against it.

Particl Desktop Progress Update

With the Particl Desktop 3.1.1 update out, efforts on bringing new marketplace features will resume starting next week.

As such, the next planned feature for Particl Desktop 3.2 is the ability for sellers and buyers to communicate directly with each other straight from the platform and without having to resort to using different means of communications like email addresses or instant messaging. This messaging feature is powered by Particl's own SMSG network and is entirely decentralized and private.

We'll keep you up-to-date with its progress as part of these weekly development progress reports.

Particl Core and BasicSwap Progress Update

As for Particl Core, this week has been focused on beginning the integration of Particl into Blockbook—a feature-packed blockchain explorer that will provide many useful benefits to the project, notably related to the "web framework" that would allow Particl applications like Particl Marketplace to be used on the web.

Other than that, work has gone towards merging code (and cleaning it up) from Bitcoin's master branch. This is part of the ever-ongoing effort to keep Particl Core in sync with Bitcoin's latest version.

Opt-in or Opt-out Privacy, that's the Question!

Clarifying our stance on Particl's privacy setup and the reasons for it.

Every once in a while, the question of why PART, Particl’s native currency, isn’t anonymous by default comes up. As you can imagine, this topic can rapidly lead to fiery debates on the level of privacy certain protocol implementations offer and as to why a certain currency was designed the way it is.

We’d like, today, to clarify our position on this topic and detail why we’ve decided to follow this particular path.

    Note: In this article, we often refer to RingCT transactions as “anon transactions". These are used as synonyms.

About Particl’s Native Currency; PART

Before we get into the nitty-gritty details as to why PART uses an opt-in privacy setup rather than mandating all transactions to be private, it’s important to understand the context of PART's existence and know what is its purpose within the wider Particl ecosystem.

Taken at face value, PART is a proof-of-stake privacy coin that uses the same privacy protocol as Monero (RingCT) but uses the Bitcoin codebase instead of the more rigid Cryptonote one.

This difference in codebases makes a world of differences. Indeed, leveraging the Bitcoin codebase enables PART to benefit from the sheer strength of the entire Bitcoin ecosystem and developer community. That means more developers auditing and contributing to the code (Taproot, LN, etc), more stability, and more products and releases to benefit from (Copay, Electrum, etc). But perhaps more importantly, that also means much more flexibility.

And that’s where PART shines uniquely and really sets itself apart from other privacy coins. While it uses the proven-effective but typically rigid RingCT and CT protocols, it possesses all of Bitcoin's flexibility; massively expanding its utility as more than just a private currency.

This added flexibility makes it possible to use the coin in simple Bitcoin-style smart-contracts and multi-signature contracts. But don’t get fooled by the word “basic”, what can be done with “simple smart-contracts” is pretty astonishing in itself as demonstrated by distributed apps like Particl Marketplace (decentralized e-commerce) and the recent Taproot developments. More on that shortly.

What is PART’s Real Intended Purpose?

When we, the Particl team, first envisioned and designed the Particl project, we had a very clear mission in mind: building an ecosystem of distributed applications that respect your rights and freedoms. This is our primary focus and all further design decisions follow that guiding line.

We are building these applications for everyone—freedom seekers, the persecuted and censored, big and small online sellers, online shoppers, the “typical internet user”, and, among many other types of people, privacy enthusiasts too.

In that sense, building a privacy coin that only serves as a medium of exchange isn’t our objective. PART is a multi-purpose, privacy-focused currency that is more akin to a tool than only a currency. By design, it needs to be flexible enough to accomplish various functions within the Particl ecosystem, which is achieved by leveraging the benefits of the Bitcoin codebase.

It is with this need for both multi-purpose flexibility and privacy that we’ve designed PART’s privacy setup and why we’re confident that it’s doing exactly what we intended it to do in the first place.


What are Particl Distributed Apps

To give you a better idea of our vision, let's take one of the distributed applications of the Particl ecosystem. Particl Marketplace is a decentralized and private-by-default online marketplace that lets you buy and sell anything online with no restriction. Think of it like an eBay, but without any middleman, data mining, restriction, or sales fee/commission.

This marketplace is made possible thanks to many pieces fitting together: the flexibility of the Bitcoin smart-contracts, the use of a custom and unique P2P messaging layer (SMSG), the privacy benefits of the RingCT protocol, a distributed governance system, the anonymity of the Tor network, and the smart-contract capabilities of the Bitcoin-based CT protocol.

As PART itself directly powers some of these functions (i.e., content moderation), its multi-purpose nature becomes clearer. And as some of these functions cannot work using anon balances and transactions, the debate on whether we should mandate private transactions or not suddenly becomes more nuanced.

The Need for Public Balances

RingCT transactions are, by design, quite rigid as their outputs are not programmable. This prevents anon balances to be used in more complex scenarios, on various platforms, and for certain use-cases. To circumvent this limitation, Particl leverages both public (Bitcoin-like) and CT transactions. This “protocol flexibility” is one of the coin’s most important strengths and expands its utility beyond what it could be if it was working exclusively using RingCT.

What are Public Balances Used for?

At this time, here’s a list of some components of the Particl ecosystem that require public balances to function:

    The Particl Proof-of-Stake (PPoS) consensus mechanism, including cold staking and cold staking pools. There is, however, an option to receive all staking rewards using RingCT or CT transactions for those looking for that extra layer of privacy. To learn more about how to do this, please refer to this article.
    Particl's decentralized treasury which funds community initiatives.
    The community governance system which allows stakeholders to vote on important decisions with their stake weight.
    The Particl Marketplace community moderation system which lets the users moderate undesirable content off of the marketplace and fight off spam on the platform.
    The mobile wallet Particl Copay.
    The light wallet Particl Electrum (desktop and mobile) which is expected to power future mobile and web releases.
    Hardware devices such as the Ledger Nano S and the Trezor.

And, although Particl Marketplace’s two-party escrow system doesn’t rely on public transactions, it still requires CT transactions to link RingCT outputs together to provide its anonymity. You can read more on how this is done by checking out this article.

As you can see, many critical components of the Particl ecosystem entirely rely on public balances and transactions. Making PART private-by-default or outright mandating private transactions would cause a significant setback and even force the project to abandon some of its core components. This would go in direct opposition of our mission.

What About Exchanges?

Another downside associated with having a private-by-default cryptocurrency has to do with the ever-evolving legal landscape of the blockchain industry. As is becoming more evident by the day, regulations are tightening, notably around the use of “privacy coins”. As a result, a lot of leading exchanges have resorted to delisting and/or not entertaining adding privacy coins as a way to protect themselves and ensure that they remain compliant.

With Particl’s relatively precarious presence on exchanges, having the main transaction type be transparent is a definite upside.

And even though exchanges could, in theory, change the type of transactions they accept if Particl were to switch to a private-by-default model, they may not be inclined to do so purely based on the fact that PART itself has relatively low liquidity and volume. The effort involved with implementing that change at the exchange level, coupled with the legal uncertainty of accepting privacy coins, may simply not be worth it for exchanges. This could lead to a delisting and reduction of accessibility to the PART coin; something that cannot be neglected as the coin needs to be as accessible as possible for Particl to accomplish its mission.

Auditing the Circulating Supply

Everything in life has trade-offs. With cryptocurrencies that mandate private transactions like Monero, the added privacy is counter-balanced by the fact that the circulating supply cannot be properly audited with full certainty. And although the reasons that may cause supply inflation are usually considered more theoretical than practical, they are real risks nonetheless.

By having public balances on which people hold funds and stake from, you can determine, with more accuracy, whether or not the total number of coins in circulation is as expected. As the Monero team best wrote it: “(…) the use of transparent fund migration means that an attempt to move enough exploited funds through the transparent Zcash pool could be detected (…)”. On that note, we highly recommend reading Monero’s well-thought-out response on the topic of supply auditability, how it relates to private (“opaque”) cryptocurrencies, and the trade-offs involved with this.

In our particular case, supply auditability isn’t the main reason why we’ve opted against mandating private transactions, but it’s certainly an appreciable benefit.

Transaction Speed

One non-negligible benefit of having public balances is the faster speed of transaction settlements on Particl. While both public and anon transactions use block confirmation times of 2 minutes, public balances are usable after 1 confirmation (~2 minutes) while anon balances can only be used once the funds it contains have reached 12 confirmations (~24 minutes).

This speed is handy in many situations and straight up required in others, notably in the context of certain Particl applications where the public balance holds a key role (i.e., moderating marketplace content).
About PART’s Privacy

Although PART is a multi-purpose coin that accomplishes different functions within the ecosystem—and, as we’ve just seen, some of these functions cannot work over anon (RingCT) transactions—its privacy is still one of its most important selling points and development priorities.

When debating whether or not PART should be private-by-default, are we asking the right question? Is the entire debate misdirected?

At its most fundamental level, this debate seeks to find out whether or not PART’s current privacy capabilities are good enough to keep people anonymous. Whether or not PART mandates RingCT transactions or not is irrelevant as long as the user privacy is solid enough.

Is Particl private-by-default?

Let’s first clear this question out of the way. No, Particl isn’t “private-by-default”, but it is heavily focused on anonymity nonetheless.

