Title: [POLL]Dear Forum Administration, Merit Question
Post by: marlboroza on April 17, 2020, 02:22:25 PM
Each time I am not logged in and I receive merits, I always have this thoughts in my head:

"where, where, who sent me merit, where, who, who...oh, here, why, why now, why"

Why do we have to be logged in to find out who sent us merits? I mean, we can go to https://bpip.org and find merited post, but can this be somehow implemented in forum, for "guests" I mean...?

I also have the same thought. It really gives a little excitement which causes curiosity to know who is that person appreciated your post.

When I received merit from other user, I am notified by the telegram bot made by giammangiato (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5209107.msg54085847#msg54085847) and I will go to my Profile => Merit to see who sent the merit. I don't see any other method aside from manually viewing it to your profile and to https://bpip.org.

Same here. I always check my merit history when I have received any new merits. Become curious from where, which post, who sent etc. Since it's not something trust related or there isn't any harm implement to view merit history even during logged out, so I think it's better to allow visit merit history for guest. So we will able to check it during logged out.

In a short word, we can say - "please enable view merit history for guest"

Some things that are restricted to guests may be one of them is knowing the merit transaction history that we have received or sent to other users. For me, as long as we can still find out through the https://bpip.org site or monitor it through the telegram bot, I think there is no problem.

I also have the same thought. It really gives a little excitement which causes curiosity to know who is that person appreciated your post.
Although I also have such curiosity, but I have never used a telegram bot to monitor every merit provided on a post that I made. I will find out when starting activities in the forum. Checking profile and posting history are the main things I do when I start an activity in a forum. If there is an increase in the number of merit, I also take the time to check before responding to user responses on my previous post.

Meanwhile, if the advice from the OP is something that can be considered important for most users, then I also hope the admin can consider it. I like bright ideas to make the forum more friendly with anyone even though it is a guest.

You can also notified all time by a Smartband.
Here is the guideline by fillippone.

#meritislife: how to be notified on a smartband of merits and mentions (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5229697.msg53945720#msg53945720)

Why the hell is it clickable on guest mode? Long ago, I have been deceived a few times  ???

I have a different question: why do you even log out?
Are you kidding? I guess.
Most people here use (should use) TOR and you are logged out by default when you closed the browser. May be marlboroza can't wait such long for checking the merit logs.

Same, we don't really receive a lot of merits daily so getting a few would make you curious who give it and what post. A simple notification would be great to have.

I also have the same thought. It really gives a little excitement which causes curiosity to know who is that person appreciated your post.

I don't know about this Thanks for the tips I would love to try this.

Theymos once commented on it.

Quote
It doesn't make sense to show Trust to guests, since Trust is relative.

For merit, it was just an implementation shortcut. If people care, I can (at some point) make the user summaries public.

I have a different question: why do you even log out?

Even I am curious as most possible reason near to OP as I see is having multiple accounts. ???

The thoughts always comes to life Everytime I see a merit, but it's only when I see it on my account, I don't get to curious to check other people Merit.
So I just login since it my own account to know who sent it.
As a guest there curiosity is to check out the forum, learn things and see the landscape of the forum and if they want more they register, and bpip is used more by registered members

I don't have good answer to this question. Let's just say "I am logged out".

Is my alt account logged in? You fake review prick, if I was logged in then I would have seen merit transactions therefore I wouldn't have created this topic, wouldn't I, you Bump?
So I just login since it my own account to know who sent it.
Yes, but you need to log in. The thing is, "I am not logged in and I want to see who has sent me merit"

Maybe someone ought to create an app for smartphones, sort of a merit-alert checker or something.  Just thinking out loud here.

OP, you're not a cunt in my eyes and I'm not sure why that option got so many votes (lol).  Anyway, getting merits doesn't give me much of a buzz since I can't rank up any higher.  Maybe if Theymos created one or more new ranks above Legendary I'd be loving this idea, but as of now it's kind of meh.  I used to check my status more than I currently do, but now I'm more focused on distributing merits than what I'm earning from posts.

Ok, who voted against cunt ?!?
I did, for one.  If you want me to call you a cunt, I can.

I know there are several working telegram bots that notify members about merit change,
and as you said we can visit BPIP website for more information.
It is workaround.

You can still access your most recent posts. Just open them all up, or the likely candidates and viola - who merited you will be revealed. Don't need to wait hours for bpip to load  ::) .
It's a 'nice to have' though, agree.

It's almost like wanting to see your PM when not logged in or see your trust or someone else trust rate when you not logged in. The good purpose of not being able to access would merited you out match it's bad.
You got merited that clear to see, except you where waiting on a particular person to merit you knowing who is not so important not to wait till your next log in.

Why not clickable bitcointalk link to merits? So no apps, "merit-alerts", just click and see who has sent you merit. I always want to see what post someone "liked". I just can't do that with one single click.

Nah, it is not, read hacker's post.

I don't have good answer to this question. Let's just say "I am logged out".
Well, you could maybe try keeping your account logged in on your phone? Then you can quickly check who merited who? Or like you said you can check in bpip.org

I haven't tried this but isn't there a bpip extension? Does it help with your issue?

I get the anxiety that you get when you receive a merit, but its not something to lose sleep over. It has no actual gain, its just a number.

The extension doesn't do anything merit-related. It just adds some quick extra info to the forum (e.g if the user is on DT1/2 or banned).

I believe this also goes into:

Why not?

That's what I am trying to understand, why one is usually used to logout from a bitcointalk account or any other media if he/she owns the device he used to log in.
There must be something in this post:

Most people here use (should use) TOR and you are logged out by default when you closed the browser.
or <insert any other reason>

Ok, so there are few "tools" from where everyone can see merit history. Why don't we have it here?

Do TOR keep you logged in after closing the browser? I don't have idea about if it can be kept logged in by any way; at least I have no such known way.

There is a logout button and people sometimes press it by mistake, so it gets logged out.  :D

By the way, the poll results are getting interesting.  ;)

Do I understand right that there is no way to know which posts were merited? No tools to track who has merited you and for what. That's really sad, that'd be great to know!

You understand incorrectly. There are a number of tracking tools available internally, and externally from the forum. Here are just some them internally:

Variety of site wide metrics: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit
Your personal merit page: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;u=1550857

Your personal merit page will show you merit you have received, and sent recently. If you would like to check another users recent merit history you can check via the "Merit" link in their profile view. You can also amend that link I gave you, and replace your username ID with theirs. What this thread is discussing is the fact that the merit page isn't visible to those that aren't registered on the forum.

I have a different question: why do you even log out?

I use  multiple browsers. I tried switching solely to duck duck go and/or Firefox but can’t help but still use chrome. Chrome is not very “trustworthy”, of course, but good luck searching for btalk stuff (or damn near anything for that matter) via the duck duck browser and others. If I want to find “ satoshi escrow bitcointalk.org post” , chrome brings it up top link. Duck duck’s first few results are of Craig Wright claiming that he, “Satoshi” , never even posted on bitcointalk.

I and I’m sure others active  on the marketplace boards would like to have their full profile viewable with out having to log in.  As a “collector”, I buy/sell/trade on all sorts of sites and forums. My eBay and btalk user profiles are a way to help  “prove” my trustworthiness with a potential trade partner. This is my selfish reason.

Non-selfish reason: Scammers need to be exposed. Plenty of scammer companies have profiles here. Imo it’s important to expose them as much as humanly possible. A public forum profile trust page is one way to be sure!

(Edit: I too have many times wished the same for viewable merit as well).
