Title: Trezor or Ledger? And how to get my forks Bitcoin Cash / Gold / SV??
Post by: UnDerDoG81 on May 12, 2020, 10:44:50 PM
Hi,
my bitcoin is on a paper wallet for years now. Finally I want to get BCash, BGold and BSV and also want to move the Bitcoin (and the other forks) to a hardware wallet. I try to learn how to do it and want to minimize the risks. I have following questions:

1.   Wich Hardware Wallet is more safe? I read that there COULD BE a risk that Ledger makers could have a backdoor in the device to access coins? Trezor is open source no? Is it more safe?

2.   Did I understood correctly that if I want to get (claim?) my bitcoin cash from the BTC fork, before I do that, I should move my bitcoin from the paper wallet to a new wallet and claim my bcash after moving my bitcoin to the new wallet? So if the paper wallet is empty, I still can claim my bcash and bgold?

3.   Is Exodus on Mac safe to do this? Or is there a risk of viruses etc.? I dont have installed any weird software on my mac. But for example I have stuff like better touch tool etc. I remember when I created my Paper Wallet, on bitcointalk they told me to use a PC that will never be connected to the internet again. I used a fresh windows install, created my paper wallet and partitionited and formatted the hard disk.

4.   Is exodus.io the real website/source? On this website https://medium.com/@nesterenkoi565/how-to-sweep-for-bitcoin-cash-and-bitcoin-sv-on-exodus-wallet-7021c68d66a they are linking to exodusupdate.com what made me curious.

5.   I just realized, question 3 is not important, if the method in question 2 is correct? So first I would send my Bitcoin from the paper wallet to the Ledger or Trezor. And then claim my Bcash/BGold in Exodus and sent Bcash/Bgold from Exodus to the Ledger or Trezor right?

1.   Wich Hardware Wallet is more safe? I read that there COULD BE a risk that Ledger makers could have a backdoor in the device to access coins? Trezor is open source no? Is it more safe?

This is a contentious issue. Trezor is fully open-source while Ledger uses a Secure Element so it is not fully open-source. However, Trezor is vulnerable to a physical attack (https://donjon.ledger.com/Unfixable-Key-Extraction-Attack-on-Trezor/) which can't be fixed in a software update (Trezor T actually mitigates it by storing a secret on an SD-card which along with the PIN encrypts the data stored on the device). I personally own both Ledger and Trezor devices so I can answer specific questions about them.

Yes, you should move your bitcoins first to protect yourself against replay attacks. You should claim forked coins after moving your bitcoins to a new wallet. Of course, you will have to use the private key of your paper wallet.

4.   Is exodus.io the real website/source? On this website they are linking to exodusupdate.com what made me curious.

I have never used exodus so I can't answer this question. Why don't you use Electrum (https://electrum.org/#home)? Don't forget to verify it (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5240594.0). I guess you want to use a single wallet to access all the forked coins. Nevermind.

Correct.

I'll go straight to the answers:

1.   Wich Hardware Wallet is more safe? I read that there COULD BE a risk that Ledger makers could have a backdoor in the device to access coins? Trezor is open source no? Is it more safe?
AFAIK, Trezor has a physicall vulnerability, so if someone has access to the device, they could get the seed and steal the funds. I don't use a Ledger wallet, so I don't really know about any backdoors to it. Nevertheless, both HW are secure enough to be the most used around, and you can always protect your funds with a passphrase; that is, to say in very vague terms, an extension of your seed. You can read more about it here (https://blog.trezor.io/passphrase-the-ultimate-protection-for-your-accounts-3a311990925b)

BCH, BTG, and any other forked coins (BSV for example), are a copy of the Bitcoin blockchain at a certain point. If you had 5 BTC in a wallet before the snapshot, you'll get the equivalent airdropped (not always 1:1) ammount of that Altcoin at that moment in that address. Think of these forks as Altcoins, you can't send a DOGE transaction on the ETH network.

I'll skip these, as I lack the knowledge to answer them....