Keep in mind, Particl’s mission is first and foremost to provide an ecosystem of applications that respect your rights. The race to the top for the absolute most private cryptocurrency in the space is not our primary focus and purpose. That being said, PART absolutely qualifies for a spot within the top privacy coins as we are just about to find out.

Keeping our mission in mind, PART is not dedicated exclusively to privacy maximalists but also to a much wider range of audiences that also include people that may not care as much about this specific aspect but more about others, like cutting off the middleman from their e-commerce operations, for example.

But is opt-in privacy, rather than mandated, an actual threat to the quality of that privacy? Let’s see how RingCT works in the first place so that we may be able to answer that question after.

How Does RingCT Work?

RingCT is a combination of the Confidential Transactions (CT) and Ring Signature privacy protocols. CT keeps transacting amounts private and ring signatures keep the identity of the participants private.

Whenever you make an anon transaction, the transacting anon outputs are pooled up with other anon outputs on the network (ring signatures). These other outputs pose as "fake transaction participants" and merely serve the role of being plausibly deniable decoys to hide amongst.

For an outside party looking into the transaction, it is theoretically not possible to tell, with certainty, which of the “participants” actually participated in the transaction, meaning that neither the value of the amount transferred nor its participants can be traced. And while academic and theoretical attack vectors do exist, as in every privacy protocol, RingCT has proven time and time again to be one of the most robust out there.

What Contributes to Greater Privacy?

To keep things simple, more anon transactions on the network mean more privacy, and that privacy gets even better when there’s a constant flow of new legitimate transactions being created. But let's break that down in more detail.

How private a transaction is, at the protocol level, mainly depends on two factors. On one end, the sender of an anon transaction can increase or decrease the level of its privacy by using a greater or lesser number of "ring signatures". More ring signatures means more decoys participating in a transaction and thus, in simple terms, greater expected privacy.

On the other end, the total number and diversity of these decoys matter greatly. Because RingCT's privacy is obtained by hiding among decoys, its effectiveness increases when there are more of them, and more of them coming from different sources, to pick from.

To understand this better, imagine that you are the sender of an anon transaction that contains 8 ring signatures. Out of these, 2 of them are real participants (the sender and the receiver) and 6 of them are decoys. If the identity of 4 of these decoys is known to an outside observer (i.e, an exchange, a blockchain tracing company, etc), that really only leaves you with 2 decoys to hide among, making it easier, in theory, for the real participants to be identified.

That's why having a large number of outputs and transactions on the network improves your privacy. It gives the protocol more decoys to work with, and more diverse ones, effectively reducing your chances of picking up compromised ones.

On the topic of the diversity in the source of these outputs, it is also very important as it reduces the chances of picking up decoys known to third-parties collecting data on large numbers of outputs from a single source (i.e., an exchange keeping tabs on all the Monero outputs of its users). Note that this becomes a much bigger problem if and when these parties start collaborating together and sharing their collected data with each other.
Opt-in Privacy and the Human Factor

At the protocol level, RingCT's privacy isn't directly affected by whether or not it is mandated or the default transaction type of the blockchain.

If, for example, Particl’s RingCT layer had a similar number of transactions per day as Monero, it would have a somewhat comparable level of privacy at the protocol level. But, in practice, it gets a bit more complicated because, as mentioned earlier in this article, everything has trade-offs.

In the case of opt-in privacy, the trade-off is the human factor. Having the ability to switch back and forth between public and anon balances opens the door to human errors and sub-optimal protocol usage. As with all cryptocurrencies, including private-by-default assets like Monero, there are some considerations and best practices to keep in mind to maintain a good level of privacy.

    Note: The risks typically associated with the human factor are mostly applicable to normal peer-to-peer anon transactions between two users. Using Particl applications, like the marketplace, significantly reduces the risk of human error by automatically applying some of the recommended best practices.

Leveraging Particl Applications to Boost Privacy

As previously mentioned, the Particl project is much, much more than just a cryptocurrency. It's an ecosystem of distributed apps that respect your rights, with one of these rights being the right to privacy. And that's precisely where lies Particl's mind-blowing privacy potential; in its apps!

To understand why that is, let’s take the Particl Marketplace app as an example once again. It lets you buy and sell anything online with no restriction. It is private by default, meaning that all payments for goods and services have to use RingCT. For sellers, there's the option to pay for their listing fees (listing an item for sale on the marketplace) using anon transactions.

And thus, each item listed on the marketplace generates at least one transaction, meaning that a seller who wants to list 100 items will generate 100 unique anon transactions alone plus two other anon transactions per sale (as both the buyer and the seller have to make an anon transaction to complete the escrow private smart-contract).

As is self-evident, simple usage of the Particl apps like the marketplace dramatically scales the number of real, "high-quality" anon transactions per day on the network up. To get an idea, simply think of how many e-commerce transactions happen every day on the web. How many items are listed online. Sure, that's an unfairly large segment to compare Particl to, but just think of how many transactions happen just within the still-very-niche decentralized marketplace segment (i.e., OpenSea).

As a reference, Monero does around a solid 16,000 transactions per day at the time of writing this piece. Could usage of Particl Marketplace general similar numbers? The jury is still out but one can speculate.

And the cherry on top? Particl Marketplace, and all future Particl applications like the upcoming BasicSwap DEX, is entirely decentralized and trustless. There's no central party able to collect any data about you, your anon outputs, or those of other participants on the network; a very unique advantage of Particl over other privacy coins.

In other words, using Particl applications not only increases the number of anon transactions and outputs on the network, but it also does so in a way that improves the quality and effectiveness of available decoys. As current and future Particl applications gain more adoption, so does the the level of on-chain privacy as well.

New Privacy Boons Abound

Particl is fortunate to be built on the Bitcoin codebase. Indeed, contrary to what many think, the Bitcoin codebase is evolving rapidly and is going through a particularly innovative phase. That is especially true of recent progress made on the Lightning Network and Taproot, both of which innovations are available on Particl and enhanced by an extra RingCT bridge for added anonymity.

Not mandating RingCT transactions gives us the ability to leverage and combine these breakthrough developments from the Bitcoin community to massively improve Particl's privacy and make its applications better for all.

Complex and Private LN-based Smart-Contracts
Indeed, recent developments have made it possible to run complex smart-contracts on the Lightning Network. These smart-contracts can even be deployed using CT to keep the amounts transferred confidential. This is a significant development for the Bitcoin community as it dramatically improves your privacy and opens the coin up to even more use-cases. But there is a small caveat; blinded smart-contracts don't hide the identities of people using them; only the transacted amounts remain confidential.

If that smart-contract was powering the escrow of some hypothetical marketplace, it could be possible to tell the identity of the seller and the buyer of a given transaction. On Particl, the additional layer of RingCT would keep both the buyer and the seller private by letting them enter and exit the Lightning Network without leaving a trace.

Taproot Scripts

With Taproot now being enabled on Particl, new on-chain scripting options have become available. Taproot enables more advanced, but also more private, complex transactions by combining multiple keys and signatures into one. With it, you can pre-emptively program payments within a group of people and trigger them following a set of pre-defined conditions. The resulting transactions look just like any other regular transaction on the blockchain and neither the conditions nor the identities of the participants are exposed.  

This opens a ton of opportunities, like for example entering and exiting the Lightning Network more privately, making Particl's treasury entirely decentralized, making BasicSwap DEX swaps with Bitcoin-based currencies look just like a normal transaction, or even making some core components of Particl quantum-proof. And that's just to name a few of the possibilites...

    Note: In both the cases of LN and Taproot, it's important to note that RingCT transactions are not directly merged with LN and taproot, but rather run upon entering and exiting the L2 network to break the history.

So, Should PART Become Private-by-Default?

Ultimately, there is no right or wrong answer to this debate. With both options, there are pros, cons, and trade-offs. There is no perfect solution; it all depends on the purpose of a specific cryptocurrency and the mission it’s trying to accomplish. However, we are highly confident that Particl's current privacy setup strikes the optimal utility/privacy balance for what it seeks to accomplish and for who it seeks to accomplish it for.

And although PART can be said to be less private than competing privacy coins such as Monero, an obvious statement considering the difference in the number of transactions between the two networks at this present time, its privacy potential is just as solid, if not even better, assuming decent usage of Particl's distributed applications and that best practices are followed by users.

PART's public addresses provide a lot of capabilities that are key to Particl's ecosystem and they cannot be readily dismissed. For this reason, and for the other reasons mentioned earlier in the blog post, the Particl team does not plan to switch to an exclusively private-by-default model of transactional privacy in the foreseeable future. We want to reiterate our strong confidence in our current model and are focusing on building applications that will organically raise the diversity and number of anon transactions and outputs on the network.

That being said, we remain open to adjusting our position on this matter in the future depending on how things evolve.

Particl Desktop Privacy Improvements on the Way!

The fact that we embrace an opt-in privacy setup doesn't mean we can't work towards reducing potential mistakes caused by the human factor.

As such, Particl Core contains a few improvements in the RingCT implementation that mitigate some of the risks introduced by the opt-in nature of PART's privacy setup.

Also, in the next few Particl Desktop updates, you can expect new privacy-focused UI additions and improvements that seek to reduce the risk of human errors to a minimum. For example, a simple "churning function" that automatically churns your anon outputs (generates privacy-enhancing transactions (send-to-self) and creates more noise to hide within) to improve your privacy and everyone else's as well. Stay tuned to our weekly development updates for more information.

