Title: Alvarez vs. Golovkin: The Trilogy we've all been waiting for!
Post by: Darker45 on March 18, 2020, 03:17:27 AM
At last! Or is it too late?

While it certainly frustrates me that this long-awaited match will take place just when GGG is not in his prime anymore, I still believe both of them deserves this. Not just them but the boxing fans as well. The past couple of matches were both classics in the history of boxing. Just as they were excellent boxing shows, both were also controversial, perhaps more controversial than any other recent boxing controversies.

The first fight in September 2017 was a very controversial split draw while the second one in September 2018 was as controversial with Canelo winning by way of majority decision.

While I am a huge Canelo fan, it is not the case when he is pitted against Golovkin.

Anyway, finally, this is going to happen with both fighters agreeing for a trilogy.

Quote
Golden Boy Promotions, Alvarez's promoter, are hoping to stage the bout Sept. 12 during Mexican Independence Day weekend inside AT&T Stadium outside of Dallas, although the date, site and weight class have not been finalized at this time.

Do you guys think this third match will be as exciting and explosive as the past couple of fights? And the betting odds would probably be in huge favor of Canelo?

He isn't in his prime but giving Golovkin the chance would be good. Dela Hoya can still be making money out of it just to be fair with him. Both fighters still have the toughest chins in boxing. Got to give credits to their first fight that Canelo find it tough to knock down. Surviving 12 rounds is the hardest in boxing, some boxers will even give up  due ton their tanks.

There really should be a third fight the second fight is not one-sided, it can only be one-sided if any of the boxers knocks the other guy out, Golovkin is still great and on the prime of his career and so is Alvarez, in fact he is the number one in the rng magazine, both of them deserves a third match and boxing fans also deserves to see them go at it again.

Well, as of now Canelo Alvarez was widely considered to be pound-for-pound the best boxer in the world, so it was clear that the odds were perhaps in favor with him. Indeed, the coming third match fight is a really exciting match to these both fighters but I am still on the side of Alvarez on this match. Do you think this match will reach 12 rounds?
Well, I hope this coronavirus outbreak will get rid earlier because of the coronavirus pandemic has caused a postponement.

Hopefully that time the COVID-19 will not anymore ruin the schedule of the game.
I mean, we all deserve to see a good fight, let's watch this, Alvarez is one of my favorite boxer so I am rooting for him to win this fight.

Also interested on the betting odds if its already out in the market.

I think it's too late, GGG has lost some step and he is ageing as compare to Canelo who is hitting his prime as of the moment. And we all know that Alvarez doesn't want to give Golovkin after the second fight. But when GGG signs up with DAZN eventually this fight will have to happen.

But for me, its too late, I think Canelo will win again more decisive than the second fight.

The first fight in September 2017 was a very controversial split draw while the second one in September 2018 was as controversial with Canelo winning by way of majority decision.
Both the fights had their fair share of controversy and i scored the first fight to Gennady Golovkin and the fight metric will prove that he landed more punches than Canelo Álvarez but the judges saw it differently and in my opinion the second fight was more close and the judges gave that fight to Canelo Álvarez and for Gennady Golovkin to win the rubber match he needs to win my knockout and if he waits for the judges decision he will not get the decision as we have seen in the past.

While I am a huge Canelo fan, it is not the case when he is pitted against Golovkin.
I am a huge fan of both these fighters and i wanted to see Canelo defeating Floyd Mayweather when they fought but Mayweather showed his class and Canelo was young during that encounter and the one thing i remember was that one judge scored it as a draw and he never scored any fight after that :D.

Third match will be exciting but I consider Alvarez to have an upper hand because he can take punches coming from those coming from heavy category, but Golovkin will be the hungry fighters now both champions will be coming out on wins, it should have a closure on who is the better fighter.

Not because Golovkin is 37 years right now doesn't mean that he can't fight anymore. I think that he can still fight younger boxers like what Pacquiao did. Many doubted him that he isn't at his prime anymore at age 40 but we saw how he defeated Thurman and Mathysse.