That would be the reccomended order, yes. You first move your BTC, because you are going to be entering your private key into other platforms/wallets, and who knows who's looking... Then, once claimed, sweep them into your HW and you'd be done.

As a matter of fact, I'd say that Coinomi wallet is reccommended to claim forked coins, becuase it offers multi-coin support, so when you enter your private key, it should retrieve the coins on all the available forks at once. LoyceV does also offer a service to claim these coins (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2836875.0)

Edit: Typos (lol); and I've realized that the thread from Loyce does also offer a table with the wallets in which (some) of the forks can be claimed

Thanks a lot Bitcryptex! So I cut the risk to zero when I sent my coin to another adress first. Thats great to know.

You have both HWs, wich one would you recommend as for easiness and for safety? Is it theoretically possible that Ledger has a backdoor for the devs? When I created my paper wallet, people said theoretically the random generated wallet could be saved online, even if you generate it offline etc. I have no technical knowledge about all this. I did it in 2014 and so far nothing happened because I used a password protection as well. Can I protect the Ledger with a password? Or could devs still have a backdoor to the coins? I mean its millions, maybe billions of cash if you count all ledgers in the world. We also trusted MtGox and we all know what happened.

I dont want to read instructions for hours. Just easy management. I only want to store my coin(s) (all forks I can get) and then hodl them again. I want to claim my forks because if there will be a situation I have to sell my Bitcoin quickly, I dont want to fuck around with the forks for days.

Thanks as well Csmiami. Sounds easier than I thought with claiming the forks. I was skipping this for 2 years now. Time to do it.

EDIT: I want my BTC and the forks all on one wallet, yes. Mainly BTC, BCash, Bgold and BSV.

To spend the coins in your paper wallet, you simply use any wallet that allows you to import your private key. That could be Electrum, Bitcoin Core, Mycelium, etc...

I prefer Electrum, so I could either create a new Electrum wallet selecting "Import Bitcoin addresses or private keys", which would import the private key and let me spend the coins to any address I wanted, or I could go to an already existent wallet (or another one I just created) and use the "Sweep" option to send the coins from the paper wallet address to one of my new wallet addresses. The latter would obviously require me to do two transactions if I was looking to send the coins to an exchange, friend or an store (Paper wallet -> New Wallet -> Friend VS Paper wallet -> Friend).

First you need to check which wallet supports what you want to store on it, and in case of  Ledger (https://www.ledger.com/supported-crypto-assets)&Trezor (https://trezor.io/coins/) BSV is not supported. In this regard, it does not matter which device you choose, but in terms of price you can currently get the Ledger Nano S (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5247655.0) for 50% off which is a great offer.

You can do the whole process very quickly, of course if you prepare well - which means that you have a hardware wallet, and all the other wallets through which you will claim forked coins, and then send them to the hardware wallet.

Yes, the PIN is the first wall of security. Fail thrice in a row, and the device will reset to factory settings, but you’ll always have your (well hidden and perhaps encrypted) backup card to default to in case this happens.

Theoretically I figure, Ledger could deploy a rouge firmware that might leak private keys to a backdoor server using Ledger Live as a bridge. Open source code based hardware wallets could well do that too, and it’s a question of which one is spotted first in the event of it happening.

Quote
Cynics may also wonder what is preventing Ledger from issuing a rogue firmware update themselves. The answer is quite trivial: just think about what we have to gain versus what we have to lose… An internal sponsored attack would not only be very quickly spotted and obvious to trace, but profits would be much less than what Ledger’s future equity is worth on the market.

Extract from the first article listed below.

I personally use Ledger, but the profit counterargument above is perhaps not the best that can be used.

These are some of Ledger’s security notes for the general public:

Paper Wallet is only a printout that contains a Bitcoin address or public key that allows transferring coins to the wallet, and a private key that gives access to send funds. This Private Key is imported into other software for sending funds.
You can make a Paper Wallet e.g. on bitaddress.org (https://www.bitaddress.org/) or bitcoinpaperwallet.com (https://bitcoinpaperwallet.com)
Note: It Recommend to disconnect the internet during the process of generating an address.