Synergy and Collaboration, not Tribalism and Exclusion

Particl's purpose is to build an ecosystem of apps that respect your rights and is as inclusive as possible. The race to the top for the most private features on a cryptocurrency is something we keep in mind without prime focus, although we fully believe PART can eventually become as such once the adoption of the Particl platform grows.

As part of this vision, we are working on a cross-chain and private decentralized trading exchange (BasicSwap DEX) that lets you swap different cryptocurrencies without the use of any third-party.

That means you can easily enter and exit the Particl ecosystem using your favorite privacy coin such as Monero, for example, and enjoy the benefits of both chains at the same time.

By combining Monero's private-by-default currency-focused approach and Particl's app-focused vision, you can reach strong levels of privacy few people thought were possible. The trade-offs of using an opt-in privacy coin (Particl) can then be offset by using an opt-out one (Monero) on the platform, just like Monero can offset its trade-offs (lack of distributed apps and more rigidity) by bridging into the Particl ecosystem using BasicSwap. A win-win situation for both blockchains and a major victory for the people.

Once the DEX is integrated into Particl desktop client, Particl Desktop, the synergy it creates with other privacy coins will take the entire privacy enthusiast community to the next level. You'll be able to use distributed and private applications without making any security or privacy compromise and by using your favorite coin.

Indeed, synergy, not tribalism, is how we see the privacy coin space evolving to the direct benefit of the people. There are many different approaches to privacy and it’s difficult to say which one is the best because, in part, use-cases and target audiences differ so much. And so, why not combine different options and work in unison towards bringing more privacy to the average joe? That's what we set out to do with Particl, and what we'll keep giving our blood, sweat, and tears to day after day!

Particl Development Progress Report (18-03-2022)

With the week coming to an end, now's the time for our weekly progress report. This week has once again been a continuation of the various components being worked on with steady progress being made on all fronts.

Without further ado, let's jump right in!


Particl Desktop Progress Update

This week, the upcoming marketplace messaging system that allows buyers and sellers to message each other has been the sole focus. While progress may seem slow on that end, it is steady, and we can report that the main hurdles are likely now out of the way.

Next week, we'll be making some related changes to the marketplace codebase and putting more focus and emphasis on the UI component of this messaging system.

The in-market messaging layer is currently the main focus and the last remaining major item before we can go live with the release of Particl Desktop 3.2.


Particl Core and BasicSwap Progress Update

Particl's upcoming light wallet, Particl Electrum, is currently in its last testing phase. We can report that no major issue has been encountered so far since we've started this final round of testing; it's been smooth sailing, and that is an excellent indicator. Particl Electrum should be ready to be released next week!

As for BasicSwap, we are making outstanding progress both on its user interface and codebase. Indeed, we're currently improving various aspects of the codebase but, perhaps more interesting for this update, adding Tor functionality to it as well.

Indeed, once initially released, it will be possible to launch BasicSwap and route it either through "clearnet" or through Tor. Furthermore, this option is available right from within the installation process. That means you won't have to launch BasicSwap first to adjust this setting, allowing you to avoid deploying your node on either clearnet or Tor if you need to avoid doing so (i.e., in some countries, you may want to avoid simply connecting to the Tor network).

About the user interface, we fully intend on making it as user-friendly as possible so that most people can get started quickly and reap its benefits without needing to be an "advanced user". This is a common mistake with cross-chain DEXes that often leads to a lack of adoption. To that end, we are working on making the user interface expand on BasicSwap's core functions and bring the user experience to a level more similar to what you would expect from "traditional exchanges".

We'd also like to mention that, even though we are calling this upcoming launch an "open beta", the release will be fully functional and let you easily swap assets like Bitcoin, Monero, and Particl on their respective mainnet networks. Don't be fooled by the "beta" status of BasicSwap; we are calling it this way because we have a much broader vision for it going into the future. Its first beta release should already be smooth enough to become your go-to exchange.

Finally, we've also made good progress on bringing the Particl code up-to-date with Bitcoin's latest version (23.0), and we should have a release ready for it, with the new guix framework, quite soon. As always, this is an ever-ongoing task but still requires a fair amount of effort every week.

Particl Development Progress Report (25-03-2022)

Yet another week comes to pass, which means it's time for our weekly development progress report! This week, we've been trucking along the various components on our plate and have been making steady progress, bringing us closer to delivering on some major items.

Let's get into the details right away!

Particl Desktop Progress Update

We're happy to announce that we have finished up the marketplace-related code for the upcoming messaging system! What remains to be completed is the UI and the integration into Particl Desktop, which is currently the main focus.

In the coming week, we'll likely be finishing up the UI changes for the Orders-related messaging and then also work towards finishing up the UI for the listing-related messaging.

And so, with that in mind, it is safe to say that the more challenging parts of this significantly crucial new feature are now mostly done and behind us.

Additionally, we've been busy making minor fixes and improvements based on user feedback. As such, Particl Desktop 3.2 is expected to run much more smoothly and include a wide variety of improvements to the desktop client and the marketplace codebase. Again, thanks to all users taking the time to report bugs and feedback to the team; it is instrumental in making the product as good as possible!

    Note: As is usual for any major Particl release, Particl Desktop 3.2 will be released on testnet prior to going live on mainnet. This will make it possible for a larger pool of testers to play around with the new release and ensure that it remains stable under a wider range of environments.

Particl Core and BasicSwap Progress Update

This week on core, we've completed all development and testing for the upcoming light wallet Particl Electrum.

However, within the last 24 hours, an upstream update to one of the packages required to build the Windows client received an upstream update that broke the process. This made building the Windows client not possible until some point today where it was fixed by the Electrum team. With this issue now resolved, we will be able to launch the building process before the end of the day and release Particl Electrum once that is complete!

This is a great milestone for Particl because, as you may know by now, Electrum's back-end is intended to become a cornerstone of Particl's broader accessibility ambitions, notably by enabling Particl Marketplace and the BasicSwap DEX to be deployed on and accessed from the web.

In other words, using Particl Electrum as an end-user wallet is only scratching the surface of what it's intended to be.

Enable Cold Staking

Particl Electrum and Web Services

Particl Electrum is an easy-to-use and accessible light wallet that lets you send and receive PART, as well as manage wallets, without having to sync the entire blockchain.

Because it uses the SPV protocol first proposed by Satoshi Nakomoto in the Bitcoin whitepaper, all that needs to be downloaded are the block headers which are multiples of times smaller in size than the full blockchain. This is incredibly useful as an end-user wallet, but that is only scratching the surface of how Particl Electrum is intended to be used further down the road.

Indeed, Particl Electrum's back-end is poised to become a cornerstone of Particl's broader accessibility ambitions, notably by enabling applications and blockchain services such as Particl Marketplace or the BasicSwap DEX to be deployed on and accessed from the web.

With that in mind, this release is a significant milestone for the project and sets the stage for radically more accessible Particl applications; a necessity in order to ramp up their usage and adoption.

Yet another week comes to pass, which means it's time for our weekly development progress report! This week, we've had the pleasure of seeing the long-anticipated release of Particl Electrum and have been making steady progress on the various components that make our current primary focus.

Let's get into the details right away!

Particl Desktop Progress Update

This week regarding Particl Desktop, has seen its focus split into two fronts.

On the in-market messaging front, we're continuing to make progress on the inbox system. We're currently nearing completion of its integration into the ordering process (buy flow), and once that is complete, we'll start on its listing-based integration.

Aside from work being done on the new messaging system, we've received a few issue and bug reports from some of the vendors currently operating on the marketplace. This has led to the discovery of a couple of issues in the marketplace codebase, as well as the addition of additional functionalities.

For this reason, we've seen a temporary decrease in the number of listings currently published on the marketplace as some of the sellers, some of which have encountered similar issues, are waiting for them to be resolved before relisting. In some cases, the changes can be made locally, and so we expect some more listings to come back up even before the next release of Particl Desktop 3.2.  

BasicSwap and Particl Core Progress Update

This week has seen the long-anticipated release of Particl Electrum, the light wallet which lets you manage your PART wallets without having to sync the entire blockchain. As such, two releases have been made this week with the second one adding the ability to cold stake funds stored on Electrum using Partyman as well as introducing the ability to send funds to stealth (private) PART addresses.

But as mentioned, managing funds through the Particl Electrum client is merely scratching the surface of what we intend to do with it. Indeed, its back-end codebase provides light services that can be used to make distributed applications more accessible. In Particl's case, it becomes notably useful for future web and light releases of BasicSwap and the marketplace.

Additionally, large merges have been made from Bitcoin's upstream code into Particl Core. You can see a list of the most notable additions since the new Particl Core 23.0 update by following https://github.com/tecnovert/particl-core/blob/41d2a75f89f80ecc6ed35a642b83db0d61a9f44e/doc/release-notes-particl.md#next-major-version. As always, these changes are critical to keep Particl's code as secure and modern as possible.

On the BasicSwap front, we've successfully finalized, this week, the integration of Tor into the DEX platform! That means that it'll be possible to activate the additional layer of privacy that Tor offers either when first setting up the client or later on by manually routing its connection through the onion layer. Along with this notable privacy update, we've updated the DEX's Bitcoin node to work over the more recent 22.0 version.