Anyway, their last fight is a classic fight like you said but for me Alvarez deserves that victory and they are deserving to have a 3rd fight TBH.

I think that it will although they didn't fight for a long time already especially GGG whose last fight is June of 2019. If this will happen for sure many bettors will favor Canelo since he won on their last fight and he is younger (8 years gap) and I hope that at the time it will happen, the virus has disappeared already or at least controlled.

September still far and i highly believe that Corona virus issue on that time would already be resolved or already had the vaccine, well nothing is assured but lets hope that this fight would push through and all of sports
events would resume out.

Going back on topic im still on Alvarez on this one, im not saying that GGG is already old but people will surely heavily favored on Canelo. It would be surprising if GGG would
able to pull out a 1-1 outcome.

I can still remember I also gave the first match to Golovkin. The second one could have be given to either of them but not the way the veteran Judge Adelaide Byrd had it; 118-110? Only a couple of rounds for GGG? I also felt GGG is the loser until proven otherwise as far as the judges are concerned. That's just my gut feeling, though.

But for me, its too late, I think Canelo will win again more decisive than the second fight.

This is also what I honestly think and dread will happen, although I am hoping for the opposite.

I hope that the event is not canceled or postponed because of the Corona Virus.I think that spectators will not be allowed as it is happening in many sport events that are taking place nowadays.Even in lower divisions in different sport leagues in the world are playing without spectators.

I gave the first fight to Gennady Golovkin and the second fight a draw in my book.

So yeah, this is a long awaited fight, but it took them two years wherein Golovkin more likely have slow down, already 38 years old and Canelo now at 29, prime age for a boxer, and has fought a lot of durable fighter by going up in weight class. I think Canelo will be heavily favoured here. But this is still very interesting, I'm thinking lots of trash talking from both camps to hype the fight, but my vote will go to Alvarez at this point in time.

Two controversial matches, they really should do it again and hopefully the better man win in a decisive way, but how can it be done when both fighters are very good in defense and offense, both fighters are made for each other they can do this many times before they are two great fighters who knows how to fight a grueling match, this is definitely a must watch fight.

Alvarez could win more convincingly this time and I agree with what @eality said that GGG has to KO Canelo for him to win this fight. Their promoters have to do an exceptional job to get boxing fans attention again for this one though. I personally lost interest for the trilogy, I think it's too late for that.

What? Is it really happening Canelo vs GGG part three?
GGG is still powerful, although he's getting older now. I think the fight would be pretty even, just like the previous fights.

Anyway:

Quote
GGG
Age: 37
Height: 179cm
Reach: 178cm
Stats: 40/1/1 (35 KOs)

Canelo
Age: 29
Height: 173cm
Reach: 179cm
Stats: 53/1/2 (36 KOs)
Source: https://boxrec.com/

I think Canelo will win by points, probably MD or UD.

Golovkin would still be a decent opponent against Alvarez. Even at 38 yrs old, his punches still packs a lot of power plus his footwork isn't too shabby at all. As for stamina inside the ring, I don't think he'd outlast Canelo and that is where the points would come in handy for the younger warrior. Don't get me wrong, this is a good fight, but if it stretches into a full 12 rounds of boxing, then we already know who the winner is via UD.

And hopefully though the virus stops from spreading now. We've missed a lot of promising sporting events just on the first quarter of this year.

There is no other good match for Canelo for now in the Middleweight division other than a fight with GGG, there is no more weak Light Heavyweight champs so he must go down  :). I am hoping that Golovkin will succeed on his third attempt to defeat Canelo which is favored on their last two meetings via controversial decisions.

Also hoping that they can finalize the date of this fight and release the line odds of course.

I wasn't even surprised about this announcement at all, why? Both Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin have contracts with DAZN and all their future fights until 2023 and 2021, respectively are controlled by them. DAZN made sure that after the 2nd match up between the two they try to spice things up by giving them fights that they will surely win. Now the final step of DAZN is of course to create the next match up between their two best boxers under contract which would mean a huge pay them to them especially when they are paying Canelo 365$ Million just for that 11 fight contract. I'm really rooting for a Gennady revenge here but he got lucky against Steve Rolls, lets just hope like he is Pacquiao who still have some fuel left to fight a more younger opponent.

