Title: How was the first cryptocurrency wallet invented?
Post by: 415jeremy on March 29, 2020, 07:08:02 AM
There are so many crypto wallets on market now. But cryptocurrency itself is stored in a ledger. I'm wondering who came out with the first crypto wallet project? When did it happen?

The first wallet was part of the original Bitcoin Core (v0.1) software, released by Satoshi on January 8th, 2009. You can read the release announcement/email here: https://satoshi.nakamotoinstitute.org/emails/cryptography/16/

The very first bitcoin wallet is the Bitcoin-Qt, it was created by satoshi and release on year 2009, so badically it was created when bitcoin was created, the bitcoin and the bitcoin wallet was relased on the same year, well that it should be.

So far the first cryptocurrency is bitcoin, even, not only the first bitcoin wallet but the first crypto wallet ever is bitcoin core. Thanks for the link you sent, it was so helpful for me to know when and how bitcoin core started.

Not exactly accurate by name.

Basically the first name of the satoshi client was Bitcoin, then it changed with Bitcoin-QT and changed again with the version 0.9.0 to Bitcoin core to reduce confusion between Bitcoin-the-network and Bitcoin-the-software (https://bitcoin.org/en/release/v0.9.0#rebranding-to-bitcoin-core)

The old days of Bitcoin, like when Bitcoin wasn't BTC but BC  :) even the logo

There's nothing strange here, a wallet is just a client, and without a client a network can't exist. In fact, Bitcoin network consists of these wallets talking to each other and maintaining the ledger. All the rules of Bitcoin and the blockchain are a part of the first Bitcoin wallet. Later other people begun separating the node functionality from wallet functionality by creating light clients that don't contribute to the network.

There are couple of older cryptocurrencies (digital currency) that predates Bitcoin, HashCash is one of the most recognized among them.
Some older ones didn't used a similar approach as HashCash or Bitcoin and IMO shouldn't be called "cryptocurrency".

If OP wants us to google search and read a certain online article that's just been posted, he's succeeded  :P