As for its user interface, we are still making steady progress, and it is the current main focus of Particl's designer Gerlof van Ek. We will keep you updated and will provide additional information about its release timeframe as soon as we are able to.

The week is coming to an end, and with it comes our usual progress report! This week, we've got some exciting development on the side of Particl Desktop, with its new version finally nearing the beginning of the testnet round of testing!

Let's jump right in and get into these details!


Particl Desktop Progress Update

This week we've seen significant progress with the upcoming messaging system that will be added to the marketplace. Dare we say that it is...right around the corner? 😅

In fact, it is now nearing completion, with the majority of the work in Particl Desktop being now completed. As it stands now, there are only a couple of issues that still need to be addressed and one or two additional features that still need to be implemented relating to the messaging. Still, those are minor compared to the work that's already been done on that end.

For example, the ability to save a label, like a name or an identifier, to a particular chat address still needs to be added to the desktop client; a feature that should take no time to add.

In addition, there are still a couple of non-messaging issues that we've come across that need to be looked at. By fixing these, along with the now-quite-impressive number of improvements and bug fixes since our last desktop client update, you can guess that Particl Desktop 3.2 is going to have a much better user experience and feel much smoother, especially for vendors who've submitted a non-negligible list of feedback, comments, and suggestions! Thank you all for your constant reports; they help immensely in improving Particl!

With all of the above in mind, the focus for next week will be to complete all of the messaging-related changes (final desktop client implementation issues and final additional features) and do the final internal testing of the entirety of the messaging implementation. We'll also strive to finish off the other non-messaging issues.

And so, we hope to be able to initiate the building process for Particl Desktop 3.2 towards the end of next week or early into the following week. Regardless of when that process starts, expect a thorough update on the matter in next week's progress report!

Particl Core Progress Update

This week on Core, we've rebased the PartPayServer based on a request from a potential new partner to use the latest version of Particl Core. That means the payment server is now compatible with Taproot!

For those who don't know, PartPayServer is a payment module that can be integrated into any website to accept both Bitcoin and Particl payments. The payment module can be integrated onto almost any website or platform or be added to any WooCommerce shop using the BtcPayServer plugin (cross-compatible with PartPayServer).

If you would like to accept Bitcoin or Particl payments on your website or online shop (not hosted on Particl Marketplace), we recommend getting PartPayServer here.

You'll find all the required documentation on setting it up here. Additionally, if you want to install and run the WooCommerce plugin, refer to this document here. Although the documentation is made for BtcPayServer, PartPayServer is completely cross-compatible with the plugin and will work without issue. Just make sure to enable the Separate Payment Gateways setting to accept PART and get to the api key from btcpayserver by going to: Account -> Manage account -> api keys. It's listed in the next section after automatically setting up the api key. Finally, for this to work, you'll need to set up your own store and wallets in PartPayServer.

Aside from this rebase, the rest of the focus has gone towards keeping the Particl codebase up-to-date with Particl Core, as is usual.

Broadcasting Lower Market Listing Fees

As most of you know, the size of the Particl Marketplace listing fees is dependent on what the network wishes to see. Anyone who stakes PART can broadcast their fee preferences and influence the rate with which the marketplace bases its listing fees.

Since the fee broadcasting feature was fixed and re-enabled on our last hardfork, the community has lowered listing fees significantly. Indeed, we've seen a 66.6% decrease in listing fees, going from a target fee rate of 20,767 to 6,935 at the time of this writing. So how does that translate into real-world data? Let's check it out.

For this example, let's assume a seller sells 100 items over 30 days. He averages three high-quality images and a reasonable description length in each listing. Thus, this example assumes an SMSG message size of around 0.5 MB. In total, after a month's worth of listing with PART's value set at $0.80), the seller would have paid $83.22 in total. Note that because there is no sales fee or any other eCommerce-related fee on the platform, that is all the seller will pay, regardless if sales are made or not. However, the fiat valuation of the listing fee does change depending on the PART price.

With this data on hand, now you're in a better position to judge whether or not you want to broadcast lower or higher fee target rates. If you'd like to change your preferences, we invite you to read the blog post on the topic here and change your preferences accordingly!

With the week coming to an end, it's time for our weekly progress report. And boy has this week been a busy one with the release of several updates both to Particl Core and Particl Desktop.

So let's not waste any time and jump right into the crux of this update!‌

Particl Desktop Progress Report

This week has been championed by the release of two very important updates to Particl Desktop. Indeed, an odd issue surfaced in which marketplace listings were not being received and decrypted by other peers of the network. While this did not affect the sellers' ability to publish listings, it caused products not to show up for other users creating the illusion of an empty marketplace.

After relentless troubleshooting and debugging with some of our current vendors, the root cause of the issue was identified and Particl's desktop developer Arnold Bansemer pushed out a fix that resolves this issue.

Although the Particl Desktop 3.1.2 fixed a significant portion of this issue, the patch was later completed with the release of the 3.1.3 versions which fully fixes the problem for good. Because this bug causes significant issues to the marketplace's user experience (you can't see listings), this update is necessary for anyone that wants to use Particl Marketplace.

And so, although we hoped to be done this week with the in-market messaging system, the major issue mentioned just above created delays in its completion. We can, however, report that it is almost complete by now. Once fully ready and internally tested, we'll be ready to issue testnet builds for the Particl community to test out the new major feature thoroughly.

Particl Core Progress Update

As for Particl Core, this was a very busy and productive week as well. We've also seen two releases for the two most popular Particl codebases; Particl Core 0.19 and 0.21. ‌
New Particl Core Releases Available

These two releases fixed an array of bugs, notably one that prevented some anon outputs from being properly displayed within the Coin Control menu. It also introduced a few improvements like Particl's 0.19 codebase now having the same default ring size as all other maintained codebases as well as Particl Desktop. This improves the level of privacy of people making anon transactions using the 0.19 codebase by unifying the default value across all environments.

Note that, since these two releases were in pre-release mode, Particl's cold staking application doesn't automatically update to them yet. This is normal. In fact, ever since the release of 0.21.2.8 earlier this week, the build has been updated to deal with a specific issue regarding peer selection and banning. Since then, the 0.19.2.20 has been made into a full release, therefore, Partyman should be able to update.

Additionally, we released today, a new build in pre-release for Particl Core 22.0 (note the change in nomenclature that comes with Bitcoin's latest codebase version).

Particl Desktop Progress Report

This week, we've made considerable progress on the in-market messaging system. We have, in fact, completed its initial integration.

Thus, we've spent a good portion of the week testing it in a live environment and have identified three issues that we are now working on resolving, with one being likely fixed already (testing of the fix is ongoing at the time of this writing). We hope to resolve the other two issues by the end of this coming weekend, or early into the coming week.

Once these issues are resolved, the new messaging system for the marketplace app will be ready, which means Particl Desktop 3.2 will also be ready for its testnet round. We are aiming, barring any unforeseen issues, to begin the process of getting the testnet builds ready for release by mid or late next week. We will keep you updated about the process.

With the week coming to a close, it's time for our weekly progress report! This week, we've got some exciting news to share we're sure you'll love in regards to Particl Desktop 3.2, so let's not waste time and get to it right away!

Particl Desktop Progress Update

This week, we've finally completed the integration of the new messaging system into Particl Marketplace! This new feature lets sellers and buyers (or potential buyers) communicate with each other in a free-flow form.

You can now send messages to the seller directly from a listing's public chatroom

This new update introduces user messaging in two different ways. On one end, each listing now has a "public chatroom" in which any user can ask questions to the seller. All messages posted in a listing's chatroom are publicly viewable, meaning anyone can see current and past messages sent this way. This function is likely to replace the "Reviews" functionality, although we would love to get your feedback and thoughts on the matter during Particl Desktop 3.2's testnet round.

On the other end, a private chatroom, only accessible and viewable to the seller and the buyer of an item, is opened up when placing an order. Communications initiated this way are entirely end-to-end encrypted and anonymous, and it is impossible for any third-party or middleman to intercept messages. Messages are propagated through the SMSG network and never go through any central server. Private in-order chatrooms are available from the Order section of the Purchases and Sell pages, depending on whether you are the seller or the buyer.

At this time, the messaging system is tied to the marketplace and isn't a standalone feature yet. We plan on isolating that feature moving forward to make it possible to open private chatrooms with individuals without having to use Particl Marketplace.

With the messaging system now ready for the marketplace, we are currently looking at a few minor issues raised within the last few days and, if there's any fix required, they'll be included in Particl Desktop 3.2.

Barring any issue stemming from the current round of internal testing, we'll be ready to release Particl Desktop 3.2 on testnet within the next 24 to 72 hours. Then, if all goes well, we'll be able to release it, on mainnet, a few days after that.

As always, we highly encourage you to come and help us test this new major Particl Desktop release to ensure that no edge case or environment-specific issue is missed by the team. Additionally, as we've mentioned just a bit above, we're also curious about your feedback regarding the deprecation of the Reviews functionality in favor of public chatrooms within listing pages.

