Title: Very innovative BTC/ETH scam ongoing live, right now.
Post by: bryant.coleman on March 21, 2020, 03:13:44 PM
First the scammers set up a fake website and claimed that it is the official site of Elon Musk:

https://spacexbtc.site/

Then they bombarded the social media with promotions related to this scam.

They have a separate site, where the scam actually takes place:

https://spacexbtc.site/btc/index.html
https://spacexbtc.site/eth/index.html

There are thousands of tweets and facebook posts promoting this scam right now, most of them posted during the last 30 minutes.

We need to mass report and warn innocent users about this.

Noobs have already lost at least $2,500 worth of crypto:

https://etherscan.io/address/0xf269ebedcc1f430c4e487bd6218c33e86616f99c
https://www.blockchain.com/btc/address/1NWdpsVPi9xWpv4dNWKyDrN1it2qbH9ZSg

Edit: Someone just lost $6,200 worth of BTC: https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/47ac529236fdcbba7430dd533e3a3dc995701f32df6c6f75a30551b30e02787d

Someone please help. A lot of people are losing hard earned coins.

In social media you will find the most noobs and it's sad to see they lose their hard earned money. Anyway, in this board you are not going to see much traffic except people will just comment. May be you can use the proper formatting and move this to the scam accusation board.

What do you think that we can do except for repeatedly advising them not to fall these scams. Most of those who fall for such scams are greedy idiots. Only thing we can do now is reporting the website and the social media postings as scam

Right, there's a lot of scams going on that for a very long time.

@DroomieChikito maintains a thread about it [Warning] Phishing Cryptocurrency Website (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5197078.0)

Everyone can report it here: https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/?hl=en

In facebook the reporting really works and if it was done by more than one person then they look at it with series manner. However lately the service is slow due to corona phenomenon. I have an ad account which I have created to advertise one of my business and the sent a notification that the ads will longer to approve because of not many people working in their office.

We really can not do much except reporting and creating awareness against this scams.

Can you please link one tweet here? It's very unlikely that we can do something though because none of the noobs will believe us. Still, it would better if you share a link of tweet. If it's getting noticed by any #hashtags, we may tweet using same hashtags to alert people.

Everyone can report it here: https://safebrowsing.google.com/safebrowsing/report_phish/?hl=en
They aren't getting any of their visitor from google and reporting there wouldn't bring any benefit I guess.

I reported a large number of such tweets to Twitter. And it looks as if these accounts are suspended. One example here:

https://twitter.com/RomanPartatous/status/1241368373218250752

The reaction from a few users:

https://twitter.com/DrMrMilton/status/1241375906259554304

Edit: Now it looks as if the phishing site has been taken down. But sadly, before that the scammers were able to steal $11,000 worth of crypto.

Very sad it is not first project like this and not last, where are they coming from ? I can help to spread awareness on social media but as you know sometime it helps other time not so much. I just tried to open their website but i can't, their website is blocked.

Am I surprise Scammers are trying to set this up? NO.
With what is going on in the space now, some few bad people will try to use the situation to scam people, when you want to donate to any cause please try as much as possible to verify where the money is actually going because there are a lot of people that truly need this money but the middle man scam will proven them from reaching them

I think there is a board for this accusations. You should have created this topic in there;

What's new? If some people saw an opportunity to take advantage, they will!. Even the myetherwallet had phishing site. Scammers will took everything by any means necessary. This is the real world. What can we do right now is be alert and aware of the things that can protect us from the scammers. Im sure that this will become more and more aggressive cause of the world situation right now. You can also report this to scam accusations if you like.

Sadly, the most vulnerable people likely don't visit this forum or other social platforms about Bitcoin, they probably bought it and keep it on exchange without doing any further research. This means that if you have friends who are like that, it's your duty to inform them about this scam or better just educate them about scams and other dangers in general, so they won't fall victim in the future.

