Title: Help Needed - Antminer S9 Poor Performance
Post by: Psicorman on May 24, 2020, 08:40:56 AM
As a new miner i have been using nicehash recently

I have been using 1 x 1080Ti, 1 x 1060 (6gb), 2 x 1050Ti, on average i used to get around 0.00014500BTC per day.

I invested in an Antminer to try out and got a S9 13.5Th, i tested in and all i am pulling in is around 0.00008000BTC, almost 50% less than my cards,

I have followed all of Nicehash instructions and downloaded there Firmware as requested on a previous ticket, since this my antminer seems very much quiet than before so has this affected performance ?

Before my gtx cards were pulling in 0.00002699 per hour yet my antminer does 0.00001914

I have tried both algorithms that were given but both are just as bad

stratum+tcp://sha256.eu.nicehash.com:3334
stratum+tcp://sha256asicboost.eu.nicehash.com:3368#xnsub

I have got another pool from Slushpool that i may try as nicehash is not profitable at all

Something is wrong, can anyone offer advice or something else i can mine

Thanks in advance

Will

For your GPUs, are you using SHA256 or other algorithms?

Your estimated earnings based on 13.5TH hashrate is roughly 0.0001121BTC a day, subjected to the pool's fees, varience and as such. If your nicehash dashboard is showing 13.5TH, there is likely nothing wrong with your ASIC.

this is what i do not understand, i was getting more with my 4 GTX cards, even with the halving i assumed the Antmier would still give me more return than the cards, i only had 1x1080Ti, 1x1060, 2x1050Ti

with the cards      i was pulling in 0.00015000 BTC      running at  480Watts
with the Antminer i was pulling in  0.00008000 BTC     running at 1280Watts

Firmware was from NH and i had the correct algorithm

Mining Payment From Your Mining Wallet  this was for 4 hours of mining on my cards
0.00002570 BTC
£0.20

Mining Payment From Your Mining Wallet this was for 4 hours on my Antminer S9
0.00001692 BTC
£0.13

It's very unlikely that your GPUs were mining Bitcoin in the first place. GPUs are nowhere as fast as ASICs right now.

If you can check NiceHash, you should probably find that your GPUs are not mining Bitcoin but some other altcoins that has greater profitability as ASICs are not developed for that algorithm yet.

Sorry to have to be the one to tell you this, but you got all of these things confused, you don't know what you are doing.

GTX 1080 Ti alone makes nearly as much profit as antminer S9, your GPUs were not affected by the bitcoin halving by any means, the S9 was, another mistake you did was installing NH firmware, nicehash is a shady business, mining to their pool is already risky, let alone running their firmware, you should revert to the original firmware and can still mine to nicehash.

If you are using the custom firmware you should use

Code:
stratum+tcp://sha256.eu.nicehash.com:3334

Using a custom firmware like Asic.to / Aweomse miner with Asicboost enabled you will have to use

Code:
stratum+tcp://sha256asicboost.eu.nicehash.com:3368

Based on current difficulty and estimated block fees, S9 makes 0.000124 BTC a day, or 0.00002066BTC every 4 hours as opposed to the 0.00001692BTC you got, but 4 hours is not long enough to make any conclusion, however, the fact that your miner runs quietly indicates that the stupid NH firmware downclocked your miner and it's not hashing at full speed.

TL: DR

Flash the original firmware, use https://whattomine.com/ to estimate your S9 profit, do NOT compare it to anything else.

I agree with mikeywith.GPUs only mine on different algo/altcoins where mining is profitable. Since you have 4 GPUs take a look at the price of each GPU you have compare to the current price of Antminer s9 miner?

Antminer s9 is currently not profitable if you are paying Electricity cost you can mine less than $1 daily with one s9 miner compare to GPUs(Your GPU rig) that can make around $1.80(According to some calculator).

If you want to mine in Antminer s9 and increase the daily earnings you can use some custom firmware or overclocked firmware which can help to boost your hash rate up to 18TH/s.

You can find that firmware under mining-software here on the forum below.

I'm sure the 0.0001121BTC daily will increase to 0.0001495 BTC daily(Base on Cryptocompare calculator)

Yes Nicehash actually confuses many newbies because even though they are mining with GPUs they think they are mining BTC because their payouts are in BTC. I remember a buddy of mine kept saying how his Radeon R9 280X found a few bitcoin blocks back in 2017 or so. I told him that he did not find BTC blocks but instead some altcoin like ETH which converted ETH to BTC and he was paid in BTC. He got more and more confused and we just left the conversation at that.

So just keep in mind that your Antminer S9 could have a faster hashing speed but it can only mine BTC and mining BTC at a much faster speed will produce less money than mining an altcoin at a much slower speed such as ETH. Hopefully you didn't pay too much for that S9 because its currently considered outdated equipment right after the halving.