Earlier this week, we pre-released Particl Core 0.21.2.9, a release focused on network stability, on Github. It includes a variety of SMSG network improvements and also improves the stability of the blockchain's connectivity by banning misbehaving peers more effectively. While this is still marked as a pre-release, meaning your cold staking nodes won't update automatically through Partyman, we encourage you to install this new version and report back to the team should you encounter any issues. It will be marked as a full release shortly.

We've also pushed a minor cosmetic fix to Particl Electrum mobile which changes the display of staking transactions from a negative fee to a correctly marked staking reward.

To that effect, we pushed, a few hours ago, new mobile builds (.apk) for Android that fix this issue.

As usual, various code adaptions and merges have been done as part of our ever-ongoing process of keeping Particl Core up-to-date with Bitcoin's latest version. You can always keep track of those changes by following this link.

As a reminder, while this task may appear "mundane" on the surface, it is vital for the deployment of certain functionalities that are critical to the success of our ecosystem.

For example, Taproot, which is now available on Particl, is poised to become an important feature of the upcoming BasicSwap DEX. By not keeping the Particl Core codebase up-to-date with the ongoing Bitcoin developments, integrating such a major feature would not only be very messy and time-consuming, but it would also potentially be unsafe as it would be missing important dependencies.

What keeping up with the Bitcoin codebase allows Particl to do is to leverage all the new exciting updates, features, and functionalities of Bitcoin and integrate them, when and if needed, into our wider ecosystem in a timely and safe manner.

BasicSwap 📈

We do not have anything in particular to mention this week on BasicSwap other than what was mentioned in last week's report. We are still working on finalizing the DEX's user interface and it is the current main focus of our designer and lead UI/UX, Gerlof van Ek.

Without losing any time, let's get down to the crux of this week's update right away!


Particl Desktop Progress Update

As we've mentioned in recent past updates, we've been working on updating Particl Desktop's dependencies to make the client up-to-date with all the latest versions of the packages it uses. This would, notably, fix some launch issues that have been happening with some OS environments such as Manjaro or Fedora Linux distributions.

Today, we can report that the base changes are mostly sorted out and that there are 2 changes left before we can officially mark this task as completed:

    Complete the marketplace tests (ensuring that all updated dependencies work as expected);
    Complete the ZMQ-related changes for electron to ensure that Particl Desktop works without issues on Windows.

Once those changes are done, we'll start the process of building Particl Desktop across the different platforms and then test that all the expected functionality works within these environments. We expect to get started on that during the course of next week.

Once everything is tested and confirmed to be ready, we'll create test builds for internal testing, and if no issues are detected, then we'll end up releasing this as Particl Desktop 3.2.1.

BasicSwap 📈

This week has been a continuation of the work mentioned in our previous progress report. We've made, once again, some good progress on both the DEX's user interface and the ability to pick up multiple or fraction of orders from its order book, although that feature is not fully ready yet.


Listing Seeding Proposal

With product codes now integrated into Particl Desktop 3.2, we can now move ahead with the marketplace listing seeding CCS proposal.

As a reminder, this CCS proposal, headed by Arnold Bansemer and Cryptoguard, aims at populating the marketplace with a significant number of listings and automating some of the processes involved with the publishing of listings and processing of orders.

In the coming weeks, we'll have the first iteration of this proposal ready after which point we'll iterate it over and improve as we move ahead. Because this proposal is being managed in a personal capacity, its development is not part of the official team scope but is going to be a focus for its owners nonetheless for the next few weeks.

Open-Source Privacy in the Digital Age

Cryptography was invented as a solution to communicate through unsecured channels in a totally private manner with complete control over what parties receive the information you wish to broadcast.

In its essence, it dates all the way back to transposition ciphers — a cryptosystem over 2,000 years old — but the idea then was the same as it was during WW2 and as it is today: controlling access to information.

As we live through this challenging information age, obstacles to our privacy and data sovereignty are more present than ever. Finding trustworthy solutions to those challenges can be difficult, and sometimes even misguided.

Can true privacy and security really be effective in this information age? Do they even exist anymore? And if so, how can we make sure that we remain protected online?


The State of Global Surveillance

As we’ve explored before, there is very little we do online that does not ultimately get compiled into a marketable and exploitable database. Every tech giant tracks your online habits in myriads of ways, and they use that information to build customer profiles identifying us, or worse.

And although public awareness has largely increased about that parasitic phenomenon within the last decade — indeed, a 2020 study by the data firm Data Axle found that over 80% of people are more concerned about the privacy of their data than ever before, across all generations. Over 50% even agreed that giving a company their personal information constituted a risk to them — the public is left with very limited and misleading solutions to this problem.

While tech corporations are, with good reason, bearing a large share of the public backlash against data collection, we know today that it is small potatoes compared to the true behemoth of information gathering: The United States’ NSA, PRISM, and the surveillance infrastructure of nearly all US-allied nations.


Big Brother is Watching You 24/7 

In 2013, the Edward Snowden revelations took the world by storm. In reports published by The Guardian and the Washington Post, Snowden’s leak included evidence of a vast network of global surveillance established by the United States government and in which several nation’s intelligence communities participated in one way or another. This massive scale of data consumption and analysis also involved some of the world’s biggest tech companies, some of which were even compensated to the tune of millions of dollars for their compliance with the surveillance program. Described as the NSA enjoying “direct access” to the information of dozens of companies, the scandal involved not also tech giants but also telecommunication providers.

Today the sheer scale of global surveillance can only be inferred, as many of those initial revelations are almost a decade old. There are no signs that the machine has slowed down, and something we know for certain is that the computing capabilities of the Fourteen Eyes surveillance and intelligence sharing network continue to increase exponentially, year after year.


Leveraging Information Technologies

We are faced with a unique challenge; the privacy of much of our lives and of our private conversations has been undermined to a level that only modern technology can make possible. Yet, the same technologies that face us with unprecedented threats to our privacy also offer us many strong protections. To that end, Edward Snowden did, indeed, give us a strong hint: “encryption works”.

Modern end-to-end encryption is an invaluable asset for each of us. Not only does it protect our data from prying eyes, it also helps maintain its integrity and protects any transfer of information against man-in-the-middle attacks of all kinds. Thankfully, encryption protections are becoming more and more common in the current tech landscape, even though encryption backdoors are still a threat to its efficacy against government entities. However, there is a very important caveat to "e2ee"; it cannot be trusted if it's deployed on closed-source software.


Closed-Source Privacy is Trust-Based Privacy

Open-source software has a critical role to play in this fight for privacy. Privacy software that can be publicly audited can be verified not to include any backdoors or workarounds, unlike closed-source alternatives that rely on users’ trust in their privacy claims.

Indeed, it was revealed by the New York Times in 2013 that $250 million USD a year was spent by the NSA on inserting backdoors into commercial and encryption products — and the agency worked directly with tech companies in order to do so. That is why open-source software plays a critical role in this fight for privacy.

Software that can be publicly audited can be verified by experts and contributors around the world not to include any compromising elements or contingencies. True privacy relies, in part, on the soundness of the encryption protocol an app uses, and so, one has to be able to peek into the code to ensure no monkey business or poor implementation goes on.

Of course, even open-source code can fall victim to zero-day exploits and black swan events like we've seen with Heartbleed, but the likeliness of an attack or backdoor being successfully deployed on open-source applications like Signal, for example, is multiple times less likely than on closed-source software that relies exclusively on user trust.


To Hide the Signal You Must Generate Noise

In a perfect world, it should not be up to the individual to bear the burden of protecting their privacy. One's initial inclination might be to expect democratically elected legislative bodies to secure those rights for us. That is, however, utopic and detached from reality. That's because respecting people’s privacy is against the interests of those in power, and they'll fight it up tooth and nail again and again, often in the name of national, societal, or personal security.

For this unfortunate reality, information privacy, especially in an era of informational warfare, ultimately cannot be left to increasingly globalized governmental entities, and especially not for extended periods of time. The interests of power, like nature, will find a way.

Strong, seamlessly integrated encryption and its integration within open-source software will allow us to develop communication structures resistant to the abuses and silencing of mass data gatherers — but only if the product can be trusted, is easy to use, and is open to all, outside of politics.

Particl is a decentralized ecosystem of privacy and liberty focused applications. Its network enables decentralized applications (dapps) and smart contracts in a manner similar to Ethereum, Avalanche, and Solana. Particl, however, presents major differences from those other protocols.

Most “dapp networks” make exclusive use of ‘smart contracts’ — automated programs that run on blockchains and execute actions based on certain conditions. And while smart contracts deployed on blockchains are certainly revolutionary, they can carry certain security risks and technical limitations — notably in terms of scaling and data storage.

Typically, in order to support smart contracts, a blockchain has to be built (or forked) from the ground up, with smart contract functionalities already in mind from the beginning. That’s because smart contract compatible blockchains usually require a VM integration for the smart contract code to execute.

While smart contracts are often touted as the end-all-be-all of what makes dapps possible, there are a few other ways to build and deploy decentralized applications. Such is the case with Particl and its use of the SecureMessaging (SMSG) protocol.