Scammers really are sophisticated these days they can easily build a good looking site also add Wikipedia pages or create article that Elon musk really is in to Cryptocurrency and planning to launch a project. I've also been a victim of these scammers, they sent me a suspicious link and without thinking, i've clicked and manage to infect my pc, i quickly reformat it.

Help? Most people won't learn. They just can't use others story and learn from that. They need to encounter some sort of bad luck first. Again, most people won't learn from their first experience; they keep falling for scams upon scams. I don't wish anyone bad luck of falling for scams but, if that's what it'll take for you to be careful and mindful of the things you don't then that's OK by me.

Facebook and other social media sites that allows sponsorship or ad boosting must monitor this kind of trickery. There are also these "mining" websites that shows on my newsfeed telling people that they can mine while at home.

I've reported them but they keep on appearing. It must be the algorithm of facebook and it should be addressed to the team who monitors the ads but needless to say, we can only report them and handle it on their own.

Sometimes I wonder how did people who have more than $1k worth of bitcoin can fall for trick like this? Even the name of the website is dubious at best and as someone who holds a lot of money, they should've known that Elon aren't doing something scammy like this.

Most ads network auto-publish their ads and then say "we are not responsible for the content", so it sucks. They should have a dedicated team for this instead.

The amount of money doesn't necessarily correlate to intelligence. There's a saying that "A fool and his money are soon parted".

On a related note, this kind of tweet is amusing:

you can not know that.
this is also another step in their scam, they deposit some of their own money in the same addresses to make their scam look more realistic as if others have already trusted them and made the deposits.

Who (except total newbies) would trust a website with such .site domain extension?
Who (except total newbies and very naive people) would think that the real Elon Musk would run BTC or ETH giveaways and lotteries on social media? What's the point for him to run such giveaways?
"Donate 0.3 ETH in order to get 2-3 ETH back."-This sounds like the simplest and oldest scam ever.
There's nothing new and innovative in this, except using the name of Elon Musk.

Its not that logn time ago to see a scam trick like this, maybe just two days ago saw another post about a method that works like this. I dont know when people gonna stop with their wrong doings. In spite of helping other people in the time of crisis, they just really dont care whoever will be victimized by their shits.

There's nothing new and innovative in this, except using the name of Elon Musk.
Agreed. Elon Musk is famous and those dipshits thought they can used such fashion using famous names with this. But if the loss is true according to OP then they are good actors and performers that need to taken care soon.

Well, if the moderation is well decentralized, scams like that would be quickly taken care of.
Skillful, anonymous and randomly chosen moderators should be able to delete such things very quickly when rules are broken in well decentralized social media

What I don't understand is how can a person even decide to invest big amounts without doing thorough prior research.
I guess we call them 'noobs' for a reason. Besides that, if you are holding that big amount to invest in something then you must actually know what you are doing, else you are not worth holding that kind of money.

Anyway it's good that OP has mentioned it here. I hope atleast people read this post before investing in any such sites.

When I tried to access the website just now, Google Chrome made a red huge notification that the website is fake, and did not let me through. So it's great that people like you have raised concerns and the website seems to be blocked by Google. It was quite a fast reaction because I remember a Binance impostor scam about a month ago that's been going on for about a week before it was shut down.
The scam looks so typical that it's indeed hard to believe people still fall for that stuff. I suppose it means that people need serious anti-scam education which they lack.

What is you concept of a decentralized social media. Who will moderate the contents?
When you have a body who can alter the database without any instruction or they do not need to explain it to anyone, they will abuse. In the current structure of facebook they have people (moderators) who are legally bound to explain their jobs to their superior.

I don't think those transactions are 'true' and this is an old scam strategy nothing innovative.
they first make an obvious phishing site like this, then ask you to send fund, when you check the address to see how much they collected, you get surprised by the sum collected so you think it's legit. I remember one scam had like 100 eth in hours, don't know how they do that and I am not convinced that people fall for this type very easily. Overall, we should all report it fast and it will be tagged.

This was an example of the tweets, used to popularize the scam in social media (notice the tweet using a fake account of Jeff Tiedrich):