Thanks @all

The 50% discount sounds good. But I am still afraid of the mentioned possible firmware hack. I might also consider generating a new paper wallet and sending it there. First I have to read more about Ledger security.

While Ledger can't give us much information about the chip due to NDA, most of their software is open-source, including Ledger Live (https://github.com/LedgerHQ/ledger-live-desktop).

You have both HWs, wich one would you recommend as for easiness and for safety?

Both Ledger and Trezor devices are easy to use, have detailed documentation and supportive community. I can't really recommend you a specific model and whether or not you should buy a device from Ledger. It should be your decision if you want to trust Ledger or buy either Trezor One or T which are already vulnerable to (sophisticated) physical attacks which cannot be fixed.

Note that you don't have to use Ledger devices strictly with their software. You can pair their wallets with Electrum and even use them to sign transactions on an air-gapped machine. IMO, that would be an overkill setup.

Thanks! I used some Passphrase (not sure if it was BIP 38 in 2014) with my paper wallet. I guess it will be not that easy to import my private keys to Exodus, Electrum or a Hardware Wallet?

I don't think you can add a passphrase in Exodus; you can do it in Electrum. Both Ledger and Trezor also support passphrases. Coinomi (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.coinomi.wallet&hl=en) might be the most convenient choice for you since you will be able to claim the forked coins easily after moving your bitcoins.

You could import it into electrum and send your BTC to a new wallet.
You definitely can't import private keys into a hardware wallet (which would be completely against the reason to get a hardware wallet).

As mentioned by BitCryptex, coinomi might be a good choice for you. It support a lot of shitcoin altcoins. You could easily access all of them.
But, depending on the amount of BTC you have, you might want to use a more trusted wallet to move your BTC first.

Do you mean adding extra word(s) to the existing 12?

Thanks guys! Looks like I have to read a lot before I do anything. I now ordered the Ledger Nano S.

I am a real noob in Crypto. But as much as I remember, I imported one private key in 2016 to the blockchain.com app on my phone. It asked me for the passphrase, I entered it and everything worked out fine. After that, I sent my coin to Bitstamp and tried daytrading. Lost a few bucks and sent it back to a new cold storage lol.

Exodus does support the 12-phrase

Passphrase is not the same as 12 word recovery phrase. In his case, the passphrase is the 13th word which is completely custom and not related to the BIP39 wordlist.

If your device comes uninitialized (meaning you have to set up your wallet and save the recovery phrase) then you should be safe. Ledger Live will also check the authenticity of your device once you set it up. Here (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002481534-Check-if-device-is-genuine)'s the official support page about that.

Exodus has one-click claiming for all those forks.
And the Trezor links up seamlessly within the wallet - no need for clunky extra software like Ledger.

You have a link for that? Is Exodus on the Mac safe? I want to import the private key, get the forks and then sent all to the Ledger.

Or I do consider using a paper wallet again after claiming the forks. Feel much safer with that.

I am suggest to import private key into electrum like TryNinja said (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5248044.msg54421296#msg54421296) then send all bitcoin into ledger wallet. Then import private key from electrum to exodus to claim all forked.

Ok I will first import it to Electrum and then sent it to Ledger (or new paper wallet) and then claim the forks in exodus.

And you mean Electrum on Mac is safe? Yesterday I installed it and imported the "watch only" adress. Today I started Electrum and was scared for a few seconds, when I realized, it starts from the dmg and was not installed as app. I thought it deleted the wallet file because its not installed. But it loaded the wallet and worked. Yet it scares me and looks vulvernable to me. Maybe my Mac freezes or something else happens and then all is gone. Unless I safe the wallet on a USB I guess. And yet its something digital that can be lost or damaged. That makes we want to use a paper wallet.

You should still consider using Coinomi to claim the forked coins after you move your bitcoins since Exodus does not support importing private keys (https://support.exodus.io/article/1050-whats-the-difference-between-importing-and-sweeping-a-private-key). It sweeps the funds so you would create an unnecessary transaction before moving your forked coins to your Ledger.