The Issue with “Privacy-Focused dapps” Within the Web3 Community

While a number of other dapp networks claim to offer “smart contracts with privacy”, they usually focus on one or another aspect of what makes a dapp private. Unfortunately, they fail to check all the boxes that would truly set them aside traditional web applications. They either:

    Use traceable payments or traceable forms of currency;
    Leak contract contents publicly to anybody, at any time;
    Leak the IP addresses of their users, compromising the identity and privacy of users;
    Rely on third-party servers/nodes/hosts controlled by large corporations with questionable ethics or intentions;
    Are not entirely non-custodial, making it possible for coins to be lost, stolen, or even seized by central authorities

For a dapp to be considered truly private, or truly decentralized, it should ideally check all of these boxes. Else, they are just glorified “web2” applications trying to exploit users by capitalizing on the web3 hype, but without providing its promised benefits. And we know that is often the case, as we’ve explored before, making it potentially very damaging to a user that expects to be acting in total privacy or in full control of their assets when they are, in fact, not.


Truly Decentralized Apps Done Different

Particl does dapps too, as is quite obvious with the one-of-a-kind Particl Marketplace, but it does so in a way that's completely different than the rest of the dapp networks.

Its blockchain is built using the latest Bitcoin code, which, unlike its Ethereum counterpart, does not support “turing-complete smart contracts”. It does, however, absolutely support smart contracts — just a more rigid and tight version of them. Although already powerful enough to create wonderful applications without intermediary, Bitcoin smart contracts are also expected to expand in utility with the integration of Taproot and the upcoming Taproot-based TARO protocol. Subsequently, PART will adopt these features.

The purpose of Particl’s blockchain within its ecosystem is many:

    Allow users to send, receive, and hold an untraceable currency in a wallet or through its dApps (i.e., Particl Marketplace or the BasicSwap DEX);
    Create and interact with smart contracts;
    Allow for a community governance of its dapps and of the network as a whole

Notably, the privacy-focused Particl blockchain does not take the role of hosting and running the ecosystem’s dapps, and does not manage any data on-chain. That’s because that role is, most often than not, not managed by smart contracts, but instead by a completely separate layer: the SecureMessaging (SMSG) P2P network.


SecureMessaging (SMSG) — A Game Changer for Dapps

The SecureMessaging (SMSG) network is Particl’s secret sauce and what sets it aside from any other “dapp networks”. It is its own custom-built and unique P2P messaging network that stands at the very core of its ecosystem. Inspired by the BitMessage protocol, the SMSG network is a decentralized storage network (DSN) that stores and transfers data across nodes in a privacy-preserving manner, encrypted from end to end (E2EE).

What SMSG does is enable a private and secure data transfer layer for dApps to leverage. Contrary to smart-contracts, which often run through centralized third-party nodes, every user of Particl dapp is a SMSG node, ensuring an optimal level of decentralization but also making active and passive network analysis much more complicated.

As a result, you create complex applications without middlemen and data mining without relying on over-complicated smart-contracts that may leave glaring holes open for attackers to exploit.

SMSG powers Particl dapps, like the Particl Marketplace and the upcoming BasicSwap DEX, but without bloating the blockchain with excessive data and without leaving any permanent record.

SMSG's Network Topology

SMSG occupies several important functions within the current Particl ecosystem:

Data storage and transfer: The network can store almost any type of data and transfer it from one user to another, or to the entirety of the network, in a completely end-to-end encrypted and decentralized manner. The identities of the sender and receiver(s) of that data remain anonymous at any point in time to unauthorized parties and there’s no server involved at any point of the process.

Secure communications: Text, too, is data. The SMSG network allows for two or more parties to communicate with one another through an instant messaging protocol, without relying on any centralized servers. All messages are end-to-end encrypted and can never be decrypted by an unauthorized party.

Execute smart escrow instructions: A critical part of the Particl Marketplace dapp is its unique two-party escrow system which relies on a simplified Bitcoin-style smart contract. Instead of coding several functions and conditions into the smart contract itself, which carries its load of risks and potential vulnerabilities, the Particl smart contract instead listens to instructions received from the SMSG network based on the action of participating users. This simplifies the smart-contract process, which in turn limits vulnerabilities, and offsets the complex interaction with the escrow to the SMSG network. When it comes to smart contracts, simplicity is security.

Host marketplace listing content: Because hosting listing data (i.e., product descriptions and images) directly on-chain can quickly bloat a blockchain and make it incredibly large, the Particl Marketplace dapp relies on SMSG’s private data storage functionality to store and provide that information.

Enable complex DEX with orderbooks: With the help of SMSG and ‘scriptless scripts’, a type of off-chain smart contract, cross-chain DEXs can now exist with complete order book functionalities that don't require central parties to store and process its data. While the atomic swap technology lets two users swap cryptocurrencies with no intermediary, a secondary messaging layer is necessary to carry data between the two chains without the use of wrapped assets or third parties — which is precisely where most of the challenges related to cross-chain DEXs lie.  SMSG takes the role of safely and privately aggregating the information (order details, order prices, user actions, etc.) and communicating between users of two different blockchains, like Particl, Bitcoin, and even Monero.

As we can see, a lot can be accomplished with Particl’s basic smart contracts using the SMSG network. It is what puts the Particl ecosystem in a league of its own and the reason why Particl’s dapps possess a level of privacy and decentralization that is unmatched — there isn't any compromise and they truly check all the boxes mentioned in the section above!

Improving SMSG Beyond its Current Capabilities

As we’ve seen, SMSG is a great P2P network that enables private data storage and processing, secure and encrypted communications, and even anonymous dapps. But it’s also faced with a significant challenge — that of scalability.

Indeed, for all its glory, the SMSG network is limited in terms of scalability and could bottleneck when Particl reaches a large enough level of adoption. While it can support a lot of data and many thousand of messages per day, it could hit its throughput limit should too many people use it at the same time, or if it’s made to support a particularly heavy data load.
SMSG 2.0 — More Scalability and More Functionality

This is the reason why the Particl team plans, as part of its roadmap, a major overhaul of its code, which includes the exciting release of SMSG 2.0. This SMSG update will make Particl’s unique open source P2P network scalable enough to support any level of adoption — a must when building dApps that seek to challenge the status quo!

Additionally, it will not only support data storage and transfer anymore, but also support the hosting and browsing of content on it, similarly to how the Tor network functions. Imagine browsing web pages and using dapps straight from the SMSG network and without connecting to the "clearnet". That's what where we're headed at!

Particl Desktop Progress Report

The week has been spent mostly dealing with getting the marketplace to run in the updated electron version, and we can confirm that this is all completed and sorted by now.

We've also been able to continue with fixing some of the bugs reported, with only one last issue left to fix. This issue relates to disappearing listings on the marketplace. Once it is resolved, we'll then need to do a final set of tests across all the different operating systems, just to check that there are no unexpected surprises for each. This process is going to take a few days, but we expect it to go smoothly.

With that being said, next week will mostly be focused on pushing this whole change out of the door onto new testnet builds.

On top of these usual merges, we've added a minor improvement to the display of cold staking information.


BasicSwap

We're happy to confirm that we've nearly completed an important update to BasicSwap, which allows for the fast syncing of a full Bitcoin node using BTCPayServer's "datadir" file. That means BasicSwap can be configured to quickly sync the Bitcoin blockchain so that you can get started swapping cryptocurrencies in just a few minutes! Keep in mind that Monero can simply connect to a public node, so Monero swappers can get started super fast as well! 🎉

Additionally, we've also almost completed a major change to BasicSwap's behavior that allows for multiple or fractional orders to be picked up to complete one trade. For example, if you wish to swap XMR for a total of 0.15 BTC, but there isn't any order of precisely 0.15 BTC on the order book, this change allows you to either take a fraction of a larger order or multiple smaller orders.

While these two major changes are nearly completed, there are a few DB-related changes that still need to happen before they are fully ready, but that should be completed shortly.

Finally, we've been making additional back-end improvements to the BasicSwap protocol and have been making steady progress to the DEX's user interface as well.

Another week that ends, another progress report sees the day. This week, we've been finalizing both the testing and bug fixing for the upcoming Particl Desktop 3.2.1 release as well as critically approaching launch-readiness for BasicSwap's open beta phase.

So, without further ado, let's jump right into it!

Particl Desktop Progress Report

This week has been spent mostly troubleshooting and fixing some last remaining issues with the intended Particl Desktop 3.2.1 builds. There have been a couple of little issues discovered during testing, although nothing with a major impact at the moment or that is problematic to fi. Indeed, most of them have already been resolved by now.

Ultimately, the testing of the changes has been going well for now. In fact, it is quite likely to be complete, and for Particl Desktop 3.2.1 builds to be released either later today or over the weekend. Because the scope of the back-end changes significant, notably as it deals with dependencies, these will be testnet builds. We highly recommend everyone in the community to give them a try and see if everything runs smoothly, again largely because of the significance of the changes that have gone into it.

BasicSwap 📈

This week, we've upgraded the BasicSwap DEX to work using the latest versions of the Litecoin and Monero cores. This has led to the appearance of a lot of minor and obstructing issues, but this has been successfully resolved.

Additionally, the latest feature upgrade mentioned in our previous update, namely the ability to pick multiple or fractions of orders and to quickly sync the Bitcoin blockchain, are now ready and will be merged to the main repository imminently.

As for the DEX's GUI progress, it's been going very well and we're finally nearing its completion. Once that is complete, we'll run one final internal testing round along with the closed beta group and will be ready to release the open beta publicly right after!