Right, this is the only money fight for him, those two have clean up the Middleweight division. As for Canelo campaigning in the Light Heavyweight, it was an obvious cherry pick and fight a weak champion in Kovalev.

Also hoping that they can finalize the date of this fight and release the line odds of course.

Maybe they are looking for the COVID-19 situation first, before they release the actual date.

Exactly, remember that Golovkin keeps on chasing Alvarez and wanted a trilogy and says that he is ready?

And Alvarez keeps saying, No and uninterested. However, Golovkin sign a contract with DAZN, a good strategy for him to finally make a third fight with Alvarez and make more money between the two.
As for Alvarez, he is obligated because of the contract, so as much as he didn't want a trilogy, he can't do anything.

Come on GGG, you should have pushed Alvarez day and night for this first fight since 2018. Time is not GGG best friend.

What GGG had after their second fight ? Decent boxer from Ukrain and, lets be fair, low level class boxer from Canada Steve Rolls ? Not the best warm-up fights before the boxer GGG probably lost two fights :)

Alvarez - easy fight against Felding, UD against Jackobs and bought a belt from Kovalev :D

It will be a UD by Alvarez in their trilogy.

If I remembered it correctly DAZN was the one chasing the two stars after their 2nd fight, I don't know how fight contracts works but I think by them joining DAZN it even made their next fight more anticipated therefore more valuable for both of them. With the DAZN contract they both have they really don't have a choice but to fight the next opponent DAZN will pick for them so really it is inevitable for them to fight each other since this will be the biggest payout for the company as well as the two boxers.

^ Probably we the boxing fans deserve to watch Alvarez and Golovkin in the ring once again. I will personally be grateful to see the two legends in the ring. Both of them are deserving icons that are the best example of discipline, spirit and being champion. Nevertheless, what I worry about is the coronavirus. It would affect the schedule of the game but I am really hoping and looking forward to both to have a rematch.

Golovkin vs Szeremeta on June 6 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Lol, they have fights before facing each other? WTF, so this means that they consider that fight already as a win which for me not a good idea as there are things that might happen not on the promoters plan that will somehow derail their proposed match.

Anyways, i have read somewhere that the third fight might happen on September 12, 2020.

Golovkin was robbed of his win in the first fight and the second fight was another classic and when you have biased judges scoring the bout you cannot expect them to score properly and this is not the first time we have seen robbery in boxing and the third fight will bring in the revenue for both the fighters as well as the athletic commission, both are extraordinary boxers and i am going with Alvarez because of his young age and his skills and where they will be conducting the fight.

Yes,

Canelo and Golovkin to meet in September after interim fights

Quote
Enemies Gennadiy ‘GGG’ Golovkin and Saul Canelo Alvarez have a deal in place to meet in a trilogy fight on September 12 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas after the two take interim fights first in June, according to ESPN.

https://www.boxingnews24.com/2020/03/canelo-and-golovkin-to-meet-in-september-after-interim-fights/

Alvarez vs Saunders might be push thru June 1 though. I guess the promoters are sure that the two boxers are going to win their respective fights that's why the trilogy has been set up already. Not unless either Saunders or Szeremeta derail the much anticipated third fight between Alvarez and Golovkin.

Yes, I believed that Canelo should be the favourite based on his last performance against a LHW Kovalev.
Although GGG also won his fight after a lost to Canelo, in Derevyanchenko and Rolls, it looks lke he is not the same GGG that we are hoping to see. It seems that he had struggled on those both fights. And there could be others arguing that Derevyanchenko was very closed and he was hit more than he should get.

Golovkin was robbed of his win in the first fight

It was his fault that his was robbed. If don't want that happen, don't let the judges decide your destiny. KO your opponent is the only option.
Don't know if it fair, but instead of judges deciding who won, I'd purpose to make extra round/rounds :D This is the only way to find out who is a better fighter among two.