Unless I safe the wallet on a USB I guess. And yet its something digital that can be lost or damaged. That makes we want to use a paper wallet.

You can always back up your wallet file (open finder, press shift+cmd+G and type in "~/.electrum") but your recovery phrase (12 words) is enough to recover your wallet. You should write it down and hide it properly.

I don't want to scare you, but I advise you to thoroughly check your computer for viruses and malware before taking any action. What you need to pay special attention to is to check every address you send to, because there is something called clip board malware that replaces your address with a similar one, so the coins go to the hacker.

My recommendation is to download the free version of Malwarebytes, and scan your computer - if there is anything malicious, this program will detect and remove it.

Not necessarily.

It will remove malware which already is in its database or which is extremely conspicuous.
Everything else will not get detected / removed by an AV software.

Isn't having to check for viruses on your PC and risking a possible undetected malware to affect your funds a bit more of a hassle & a risk than flashing a verified live linux image on some USB and using that one to do all the crypto stuff?

I used to almost poop my pants every time I had to create a new paper wallet, but ever since I started using properly verified live images to do this kind of stuff.. I have no more issues.

I don't know, just a friendly suggestion here ;D Manjaro for example is a pretty newbie-friendly distro you can use for this purpose imo, the only thing is that if you're a beginner to computers then I might actually put you into more difficulties. If you have a sheet of paper to properly write all the seeds on, I don't think there's much to worry about when using a live image.

You can boot into the live image, do all the transfers you need and then you'd just shut down your PC, go back to your main OS and enjoy your funds over there through whatever Ledger-compatible software you use. If you want to use only Electrum and Ledger Live, there are so many distros out there with Electrum already installed and Ledger Live is only a few clicks away from installing.

Just a little warning: shutting down your PC in Live Mode means all the changes you've made in that live system will be erased. So just write that damn seed right on the paper sheet I mentioned above and you should be fine :D

Is it theoretically possible that Ledger has a backdoor for the devs?
Most of Ledger's source code is open-source. Nobody can tell you for sure what the safe element does since the code is not public. But I figure that if such a backdoor exists, they had a lot of opportunities to abuse it in the past, and they didn't.

In theory, everything is possible. Trezor is completely open-source but can you personally check the code and inspect what it does? Is it theoretically possible that Trezor's source code is also in some way backdoored or bugged but nobody knows how to find the vulnerability parts? Or those that do aren't telling us. There is that small possibility too. It all depends on you and your paranoia level.

I trust my iPhone more than my mac. Because I aint have a jailbreak and aint use any crazy apps. Just the basic stuff. Risk is always there. But on the Mac I installed some apps that I downloaded from the internet and not from the app store. I will try Coinomi. But it looks like its not a easy task for a noob and needs lots of reading. If my BTC is safe, I could accept losing the forks in worst case scenario, thats ok. First I wait for the Ledger and then I do the fork stuff.

Is it theoretically possible that Trezor's source code is also in some way backdoored or bugged but nobody knows how to find the vulnerability parts? Or those that do aren't telling us. There is that small possibility too. It all depends on you and your paranoia level.
As far as I remember, they mentioned the reason a backdoor wouldn't be worth it somewhere on Reddit, they basically said they'd have so much to lose by creating these backdoors when they could simply develop something successful and create a large company out of it - which is what they basically did. I'm a little paranoid when it comes to the closed-source manner of the safe element too, but if they ever put some backdoor inside our Ledgers and want to ever scam us all, the damage will be way beyond my loss of funds - it'd probably basically parabolically strike BTC's price within minutes.

I understand. The last time I used Coinomi, sweeping a paper wallet was as simple as installing it, choosing "Sweep Paper Wallet" (or "Sweep Wallet", can't remember) from the top-right side of the screen where you have the menu, scanning the private key (or manually inputting it) on the window that pops up and that's basically it. Coinomi would then just scan my balance and do the transfer in case I confirmed the transfer.

