Title: James Mattis offers scathing criticism of President Trump
Post by: squatz1 on June 04, 2020, 05:37:57 PM
Before I start on this story, I'd like to address one point that has come up time and time again - While I know that James Mattis (otherwise known as Mad Dog Mattis), Trumps former Secretary of Defense, is thought to have been fired by Trump by many. That isn't true Mattis offered his resignation to Trump and then all Trump did was expedite his departure. Maybe that is a technical firing, but the guy was resigning at first. I don't think this should have anything to do with his criticism of the President though.

Most of Mattis' statement revolved around the fact that he was accusing Trump of not even trying to unite the country together, and was happier with dividing the country against one another during a time of protest. He didn't agree with the way that Trump is using non peaceful means to breakup peaceful protesters. All in all, he pretty much said that Trumps leadership isn't mature, and that it is important for us AS A COUNTRY to unite back together as one or we're going to have issues. Here's some quotes from his speech / statement:

“Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead, he tries to divide us,” Mattis writes. “We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.”

“When I joined the military, some 50 years ago,” he writes, “I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.”

Lisa Murkowski offered her support of Mattis' criticism and hinted at the fact that she may not vote for Trump come Novemeber. Crazy, crazy times.

I think we'll soon find out that Mattis is a covert communist and has a new nickname (yapping poodle?). That is if Twitter's fascist censors let the truth through.

Seems like he made the conscious decision to not speak out about Trump (although he did make a few jokes about him at a fancy dinner).  A lot of people expected him to, and it was clear what he thought, but I assumed he'd remain silent if he didn't speak out now.

I think Trumps attacks on him are politically very bad.  The life long conservative families, especially with military ties will be the ones who are bothered the most.  And Trump needs them.  Not to mention this can't be good for our militarys morale.  Mattis is a legend.

Trump is saying some exceedingly stupid shit about Mattis, even by his own standards. He still claims to have coined his "Mad Dog" nickname, even though that was debunked a year ago.

And so Trump said he'd go to Alaska and campaign for whoever the Democrat ends up being...lol

He probably meant her opponent in the primary.

Oops, you're right.  I thought she was up in 2020 and November feels at least 2 years away.

It's a revolving door at this point. Member of Trump administration is at odds with Trump, they either resign or get fired, they then go public criticizing Trump, and finally release a book to pay for a summer home.

@TwitchySeal her support for Mattis at this juncture is very interesting, because she’s carefully positioning herself against Trump, and sending a message to her voters that she’s not afraid to take a stand against Trump’s policies.

However at the same time she’s also saying that she wants to have a cordial relationship with Trump, to secure resources for here state, which proves that she is trying to avoid a direct fight with Trump as that would be suicidal for her re-election campaign.

Lastly in my personal opinion she’s tried to play a balancing role for her own political gains, but it seems to me that her move has spectacularly backfired on her.

Murkowski also noted that while she did not support Trump in 2016, she wants to maintain a relationship with the Trump White House to deliver resources for her state.