Canelo and Golovkin to meet in September after interim fights

What if one of them loses their interim fight? Will they meet anyway or they'll have to do extra fight because of that ?

Hahaha, that's really odd mate, why not announce this fight if they both beat their mandatory challengers. No need to hype the fight at this point because we all know that boxing fans are waiting for their trilogy.

And yes, what if either of their opponents jinx the supposedly superfight? Are the two that confident that they will beat Saunders and Szeremeta respectively?

At +200 for GGG, that is very tempting as a bettor, both are good fighters and one mistake by either boxer could change the outcome of the game.
Therefore, I would still favor on the underdog here although Canelo Alvarez has been so consistent lately.

Just like other boxing threads here, what about we make a voting here, can you add a poll OP?

Added as requested. I made the options more specific to make the predictions of poll participants clearer to others.

It is indeed odd but perhaps because this match is long overdue and in demand and the anticipation is very high among boxing fans, the trilogy has been continuously negotiated until it was finally sealed a few days ago. And it made the news.

But the excitement of this scheduled match will certainly subside if either of them will lose in his fight prior to this one. But then, according to CBS Sports:

Quote
...Alvarez could bypass the bout altogether and head straight towards the GGG trilogy fight in the fall.

Wtf?

Didn't Golden Boy just agree a deal for Canelo to fight Billy Joe Saunders? Or was that scrapped for some reason?

I am not interested in seeing a trilogy fight with GGG and Canelo, GGG is past his prime now and Canelo is probably about to peak—not a fair fight by any measure.

Golovkin only beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko by decision in a not so great performance, when a younger version of himself would have stopped him COLD.

NOT INTERESTED IN THE DAMN TRILOGY.

Not saying it wont be an interesting fight, GGG certainly won't get destroyed. But I expect a UD for Canelo in this one, though GGG still has a 30-40% chance of winning.

Not just them but the boxing fans as well. The past couple of matches were both classics in the history of boxing. Just as they were excellent boxing shows, both were also controversial, perhaps more controversial than any other recent boxing controversies.

I am not so sure this is the fight fans have been waiting for, it could be argued that the first fight was in fact a draw but the second fight in my opinion was won clearly by GGG and yet the win was awarded to Canelo, so it is obvious that unless GGG wins by KO most likely the fight will be given to Canelo, however I cannot deny the fights were entertaining and most likely it will bring a lot of money to both fighters so as an spectacle and as a way to make money it makes sense to both fighters to have the fight now rather than later.

When you are fighting the elite fighters it is very difficult to knock them out just like that and Alvarez and Golovkin are elite fighters and both are technically rock solid and both are volume strikers and the words you mentioned resembles Dana White as he usually says these words when you see a close fight or a robbery to finish the fight rather than going to the judges which is easily said and done :D.

Many promoters are chasing Golovkin, but DAZN has the best offer for him, 6 fight deal, good for him till he retire.

Quote
The deal is designed to last throughout the remainder of Golovkin's career. Golovkin will be 37 in April, and it was clear, he was looking to find the best deal to take him to the end of his time as a competitor in the sport. The deal with DAZN will reportedly pay him eight figures for each bout.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/brianmazique/2019/03/08/gennady-golovkins-dazn-deal-ideal-contract-next-fight/#d3b63db524d3

They could pay "step-aside" money to Saunders and Szeremeta so that they can go straight fight each other in September.

Glad that we now have a poll here, I voted Canelo winning by a unanimous decision, he is now a totally different fighter, he just won the cruiserweight title and with that he proves that he can take a punch from heavier category, the fight will be very exciting to watch the only way that can stop that excitement is the Corona Virus let's pray that the virus will be contain before the fight happens.

This fight still makes you excited? Really? It's your opinion so I respect it :D. It doesn't make any hype for me at all because their past rematch already gave us a clear conclusion. Imagine, if Canelo able to beat GGG before then what mkre of doing it again? If Golovkin really starve for victory, he must now think of a tactic that Canelo can't read. Well, in all fairness, they had a close fight last time so I understand that promoters are raising for a rematch. I just hope there will be a knockout this time to settle everything once and for all ;D.

