Title: Mist Vs MyEtherWallet
Post by: Seijun_Sango on May 04, 2020, 02:55:39 PM
Basically, a cryptocurrency wallet is a software that stores the keys you have for sending and receiving cryptocurrency tokens. These wallets also allow the users to check their cryptocurrency funds. All the transactions are updated on the blockchain network.

In other words, the wallet records all your cryptocurrency transactions but never stores the funds or your crypto money. So, what are the blockchains? Blockchains refer to the ledgers that are constantly updated. Thus, the ledger or blockchain is nothing but a transaction data.

Although cryptocurrencies have their own set of perks and drawbacks, many people are employing them more and more, resulting in their growing popularity. Thus, with this rise to fame, there is no dearth of cryptocurrency wallets.

Which is The Best Wallet For Your Cryptocurrency?

This is often a common concern among users of cryptocurrencies. While most of them are open-source running on decentralized systems, there are certain salient features that make the best one outshines the rest.

While we may not be able to discuss the features of all the cryptocurrencies out there, we have shortlisted Mist and MyEther Wallets. So, this article is a detailed analysis of the Mist vs. MyEther Wallet.

But before getting into these two wallets. First, let us understand the function or the purpose of any cryptocurrency wallet.

Typically, a cryptocurrency wallet could be any kind of entity like a physical device, service, or even a program. It entitles the users to track, send, and receive cryptocurrencies.

While the cryptocurrency is not specifically stored in the wallets, they are stored and also maintained in blockchains.

Thus, the wallet derives cryptocurrency from the blockchain and also updates the transactions on the blockchain.

A cryptocurrency wallet also stores the private and public keys where the private key is for spending or sending the cryptocurrency from one’s wallet, the public key is to receive cryptocurrencies.

Mist Vs MyEther Wallet: A Comparative Study

As the official Ethereum blockchain wallet, the Mist wallet platform was explicitly created to be used for exploring both the DApps and blockchain networks. In layman’s language, Mist is your typical browser created by ETH developers that are based on blockchain.

The Mist Wallet is a Full Node wallet that is also open-source. Like software, it is compatible with both mobile and desktop devices. However, you can only use Ethereum and ERC20 wallets. And, also there is no option of swapping the crypto coins.

However, there are no fees for completing transactions on the Mist wallet platform. Nevertheless, whenever you send cryptocurrencies, miner fees for validating the transaction applies

MEW or the MyEther Wallet is also an open-source wallet, and it functions on the client-side interface that enables the wallet users to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Here, the wallet is not a part of a centralized exchange.

While both are decentralized open-source networks, there are certain underlying differences. Here’s what more you can do with MyEther Wallet.

With MyEther Wallet, you can build your very own Eth wallet. You can use it to both send and receive ETH and also tokens. There are different wallet types to access, like MEW CX, MEW wallet mobile app.

The MEW also enables you to swap different cryptocurrencies, including and not limited to ETH, ETC, Bitcoins, Altcoins, etc. Unlike other wallets, MEW also has the option of sending digital coins or cryptocurrencies offline with its Offline Helper.

Top Differences Between The Mist Wallet And MyEther Wallet

Mist is the most common and standard wallet for cryptocurrencies. One can not only send, receive but also store their cryptocurrencies. That being said, to use a Mist wallet, the users must first download the Mist wallet.

On the other hand, MEW or MyEther wallet is a web-based service where you can control your cryptocurrency funds. Thus, there is no requirement to download it.

Offline Transaction

While the Mist wallet enables it to do the same with MyEther wallet, the device where the offline wallet is created must be connected to the internet. Thus, though cold storage (offline transaction) is a possibility in MyEther wallet, unlike the Mist wallet, internet connectivity is a must.

Safety from hackers and attacks on funds. While this is a possibility with MyEther Wallet as it is an online server, Mist is believed to be much safe.

Thus, to sum up, the primary differences, one is a web server, the other is a software that must be downloaded. The offline transaction is the second major difference. The last difference is that the type of cryptocurrencies that are compatible. While one is specific for certain coins, the other allows the swapping of various kinds of cryptocurrencies.

The bottom line is choosing the best wallet could be quite intimidating. However, based on an individual’s need, one can choose either of the two wallets.

I make use of imtoken and trust wallet, I could remember when I started crypto MEW was my best Erc 20 compatible wallet,  but it's too vulnerable, susceptible to hacking,  there were lots of complain then about people l who got hacked,  dunno if MEW team had done justice to that,  but I will recommend you use either of the two mentioned above

I haven't heard of the Mist wallet, is this really made by the Ethereum devs? Because it's not suggested by their main website that shows the suggested Ethereum wallets.

Wayback when i remembered on dealing with ETH into its earliest days where i do need to download that mist wallet but when Myetherwallet comes out then i do switch up on using it because of the accessibility and convenience since you can directly access it as long you do have connection. Its not that hassle and you can store up all erc20 tokens.

On their new updated platform which do adds more options for you to access your wallet not only on inputting PK but also other means of accessing a certain wallet.

