Title: Crypto Holders, Beware the Covid-19 Scammers
Post by: OGEOS on April 17, 2020, 10:06:53 AM
There's no denying that this is a wild time that we are currently living in, and during wild times like these people tend to get desperate. Unfortunately desperate people combined with panic create the perfect conditions for scammers. The FBI has officially warned traders that there will be a rise in “cryptocurrency-related fraud schemes”.

Here is why using caution is best practice for crypto holders amid Covid-19 scams: https://coins.newbium.com/post/30356-crypto-holders-beware-the-covid-19-scammers

Yes there are more crypto charity organisation right now after the pandemic has started I am really not sure much true it is, I am not saying all are scammers but yes there are people's who take advantage of the situation as well.

Also I went through an article where FBI clearly states that any crypto donor who believes they might be a scammer should first verify about the charity and it's organisation, it's so indicative of human nature so be careful guys.

Given that case. FBI should have a method on how to bust these scammers. Using covid19 as a tool is not funny anymore. I dont know why these people think of it as their way of scamming. Dont they have conscience in their doing? If this continue cryptocurrency will be flagged as as worst industry for investment related.

Do you have idea OP if those people have accumulated funds from the victim? FBI should be able to identify and sort out for this.

The FBI should make an action because the fraudsters are leveraging the fears of people during the pandemic to steal their assets. It's unbelievable because it is no different, they never missed a chance of fooling people. Even in times of crisis, even though they know that plenty of people are suffering and dying from the virus. The majority of them even use fake donations to make money. As an outcome, people are losing their assets for believing it.

I want to believe that traders that often visit this platform shouldn't be easily scammed with this covid-19 stuffs going around.  We have been warned some weeks ago of some unscrupulous elements that is taking the advantage of this pandemic to scam people by creating some fake coronavirus coins.  Unfortunately, some fell victim before the developers finally disappeared.  We should just take more caution and steer clear of any donations or trading relating to this.

Never try to donate our money into the suspicious party especially for people who have said so many claims about the covid token. I have seen so many scam tokens that used it to get the hype.
Just try to refuse any PM that will come to you. I mostly got PM from scammers on the telegram

That's the best thing everyone should learn, how to know a scam attempt and avoid it! Because whatever we do, we can't make stop scammers! They will find one or another way to scam people! So, the best thing everyone should do, educate themselves by learning from mistakes! Greedy nature is very harmful in every sector of a man's life!

Yeah, scammers do not spare any news or event at all and they take it as an opportunity to rob people especially when people are looking for alternative income opportunity or want another source of income, these people unfortunately are the easy targets of the scammers, we should be careful and do all the basics right to avoid scammers.

Yes it is true there are many cases of fraud that occurred either in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak or before Covid-19. In this case we must always be vigilant to protect assets. We must protect the private key as well as possible so that someone does not know and apply security to the trading account. Always be aware that Scammers will always be present in any industry

Those fraud schemes were even there since a few years ago. Us, who are aware of this can easily avoid them but the newbies will have a hard time determining for these frauds because they don't have experience or they don't have someone to guide them and tell them which is the fraud and which is not. In these times, it's ok to avoid being greedy too. We're all in need and we want to have profit but being greedy can lead you to become a victim.

It is very risky if donating to organizations or individuals who have no reputation because it is very high the possibility of getting scam or the funds we donate are not given to help fight covid-19. So the best way is to ignore any fundraising that you think is not from a well-known organization and always check whether the website/anything is official.

We should always be careful investing in new projects. Current pandemic situation has added fuel to scam industry. Using the the current situation, scammers are targetting investors which are new in this industry. Covid-19 has also increased awareness in cryptocurrencies more than before.
This is the time, we should be very strict selecting any project for investment.

This is the crucial time of our lives, we should be careful for whom we're dealing with, because scammers is everywhere. Online virtual world with anonymous individuals will find any ways to intrude on their potential victims, that's why it's more important to be vigilant. Fraudulent activities will arise and take advantage of the covid-19 pandemic, just to use it as their escape goat to gain sympathy like crypto donations for whatsoever reason.