Canelo is the favorites here, that is expected and it's fair line that most sports bettors would agree.
I believe that Canelo has the edge here, well majority believed as we can see on the odds provided above, but I would go for Golovkin and hoping for an upset.

Yes, odds like that are very tempting, it could change though as the fight gets closer.

Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez vs Billy Joe Saunders is a fight nearly every single boxing fan is desperate to see.

It's a clash of styles that's almost impossible to predict. On one side, you have the irresistible force that is Canelo, a ferocious combination of skill and power.

In the other corner, you have the man that many consider to be the finest scientific boxer in the both the middleweight and super middleweight divisions.

It really is a delicious recipe on paper and the fight was all set to be announced this week. The two world-class warriors were set to lock horns on Cinco de Mayo weekend in Las Vegas.

Sadly, the coronavirus outbreak crippling the world has brought a halt to pretty much all boxing and as such, the announcement of the fight has had to be postponed.

But the delay could play into the hands of British boxing fans. According to the Daily Mail, there is a serious chance that Canelo vs Saunders will be held in the UK in May 2021.

Canelo is all but certain to have his trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin in September, which means the Saunders bout at super middleweight cannot be re-scheduled for June, July or August.

If Golovkin really starve for victory, he must now think of a tactic that Canelo can't read.
Both are veterans of the sports with great teams (they've probably seen it all). Everyone has their own plan but executing it is another matter that's why when it comes to this match up, it will be down to better training and conditioning. GGG has to be at 100% to face a prime Canelo.

Alvarez is the favorite:
Not surprising. A good one for GGG though.

There are nine votes in and it's surprisingly close so far. I had Canelo by UD.

Have you watched the fight, i did not see a clear conclusion even after seeing multiple times as the fight is really close and hence it was not a clear decision. It is a stylistic match up and there is a demand for a rubber match and so is the reason the promoters have done that, if there was a clear conclusion i bet they will not generate any interest but that is not the case here, the first fight GGG clearly won the fight even though the judges messed up and the second fight was really close.

Yeah, there are a handful of sports analysts suggesting this. I completely understand this option because the primary reason I suppose why GGG signed a deal with DAZN is to face Canelo one last time and try to finally seal their unfinished business. We all know how much effort GGG has already put into chasing Canelo all this time. And it is also a significant factor that time is not in his favor.

Another probable reason is that the boxing fans are certainly more excited for this rematch than the two boxers' more immediate fights. Finally, the purse points to this match as the biggest priority.

But soon enough the Canelo would have a big margin on the voting, I respect both fighters so I am predicting now a draw for this fight.
GGG is the underdog but for sure he will not give Canelo an easy fight, the guy is a warrior, his chance is slim but he can win.

I was impressed with how Alvarez won the light heavyweight championship if he can do that kind of fight against Golovkin, Golovkin is big trouble, Kovalev the former champion can't handle his punching power, he is a much bigger than Alvarez, so I bet a big knock out win for Alvarez this time.

Kovalev did not prepared well for the fight against Canelo. There even rumours that he had lost that fight on purpose or simply sold his belt for a couple of millions us dollars :) Such rumours appeared after post fight interview where Kovalev was answering question with a smile. He didnt look disappointed at all...

Plus Kovalev keep changing his coaches, can come late for training or event dont come. His attitude preparing to that was fight was "not serious".

Majority of the voters on the poll voted for Alvarez either by unanimous decision or by knock out,  he is a very different fighter now after winning the light heavyweight belt and I think he can beat Golovkin this time, this third should be decisive for any fighter because the first two fights are very controversial, or else we will have a fourth fight.

IMO, the only way Gennady Golovkin can defeat Caneolo Alvarez is through knockout. The jury is extremely biased, and they will never allow an UD against Alvarez. This has happened two times before. GGG won both the fights, but the biased judges refused to acknowledge that. My prediction is that this time GGG will knock out Alvarez, to avenge the humiliation he had last time. My only concern is his age.

