Title: Is this Plagiarism ?
Post by: UmerIdrees on April 21, 2020, 03:00:59 PM
I wanted to know that if i post a picture in my posts , (for example
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178336.msg54266470#msg54266470
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5168386.msg54239327#msg54239327) , now if someone else post the same images in any other thread, will it comes under plagiarism ?

Plagiarism means posting someone else's work as if it's your own. Although you didn't add a source reference, it's pretty clear you didn't make the images and aren't claiming you did. Anyone else can do the same, although it's better (and safer) to add a reference. See this example (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5242006.msg54267231#msg54267231) I posted earlier today.

I don't think so.

In the first place, you just get those images on the internet so it's not yours, then if you say those images are yours which isn't, then you plagiarised them.

But if you owned/created, captured/shoot them and you registered them on copyrights office then possibly if anyone who use your images without your consent and permission, obviously it's plagiarism it's a copyright infringement and that will cost them $$$.

And adding a reference to the image(s) is the best practice like mentioned above.

That would be a copyright violation, not plagiarism.

I don't think it was plagiarism, in the same cases or if you're going to think about it if you don't put the source of the image your basically owning the image which could be a reason for plagiarism.

so it is better to just do this:

And adding a reference to the image(s) is the best practice like mentioned above.

In some materials, there are also cases of fair use or copyright where you don't have permission to the owner

That would be a copyright violation, not plagiarism.

Let me summarize it and tell me if i got it right ?

-We can use any image on the internet (No need to care about it is a stock image or copyrighted image)
-For copyright image, the source should be given
-For general images, no need for source (because it take a lot of time mentioning the source if you post a lot of images in post as i do)
-If any other user posted that image / Meme before on bitcointalk, i can post it too. (this is i am saying because a lot of images are posted in WO thread and we can't check if the image or chart is posted before or not)

You have three ways to show source of images:

- Source: leave a link
- Credits: username, and link
- Including link of source in with your img block.
Code:
[url=sourcelinkfromwhichyousnapshottedthatimage][img width=200]LinktoImage[/img][/url]
Sometimes, you don't have to snapshot image and upload it to imgur.com (or other sites), you can directly take image link from the site you see that image. However it is just sometimes.
Guideline on posting images (with size adjustments), hyperlinks[]/url] (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3974517.0)

A copyright violation might get you a copyright claim. But that's a lot more likely if you do it on your (business) website than on a public forum.

You should always give the source.

I don't really know what you mean with "general images", almost anything has copyright. Including this text I just typed!
Posting a lot of images is no valid reason to omit the source. If anything, it should be an extra reason to add sources.

You don't have to check all 50 million posts before posting anything. But if you copy it from another post, you should just use "quote" instead.

That's cleared almost all of my concerns.  :)
