Title: Australia post office now accepts Bitcoin
Post by: cheezcarls on June 26, 2020, 03:47:12 AM
It looks like the massive adoption of Bitcoin has begun in Australia. The Aussie citizens can now deposit BTC at the post office due to the collaboration of Bitcoin.com.au and 3,500+ post offices in Australia.

What do you think of this move guys? Do you think other countries would follow suit? Or are there other countries before Australia who have implemented this in their own post offices as well?

This was posted by CoinTelegraph: https://cointelegraph.com/news/australians-can-now-pay-for-bitcoin-at-the-post-office (https://cointelegraph.com/news/australians-can-now-pay-for-bitcoin-at-the-post-office)

I would love to see it being implemented in the Philippines as well in the near future.

I must say Australia is very friendly on Cryptocurrency!
On 4th May VeChain and Mastercard are among the heavy hitters backing the new APAC Provenance Council, focused on Australia's 76$ billion of exports to China. And now they welcoming BTC; it’s really a great sign!

Quite surprising how much sudden adoption we've been getting in just the past month alone.

  • The PayPal rumours[1]
  • Venezuelan bitcoin payments on passports[2]  ; EDIT: apparently it's now unavailable lol[4]
  • Grayscale racking up on bitcoin like there's no tomorrow[3]

And now this. Quite interesting what caused the really sudden domino effect. Also knowing that these entities aren't just your small local convenience stores. These entities are quite significant.

As for the Paypal rumors, they're currently hiring (https://www.zdnet.com/article/paypal-hiring-push-hints-at-future-cryptocurrency-support/) cryptocurrency and blockchain engineers which may be a signal for this payment processor to finally jump in.

A couple of years ago, Paypal CEO did say that Bitcoin is the biggest scam in history due to pump and dump. Now he threw off his hat and decided not to be left behind, and they realized it very much because more and more people are now shifting to Bitcoin.

Even myself, I set aside Paypal for Bitcoin almost three years ago as my main gateway for receiving payments in doing freelance stuff. I seldom use Paypal only to buy plane tickets and other few clients who doesn't have a Bitcoin wallet or balance to pay me yet.

While there's definitely a chance that this might be that they're hiring engineers for their bitcoin buy/sell feature, but then again, I'll believe it when I see it. There's also a chance that they could just be experimenting for now. Product features can easily be scrapped.

It is indeed a good move from Australia country. Their government is actually pro bitcoin because they allow such bitcoin payments in collaboration with their local exchange (Bitcoib.com.au) to make this possible. If such actions were widely used by government's different agencies then we could see positive bitcoin adoptions.

Yes, we already had the same news recently for Croatia

Croatian post office also accepts bitcoin and some other crypto currencies.
I'm sure other countries and post offices in the world will also accept bitcoin in the near future,  including Philippines 😁

One thing that has to be noted here is that this doesn't seem like government initiative. This was a result of Bitcoin.com's (Roger Ver's company btw lmao not that that has anything to do with it) collaboration with them, so unless your local exchanges are willing to step up for the community, this doesn't really set a precedent for other post offices to follow suit.

This is good news nonetheless because we can never have enough room for adoption, but I'm getting the impression that some people think government agencies are actively seeking out Bitcoin payment options, and that's not really the case here.

Could it be that they're trying to suppress the actual volume of BTC and get the authorities accumulate and centralize large amounts? It's very weird that they all suddenly "wake up" after so long, makes me doubt their real motive.

Remember that Bitcoin has also been part of the Goldman Sachs conference (https://news.bitcoin.com/goldman-sachs-bitcoin-cryptocurrency/) this year and appeared in Land Rover's commercial. Almost looks like a plan on a massive scale.

That was a great move for Austria, adopting bitcoin in their country is the best choice, we should implement it in our own country so we could get benefit from it in the future and even in the current situation. I have seen many articles about accepting bitcoin in their own country, it seems like bitcoin is really great because there are already many countries that are using it right now. Good move for the government.

There is fake news about the crypto news about the Philippines saying that President Duterte has approved the bitcoin in the Philippines but there are many feedback from the citizen of Philippines that it is not true because using of bitcoin is not familiar from them and they don't know how does it work. Only a few people are using it for some crypto activities and online transactions.

There are more and more signs that Bitcoin is ready to take off. A few days ago PayPal and now the fact that Australian Post Offices are supporting Bitcoin is encouraging news.
In my country there are some forex exchange shops that offer this feature. However Australia is on whole other level. Keep it up!!

@mk4 PayPal is not going to launch support for bitcoins as of now, because they’re more interested in utilising Blockchain technology, and they may soon launch a PayPal backed crypto (basically another stable coin). @cheezcarls if you read PayPal CEO statements carefully then you’ll realise that he has no intention of integrating bitcoins on PayPal, but he’s keen to use the blockchain technology, and that’s something worth waiting for if it can help in reducing the transfer fees.

