Title: I will be making some s9 space heaters.
Post by: philipma1957 on April 26, 2020, 09:26:46 PM
I will be shutting down 28 s9 units come the 1/2 ing.

I will be converting a few to one board space heaters.

you get

one board
one s9 square tube
one controller.

some mods for silence.

one board means 300 to 400 watts of power.

these are not to be thought of as miners first.

think of them as a space heater first.

point to what ever pool you want.

they are not designed to roi.
they are designed to provide heat. and will cost less to run vs a space heater.

no psu. you need a psu for them.

They will be a available  in june.

prefect time for a space heater.  ::)

I prefer to ship to USA.

I will link my design thread later today.

This is not a preorder. More like an interested buyer order.

When I take in funds the gear will be in my house ready to ship.

This is more or less what is a quiet 330 watt 4 th miner worth to you.

Thanks!  Would these come fully assembled and just need the PSU or require assembly?  I would be interested in trying one during the summer months for solo mining.  We have electric heat and use my R4's now but 2 of these running would produce the similar TH/s for lower wattage.

I would clock them to about 4th and about 320-360 watts depends on your psu quality.

I will try to build about 10 of them.  We are talking a may 20 ship date.

Unless of course BTC moons and I can still mine them at full power after the ½ ing

Got it, thanks.

How much for 2 of them?  I would like to use the Bitmain APW3++ - 1 PSU for 2 units.

Got it, thanks.

How much for 2 of them?  I would like to use the Bitmain APW3++ - 1 PSU for 2 units.

Not sure as The most important part is finding fans..

If I can get a good price on fans say 8 or less. I can make them cheaper.

by having buyer provide psu they are cheaper and you save on shipping.

also 1 board vs three boards cuts weight.

I just ordered 10 fans which will do 5 of these.

paid 66 for the 10              = 13.20 in parts per unit.
foam is 15 does 5              =   3.00 in parts per unit.
some stainless steel screws =   0.30 in parts per unit.

so 16.50 in parts I would like to tack on 8.50 bucks profit = 25.00  plus shipping for a setup 1 board space heater.

that is a lowball price as I could just sell the s9 dirt cheap for more then 25 maybe 60 on ebay.

I don't know how to find the right price as 25 is too low and is giving a zero value for the case, the hashboard, the controller

I think I may try selling it for 40-50 and giving a spare hash board not inside the modded case which will only fit one board.

Also this would really be difficult to decide on correct price since I am selling it more to space heat. And you don't have to do labor to mod the s9 your self.

Once I get shipping info from seller  a Chinese seller I will have an idea of when I get them {10 fans} . And when I can ship to buyers here.

I also have a pricing issue if these become viable miners again.

Ie BTC moons before I take in money and ship.

I am thinking 40-50 bucks plus shipping
you get the  1 board mod with a spare board and you need to supply the psu.

I think I would sell at that price unless BTC moons up a lot. 10,000 and I would ask for more.

I am interested as well, how loud are we expecting? Not exactly thinking as a space heater but more as a gekkoscience style desk miner myself.

I have to go back and look at the build thread maybe 45db with an atx psu.

I will use bitmain software july 2019 set to lowest power it does 3300 th.

I will cherry pick boards .

I haven't owned a Sha asic since  the S5, if you plug in one of three pcie could you run a partial amount of the chips? I do remember that they were chained, so I am not sure if this is possible. Would be cool to run one at 100w (at 1/3rd the hashrate)

1 board set to -2th is the lowest on bitmain firmware I was going to use.

I think you could go lower with braiins maybe 2.7th

I have nothing to do I can play around remotely today and see the lowest board I can find. Then when I go to Clifton at. the farm the units are numbered I will know which one to pick.  this is s9 ACG it specs well on lowest setting 2 boards match out well.

this drops to freq 470 and about 3300 a board on lowest setting.
once mod is done fans will be at around 3000 rpm.  I would build it for one board and send a second board with it. the mod will not allow for a second board.  this will pull about 300 watts. depends on the atx psu you use.

https://i.imgur.com/SiCP9UI.png

here is the one I built last summer-fall
note fans are under 3000 rpm they won't go past 3000 and thus are pretty quiet but of course you can only run 1 board.

Would this unofficially be the most efficient 110V Antminer?  :)

Would this unofficially be the most efficient 110V Antminer?  :)

well if you are willing to go with aftermarket firmware it can go under 80 watts a th. so i guess that is a yes.

I won’t use anything but bitmain firmware. But if somebody wants to see how low it can go they are welcome to it.

I have been able to drop a braiins down to 82 watts a th.

since this uses lessor fans the fans will only pull about 10+10 = 20 watts at 2800 rpm.

stock fans pull. 25 + 25 = 50 watts at 5000rpm.

the chinese fan seller has claimed he shipped the 10 fans.

so i have 1 working model in clifton

i will be able to build 5 when the fans come.

so first batch will be six units.

the russians were building a passive radiator that does 65 watts a th. uses bit fury chips.

i saw the psu in it and it is a meanwell there is a 110 volt meanwell that would work. so i think they are more efficient.

yeah it got cold here in NJ.

the fans landed on the west coast yesterday maybe I get them by monday.