That is the purpose of these Covid related cryptocurrencies they invite you to invest or donate because they will share the profit on the victims if I will donate I prefer donating it to my localities who is also badly hit by the COVID 19 virus and not to an unknown unorganized people, people should research we have projects that are like that now.

During this time a lot of people will tend to scam more and you need to protect yourself when participating in this market. At telegram there are millions of people who intend to scam by inviting investment projects and it will only cost you money so be careful. In addition, the world is now very chaotic and hundreds of millions of people are unemployed making the situation worse.
I am the victim of work termination, I feel bad now but fortunately, I know cryptocurrency at least I can have money from daily trading or from investing. Corona Virus is worst, it can destroy an economic country with several months.

The scammers have always been there, before the coronavirus came in my telegram and this forum either have a thousand of scammers. But you have to know, you won't be scammed if you know them and now the characteristic of their way.

The most and an old trick scammer to scam the people is they will ask you to deposit money and you will get double money when you have sent it. If you find this situation you have to ignore it immediately. There is no free money, I mean you have to spend your effort even your capital to gain money as you want.

The scammers will always try to use the moment to get the money from people. We are in the pandemic, and the scammers seem already moves to trick the people and asking them to donate with them. The worst thing the scammers can do is sending emails to the victim to send some money to them because they use WHO in the email. It is our responsibility always to be careful from the scammers, not just because that is our money, but it is about how we can protect crypto as well, so people out there don't think that crypto will only be used for illegal things.

Cryptocurrency scammers might not be too easy for FBI or the police to catch and punished appropriately because of anonymity of such transactions and many countries around the world haven't legalised cryptocurrency because of the effects they think it will have on the banking sector.

The pandemic will make us all struggle financially too, so I guess donating is only good if you have enough funds.
It's expected that we will see fake charities now, but if we are educated and we know how to verity if the company or the site asking are legitimate, then we should not face any problem.

For me, the best way to offer some help is to just donate in your country to a legal entity that's mission is to help people during this crisis, that way we can ensure that our money is safe and it's spent at the right purpose.

Fired? Im not sure about that, cause they are asked to stay at home but this is not termination but a precaution for spreading the virus. No salary yes, but job is not remove from their status cause its totally unfair to get remove from a work because of this virus.

I do hope FBI can bust these people. If you are using forum, you are already aware of some of these scamming right? So better stay away from any giveaway or money related about covid cause we are not sure if those are legit.

They should provide actual proof that they really donating this money. Many unknown organization take advantage to this kind of situation and better to give in local government unit rather than online organization with unknown identity. That right, it's better for us to make sure that the money we donating will go in the right hands and together let's fight this virus. I hope it will end soon because it's affects a lot of people especially the poor people.

It's easy for FBI to catch these scammers but the main problem is every country has its own juridiction. That means the report must be created inside of the country to make sure the police will be processing the report.
This has already discussed so many times and we need people that also based on that country to create a report.

Scammers and fraudsters would take this pandemic event as an advantage in auch a way that there are many fund raisers asking for a donations and organizations that promises to help affected people because of covid19. In this case, we should only choose organizations that are trusted not just receiving funds and use this tragedy as their bait.

You are right, we should be very careful with the Fundraising company because they are asking for donations and without googling about the company it is not a wise decision to send money directly to them. Scam people will always the cause the raise funds and we need to be very careful with those companies.

Yes, indeed many organizations have been created to help all those affected by Co-19, but those of us who receive assistance must also be clever in seeing and analyzing the body of the organization, so that we are not trapped in things we don't want.

Yes, the conditions are indeed like that, but what we have to understand is that everything done by someone is clear for personal interests and benefits, because now it is very difficult to find money, so some people use different techniques for profit.