Here is apparently a tutorial on their website for sweeping wallets: https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000009716-migrating-from-other-wallets-into-coinomi, but it doesn't let me access the link from Tor to confirm whether the article is still there. Please check it out and see if it helps. :)

As far as I know though, Coinomi used to be open-source but it's not anymore.

The keypoint is not rushing the process. Make sure you write down the proper Coinomi and Ledger seeds on a sheet of paper and come back here if you have any question.

I just installed Coinomi on my phone but I guess its pretty limited there. I was not able to import the "read only" adress with the cam. After scanning it, it simply does nothing. And I dont want to scan my private key yet.
Yeah I wrote down all words on a paper.

EDIT: Ok I could not wait and sweeped the paper wallet after reading your comment. Yeah I was able to do it on the phone app as well. I received it already. But now on the app, when I chose "claim forks" nothing happens.

EDIT2: Did I get it right, with these 24 words I can access my wallet every time, even if I lose my phone?

EDIT3: Ok I installed it on my Mac and I can recreate my wallet with the 24 words passphrase. But I dont want to type those words on my keyboard because I have some apps installed that have access to my keyboard typings.

Where is the "Claim forks" you speak of? Can't you just sweep your private key again for both Bitcoin Cash and Bitcoin Gold as described here (https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000016813-claiming-your-forked-coins)?

Ok guys, it worked. I moved my Bitcoin to Coinomi. Then I claimed my Bcash and my Bgold by sweeping. But on Bitcoin SV it says "no connection" and has a red dot.

It is the same for me. Apparently, Coinomi's Bitcoin SV node must be down for some reason. Try again in a few hours or days. Note that BSV has no reply protection; you should be careful when sending Bitcoin Cash and BSV. You can learn more here (https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000026274-bch-abc-bsv-fork-information-splitting). Sending your BCH and BSV to two different (your) addresses at the same time will also split your coins.

Thanks mate, you helped me a lot! And thanks for the tip about Bcash and BSV.

What I dont get right now is, I swiped sweeped my paper wallet into Coinomi. That means it was already on a new wallet right? After I claimed all the forks, I panicked and sent the BTC to a new adress. Guess that was needless. Paid fees twice now.

You needn't have sent your BTC. Sweeping means that your wallet will automatically create a transaction sending the funds to your new wallet. Most wallets won't allow you to import a private key because the recovery phrase would not recover coins from imported addresses.

Ok. I got my Bitcoin SV now too. Do I have to use this splitting method as well if I want to change them into Bitcoin within the app? I dont need the forks and prefer holding all in Bitcoin. I guess the forks dont have any benefit for holding right? Or is it really possible that Bitcoin dies or got hacked etc. and Bcash or BSV get the leading coin?

Hi UnDerDoG81, make sure you properly split your BCH and BSV by following the article (https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000026274-bch-abc-bsv-fork-information-splitting) BitCryptex sent you. It only has to be done once, but it's an essential process. Otherwise if you try to send out the BCH, BSV will be sent along with it (and vice-versa). If you have the BCH in the "Bitcoincash" wallet and the BSV in the "BitcoinSV" wallet, you're good. If you see the BSV in the "BitcoinSV M/44H/..." wallet, they are most likely not yet split. Please make sure you follow all instructions and don't skip any step or check. Please open a support ticket on the article linked above if you have any questions and we will help you directly.

If your coins are already split, you can use the in-app exchanges to trade them directly to BTC.

That's right! If you wrote down the 24 words upon wallet creation on Coinomi, if you ever lose your phone you should be completely fine.

That depends solely on what you support, on your thoughts & on what you plan to do. Chances of BSV and BCH getting somehow attacked are much larger than Bitcoin's imo. BSV is Faketoshi's coin so hell no, it'll never become what some people wish it would and BCH is pretty much the same pattern.

Between all 3, I'd personally place my bets on BTC. Now it also depends whether you support BCH's features instead, but the thing is that both forks claim they're the actual, original Bitcoin which is plain bullshit and the main reason I've lost respect for both.

