Title: Bitcoin explained in a simple way - feedback needed
Post by: odb36 on March 22, 2020, 02:08:55 PM
Many people are getting interested in Bitcoin and try to understand more about it. However, when you search about what is Bitcoin there is no simple explanation of it. Only technical terminology and walls of text which need a lot of time to go through. What about non-technical, low-computer literate people which are the vast majority of the world population? They will have a very hard time understanding what is Bitcoin, how it works and various other basic questions if searching on their own, right now. We need to explain this complex technology much simpler and accessible way for them.

We need a website that explains what is Bitcoin to non-technical people who have no idea or has never heard of it.

As a UX researcher, I decided to use my skills to make a very easy and understandable explanatory website. Thus, bitcoinmakesense.com (http://bitcoinmakesense.com) was created. The aim of the site is to answer Bitcoin questions using plain language with supporting graphics and videos. The site is still very new and needs a lot more work.

My plan is not just to create the content and leave it. I will test it and iteratively improve it using various research methods. I'll use a lot of qualitative methods like interviews and user tests which are great for educational content.

I'll be very happy if you can help me by reviewing it and giving some feedback. Do you think something could be explained better? Is there something that you would add or remove? How would you improve it?

Your opinion is very important and will help increase Bitcoin public awareness!

Any good explanations of Bitcoin's frequently asked questions that works well with your friends will be more than welcomed.

Thank you.

There is no simple explanation on bitcoin, I think. It is always complicated for beginners. They have to begin from scratch and slowly crawl before they gradually understand how bitcoin works.

Some documents:
- Bitcoin Explained Guide (https://github.com/horizontalsystems/Bitcoin-Explained-Guide)
- Mastering Bitcoin (https://github.com/bitcoinbook/bitcoinbook)

Let me be honest, I cannot finish reading all of it. It could be because English is not your main language. Maybe you can express your thoughts better if you improve your English. I suggest that you also add a link to the Bitcoin whitepaper https://bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf

I always like the sites with such content. I agree understanding Bitcoin is difficult due to lots of technical jargon involved. You did a good job by writing an easy overview on Bitcoin in home page.

However, there is a fine line between translating information into easy language and spoiling information that it becomes misleading. You did a fine job to keep information relevant except one thing that I noticed i.e. the use of expression 'Bitcoin Password'. This expression is misleading and doesn't make any sense. Initially you used Bitcoin Password for the private key and later you also used the same expression when you were explaining about mining. In mining explanation, this specific line was the most misleading one:

All miners compete to guess the block password

It doesn't make any sense. There is no password. Please re-examine this and improve your explanation. Except this, you did good job. Good Luck!

At the very beginning, you have used some terms which are related to bitcoin's price which must not be presented such a way; not at least at the beginning of the article. It doesn't make sense what your website intents to.

You must never say it's a good idea to store bitcoin cryptocurrency exchange or trading site or online wallet. Remember, "Not your keys, not your coins."

You said, "A password which can spend them."
It is Private Key.

On average, you must have to do some more background research for yourself. Some of the information is wrong.

Thanks Yogee. You're right, I'm not native English speaker. Will definitely get somebody to rewrite it in a more natural way (paying in BTC ;)

Thanks for the feedback RapTarX, webricks. I used password instead of private key so it's more understandable for general population who have no idea about Bitcoin and cryptography.

I'll definitely rethink on whether to rename it, but I'm trying to avoid cryptographic terms like Public/private key. The majority of population don't know about it, but at the same time it differs with other explanations. So, what do you think? Let's see if there is other opinions on this. Otherwise I'll test it with users.

but I'm trying to avoid cryptographic terms like Public/private key.
That won't help you achieve your goal. You have to introduce the cryptographic terms with your readers but there's easy way to do that. You can put a paragraph below of your article as "Abbreviation" and explain all the cryptographic terms used in the article. That will be more user friendly and readers won't not be misguided as well.

Great work. I really liked the whole concept of the website. Here some notes that you may take into consideration:
- Does there a real need to use cookies? I don't prefer installing anything in my browser just to visit a static website.
- As the website manager is not natively English, why not translate the content to more language to reach more large community.
- This description doesn't look appropriate and may cuse more confused opinions about the bitcoin protocol for non-technical users:
Quote
Users can have a private Bitcoin address and password
You can open a Bitcoin account online or through a program not connected to the internet. It creates a Bitcoin address where people can send you coins, and a password, with which you can spend them. Similar to banks, where they give you IBAN or account number and a password.

It is extremely hard to guess a Bitcoin password.
Maybe you should edit some terms without going deep in tech analysis.

Thank you for the feedback coupable.

- There are cookies because the website uses Google Analytics and Hotjar
- I'll definitely translate it to different languages but after I'm confident that the content is easy to understand. It might take a year until its fully ready.
- Good point on the technical details, I'll rewrite it

I feel happy when you can unleash your potential and expertise to help others know or understand about bitcoin in a simple way or explanation. Creating a website and facilitating people to understand bitcoin in a simple language in my opinion is the right step in building your new business.

But does someone who wants to know about bitcoin now still need a special website so they will easily understand it?
When we type "what is bitcoin" in a google search, we are immediately directed to a website like "Wikipedia" or other sites. On a website like that someone will get information about bitcoin and its technology. As for the next stage, we are also directed to reach the bitcointalk.org forum and this forum is a place where all types of discussions related to bitcoin are discussed.

This forum is a place where everyone can ask, understand, discuss, and everything about bitcoin so I dont think there should be a special website other than the bitcointalk.org forum to facilitate people knowing about bitcoin with language and simple explanations, but I am not blaming your current creative efforts and ideas. Good luck with your efforts and I hope this step can help others to understand about bitcoin. Nothing is easy and everyone has to go through stages and that is the process.

Giving direct answers to all the questions may not contribute to explaining what is Bitcoin correctly, but clarifying the concepts in the way of expressions will be very useful. I hope that you will continuously improve your site and focus on simplicity and series.
As for understanding things more deeply, it is best that you infer the educational video provided by https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJWCJCWOxBYSi5DhCieLOLQ.

There are also, some videos with some cartoon that may be useful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCi3X3AbgT4

you think the term "private key" is hard to understand because you know it is related to cryptography subject. but someone who has no knowledge of cryptography will read the word and interpret it literally:
a "private key" is a "key" that is "private" and keys open locks/secrets.
it is a very simple and descriptive term.

Yeah, but imagine a 45 years old brick layer who uses computer once in a month and has asked his kid to open him up a Facebook account because it's too complex for him. Will this guy understand password or public key better? I'm targeting non-computer literate nocoiners.

I don't think you can synonymize the privatekey with the password. You want to teach non-technical people that one day they will use a wallet software that produces private keys automatically and multi-crypto or exchange wallets that use custom passwords.

Remember that private keys can't be reset/changed. You better add learning material about the differences between the two things above in the "Wallets" and/or "Exchanges" tab.
Btw, your site display is very well.

Go for it then!

The problem is that everyone tries to simplify the explanation of BTC but few to none actually achieve that. I had countless encounters with new-to-crypto people and it's so damn hard to explain something you understand very well to someone who's never heard of/used it before. It's like trying to simplify rocket science explanation to someone who barely knows the basics of science..

Answering bitcoin answers is very helpful. Explaining about bitcoin is not an easy task as there is no simple explanation. Those who are teaching or sharing about bitcoin should explain it as how it should be explain. The whitepaper would come in handy too. Any way of explaining about is your own choice whether it's a text, infographics or even a video. There is a song too.