The Australian community was the opposite of Bitcoin but now that they are accepting Bitcoin it is a much better move for their country Bitcoin Many Profitable Currencies Bitcoin's investment will play a very helpful and effective role in improving the economy of their country. Bitcoin will be integrated with other exchange sites and will be able to replace Bitcoin as easily as Fiat.

Another bitcoin adoption! It is more likely that other countries will also adopt this concept that they will accept bitcoin in their post office for a much faster and efficient transaction. Especially that there are lot of country right now who are engaging in the use of bitcoin as our technology is continuously advancing.

Let's just wait for a more adoption of bitcoin not only in this post office, but also as a mode of payment in any transaction no matter how big or small a transaction is. I read some news about another adoption of bitcoin which is the expanding of bitcoin ATM globally. Let's support and help the promotion even in a simple way.

I think this is a great small step forward. I remember when a similar thing happened in Croatia, and it also seemed like big news, but I'm sure it wasn't a game-changer even on the level of Croatia. The post office is something more significant than, say, a café or a shop because it's a governmental institution which signifies a mild approach towards cryptos from the government. I am glad for Australia, and I do hope it's one step that will lead to many more. It seems to be a big step specifically for this country as previous news regarding Australia and Bitcoin seem neutral or negative, I don't see anything bullish from the past.

Yep, people have been speculating about PayPal releasing a cryptocurrency product for a while now, but this was last year. While I still heavily doubt that PayPal will be allowing the buying or selling of bitcoin or at least allowing bitcoin on their platform, let's not take everything they said as sort of "set in stone". It's not like just because they haven't mentioned bitcoin last year, it doesn't automatically mean that they can't decide upon utilizing bitcoin this year.

But in the end, we're pretty much just speculating. 🤷‍♂️

This is very erroneously worded, it is not about any BTC deposits, but about the possibility of buying BTC in post offices. A similar thing exists in Croatia in some 50+ offices across the country, but it's just about buying BTC, they do not offer any other service for now.

A similar service is also available in several EU countries :

Liechtenstein’s official post office is offering fiat-to-bitcoin exchange services through a partnership with Swiss blockchain company Värdex Suisse, a regulated payment service provider based in Switzerland.

Austrian postal services provider Österreichische Post has confirmed it is now offering offline exchange trading for bitcoin, ether, dash and litecoin in a collaboration with Bitpanda, a Vienna-based cryptocurrency exchange. (2017)

To complete a Cash withdrawal with proof of identity in Polish mail via the payment operator Payment Technology, you’ll need to go to „Wallets” tab, choose PLN currency and next choose: „Post Office Withdrawal”. Then type in the amount of PLN you wish to withdraw. The amount cannot contain pennies. You can withdraw up to 15 000 PLN once. To receive your cash go to the Polish Post Office near you. You can choose from over 4,5 thousand Post Offices. Remember that you won’t be able to complete the withdrawal in postal agencies.

It is possible to buy BTC in Switzerland via SBB ticket machines for years :

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) started the sale of Bitcoin as a pilot project two years ago and as of Thursday, it has become a regular service. About 6,000 customers buy the cryptocurrency at SBB ticket machines, half of them buy it regularly.

As you can see, Australia has not made any revolutionary move, such things have been quite normal in Europe for years.

I hope to see more adoption in near future.

Bitcoin adoption on a large scale makes bitcoin more popular and more widely known. The adoption of bitcoin at the Australian post office are some examples of the Australian government being serious about using bitcoin technology.

Australia recognizes that future technologies such as bitcoin need to be developed. Australia is one step ahead of the surrounding countries. Australia has cryptocurrency laws that are well regulated. The local government continues to work to create a safe & better place for the crypto community.

Bitcoin is becoming available in a lot of countries and a lot of companies are starting to accept bitcoin as a great asset. This is surely good news as Australia is now accepting bitcoin even at these post offices. I'm not expecting that even the government is going to accept bitcoin when it comes to some countries for sure bitcoin is not year acceptable as it is not yet popular or trusted by some of the countries. Recently a lot of articles online when bitcoin is becoming more accessible and accepted in a lot of countries I'm thinking it is possible that in the past year's bitcoin is surely going to be used in a lot of transactions or a top digital currency that is used.

Compared to our countries which bitcoin is not really having a good image I think it would really take a long time before bitcoin is completely accepted as a digital currency. There are already digital currencies that are used in some of the stores here but not cryptocurrencies as they are not handled by big companies.