Actually I only believe in the original Bitcoin. But yet something weird could happen and the BCH or BSV price could jump up. BCH was worth 4k, what was crazy. And BSV was around $450. Maybe I hold them  all seperate.

So, my Ledger was announced to be delivered today by DHL express. I aint get it. Its midnight here and its still "in delivery on 15th May". That makes me curious of course. What if the DHL guys know about Ledger and change the original in the package against a fake one? I mean I might sound paranoid. But I dont trust anybody anymore. Ledger should use a different shipping adress. I remember, once I ordered condoms from a sex shop and they used a printer shop as shipping adress.

You are too paranoid. You should take into account that deliveries are very likely to be delayed because of coronavirus. Lots of people order goods online now. As I wrote earlier, Ledger Live will verify the authenticity of your device so you have nothing to worry about.

Theoretically, very well possible.
He can't do anything with your ledger. There are hardware mechanism to protect against some kind of stuff.

But a few attacks would still be possible (e.g. inserting a chip and a small antenna to trigger button clicks from ~11 meter away).
This, paired with your compromised computer, could allow an attacker to steal your funds.

However, do you think this is somewhat realistic in your case ? If you aren't a BTC millionaire which everyone knows about, i don't think so.
But even if you are paranoid about it, you can always open the case and check whether the hardware looks genuine. Ledger published a guide.

 ;D
What about this: From now on, ledger uses a sex shop as their shipping address? That would kind of solve the problem  :P

But even if you are paranoid about it, you can always open the case and check whether the hardware looks genuine. Ledger published a guide.

It is not wise to give a man an idea and not to warn him of what arises from such an action. By checking hardware integrity (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005321449-Check-hardware-integrity) "Be aware that once opened, your device will not be refundable or exchangeable.".

What if the DHL guys know about Ledger and change the original in the package against a fake one?

Although the possibility for such a thing always exists, I think that modifying the existing device takes time and technical knowledge, which would certainly affect the delivery time. Second option is that original device is completely replaced with a fake device pre-prepared, but such an approach only makes sense if one is a target that which has a significant amount of coins.

Ledger should use a different shipping adress.

I agree that it would be much better (for the safety of customers) for the shipment to come in a package that would not reveal where the shipment comes from and what it is inside. Why does my postman and all those who come in contact with the package need to know that I have anything to do with crypto, which is especially pronounced in small communities where such things spread rapidly.

You need the guide to check the hardware.
And the warning is shown in a box with "CAUTION!".

I felt like he is able to read properly, so no need to treat him like an incompetent person.

Forget about them sabotaging when they'd just steal. Why bother switching in the first place when you can steal a package?

Plus, they're handling so many packages so if some "unlucky" guy tries to do anything funny, all you have to do is file a complain and you'll get reimbursed.

ADD: It's obviously easy to spot when a package is tampered vs a brand spanking new virgin one. If you've unboxed electronics before which I'm sure you did, you know what I'm saying.

He is worried that his device could be replaced with a fake one which could steal his coins. Extremely unlikely to happen and really difficult to pull off. Sorting centres are full cameras and delivery couriers are so busy that I don't think that they have time to look through every package. Nevertheless, as I wrote above, Ledger Live will verify the authenticity of the device so OP will know that it is is a genuine one before even sending coins to it.

Ledger Live will only verify the firmware, not the hardware.
Hardware attacks can still be pulled off (e.g inserting another chip).

However, those attacks are extremely unlikely. A simple 5$ wrench attack is way more probable.

Thanks guys. Haha yeah I know a very paranoid and very very unlikely scenario. But yet you have to be careful these days. At then end, 1 Bitcoin is worth around 9000€. The delivery guy earns this amount in 5-6 months. The last 3 packages I received from DHL were opened and looked inside. It were only supplements inside. But I called the delivery company and complained about it. Why does he have to know what I order?

Now the delivery changed from yesterday to 18th May.