In theory a ship date for buyers could be friday the 15th.

i will have five or six first batch.

second batch will be five more.

goal is to sell maybe 20 .

Looks like I can use braiins and do 5.7 th at 499 watts stable and pretty quiet.

They will be set up to do 2 boards not one.

I have not been able to get the bitmain firmware to do what I wanted so I went with braiins plus.

https://i.imgur.com/ajYxMVU.png

https://i.imgur.com/7bYicr4.png

https://i.imgur.com/1IRjAlA.png

at 8.1 volts for each board and freq 410 here are numbers
https://i.imgur.com/Ne6Q5D5.png

old info below
Okay I got my first one setup to test.

Decided to use braiins plus and not bitmain firmware.

Although I have a few that can be bitmain.

it looks to be stable at 292 watts and 3.3th
very early numbers here show it just showing up on my pool. so it says 1.5 th I will post more info in the morning.

I hope to have 4-6 ready to ship on monday.

Thanks for the update.  Like ok sitting in the same room with your quiet?

Man  right now I am running two 2 board units. 892 watts.  and 10.3 th.  that is with volts at

8 and freq at 380 0 hardware errors.

fans are at 2100 rpm + 2100 rpm on the loud one  ;D

the other one fans are at

1260 rpm and 1800 rpm.

really quiet.

Now to be fair the psi is a corsair 1500 watt titanium  so that 892 watt reading may be  910 on a aw3++

I realized if I do them with 2 active boards and the low noise fans.

I can include the old loud fans in case of a price spike  these can become a louder more powerful miner.

so  they range from

a low of 450 watts and  5.15 th

to 800 watts and 9 th you must swap fans to go fast.

This is a nice project. So far so good.

Had to use braiins +  could not get bitmain firmware to play nice.

Did FIRST VIDEO  youtube it is  flooded with users so it will take 1 hour to up load it.

Looking forward to the video.  So to confirm, these units have a low power and high power mode but to achieve proper cooling in high power mode the fans have to be swapped out?

I personally would want the lower power and hash rate for less sound.  But good to have the option to make this more of a work horse.

EDIT:  Just watched the video.  Thanks for putting it together!  Certainly interested in using these for mining and as supplemental electric heat.

you can control volts and freq for both board.

8 volts and freq 380 is nice

8 volts and freq 410 is nice may be the highest you can do the freq at the 8 volt setting.

volts can be as low as 8.0

all the way to 9.40   by 0.1

ie

8.0
8.1
8.2
8.3
8.4

I would switch the fans with volts from 8.5 to 9.4
8.5
8.6
8.7
8.8
8.9
9.0
9.1
9.2
9.3
9.4

freq goes from 200 to 900

anything above 500 will need a better fan.

I will play with these over weekend and have some ready by Monday.

I am now testing volts at 8 and freq at 330

I get 410 watts and 4.7 th about 87 watts a th.

Working low end settings.

8 volts freq of 320 2 boards  gives me 4.5 th at 390 watts that is 86 watts a th.   fans set flat to 55%  1620 rpm

temps are
board     chip
67.75   75.83
68.50    75.63

these are really good numbers.

db in video was 57 now 52.

I have 3 built I have enough fans on hand to do 6.

these can be set from 4th to 6th

and do about 340 watts at 4th = 85 watts a th

to about 520 watts at 6th = 86 watts a th.

I will have the six built by Monday.

I would ship to you ,but shipping is high, maybe 110 usd.  2 units would be about 140 plus 110 = 250 usd.

You will need your own psu's as shipping makes it not practical.

Once I have the six all setup I will demo them on you tube.

Shoot me a pm I will program them with your pool and set them to about  4th.

They can be altered

the fans can do 1000 rpm to 2800 rpm

the freq can go as low as 200 as high as 900

volts can do 8 to 9.4

Since I made these to be quiet with slower fans.

I suggest never setting volts higher then 8.4
I suggest never setting freq higher then 440.

Your gear will be set to about volts 8.2
frequency to about 350
fans at 1200 about 40% on manual

giving around 350 watts and 4th.   for each unit.

shoot me a pm I will setup the pool for you on each one and test mine for you.

They like Firefox browser on windows.

They can do Firefox on Mac
they can do safari on Mac.

I also can access them with iPad with safari.

I seem to have trouble with edge browser and chrome when I use windows 10.

I downloaded braiins +  from braiins website to an sd card boot the s9 then loaded the sd card onto the s9 so they run without an sd card.

After weekend testing I am happy I have stable units.

Alright, I'm a bit slow, so using brains and undervolting how low were you able to get the wattage of a single board unit? Are you still planning on doing single board units? My use case is a lot less space heater and a lot more cheap desk piece cksolo pool.

I have the original 1 board unit built months ago.

I can hook it up today and go to 2th, 2.5th, 3th  and see what it does. for each setting.