Particl Desktop Progress Report

Testnet Status
Shortly after the publication of last week's progress report, we released, on testnet, the latest version of Particl Desktop (3.2.1). So far, we have received very few reports of issues from the community. And so, the builds seem to be stable on the various environments that used to be problematic, which means we'll be able to release it on mainnet within the next few days. Particl Desktop 3.3
Aside from taking care of the current testnet round, most of the rest of the week has been spent digging into the coming changes for Particl Desktop 3.3.

At this time, we're currently working on changing the way Particl Core interacts with Particl Desktop so that it doesn't necessarily automatically starts when the desktop client is launched. That's part of the user configuration-related updates coming to Particl Desktop 3.3.

Indeed, you will have the option to launch Particl Core automatically, and that may be the preferred way for the vast majority of people, but you will also be able to manually start it after the application launches. This will allow you to configure various startup options first, such as having core connect via Tor from the first launch. Or providing more controls for connecting to an already running core service.

Minor Core Bug Fix (Edge Case)

wallet: Only mark anon/blind tx outputs as change if wallet owns inputs.

We've pushed a minor commit that fixes an edge case with Particl Core. It changes the code so that outputs will be marked as "change only" if the script they're received on is derived from the internal key chain and the containing transaction spends outputs from the wallet.

Before this fix, the only criteria was that the output script was from the internal key chain, meaning if a transaction was sent from another wallet to an internal key (path m/1/...), the receiving wallet would treat all the outputs as "change" despite not owning any of the inputs to the transaction. And because change outputs are hidden in the output of some RPC functions, the transaction would not show in listtransactions or listsinceblock without a debit entry. It would, however, show in filtertransactions, but without output details.


BasicSwap
This week, we've merged minor BasicSwap DEX improvements and have been working through the process of finalizing the first version of the GUI for the open beta phase before we run a final internal testing round. As always, we've been making steady progress and haven't encountered many obstacles, although there is nothing specific or that stands out to be mentioned. In this case, no news is good news!

BasicSwap in a Nutshell

BasicSwap is both a cross-chain and private decentralized exchange (DEX) protocol and a trading app that allows you to swap one cryptocurrency for another without any middleman or third-party being involved. It lets you make or take orders on a distributed order book and execute swaps that are safe, trustless, unrestricted, and private. All of this combined sets BasicSwap apart from the unfathomable number of so-called DEX’s out there, and creates an environment that is totally free of any central point of failure. And best of all: it’s all available without trading fees.

In the coming days, BasicSwap will be released as a powerful and very easy to use DEX client with useful features exclusive to its protocol. It offers a uniquely private and decentralized way to swap several cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Litecoin, but also privacy coins like Monero (XMR) or Particl (PART) with no compromise to your privacy and a heavy focus on ease of use.

Any layer-1 (L1; Bitcoin, Monero, Ethereum, Firo, Particl) blockchain that supports atomic swaps can ultimately be handled by the protocol. Subsequently, if a L1 blockchain with residing layer-2 (L2) tokens is connected to the BasicSwap protocol, their native tokens (i.e., Ethereum’s ERC20 tokens like Chainlink, 0x, or Tether) become supported naturally as well.

A DEX Trading Platform and Protocol at the Same Time

BasicSwap is a DEX trading platform and an open-source trading protocol at the same time. While its open beta phase will be exclusively in the form of a distributed local client, its underlying protocol can be used by any outside contributor to build other DEX platforms with different features or services offered.

This much will become increasingly apparent and useful as we near the beginning of Particl’s upcoming new major development cycle in which the ecosystem will adopt a much more modular and interconnected approach, essentially allowing dApp developers to easily and readily integrate swap or trading functionality into their own dApps or third-party services without having to re-implement these functions from scratch.

Who is it for?

Decentralized exchanges generally come with certain limitations compared to centralized alternatives. But it’s certainly useful for many, and in other cases, a literal life-saver. So why, exactly, should you rather use a decentralized exchange rather than centralized solution and what benefit can BasicSwap give you that others can’t?

Particl Desktop 3.2.2 Live on Mainnet

Particl Desktop 3.2.2 is now available on mainnet and fixes a bug related to listings and order messages not being received properly.

Particl Desktop 3.2.2 is a new desktop client update that fixes a bug with the marketplace where, in some cases, listings and other messages were not being received or processed from Particl Core when the market service was not running.

The desktop client update is already live on mainnet and the patch should fix any issue with missing listings or order messages. 

While this update may seem minor in scope, it fixes an important issue that can significantly impact the user experience (either by not seeing available listings or, in the case of sellers, missing customer orders). For this reason, we strongly recommend updating your desktop client.

With the week coming to an end, the time for our weekly development progress report arises! This week has been a busy one with two Particl Desktop releases and the important detailed announcement of BasicSwap, Particl's upcoming private, free, and unrestricted DEX.

Particl Desktop Progress Report

Desktop Client Updates ✅

This week, we've released two Particl Desktop updates (3.2.1 and 3.2.2). Both of these desktop client updates are intended to fix bugs and improve the overall user improvements with a few tweaks to the desktop client and marketplace dApp.

Notably, Particl Desktop 3.2.2 fixes a particular bug that caused, in some circumstances, listings and orders to not show up on some user's clients due to the market service not being able to receive SMSG messages from Particl Core when offline. This is now resolved.

Because both of these clients fix a lot of issues, we strongly recommend updating your desktop client as soon as you can so that you can benefit from the most up-to-date Particl experience.


Particl Desktop 3.3 🛠️

As the two previously-mentioned Particl Desktop client updates occupied most of this week's time, the work related to Particl Desktop 3.3 mentioned in last week's development progress report is still ongoing.

    We're currently working on changing the way Particl Core interacts with Particl Desktop so that it doesn't necessarily automatically starts when the desktop client is launched. That's part of the user configuration-related updates coming to Particl Desktop 3.3.

    Indeed, you will have the option to launch Particl Core automatically, and that may be the preferred way for the vast majority of people, but you will also be able to manually start it after the application launches. This will allow you to configure various startup options first, such as having core connect via Tor from the first launch. Or providing more controls for connecting to an already running core service. — Quote from last week's progress report

Aside from this announcement, we've been running various tests and minor updates to BasicSwap, which will keep on going up until the release point.

As for the DEX's GUI, all of the independent modules and pages are now completed and we're in the final process of stitching everything together. This is the last remaining part before we can start the last round of internal testing, and we'll then be able to release the open beta publicly.

Update on Marketplace Listing Fees

Back in February, we proposed a hardfork that was accepted by stakers. This added Taproot functionality into the Particl blockchain, but also fixed a bug with the dynamic marketplace listing fee functionality.

Since then, stakers have signaled to the network that they wanted lower SMSG fees, effectively massively reducing marketplace listing fees. We wanted to take the opportunity, this week, to update you on what the current figures are.

When Particl hardforked in February, the SMSG fee rate was standing at 20767. After a few months of signaling, it now stands at a mind-blowing 37!

For reference, we've polled a seller with ~300 listings on the marketplace and they've stated that, in the past 30 days, they've only paid ~2.77 PART in listing fees for the totality of their listings, listed every day.

Without applying any conclusion to the numbers above, we felt necessary to update the community on the current figures so that it can decide whether the fees should keep going down, stay as is, or be raised. As a reminder, this blog post explains, in detail, how to signal your fee preference as a staker.

Recent European Parliament developments on “unhosted wallets” regulation, passed under the guise of legislation against money laundering and terrorism financing, highlight the growing need for the uncompromising decentralization of asset custody and exchange in the cryptocurrency world.

Regular users, heavily targeted by the ruling, saw many of their freedoms treated as contingencies by the European regulatory body — once again demonstrating to those affected that they must carve their own path.

Transfers of crypto-assets will be traced and identified to prevent money laundering, terrorist financing, and other crimes, says the new legislation agreed on Wednesday.

The European parliament passed this week new wide-ranging regulations touching several aspects of the cryptocurrency ecosystem. The texts, dubbed MiCA (markets in Crypto Assets) and TFR (Transfer of Funds), aim to “ensure crypto-assets can be traced in the same way as traditional money transfers”. Moreover, they will stand for every country in the union, without the possibility for individual nations to hold a contradictory framework for regulating the target entities.

While notably introducing rigid rules for creating and maintaining stablecoins, MiCA also establishes a regulatory entity similar to the DASP, or Digital Asset Service Provider licensing authority. ‘Over-collateralized’ stablecoins, even those with a proven track record such as Dai, fall on the wrong end of this supranational ruling; only stablecoins with proven and audited 1:1 fiat reserves held by licensed third-party custodians will benefit from compliance with the new law. Decentralized finance and DAOs are not addressed in the ruling, leaving some question marks as to their current and future legal status in Europe, but it's easy to see where this is going in a longer timeframe.

An attempt was also made to further oversee what EU regulators creatively dubbed “un-hosted wallets” — wallets to which the user itself owns the private keys. While miraculously stopping short of legislating transfers between individual private wallets, this new regulation will impose KYC requirements on transfers between a cryptocurrency exchange and personal wallets for amounts going above 1000 euros.

