Title: Float the sahara !!
Post by: asonganyi on March 05, 2020, 07:39:41 AM

We as a people have built large pipes to transports huge volume of crud oil over long distances across the globe. Is it so difficult to do the same with water? Why haven't we done the same to transport water from ocean, sea, lake, rivers etc... to deserts all across the world where it is much needed?.

This can help increase the rate of desert greening, re-afforestation and help in the whole lots of other global related problems.

Why do you think deserts need mankind to bring them water? What about all the species of plants and animals that would die by us messing with their environment. It is extremely close minded to think that all living things need the same environmental conditions that we do to thrive.

Sure thing this will course some nuisance in other habitats marine especially but this can be done in a controlled way. Besides i think there is enough volume in the seas and oceans for us to remove before it really starts hurting anyone. the desert is growing and that is not a good thing for the planet as whole sooner or later the desert's growth along with global warming is going to affects these creatures you don't want to harm now. A stitch in time Bro saves plenty.

OMG,Do you think every plants can survive with salt water?

Definitely not, only very few species can survive and for them its not possible to grow on lands like loose sand and nothing else.

If you want this place to be greener first stop cutting the trees then can think about building water lanes from pacific to sahara. ;D

Some deserts have underground aquifers. The real problem is the shifting topsoil ( sand) About 50 years ago, Shell  produced a sticky fertiliser to try to stop this, but the nomads living there burnt or ate anything that grew, and the project was abandoned.

you may have misunderstood my intentions.   Bringing salt water to the desert doesn't mean we are going to trow it on everything that grows and lives. We have advance a lot in technology we can maneuver salt water in what ever way we want to get what every kind of water we want. first problem is to get the water where we want. And me advocating for water to be taken to the desert does  not mean i encourage deforestation. No we should be more conscious of how we cut trees and should also try planting some and why not try planting them in some crazy places like the desert... real adventure ..

wow it was an amazing attempt. can still be redone. But relaying on aquifers is a wild guess. i prefer to go with what i see. lets bring shit tone of water to these deserts and start doing some admirable stuffs!!

There are ways to turn deserts into forests. Desalinizing and piping ocean water is a non-starter. We don't have that kind of electricity or spare materials.

Probably not a starter but very good boaster. having enough water will definitely make thing a lot easier and faster. The Druzhba Pipeline: 4,000km tell me about power and material again. Besides i didn't say we only have to pipe saltwater fresh water can also be piped.

Firstly, salt water from the seas and oceans will not bring any benefits, but only harm to both the flora and fauna. Yes, even the soil.
Secondly, if we dwell on the option of fresh water and pump it out from somewhere, then the amount of this very water will decrease already where it is taken from, which will also harm the ecosystem there.

Not only the material is the issue, desalinizing the salt water produce high salt ppm water as waste then again it needs to be disposed but where? Again back to 4000 ocean? Which will pollute the water and endanger the species living under water.

seawater has a salinity of 3.5%. not that much of a waste to contain with. Don't forget that salt itself has several industrial and domestic benefits in fact there are active companies desalinizing the ocean in search for salt. of course we might have way too much salt but we can always fine a way to manage it....

Bro i don't propose feeding salt water directly to the environment it has to be processed. With the fresh water option we take just enough not to cause any significant damage in that eco-system.

Freshwater is not an option we all know why we should go looking for freshwater It does damage from freshwater It seems to me that working in the desert on the oceans oceans lakes rivers etc. is a difficult thing and no one can plant trees there But if they grow there then mankind will evolve In fact solving these problems can be very difficult.

I don't understand you clearly but sure thing is not the easiest tasks the question is ... Does it worth it? if yes then why not?

Most of you are not getting the point. may be the topic is misleading making you to think i want us to turn the desert into another ocean. that might be great but what am proposing is far from that... i just want enough water somewhere easily accessible in the desert. What ever we do with that water is left for us to decide.

some benefits below...

* having large volume of water in the desert means more evaporation and with more evaporation comes precipitation and eventually rain fall.

*global temperature is increasing, ice cap is melting floating most coastal areas piping water from these areas to where it is needed will be beneficial both to the desert and to these coastal areas. some countries are also suffering from fresh water floats.

*more water for floras and fauna, cooling

* can create an artificial lake.

etc.....

Is there land in the Sahara that is lower than the waters of the Mediterranean or Atlantic? Run a pipeline to that lowland, and siphon the water down there. The heat will evaporate the water which will humidify the land. The salt and other minerals that are left will be able to be used wherever.

Here is what Colonel Gaddafi was working on:
The new government, also called the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, made the oil companies state owned and invested a great deal of the oil profits to funnel the flow of drinking water from the underground aquifers, by installing a large number of bore wells throughout the Libyan land. Big farms were created in a southern region of Libya to motivate men and women to relocate to the desert and farm in those places. However, a lot of people in Libya preferred living in the northern and coastal parts of the country, for there was a steady and ample supply of water there.

I thought it is not completely possible to extract salt from the ocean water and can make it as fresh water of all.If we are going to reverse osmosis the salt water then it needs 200 or more litres of ocean waters to produce one litre of fresh water so all the remaining 199 will become more saltier than before which is called waste water.Correct me if I am wrong here.

The method of separation here is simple. We make use of difference in temperature at which water and salt evaporates. Just heat that shit up to 100 degrees  fresh water evaporates and what is left is salt and other residues.

Finally someone who understands what am saying.. am not talking only about the sahara bro.. any other desert or barren land can benefit from this.. Gaddafi was a GOAT.

I think  ideas to make that place green should be well researched before they are implemented.

But, I seriously believe if it is the will of the OWNER of this world that that place won't be green again, there is nothing we mere mortals can do about it.... unless the OWNER wants us to do some certain things right before we proceed with the implementation of our ideas.

What are you discussing about guys?
Making Sahara a green place? There is a reason why Saharas exist and I wonder why you think of trying to change the geology of those places. There are species that do not like water... We - as people - are always trying to destroy the nature.

Do some research. The reason some species are still there is because they adapted not because that is the way they are.. Now tell what do you do when one habitat is trying to swallow all other habitats?

This balanced the  world so there iis no way why people need to do it while the truth is we don't have to oblige  our life doing such

And besides sahara is once a ocean as you can see all are sand meaning in past it is some kind of body of water also this is according to my views but i may be mistaken also.

But dont bother making this a problem because.people there survived even before we are born.