I will sell the 1 board unit to you. I am pretty sure I can get it to do 200 watts and say 2.2th lets find out.  I will post back later today.

it is set to volts 8.2
and freq 350
fans are 40%. about 1200 rpm

this uses 225 watts and gives 2.5th   about 90 watts a th.

Thanks man, I'm looking forward to it.

first test is right here.

it is set to volts 8.2
and freq 350
fans are 40%. about 1200 rpm

this uses 225 watts and gives 2.4 to 2.5th   about 90 watts a th.

part of the efficiency being at 90 watts vs 83-85 is 2 fans and controller use 30 watts so a low set board 2.5th does not make up for the fans and controller.

Going to lower the freq to 325 and  will have results soon.

I have been using  Parallelminer PSUs for 110VAC to 220VAC for all home use projects, here is a link:

I think they will be better(more industrial) than the PSUs you are using.  Just trying to help out.

Here is a setup for a S9 for reference:

This one may be large enough for your heater:

So funny you should mention this..

I can run 2 x 2 board units but it gets the fan in the psu a bit louder.

It does run 1x 2 board unit perfectly go for about 4.75th. use about 400 watts

I just got 3 of these psu's in house seller's company is under 5 miles from my house.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-643956-201-1200W-HSTNS-PL30-Platinum-Plus-Hot-Plug-Power-Supply-643933-101/312798058602?

I have sent one to kingcolex with a breakout board and wires it is not heavy to ship to USA

I found 3 breakout boards.

so I now have 3 of these psu's blue plug jack style means more efficient then black plug.   say 397 watts vs 415 watts for black plug style

Cant wait for the 2 boarders to be ready! :)

Phil, will you be making any more single board units or are the dual boards more efficient/quiet?

I am not going to do any more  1 boarders.

I have two boarders ready. Five of them tested and can ship on Tuesday.

The two board can go to about 280 watts low end setting

and to about 500 watts high end setting with the quiet fans.

Two of them can range from 560 to 1000 watts.

They are a bit more efficient  then the one board. say 85 watts vs 90 watts a th

Shoot me a pm if you want 1 or 2 of them.

Since you are in USA

 I can do

About 190-210 for 2 units with 2 psu's

About 170-190 for 2 units with 1 psu  please note if you do this and hook both units up to 1 psu you can still use 120 volts but you would want to go lower speed as the psu's on 120 volts prefer to stay at 700 watts or less. So you would need to set to about 4th each unit and use 700 watts

About 150-170 for  2 units and no psu.

I forgot if you are west coast or near me in Howell,NJ. thus. the price range of 20 bucks is for more shipping cost to west coast.

Note the psu's will only be available to USA buyers.

Shipping to Europe is hard to do and they break balls on psu's along  with the extra cost to ship makes the psu's only USA
I needed to write 7 emails to get some gear into Spain due to psu safety rules and price of the gear.
They wanted exact proof of price .

I can ship the modded s9's as modified non working servers for testing and repair if I send to Europe.

Technically since there is no psu in the box they are not working gear  and they really do need testing and "repair".

Thanks!  Just sent a PM.  Ill take 2 with the PSU's

Can you share the voltage and proper settings for the best/max with the quiet fans?  I think you mentioned customizable voltage in a previous post.

Send me a pm.  and give me a btc addy to mine to on solo.ckpool

I will get this set up asap

please send me payment details and give me the btc addy to mine to>

If it hits it would be cool.

I will show the screen shots of the 2 units test running.

THIS unit below would be yours.

volts are        8.05
freq is           300
fans set to 60%  that gives a steady 1860 to 1960 rpm
watt meter says  360 watts

hash rate =  4.273

360/4.273 = 84.24 watts a th   but it will flux.  since hash rate drops to 4th and jumps to 4.5th  as hashrate does flux so you can run from 79 to 87 watts a th at this setting.

I will ship him two  2 board miners and 2 psu's on Tuesday via fedex I think.  I like to use fedex the clerk is hot. ;)

I have three 2 board miner's left
you can go as low as 280-290 watts
as high as 500 watts for these miners

If you are in USA and want a psu let me know.

they are about 70 plus shipping  without psu.
they are about 90 plus shipping with psu.

FedEx should make that a commercial.  ;)

I wanted to give others the chance to purchase, but if there are no other takers, consider them sold!

Don't worry the next set of fans came from China which means I can build 5 more. I will ship you the two Tues and be ready to sell more to you next week.

They are nice lottery machines with added benefit with heating.

I will end up with lots of spare parts so I will be able to support these for quite a while

the braiins software is really nice.
Runs well on mac os  chrome safari or firefox.
on windows  10 it likes firefox.

I got three test boards designed to fit in an s9

they do 5.3-5.5 a board at about 320 watts.

I may be able to get a lot of them.

since they are 52-55 watts a th they are not really cheap.

not sure if I can get 30 or 40 of them to make better 1 and 2 board gear.

i will post again

you can also look at hardware to see the test thread.

this is the newer better board thread.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5253561.msg54598149;boardseen#new

I have zero idea if I get boards in bulk
I have zero idea if price will be good.

but I would buy 30 boards at correct price.
