Today marks the 10th anniversary of BitcoinPizzaDay.

On this day ten years ago Laszlo Hanyecz bought two pizzas for 10,000 $BTC.

Here's a thread of Bitcoin Pizza Day facts you might not know:
The fee paid for this famous transaction was huge by today's standards: 0.99 BTC! Today that's worth $9050.

A common misconception is that 10,000 BTC bought one pizza. It actually bought two! 🍕🍕

The two pizzas were bought from @PapaJohns.

The transaction wasn't direct. Laszlo sent the 10,000 $BTC to a fellow Bitcointalk forum user who then paid for the pizza to be sent to Laszlo with fiat.

At that time 10,000 BTC was worth ~$41. Bitcoin has increased in price by around 23,000x since then.

Laszlo didn’t just complete this deal once. It was an open offer and seemingly occurred many times.

The common misconception isn't really so much he bought only one pizza with 10,000 bitcoins, the misconception really is that he only made one 10,000 bitcoins for a pizza transaction.  He actually used anywhere from 30,000 to 35,000 bitcoins for several bitcoin for pizza purchases. If you follow his original tread here, you can see it several pages in to it where he admits doing such.

I'll assume the man who introduced GPU mining, and was asked to hold off by Satoshi, had coins to burn. I seem to remember him saying in recent times that he had little left but he should be saying that of course.

I'd love to know what everyone beyond that thread who was around at the time thought of it.

Good post OP, thanks for mentioning things in the right order. It's a historic day for bitcoin. Hard to believe this was 10 years ago already.
This pizza exchange was turned into a meme and in my opinion rightly so. It's a story worth telling.

On that note, It's the first time I see the face and hear the voice behind the personality that was laszlo.
Also interesting to see he still works a job as an employee. His no regrets attitude can teach lessons.

There are a lot of stories and myths about bitcoin but this one of the markers of the history of bitcoin

We can't do anything about it since 10,000 Bitcoin became a well known event for all of us. Nonetheless, this is a good fun fact about this event though. It's still pretty surprising that he still works though because I'd imagine him as someone who is living a carefree life with all his Bitcoin.

Still remember with bitcoin pizza day? I think the owner will cry more because sell bitcoin with cheapest price. Hope every one could't post this topic and never make bad memorize with this person have lost bigger chance in their life and now back to normal life without remember with bitcoin anymore.

Happy Late Pizza day! Does anybody know what kind of Pizza it was? Salami or with pineapples?

This is where all it started, after that the price of BTC in the market went up over the hill rising mostly every month since that time. Now the price seems shy to rise to more than $15,000 since last bull run. maybe if something makes a good offer like this one the price will likely rise again. but this time it requires more than $41 from someone's pocket. it requires a giant corporation to make some huge offer to make the price rise again and that's what we called in our time numerous adaptation by some big companies. If that will happen right now, then we create another history on the calendar.

Ohh i'm late for the pizza party lol.

until now i was thinking that what if i was the one who bough this pizza ,maybe i will be forever in regret doing such.

specially now that the price of bitcoin is 4-5 digits .

It doesn't really matter and i dont think this is misconception because most of the time articles/people say that was first transaction, he bought pizza (without specifics) for 10 000 BTC which is true and correct.
He could have bought 1 or 100 pizzas, but it was first transation for 10 000 involving pizza :)

Whenever "Bitcoin pizza day" arrives worldwide bitcoin users get the opportunity to know about the early days of bitcoin. It works as a lesson for haters and encouragement for lovers. During the eve of this day bitcoin users can feel the strength and overall growth for last 10 years atleast. If anyone rise question about the use and acceptance of btc then this pizza story is enough to make the guy silent.

I never take this story as a fun because i know its pretty much easy to find the potentiality of bitcoin from the mistake which was made 10 years earlier.

I wonder what the Pizza Store did to the 10,000 BTC at that time? If they they kept the Bitcoin, they are a millionaire already. Although if they did something to those BTC 10 years ago, they might keep on regretting that decision if that really happened. Nevertheless, it's so surreal to think that the Pizza Store would accept Bitcoin in 2010.
