Title: Can someone please explain to me the point of . ..
Post by: Finetuned on November 22, 2011, 06:04:34 AM
having to start out in a newbie status.

Is it to avoid people from spamming?
In which case it is not really a good method as the fact that you must post 5 messages guarantees 5 spam messages from every new member.

Is it to filter out genuine traders from scammers?
Bypassing this would be too simple, post 5 messages and off to my scam.

Wish to build a community by having new members introduce themselves?
Doesn't help when the section is filled with scam, maybe a 1 introductory post requirement would be more suitable for this.

Can anyone else think of any other reasons why this limitation is set forth.

In case your wondering, since I have to create 5 posts, this is one of those random meaningless off the top of my head kind of things just to pass the requirement. 4 more random shit to come.

It forces you to read the newbie threads.

If you just spam and get flagged your deleted. The newbie section creates a concentrated space (pandoras box) to detect undesirables.

It's very easy, to avoid trolls

Some months ago, there were a lot of trolls that just registered an account and went all over the forum happily trolling. By forcing everyone to pass some time in the newbie area, they are mostly filterd, cause they no more can "register an account and go troll everywhere until banned, then rinse and repeat"

Consider it a troll filter. Most trolls won't deal w/ the 5 posts & x hours requirement.  Some will but most won't and that cuts down on the number of trolls and makes the mods work easier.

Nobody really cares if someone spams the newbie forum and if they do it is an easy account delete for the mods.

Considering the number of threads that are presently in the newbie forum, how hard can it actually be to contribute something remotely meaningful to five of them?

sort of agree, i am having to sit through this, but it may be worth it for members i hope to be dealing with also. i hope there will be less % of scammers because of the measures.

The time logged in mod is decent :)

I think the basic idea is that the average spammer or troll wouldn't be patient enough to post 5 times and spend 4 hours on the site just to be able to post on the main boards. Although it is a little annoying, it seems to be a decent idea and I've been on other forums which required much more posting to gain full access.

The idea is to:
- Eliminate drive-by trolling
- Introduce a cost of creating a new account once banned (since IP bans can be bypassed)
- Concentrate automated spam in one area

It solves these problems, and I think it's better than nothing. It is annoying, though, and it may end up creating the wrong kind of community. I probably wouldn't have registered if I had to go through this. Other solutions are planned for the future.