There is no need for you to judge whether someone is capable of something or not, and the OP is obviously not someone who is well versed in such things - otherwise he would not have open a topic like this at all. If you imply that I think he is incompetent, then what am I by giving him that advice?

The time it takes to modify the hardware as i described is roughly 2 minutes.

So for open a package and modify a device, put all back as it was before without visible traces for only 2 minutes? Obviously you have a very high opinion of people working in DHL, some obviously have some very special skills.

I understand his concern, but if I don't think a courier guy would try to rip open the parcel, and attempt to swap the unit because of the parcel sticker (that's a dead giveaway). Of course anything could happem, but no sane person would rather lose his or her job just to scan through each package from a company called Ledger out of the bajillions.

I ordered mine from a shopping platform, and it arrived without tampering of some sort.

I have a problem now. I imported my first paper wallet without any problem and claimed all forks because it was not BIP38 password protected. But my other paper wallets are BIP38 pw protected. Sweeping the Bitcoin into Coinomni was no problem. Had to enter my password and done. Even though it took an hour for confirmation. But now when I want to claim the Bcash, it says "an unexpected error occured". What do I have to do to claim my forks?

My 2nd question is, would you trust coinomni more or Ledger? I received my Ledger today. But I wonder why not keep the coins on Coinomni? They say the private keys never leave the phone. And if you lose the phone, you can recreate your wallet with the 24 word phrase. Or lets say not trust but it looks easier to leave the coins on Coinomni to have access everywhere and all the time. I mean I dont take the ledger with me anywhere I go. But my phone is in the pocket.

I have 6 paper wallets because in 2014 I followed the advice to split my coins into multiple wallets in case of a hack. They each contain 0.1 BTC. Now what I don´t like, after sweeping them into Coinomni, the all dropped to 0.09xxxxx. $4.50 fee per transfer was a lot! Not a problem but not beautiful for the eye. Just wanted to mention.

I would trust Ledger more. Since most phones are encrypted by default, you shouldn't be worried about coins getting stolen if you lost your device. However, you never know what kind of malware or vulnerabilities might affect your device. Hardware wallets are designed to be invulnerable to remote attacks unlike smartphones which are general purpose devices.

Mempool is currently 200+MB, so fees are pretty high. If you were in no rush, you could have sent the tx with an smaller fee, and even if it will take (a lot) longer to confirm, coins would have arrived too

If you don't want to type your mnemonic code into your PC, you could just install another mobile wallet (e.g. electrum, samourai or mycelium) and restore your wallet with these.
This obviously will only work for your BTC.

Another option would be to create a bootable linux live distro and use your mnemonic code to create a wallet in that live distro.
Then just send your coins to an exchange or wherever you want them to send to.
Since you are not creating a new wallet, but using your mnemonic code, there is nothing you need to save. Just boot it, import your mnemonic code, make your transaction and shut down your pc.

Hi,

now that coinomni fixed the sweep error on iOS, I can finally claim the forks. I am not sure about splitting BCH and BSV (https://coinomi.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/29000026274-bch-abc-bsv-fork-information-splitting). Where or how can I receive already splitted BCH? I mean I know I can buy some on an exchange. But are these already splitted?

Yes, they will be already split. Any amount of BCH above the dust limit (https://bitcoin.stackexchange.com/questions/71604/what-is-the-dust-limit-on-bitcoin-cash-transactions) will be enough.

Thanks! Just tried with Bitstamp, their "buy with Credit Card" function does not work and the minimum amount is $50. I am really a noob with cryptos. I remember that from a paper wallet you had to sent all the coins to an adress because you expose your private key right? I guess I can sent 0.01 BTC to Bitstamp from my Ledger and that is no problem right? Or do I have to move all my BTC to a new adress after sending a small amount?

I remember that from a paper wallet you had to sent all the coins to an adress because you expose your private key right?

Yes, that's what most people recommend to do. Paper wallets are usually used by people who intend not to spend their coins very often.