There are signs, I'm sure if they are researching, they'll detect easily if such thing is scam or not.
Even if only people restricting themselves from donating randomly to a random website but instead only through verified charity foundation it will easily solve the problem. These scammers known for outsmarting the people who are vulnerable so instead of wasting time people should just do what the government recommends them in term of selecting charity foundation.

Scammers use all kinds of methods to deceive their victims, including utilizing the current crisis situation by opening fake donations
to victims. Therefore be careful if you want to donate funds to help victims of the corona virus. Choose a trusted place for donations,
because scammers are everywhere. Do not let our funds enjoyed by scammers.

That's why they have a community forum like bitcointalk where warnings like what the OP has done is been posted daily and encourage to become a normal practice. Total abstaining from donating online via cryptocurrency is the most effective way to avoid falling victim to these scams or only trust already well established organization like exchanges, wallet providers, gambling sites etc that are organizing this charity donations to assist those protecting us from the virus or affected patient.

These scams can't easily be eliminated from the industry since it's an industry built on decentralization, putting the security of our funds in our hands. Every individual becomes responsible for safeguarding their funds and no centralized system to rely on.

I have saw this case in 1 month ago, and I think people know about this. Just don't give any funds for donation about covid-19.
I know not every websites is fake, but I really don't want my funds is on fraudster
it is better to keep the money for self and own family...
we don't know exactly where the money we are donating, I think the entire government has spent a lot of money, so we don't need to be a hero anymore if we ourselves still need money in this plague condition.

Donating only if anyone has enough funds is not a good approach at this point many smaller countries are struggling with this so it doesn't matter how much one donates every dollar is worth during the times like this so people don't trust anyone with their kind-hearted hard-earned money  they can directly donate to the government public measures fund or some nearby organization who do good

You are absolutely right with your article, many fake charity organizations and Ponzi like schemes are out there hunting for people to defraud best like you said is for all to be very careful so as not to fail for scammers. I have seen lots of them and many that even promised huge rewards. I have also seen alot now promising ETH and all. We should be careful this period anyways.

When you talk about how the scammers shouldn't be using this to their advantage because there is so much misery going on and so forth, I am quite flabbergasted because these are scammers, these people steal money from you indirectly, make you give your money to them instead of actually pick pocketing, which means these people have always had immoral ethics and expecting them to behave during a crisis like this means you do not really know them.

I mean if they were people who would care about stuff like this, they would also care about the people who they scam and they would quit doing things like this, but they don't, they might be stealing from a person who has a sick kid and not enough money and invests with the hopes that they might make enough money to cover their sick child's surgery, and yet scammer still takes it without a care, that is what a scammer is.

You do not even need to go far. Just check some of the project that are created about covid19 with the hope of getting money from investors. A lot of individual are coming up with story about donation to support the people without deep information about how money that will be donated will be spent. Which is the reason why we all need to be careful at this moment

Yes. Being a member of this kind of community is very beneficial, you will be updated from those existing scams and the new schemes that they are doing to scam people.
That's very well said, each of us should have our own precautionary measures to protect ourselves too.

Scammers are everywhere but with this pandemic I guess many will victimize of scams because this is good opportunity for them to earn money easily by faking donations, scam coins like corona coin, selling fake alcohols, over pricing, just like that.

The scammers are using this pandemic and they posted about they have people who needs help they use that like opportunity to them to scan people. Instead of helping people right now I do not know why is the reason they did that.

If you want to help to the people who gets infected by the virus just donate to the legit organization so you can sure that your money will go to the covid19 patients.

Scammers are always active to create panic and trap people for their evil intentions. They are creating FUD and sending emails to many people. Crypto holders needs to be aware and safe their valuable assets from scammers.

Not agreed, majority of the countries government are trying & struggling to provided reliefs for the people's, although some countries are capable to ensured distributing food among all of them people’s. I think in the pandemic we need to donate for neddy people’s but which amount you can afford. A lot of countries are going lockdown for last 2 to 3 months. Donating of money don't think it’s matter of heroism.
