Title: Can i get wallet.aes.json from Wallet identifer? Lost password
Post by: iluvbitcoins on April 21, 2020, 07:47:48 PM
Shortest story: How do I get a wallet file from a wallet identifier (blockchain.info) ?

Short story: Friend knows 90+% of the password, doesn't have the seed but he has his wallet identifier. How does he enter his blockchain.info wallet? Can I get a wallet file somehow to put it in btcrecover?

Long story:

A friend of mine has really shitty luck.
He saved his seed on a piece of paper and a note in his phone, when his phone got destroyed he figured out his mother threw that piece of paper as she thought it was garbage.

There's no chance of getting the seed back.

He knows his Wallet identifier and as he claims 90+% of the password (he says it's probably either a different position of the charachters, different caps, or a missing special charachter, or a combination of those) and there's nothing else he could of used.

So, I see this should be easily solvable with btcrecover and just hashing the missing combinations?

The problem is I can't seem to figure out how to get a wallet file from the wallet identifier although I have found numerous sources that say it's possible.

Do you have the wallet.aes.json or is that what you want a copy of?

I'd try requesting it from blockchain.com if you can and see what they suggest (they might be able to send a bridge that'll help with recovery too or there are versions on github).

Ask your friend if he had contacted with their support team yet. If not then suggest him to do so. I think if anyone had the wallet identifier then the support team can unlock the account.

We don't have it, we just have the wallet identifier.

Thanks guys.
For some reason contacting support didn't even cross my mind..
I'll hit them up when the friend responds and report back.

There was an old discussion about this and the OP tried all the previous ways to get the wallet.aes.json file but none of them worked.
That's after the 2017 upgrade.

It happens, in bitcoin culture we have this in our mind engraved that nothing can be done if the pass phrase / private key lost but in this kind of online wallets the service providers always can help us out to unlock the accounts. I am not sure if they can access the key information of our wallets too.

Let us know your status.

If that doesn't work as nc says, there might be a way of using the api keys to repeatedly call the wallet giving a new password each time but that process will likely be much slower if it's even possible to do with a different api key.

Not in this case they cannot unless they served OP with a malicious version of the site if OP wasn't paying attention or using bc.i's browser extension back when they still had it. They can only provide the file and OP can try unlocking it if he has the password or bruteforcing the password if it's short enough or if he's missing only a few characters. I got my wallet file when I contacted their support in 2017 so OP might succeed if they still answer this kind of support requests.

There seems to be no help from the blockchain.info team.

There seems to be no help from the blockchain.info team.

What did they say, did they just not reply?

They're the only people that can help you if you don't already have a copy...

There seems to be no help from the blockchain.info team.

Have you tried contacting them and their people on reddit, twitter, and wherever else you can find them?

I also get the same loops as OP. E-mail sent, authorize, new e-mail, new authorize. It seems like it's a dead end.

Blockchain teams answer

"Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you are experiencing. Unfortunately we are unable to help recover or reset passwords. This is not a matter of policy but simply that it is impossible for us to reset a wallet's password due to the way the file encryption is designed. Please try every possible password combination you may have used.

You can use the legacy mnemonic to reveal the password at the time of recovery phrase creation here,
https://login.blockchain.com/wallet/recover-wallet Keep in mind the mnemonic recovery phrase only reveals the password at the time of phrase creation, if the wallet’s password has been changed since the recovery phrase was created then the information it provides may be inaccurate and out of date.

The older version of our wallet has been discontinued. This transition period was ongoing throughout most of 2016, and now upgrading your wallet to the latest version is required to access funds. You can learn more about the latest version via this link: https://support.blockchain.com/hc/en-us/categories/115000851246-Wallet-Functions.

Wallet.aes.json backups can be imported here: https://login.blockchain.com/wallet/import-wallet. Please note, this process does require the correct wallet password in order to decrypt the file.

If you do not have the correct password or an accurate recovery phrase, then access to the wallet and any funds it may contain has been lost.

If they have the wallet identifier, you can use BTCrecover to get the wallet.aes.json using a script to download it, and then use btcrecover as well to brute-force the password using the 90% of the password they know.

BTCrecover (original)
https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover

BTCrecover fork using Python 3 instead of Pyhon 2 that the original one uses, i have been using recently, seems to have some additional blockchain.com support.
https://github.com/3rdIteration/btcrecover

The script to extract the wallet file, is in the extract-scripts folder called download-blockchain-wallet.py and then use the btcrecover.py to actually password-guess the file.

If you need any help installing/setting up the program, let me know and i will give you a hand best i can but if you follow the readme you may have some success.

I think your problem would be solved, but you have to work hard. I think your friend has access to the registered mail which has used during the registration of the blockchain wallet. You can retrieve your wallet by a command from your PC. Then the brute force of the password. Even it's possible to brute force your second password if you have a wallet file. See the below video to learn the processor, hope you will find a solution. Here is the video: Brute force blockchain wallet by BTC recover. (https://youtu.be/rMtW8vIHHek)

I believe this will work for you. Don't forget to ask your friend to use a noncustodial wallet.
