Title: Wallet question
Post by: PointHope on April 02, 2020, 01:01:59 AM
I'm having issues with two of my Ledger Nano s being stuck on bootloader.
It seems to be a clitch with Win10,
I fixed it once by plugging into my older Win7 computer.
But I made the mistake of updating the Ledger live and now Win7 is now longer supported.
I loaded ledger live on the android device but I need a special cable to connect.

I wanna replace the clitchy Win10 machine with a Mac but I gotta wait. I also gotta wait for the cable to run the new ledger android.

In the meantime I cannot access my ledger and need to use a wallet.
With the recent dip in price I'm buying again and have to store them. I'm currently  using one or more of the following 4 wallets
What is better or good? And why?
Jaxx Liberty wallet
Samourai wallet
Blockchain wallet
Exodus wallet.

I'm really pissed off with the window10 POS.

Thanks in advance for any tips or advice using these wallets.

Sorry for the wallet mishap, I hope you get access to it soon. I was told you can carry out offline transaction on Samourai wallet, which you will need internet later for the confirmation. A lot of persons have praises for electrum wallet, sometimes judging it as the best for mobile wallet and it's Segwit enabled. Blockchain wallet is said to always have bug, I am a witness to some friends wallet been hacked off their blockchain wallet, they had use SMS option as a 2FA, well they should have used google authentication.

I support this. I have used Blockchain wallet and they're buggy. I have used Exodus for a few times but using it as a storage of your bitcoins isn't a good idea. I would use Samourai or Wasabi than them if you don't prefer Electrum. But Electrum is the ideal and will be recommended by most.

For such bugs about Ledger wallets, inform this to their subreddit.

Have you tried using Electrum to access your Ledger?

Regarding your alternative wallet, don't use the blockchain wallet. I personally use Samourai and it's good enough. Use this list to see which one fit your purpose https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet?step=5&platform=android.

Just you can use temporary the Blockchain wallet until you fix the Ledger Nano S wallet. If you want to a mobile app, look for the Bitpay wallet

Actually I have two Blockchain wallets, the second because of the payment requirement for my 2 pack nano s purchase. The KYC aspect is very disconcerning. So I rarely use my Blockchain wallets.

I'm really hoping to gain some practical functionality over the Ledger nano s. I see it is pretty foking secure, I can't even get into it. The coins are there, I'm not really worried, but it is not useable.
This may be a deliberate fault by Win10, and Ledger is doing the best they can to provide security.

One of the problems is me, being a Boomer who knows the old Windows 3.11. But lately this moving so fast that my freaking head is spinning.

Fark!

This alternative wallets you listed are great, however since you needed some wallet  to use before you fix your ledger, i'd advice you to try out ATOMIC WALLET. it's a non-custodial wallet available for every pc versions and mobile and it's totally free. Atomic Wallet is the most complete all-in-one cryptocurrency wallet in the entire market as it's Multicurrency feature supports virtually every blockchain out there i.e you can store more than 500 coins/tokens.

It has other functionalities like, the Atomic swap where you can carry out exchange of assets through decentralized atomic technology. Within atomic wallet apps,  you can also purchase major cryptocurrency using your bank card and lastly, it is incorporated with 2 instant exchange plugins ( shapeshift and changelly) for you to exchange cryptos without going to these exchanges. You should try it out

Before going any further, make sure you have your 24 word seed phrase accessible if you need it.

Have you followed Ledger's troubleshooting guide to get your devices out of the bootloader? See here: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360003117594-Troubleshoot-firmware-update

If you have managed to get your devices out of bootloader, then you should try interacting with them using Electrum instead of Ledger Live. This should work just fine on both Windows 7 and Windows 10. Again, there are instructions you can follow here: https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum. If you really want to use Ledger Live, then you could download Linux and boot to it from a live CD or USB stick, and try running Ledger Live on that instead.

If you really can't get in to them and desperately need to access your coins, then you will need to recover from your seed phrase. I would also suggest using Electrum. Be aware that once your seed phrase has been entered in to a software wallet, then it is no longer secure and you should set up a new wallet on your Ledger devices when you can.

PointHope, whichever move you decide to make, do not enter your seed in any other wallet - just use Ledger with Electrum, and you will be fine until you fix problem in Windows 10. To do that try to update W10, then uninstall Ledger Live and delete his folder and try again. Few days ago I try Ledger Live on my W10, and it works without problems with Nano S&X.

Can't say I've had any real issues with Windows10+Ledger Live+Ledger Nano S

Are the glitches you are seeing with it stuck on the bootloader when you're attempting to update the firmware on your Nano S devices? Or was it just when you attempted to connect your Nano S to the computer to use it normally (ie. making a transaction)? ???

More and more people are complaining Ledger Nano S wallet and recent updates.
It looks like they messed up something, as I doubt all issues I hear is because of user mistakes.

The device gets stuck after the update and following the instructions to start device in bootloader.
Device starts and gets stuck as the win10 ledger application fails to acknowledge the device...

As I said it all worked fine on an older win7 machine, right until I made the mistake of udating the ledger live app., which no longer works on win7.

As for my win10 machine I know there is some glitch there.

Still waiting to get a cable for use of the android device to connect.

I suspect many of the update issues are in part the complications of trying to accomodate the wide variety of altcoins apps.
The older nano s probably isn't suited for handling a ton of different coin as it lacks the memory capacity.
I have four coin on mine, btc, ltc, dash, zec...
It is all very frustrating.
I'd be currions if mac users have these issues with the ledger live software too?

Sounds like a driver/USB issue with Windows. Can sometimes be a bit of a bugger to diagnose and fix. I assume you've already tried the "usual" fixes of plugging into a different USB port, don't use a USB hub etc and/or uninstalling all the Ledger USB devices using something like USBDeview (https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html)? ???

According to the fancy new Ledger Manager in Ledger Live 2.0... BTC is 40Kb, while LTC, Dash and ZEC are only 4Kb... so that would take up around 52Kb of the 160Kb storage on the Ledger Nano S... like this:

It's a shame that you're having so many issues with it :-\ I've found the new update to have some really nice UI/UX improvements... even if I am a bit disappointed with the continued lack of certain features (like coin control etc).

Have you tried updating Windows 10 and then uninstall Ledger Live+delete all files from his installation folder? Also do you have the latest firmware in Nano S? Many use the W10 and Ledger without any problems (this includes myself) so the problem may be software or even hardware in your PC. An alternative for BTC is certainly the Electrum desktop, a completely simple and secure solution.

Hey, thanks all for the tips and help..

I finally got the bootloader/update issue to resolve, after reloading the ledger live app for third time...

Kinda klunky app imho. But it works

I do like the Electrum wallet btw...

Cheers...PH