Yes, there shouldn't be any problems. Hardware wallets are designed not to expose private keys, so you will be fine with the same BTC address and wallet. You could also try to ask someone to send you very little BCH, but that would expose your addresses to that person.

Sorry, now my last question I hope.

I now sent BTC to Bitstamp. I will buy BCH with that. Then I sent them as described to my BCH wallet to split BCH and BSV. Now to be sure, can I sent only 0.01 BCH to the ledger BCH wallet to see if the split has worked? If not, then I will only lose 0.01 BSV right?

Yes, you can send as little as 0.01 BCH. There is no reason why it wouldn't work, but in the worst case scenario, 0.01 BSV will be sent to the same address on the SV chain. If that happens, you will be able to use your Ledger with the Electrum SV (https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/360012270054-Bitcoin-SV-BSV-) to access those coins.

Awesome, thank you again! I think it worked. I sent 0.1 BCH to Bitstamp and my BSV stood the same amount 0.2

Keep in mind that replays do not have to happen instantly after the original transfer. Don't worry about it. You are safe since you have followed the instructions.

It seems it worked. Moved my Bcash to Ledger and the BSV to a new wallet and own equal amounts of both now still after 12+ hours.

Now the big question is, keep BCH, BSV and Bgold or switch them all to Bitcoin. I guess all three of them wont lose much more because they lost a lot already. So I think it does not matter if I keep them or switch them to Bitcoin. Because all alts follow Bitcoin.

Now that everything is safe, I can try to claim the little pieces as well like Bitcoin Diamon, Super Bitcoin, Lightning Bitcoin etc. Its just a few bucks but anyway...

Paper Wallet is only a printout that contains a Bitcoin address or public key that allows transferring coins to the wallet, and a private key that gives access to send funds. This Private Key is imported into other software for sending funds.

To send bitcoins one don't even have to import private key stored on the piece of paper "into  other software" wallet. Everything can be done with a script of coinb.in set up (for safety) on air-gapped computer, i.e. one can create and sign the raw transaction with coinb.in's script on such device and then push it via any online service.

You still need to enter the private key.
Whether you are actually "import" it into a "software" or enter it into a script doesn't really make a difference.

The result is the same. The private key has to be inserted into some kind of software to actually sign a transaction.

Any reputable exchange.
Don't use instant exchanges.

If you are not sure where a certain coin is trading, you can always look it up on CoinMarketCap for example.

The BSV/BTC trading pair shows the following exchanges on the top.

OKEx - https://www.okex.com/market?product=bsv_btc
CoinEx - https://www.coinex.com/exchange?currency=btc&dest=bsv&tab=limit
HitBTC - https://hitbtc.com/BSV-to-BTC
BitForex - https://www.bitforex.com/en/spot/bsv_btc
CoinBene - https://www.coinbene.com/exchange/en_US/BSVBTC

Of course, do you own research and use an exchange you are comfortable with. All the links were taken from CMC.
I am not a fan of HitBTC, and probably many users will agree that they are sketchy.

There is a huge range of exchanges here: https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/bitcoin-sv/markets

Whether you are actually "import" it into a "software" or enter it into a script doesn't really make a difference.
Difference is in approach. It’s one thing to import a key into software that resides on computer designated for routine day-to-day work and quite another matter to do it with the script (btw, which  is  easy to check) living on air-gapped device. I think you can understand which one of two is the safest way.

You need to keep the context in mind.
We were never speaking about air-gapped vs online.

HusnaQA simply said:
Paper Wallet is only a printout that contains a Bitcoin address or public key that allows transferring coins to the wallet, and a private key that gives access to send funds. This Private Key is imported into other software for sending funds.

That statement itself is true.
Whether you import it into a "software" or use a "script", doesn't matter at all.

What matter is whether you are entering your private key into an online device or an air-gapped one. But that was never a point from HusnaQA.

If we compare air-gapped devices, it doesn't matter whether you use a "software" or a "script". Same for online devices.

Offline is better than online. But "software" vs "script" doesn't matter at all.
