Title: I was trying to send a message but something weird happened.
Post by: jamyr on May 22, 2020, 04:46:27 PM
Greetings,

I was about to send Lauda a personal message but I just noticed that when I use the Find Members feature, searched for Lauda, I get this:

Who is this "LaudaM" that appears on my To:textbox ?
I have sent to "Lauda" before but maybe he/she never received my message because of this.

I don't know what you did.
When i am searching for "Lauda", i get the following result:

The first result obviously is the Lauda (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=101872) you meant.

It's normal, caused by a name change.

Why so many results with your search? :o

So should I be sending to "LaudaM" or "Lauda" ?

I don't know why you get only 1 result when you searched her/his name while I get 2 pages result after. I used the search for members, my bad.

Also there's no user LaudaM aside from ~LaudaM which is a newbie. Anyway, you can pm him/her using this link https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=pm;sa=send;u=101872

Alright, i figured it out.

When you try to send a message and use the "Find Member" button, entering Lauda only gives 1 result: "Lauda".
When clicking on this name, the recipient "LaudaM" will be added.

However, when you use the "Members" -> "search for members" function with "Lauda", you get 2 pages or results.
When you click on Laudas profile and click on send message -> you get "Lauda" as recipient.

I guess that's just a visual bug caused by a name change.
But messages sent to both recipients should be delivered to Lauda.

I used this Find Members,

He is one the most popular user here so I know I can pm him/her by going to his profile. But thanks anyway.

edit
sent my message to "Lauda" entered it manually.

so Happy right now!!

Just to be clear, this isn't a visual bug.

I knew this was discussed before so I did a search for "search username" on posts made by theymos with my new tool (https://posts.ninjastic.space/) #ad and I found the post I was looking for:

Each user has a display name, which is the only name ordinary users see, and a username, which is what you use to log-in with. Almost always, they are the same.

If I change a name for reasons of appearance, then I only change the display name. The username remains reserved, the user can still login using the username, PMs can still be sent to that username, "search member" allows searching for the old username, etc.

If I change a name for reasons of privacy, then I change both the username and the display name. In this case, it is possibly hazardous to reserve the old username, since it allows someone to test for the existence of that username, possibly defeating the privacy benefit. If you're worried about being impersonated, then simply don't seek to have your username changed.

In this case, the name was changed for reasons of appearance, so only the display name was changed. That's why the original name still shows up when you use the "find members" tool.

Oh well, just been curious and with this I close this thread.
Thanks.