Exactly, a knockout is the only way for Golokvin to win this upcoming fight. Judges seems afraid of Golden Boy Promotion's top honcho Oscar Dela Hoya  ;D. IMHO, he can offset the age factor by training very very hard just like what Manny Pacquiao did. GGG maybe not be on his prime anymore but this guy have Canelo's number and hope he can land that lucky punch that will put Canelo to sleep.

Yep, that's the only way that GGG can win. And it will be a fitting for him as we all know that he was robbed specially on the first fight. However, Canelo Alvarez has one of the toughest chin, it hasn't been cracked before, even by a Light heavyweight like Kovalev, although there is an argument that he is no longer on his prime when he fought Alvarez.

I think Canelo's Endurance is way better than Golokvin's. I watched Canelo's fight and most of his opponents are tired and chasing some oxygen while he is just in control and focused. He showed no mercy every time he fight inside the ring but I know Golokvin is very prepared and focused about Canelo's preparation and style. But I think that in a boxing match, each boxers are vulnerable to a lucky punch because it depends on the body movement of the target. This fight is based on how strong your chin are, if you aren't trained to resist a strike in a chin then you are going to be defeated in just one click. I believe that Canelo will win this fight, it is more likely to be a Unanimous Decision or KO, I guarantee you that Canelo Alvarez will be the winning corner here.

It’s difficult to see a knockout these days hence I don’t expect Golovkin to walk-in and knock out Canelo that easily, however if he fires on all cylinders right from the start then he can definitely win by knockout. @Latviand there’s no doubt about Canelo’s endurance, but considering how Golovkin is preparing himself for this match it’s getting more difficult for me to choose a clear winner.

There's always luck when opportunities open and land that one knockout punch. This trilogy will be in the hands of the promoters on how they
will be able to bring audience and fans to still watch and support this fight.

Manny and GGG are not in the same weight class. But GGG can take a lot of inspiration from the Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman fight. In the beginning, the betting odds were heavily favoring Thurman, but then they changed slightly after huge number of Filipinos made their bets in favor of Manny. But very few really thought that the 40-year old Manny would be able to beat a young boxer such as Thurman.

Speaking of inspiration, GGG could also take a lot from Juan Manuel Marquez. Remember that fight, he knock out Manny in their last fight and if my memory serves me right, i think Marquez was 40 years old at that time even older than GGG.

Knocking out Canelo is a hill climb as this guy don't have a Amir Khan's chin  ;D but anything can happen positively for GGG if he train hard for this fight and threat this one as if this would be his last.

Both fights could have went either way, they were extremely close to be honest.

However, if you look back at the interviews surrounding the second fight (after the first draw), both fighters said they got robbed by getting a draw.

Both fighters also promised a knockout in the second fight in order to take the decision away from the judges, but we all know the second fight ended with a decision.

Third fight will probably go exactly the same way, both fighters will promise a KO, GGG will lose by a narrow decision once again.

The fights were close, I saw GGG winning the first fight by the smallest margin but to me the draw was fine as it was only needed to score one round differently to come up with the draw, however during the second fight the victory of GGG was more clear in my opinion and the fight should have being awarded to him but we know that is not what happened, so I do not see too much of a point for a third fight when we more or less know the result ahead of time and unless GGG wins by KO the decision will go to Canelo.

During both the fights, I was closely following the scores predicted by various media channels such as CNN and MSNBC. All of the major channels had GGG leading comfortably. But when the official scores from the judges came, it went in favor of Alvarez. I have seen this manytimes and I would say that what happened to GGG has happened to many talented boxers before. A few that comes to my mind right now are Jessie Vargas vs Khabib Allakhverdiev, Timothy Bradley vs Manny Pacquiao and Lennox Lewis vs Evander Holyfield.

Yeah, who wouldn't refused it? probably this fight could give the fighters another huge pay-day for both fighters. I'm not that interested on their immediate fights, those interim bouts are not going to generate them good money, and high risk low reward. We will just have to wait a little longer though, because of the current covid-19 situation. But I do hope that the fight will happen as schedule on September of this year. Gonna be one explosive fight for sure.