I believe that majority of erc20 users now are using MEW than on Mist but this one do vary on each user though.

Yes Mist is the only desktop wallet that people have been using for Ethereum.

But the problem is that Mist is much less user-friendly if you compare with established bitcoin desktop wallets like Electrum. I had used it like 2years back but I dont know things have improved nowadays.

I prefer to use MEW because it gives me a lot of versatility is terms of control over the coins and ease in sending ether and tokens to other wallets. Moreover using the Metamask addon with the wallet is the safest you can be when a proper desktop wallet is not that good. Of course there are many android wallets too but I prefer the desktop or MEW offline over them.

Maybe I'll try to explore Mist wallet once my altcoins will start to pump,  ;D...

I can't compare both because I am only a MyEtherWallet user evers since, I have stored my altcoins in this wallet and thus far I never encounter a problem.

The same like me, from beginning I use MyEtherWallet and I am very satisfied.
Never had any issues too, and in this comparison I didn't find any reasons why
would I choose Mist over MyEtherWallet.
I agree with you about trying Mist wallet. Maybe one day I will try it, but for now
I will stay with my first choice for Ethereum and tokens wallet.

Choosing an unknown wallet over the most preferred wallet is not a smart choice, I haven't even heard the name of mist yet so I won't take such risks.

If anyone looking for an alternative to MEW then Mtcrypto,Trust wallet could be the best choices.

This is weird, Mist was the first wallet that was launched by the ethereum developers, maybe you should do some searching about it to know more? It is not as user friendly as MEW though so it failed to gain enough traction in the community added to the fact that it was buggy. I have used MEW for the majority of the times because of ease of usage.

MEW with Metamask plugin in your browser is enough for any ethereum wallet.

Ohhh, I didn't know that. Even when I am starting my crypto career MEW was most preferred one so I am that next-generation adopter. :D

Out of SM, owe you some bro.

It not wrong to know something, nobody is expected to know everything. But I also rechecked Mist's github page and it says "Deprecated" and so I was also lacking on this information which I just came to know yesterday.

https://github.com/ethereum/mist

So in a way you are also right that currently the best alternative is MEW with Metamask or Mycrypto.

No need for that. Its just plain information available on the net.

Yes, Myetherwallet is been a good choice for storing your altcoin im using myetherwallet since 2017 and no issue with it. MEW are also recommend by other project for storing their altcoins, But be aware there are many phishing site in MEW,  It would be safe if try to use Trustwallet and import your new wallet, so you wouldn't enter your private key on the website again and again.

I have used Mist wallet at the very beginning as I entered into Ethereum. It was very annoying that it has worked  as a full node. Synchronization was stopped suddenly and if I wanted to send a Token I am got stucked and had to wait for ages.
I haven't used MEW so I cannot say anything about it. I use Metamask.

I suggest you read the post above you as mist is an official wallet that released by ethereum foundation while MEW was a third party wallet released by a developer who has no relationship with the foundation.
How can you talk about trust wallet while we are discussing MEW vs Mist?

I am the complete other way around,,, I started using MEW (and always logged in with my full key which I later found out was not secure. Then I switched it to MetaMask, think it very easy to use and not a full node. Can replace fees if too low. MEW is a bit complicated on its own,,, which has its benefits.

in fact I am upside down from you, I never use what you wear but I always use MEW from the start. during this time I use I have never experienced anything harmful and felt complicated. finally the only habitual factor that makes people happier is not because there is a lack of them. but MEW has now started making changes which in my opinion are quite good and can also be directly connected to metamask.

Opposite here. I haven't tried Mist but used MEW since the beginning and up until now, I have never encountered any trouble even in sending tokens to exchanges. Even if you use low gas fees, your transaction still goes thru. So I can't say anything about Mist but I can share my experience with MEW. And so far, everything is smooth on my end.

from the start I never used mist but always used MEW and I couldn't analyze and compare between them. but as far as I use for MEW is very good and there is never an experience that is not wearing. especially now that MEW has also made an update, of course, following the developments.

in my opinion myethereumwallet, many advantages besides easy to use for all coins using the ethereum platform or erc20 platform without having to enter smart contacts, symbols, decimals but the weakness of myethereumwallet is easily hacked when using private keys and for mits I can't think about it because I haven't used it

I think if MEW before the current version I think there is a possibility of hacking, but for now it seems like it won't be easy to hack because the newest version of MEW can use the third application and because of this I still remain at MEW ERC-20 and for now I still have not heard bad news from some people in the latest version of MEW at the moment, and well, the wallet you recommend will be tried, so thanks

Yes. Me too. I haven't read any bad news about MEW either. And if there was a hack, we would know about it pretty quick. Either here or on Twitter, Reddit or in Cryptomagazines.

yes it is true that if there is really bad news about MEW, surely many will know, because I am also sure that the temperatures here will definitely find valid information and also share with us also in detail, because that is important news and as far as I know first very many who wear this MEW wallet and are also reluctant to switch, because it is comfortable and also reliable, more or less I think
