Title: Question: Why is my thread move to Off-Topic?
Post by: TravelMug on March 06, 2020, 01:17:23 PM
I was wondering why my topic below, originally posted in B & H board, was move to Off-topic.

[Guide]: How to disable autofill passwords on browsers (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5229776.0).

Is this not helpful enough specially for beginners to let them understand the dangers of using this autofill password capability of most browsers? I also gave one reason as well, as Racoon: Infostealer type of malware including crypto currency wallets (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5228813.0) could steal our cryptos by exploiting the autofill password.

Can someone shed light?  AFAIK, there are no active B & H moderator. (I maybe wrong)

Just for the record, I have created several guides in B & H, but it was never moved:

[Guide]: How To Report Fake Crypto Related Youtube videos (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5228485.0)
[Guide]: How to Report Crypto Related Malicious Google Ads (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5230705.0)
[Guide]: How and Where to Report Phishing Websites (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5226129.0)

:D :D Damn it, can't you tell the difference between them? The topic being moved does not have any relevance to cryptocurrencies, do you feel that? What is this forum? What are you talking about? It received some merit does not mean it is in the right place  ;) Stop complaining about your mistake! If you still feel wrong, Report to moderator ->

I would have felt comfortable leaving that guide in B&H.
since there is no explicit moderator for this subboard it was one of the global moderators or admins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5206428.0).
do you have the "move topic" button (located on bottom left) in your thread? if so you can move it again.
if not, you can use "report to moderator" to report your own post and ask for a relocation.

I don't know why it was moved, though there may be a substantial reason(or maybe a mistake)but I don't think it's because it's "not relevant to cryptocurrency", there are many threads that aren't relevant to cryptocurrency that are in the B&H board: Rank up, introductory and even giveaway threads, for me OP's guide is even closer to being related to cryptocurrency than alot of threads there. A global moderator can help clear the air on why it was moved anyway.

AFAIK,its not possible to move the thread once it was relocated by moderators because I personally tried this a long ago so he might think about trying the second option you mentioned.

thanks for the info! i could never test it myself :P
but actually logical and clear that it doesn't work after it has already been relocated. thanks again for the clarification Findingnemo.

Topics that are moved to other boards by moderators can be moved back to the previous board by the user. I don't know whether topics moved to off-topic board are exception or not.
I had created a topic to suggest not allowing users to move the topic that has already been moved by moderators. (You can visit the link below)

Whoever started moderating that part of the forum has moved a few topics to other boards in the last few days, I think one of them was mine. The board in question is very specific, and I admit there is a lot topic that has no direct connection with cryptocurrency.

Therefore, it is logical that someone has decided to take some time to clean this part of the forum, and is it up to mods or someone is start reporting more than usual, doesn't matter that much. If it's not directly related to beginners & crypto, you should look for the appropriate board - unfortunately we still don't have PC/Internet Security board.

No there are no exception for the off-topic board. Findingnemo was just wrong...(but it doesn't matter)

I agree, we need a board dedicated to security

Just now I tried moving the same thread and its possible for me to move at the moment but I still remember when I tried earlier, I couldn't do that.

If it is possible to move back the moderated thread to the same section then "what is the point of reporting and moderating such things?"

Sometimes the user isn't aware where his post should really be. A lot of times I just reported the post to the mods so they moved instead of saying "hey OP, please move to X board".

You may have mistakenly remembered, there has never been a blocking before, and so is now. Users are free to move between sections as long as they find it appropriate.

It is in the wrong section, we report it, the morderator moves it, but if this is repeated many times, this thread may be deleted. I do not remember clearly about such rules. In some cases, users try to put the topic in the inappropriate section even if it has been moved, it has been complained before  :-\ I think the topic should be deleted if repeated violations

Yes you are right I think the only solution would be to delete the thread because even when a thread is locked by a moderator, the OP is still able to move it wherever he wants...

Spring cleaning. It doesn't hurt, especially in the B & H board because honestly there are many topics that need to be moved. Thanks to whoever is moderating it because if it continues we will be able to read weather forecast topics. When I read the board I don't feel me on a cryptocurrency forum. And it makes me think about the red light district but with Merits Prostitutes™. I just need to tell Alexa to turn the living room in pink and I'm in

It's a difficult topic to evaluate. The B&H board should be for crypto beginners I guess, and that topic was for Internet beginners. Probably that was the reason it was moved.

Where threads about Security should be posted then, according to you?
Nobody will see them if there are in Off-Topic. I don't think B&H is the right place either, but if you post this kind of subject in Off-Topic you'll receive complaints. I've already received complaint for that.  :-\

Completely agree with you.
A topic about internet security shouldn't be in a board which is ignored by many users of the forum and is used for following topics.

that's why some people are lobbying for a privacy/security oriented sub forum: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5230782.0

i'm in support of the idea. important topics about privacy/security vulnerabilities, related news, and best practices are super relevant to bitcoin users. there are plenty of qualifying threads posted in various places---exchanges, service discussion, beginners and help, etc. they sometimes get moved to off topic, where they of course get buried and die.

I agree with you, moreover I think many people don't adopt Bitcoin or even leave it because of security concerns, so it's a serious topic.
Thank you for the link. It's an interesting point of view but the OP should have launched a poll instead IMHO  :-\

Agree with you both.

The description for the Off Topic board is "Other topics that might be of interest to bitcoiners." Off Topic should have been a board for discussions regarding privacy, security, online safety, encryption, PGP, programming, coding, hardware, and so on. Technical topics which are of interest to bitcoiners. Somewhere along the line it has turned in to a board of "Literally any old spam". As you say, topics in there are viewed almost exclusively by spammers and are bereft of any intelligent discussion.

I wouldn't be in favor of heavily moderating Off Topic and trying to turn it in to the kind of board I've described above, as I think the fall out to the rest of the forum would be horrendous. Many spammers would flood over in to other less moderated boards and spam them instead. I think it would be better to leave Off Topic as it is, change the description to better fit what it is, and create a new board for the kinds of topics we are discussing here.
