Title: Corona Virus crypto related extortion email
Post by: TravelMug on March 22, 2020, 04:18:20 AM
And when we thought that we have seen everything from cyber-criminals taking advantage of the NCOVID-19 pandemic, from Phishing Emails, Rats, Trojans, Malwares, Viruses (no pun indented), and Fake donation websites, comes a new wave of attack, this time it is thru extortion email. Similar to sextortion emails from the past.

Asking for $4000 worth of BTC.

And you have to admire their imagination here, claiming that they're going to infect you and your family with the corona virus. LMAO.

Don't believed on those cyber criminals, I'm pretty sure they don't have access to your email accounts or even your passwords.

Quote
What to do?

    - Don’t send any money. It’s all a pack of lies.
    - Don’t be scared. In scams like these, the crooks don’t have any data on you, let alone details about all
your family members and where they live.
    - Don’t think of replying. It’s tempting to contact the crooks, just in case, but they have nothing to sell;
you have nothing to buy; and by contacting them you are just giving them another chance to scare
      you into making a mistake.
    - Let people know about this scam. Make sure others don’t fall for this horrible scam either. Let’s face it,
we already have enough to worry about at the moment.

They probably have templates for these kinds of emails and just edits to go with what's currently happening (NCOVID-19 in this case). Funny how the sender also says search on google if you don't know how to buy bitcoin ;D

If we look at the threat, we laugh out loud when reading it because we know this is not true and some kind of scam. But do you know that there are actually people who fell from this scam? I pity those people who are often fell to this kind of fraud. that's why every false threat like this should be posted here and prevent others to become a victim with such a scam. I agree with you OP, this might be old, but certain people are vulnerable because of a lack of knowledge in the world of internet and not to mention the paranoia caused by this epidemic to the people.

Im not sure even the slightest mind or beginner can fall for this. The lines are very suspicious and you from youself can guess that this scheme or method is a scam but for the concern of safety much better ignore it unless you really done something or has an enemy.

The words like you need to pay me sounds like a threat that created for an acting. If you dont have such I mentioned above, avoid or ignored messages will be good place for trashes like this.

Corona virus reall did a lot of scam acivity. Im excited to see another day where these craps stop the usage of corona on their hoax activity.

Really it’s same old, same old. They’ve just added another fear factor into the email (which is pretty absurd). I wonder if they tailor the message for different geographical regions. Having or purchasing 4k$ in BTC is not in the pocket range for that many regions (likely, unless the email was targeted to people related to crypto, not that many would even know where to begin with to obtain BTC in 24h).

Thats not good at all. It means your data leaked somewhere.
This email from topic author have no common sense at all. How can cyber criminal using cyber extortion want to infect not in cyber way but with physical way with coronavirus. That make absolutely no sense at all.
I mean if people fall for "nigerian prince scam" or "indii refund scam" they would probably not apply any logic here also.

So coronavirus can travel and transfer via IP address as well. :D

Even if you got corona infection,no need to panic and don't lose your self-confidence which itself can damage your immune system. This is just the flu and can damage your respiratory tracks and lungs but it can be cured in real quick if you found the existence in early stages.

Oh no, he's gonna infect you with CoRona virus. I think he forgot to paste his BTC wallet address. Oh, I think I can help with mine. Hehe.
This is an outdated scam method the scammer is trying to use. Nice try :).
Tell him you can also help him double his BTC.

snip..
I think it's very funny, how to spread covid-19 from the internet?? :D at times like this, we must be more careful, especially in donations, if you have more money and want to donate you should go to the official website of the government in your country or the world like WHO or globalgiving.org (https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/coronavirus-relief -fund/)

Maybe he's a scammer. He is using the threat of the Corona virus to scam people. This is an old scam technique. But he is currently trying to scam using the fear has in people. Since he is requesting money through BTC, he must be emailing to those who involved with the crypto.

The email was digital but his threat requires him to do something that he needs to be physically present, which if you are looking at it realistically you will see that this is probably one of the lamest and unrealistic ways to extort a person. Chasing him or getting back at the email sender isn't really the best solution out there but what the article said is right and just literally avoiding and not believing the threat is the best way to deal with these email extortions. They won't stop on what they are doing but at least they won't add you to one of their victims so being realistic and practicing proper internet etiquette is the best way to avoid and not be fooled by these scams.

I can see their ego the dedication to scam people because of hunger maybe or greed again. This won't end until the world change really. Just look at the reality that is what we are going to solve the root of it instead of a temporary solution. Thank you for sharing us that info anyway