This partial inclusion entails that Europe will require the ability to verify whether this “un-hosted wallet” is effectively owned or controlled by users residing within the union; all exchange platforms and individual wallet owners will need to be identifiable and subject to scrutiny in order to abide by the ruling.

Although Germany’s intervention ultimately derailed the more pernicious aspects of this attack on true asset ownership and privacy, the rhetoric around this in extremis last-hour reversal of only some of the most extreme aspects of the law reinforces all we need to know about the regulatory bodies trying to dictate what the future of money will be.
Uncompromising Privacy, Self-Custody, and Decentralization

People familiar with cryptography will understand that these frameworks will do next to nothing to curtail money laundering and terrorist funding — it is, instead, a textbook manifestation of regulators’ constant need to justify their legislative powers. These rulings, while unsurprising, highlight the growing need for an uncompromising decentralization not only of asset custody but also of standard trading exchange environments within the cryptocurrency world.

Liberating Society From Out-of-Touch Dinosaurs

Central to Particl’s vision is enabling a truly private, decentralized, and free (as in freedom) circular economy where you can freely participate without national and supra-national entities forcing their invasive and restrictive policies on you.

This paradigm shift requires a technological revolution that puts you, not corporations or special interest groups, at the very center and allows you to live completely "outside of the system" and of their reach.

Such an environment inevitably involves the moving and trading of assets — a role our upcoming and open-source BasicSwap decentralized exchange helps fulfill. It also involves complex activities such as commerce, a critical economic activity sector being liberated by Particl’s fully decentralized marketplace. But there's also information and its capacity to flow freely and safely between people without friction or middlemen with no room for identifiable data or central authorities. That's where a distributed, server-less messaging system, where all messages are encrypted by default before being uploaded to the network, gets all the spotlight.

Total privacy, distributed services, and strong encryption are, once again, pushed to the forefront. These solutions, when used to their full potential, offer nothing but a complete technological revolution against the backward ideologies and interests of nearly all national and supranational legislative bodies around the globe.

Because on their turf, the fight is never over — only battles are won, one at a time.

BasicSwap 📈

This has been a productive week for BasicSwap in general. We've kept on working on the various security tests to ensure that everything functions as it should and that as many edge cases as possible are covered. As always, you can follow the progress by checking out the Github commits here.

We've also been making good, steady progress on the user interface. At this point, it looks likely that it will be complete by next week and that we'll be able to initiate one last round of testing before going public with the beta!

We've also kept busy building a proper landing page for BasicSwap. The DEX's website is intended to communicate the value proposition of the DEX in a quick and user-friendly manner and will go a long way in growing the project. The website is scheduled to release at the same time as the beta.

This week, we've finished building test cases for BasicSwap and have begun using them as we've started testing the codebase for any edge case issue. We're happy to announce that, so far, everything appears to be in order and function as expected.

Additionally, we're constantly improving the DEX codebase, which you can keep track of by following BasicSwap's commit page here.

Also, parallel to the testing of the BasicSwap codebase, we've also begun testing its GUI as we near the completion of its integration into the codebase. While we've discovered a few issues early in the week, most of which have been fixed by now, we expect to start the final round of testing with the closed beta group very shortly!

Buckle up; Particl's About to Take Off

Lately, we've been working like crazy planning Particl's next evolutionary phase, as we've hinted here. This new major development cycle, which will radically improve Particl's entire ecosystem by granting a modular infrastructure, will bring the platform to new heights by opening it up to the world and making its dApps more accessible than ever.

And we're finally ready for the grand reveal! Stay tuned as we will begin to announce, next week, what we've got planned for the next phase of Particl. It will be, without a doubt, a critical milestone in the project's success — its most significant step forward since its inception in 2017. This week, we've been exploring the integration of certain coins on BasicSwap. We're working on preparing example commits showing other projects which may want to integrate their coins onto BasicSwap how to do it themselves. However, BasicSwap's true cross-chain nature makes it impossible to have a one-size-fits-all coin integration solution. Still, the example commits we're working on will nonetheless be able to facilitate the integration process of a decent number of coins.

Additionally, we've made significant progress on the DEX's GUI. We're currently working through a few issues and adding improvements as we test it before releasing publicly. But, just as a small end-of-week teaser, here is what the current order book page looks like!

Listing Seeding Proposal Progress Update

It seems like we're long overdue for an update on the listing seeding proposal! As it stands right now, we've got two short-term priorities related to Particl Desktop and the marketplace:

    Completing the Particl Desktop 3.3 changes and releasing it
    Deploying the listing seeding system

And while we're currently primarily focused on the changes related to Particl Desktop 3.3, we've already begun working on the listing seeding proposal's deliverable, notably by adding product codes in the last Particl Desktop update, which is a requirement for an improved, more complete vision we have for this proposal. But what is this "improved vision"?

Listing Seeding Proposal 2.0

Since we've published the original listing seeding proposal, many things have changed around the Particl project, especially considering last week's major announcement of an evolutionary leap forward for the ecosystem.

For this reason, we've re-imagined what we intend to deliver for the proposal so that it fits better with this new direction and have designed a more complete and open system that will drastically improve the life of Particl sellers — not just populate the marketplace with listings.

As opposed to building a relatively closed system for the exclusive purpose of seeding listings on the marketplace, we're now opting to build an open "power seller" standalone application intended to be released publicly.

This system will act as an external, advanced inventory and order management tool built for power Particl sellers. This will open up a ton of opportunities for sellers by giving them access to more advanced capabilities. Notably, you can expect most or all standard seller features to be available, such as the ability to easily create, manage and publish listings as well as up escrow parameters, manage shipping, orders, and even chat conversations outside of Particl Desktop.

But, to complement these functionalities, sellers will be able to automate a lot of the typical seller-related processes such as automatically relisting marketplace items, accepting and processing orders according to set preferences, and etc. When properly set up, it will allow sellers run their shops almost on auto-pilot and will dramatically reduce the time it requires to manage large seller accounts on Particl.

Another key function of this system will be in how it connects a seller inventory to a WooCommerce store (and, eventually, additional external platforms as we march through the upcoming development cycle). The main benefit here is the ability to install and use a wide variety of WooCommerce plugins (i.e., an automated dropshipping system like Dropified). This will grant sellers many more options than ever before on Particl Marketplace, a taste of what's to be possible with Particl's new modular and open architecture.

    Note: The system will be released with incremental feature updates.

Deploying a Mobile Version of the Marketplace Quicker

One of the main reasons we've opted to change the design of the listing seeding proposal is to be able to release a buyer-focused mobile version of the marketplace much quicker. That way, there is no requirement to wait for the full version of the improved marketplace to be ready before we can start releasing new products.

Indeed, because the first few versions of the upcoming mobile version of the marketplace will be exclusively buyer-focused, sellers still need to be able to publish listings for buyers to buy. And since listings posted on the current version of the marketplace won't show up on the new version (because the codebases will be vastly different), there needs to be a way for sellers to publish listings while we build the full version of the marketplace.

And that's where the listing seeding tool comes in handy. It will let sellers sell their products and services on the new version of the marketplace while we incrementally build the full version (on desktop and web). In other words, we'll use this tool as an intermediary for sellers, allowing us to deploy the buyer-focused mobile version of the marketplace more quickly and keep things moving smoothly.

This marks an important milestone for the project as this funds the team to develop, promote, and expand the Particl ecosystem for a duration of 12 more months, after which the team will submit a renewed funding request.

New Particl Core releases have been deployed, fixing a rare staking bug that occurred over the past few days.

Earlier in the week, we released an important update to Particl Core which fixed an odd bug regarding staking nodes falling out of sync with the rest of the network.

If you haven't updated your node(s) yet, we highly recommend updating your node as soon as possible to avoid any potential staking issues.

Notably, as this issue occurred during the on-chain vote for the team's third funding cycle, it lowered the participation rate slightly compared to what we typically see. Regardless, the vote's participation rate ended well above its minimum requirement threshold, meaning that the issue didn't negatively impact the voting process beyond that minor reduction in the participation rate.

BasicSwap 📈

Last week, we mentioned that we had completed the important process of building a standardized way to integrate certain Bitcoin-based cryptocurrencies into BasicSwap, but still required to test that implementation.

We are happy to announce that we've successfully tested, on mainnet, this new integration method, and we can report that everything went smoothly and as expected. As such, we will now be able to use this standardized approach to add more Bitcoin-based cryptocurrencies at a much faster pace and let other coin teams work out listing integrations themselves.

I don't currently hold any Particl, but it looked like it was one of the best privacy coins available way back in 2017 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2669844.0). Better than Monero? I am surprised it hasn't taken off more. It looks like you guys have been hard at work at also onboarding a decentralized exchange! Everything looks like a solid, polished, well-built platform. I remember this project being fudded on the Safex discord ages ago,
They literally organised coordinated attacks on twitter to spread disinformation.
Safex was building an anonymous descentralized marketplace, but release a centralised marketplace over an api on the mainnet that share your private information like ip, name, address to other companies, they also launched a centralised exchange.

Instead you more quiet no fudding other projects and delivered what you promised and also launch a descentralized exchange.

Safex is the most pathetic project I know, they got delisted from Coingecko and Dabek said in a US court that Safex was a scam, copied monero codebase and tried to raise money for a software that is not theirs.