Crypto currency in Australia is now legal and we can expect to it that it will be having a big improvement in many factors of being a rich country. The first factor that can be affected by crypto currency is their financial system because their currency can be replaced by crypto currency so that they don't need to waste a lot of materials to make a paper money. Second is their way of living because trading will be an option for them if they don't want to take job outside of their house and the crypto community there will be bigger than before.

I love to hear how Bitcoin began to spread his wings all over the globe. This move could literally followed by some other countries. The post office is a huge and important sector for different deliveries having the convenientto accept btc as payment is greatly add to the soaring adoption of btc.

I hope they also extend it to some other coins like eth and other that are massively used on transaction. Im not gonna vouch for xrp but as long as they play fair in this then there is no problem. Only Australia right? I wonder whose next in line giving some acceptance of btc.

As @Lucius mentioned they do not accept Bitcoin!
It's about citizens able to buy Bitcoin (using their local money). And the fact people can buy bitcoins doesn't make a country crypto-friendly as several users say here. Crazy people, as soon bitcoins can be bought or used they think the country is friendly to BTC. For sure we don't have the same definition for something friendly

Nowhere does it say that people can pay for their stamps in BTC. Only people here believe that.

I believe that Post office nowadays has no really big function at all right?because of internet the sending of letters and other works offers by post office are really having a hard time so accepting crypto means they are offering something different from normal.

I'm glad to hear this kind of news because this is something we've been waiting for. I'm sure now that they are implementing it in Australia, many companies will also implement the use of bitcoin in their stores. things are going our way this year despite this deadly pandemic. We don't hear some exchange hacking nowadays which is good and every news about bitcoin is only great news like this one. Although this will not affect the price of BTC in the market today, this is something we can say a way to make that happen in the future.

Nobody is reading the discussion or visit the link posted in the original post or what?

Reading is time-consuming, and many forum users don't want to spend their time on such trivial things - even if the thread only has 2 incomplete pages. But as I already wrote, the OP was definitely wrong that BTC can be deposited at the post office, users can buy it with cash or EFTPOS (electronic funds transfer at point of sale).

The difference between the services offered by some post offices in the EU and the Australian post office is that some only allow the purchase of BTC, while others offer only the sale of the same.

I can agree that such actions do not mean that a country is completely crypto friendly, but that is only slightly more liberal than the others. It is a well-known fact that such jobs generate considerable income, so it should come as no surprise that crypto exchange offices are expanding their offer through post offices. This is not about the state starting something on its own, but about private companies that expand their business in this way.

I am glad to see some clarification regarding the purchasing process. Thanks DdmrDdmr.

Even though I agree with the overall sentiment regarding a cumbersome process and high fees, I continue to appreciate that buying and selling locations are continuing to expand - and surely some people are going to find out about bitcoin because it is being offered for purchase (or able to sell in other locations) through seemingly official channels.

Many of us likely realized that a lot of direct p2p channels had dried up last year when local bitcoins became more strict on many locations, yet even though premiums may have existed through some of that p2p exchanging, at least the KYC/AML had opportunities to be lower, and we are likely going to continue to be looking out for the expansion of p2p options - which may take a decent amount of time, including the onboarding of more people who are ready willing and able to transact in BTC.. which comes after becoming a HODLer rather than from starting out as a nocoiner.  In other words, it is will be easier to attempt to convince a HODLer to directly exchange some BTC than a nocoiner who has no clue about any of it, including not having a wallet.

We know that Australia is crypto friendly country, but accept bitcoin on post offices is a big move. Post office is a government organization and that's why we might say this is a massive adoption for bitcoin. Who know if Australia start accept bitcoin in other sectors as well if post office plan work good. I believe now even general people from Australia will know about bitcoin when they will go post office for something. It would motive for others crypto friendly countries as well. Hope soon we will see more adoption of bitcoin worldwide.

This is some cheery news to the community, I should think so. We need more outlets outside Australia to join in the queue.

A couple of years ago, Paypal CEO did say that Bitcoin is the biggest scam in history due to pump and dump. Now he threw off his hat and decided not to be left behind, and they realized it very much because more and more people are now shifting to Bitcoin.
Gradually, the chickens are coming to roost. It remains Warren Buffet to renounce his scam disposition on Bitcoin. They were too quick to conclude on something they didn't have a complete grasp of.

It looks like the massive adoption of Bitcoin has begun in Australia. The Aussie citizens can now deposit BTC at the post office due to the collaboration of Bitcoin.com.au and 3,500+ post offices in Australia.

What do you think of this move guys? Do you think other countries would follow suit? Or are there other countries before Australia who have implemented this in their own post offices as well?

This was posted by CoinTelegraph: https://cointelegraph.com/news/australians-can-now-pay-for-bitcoin-at-the-post-office (https://cointelegraph.com/news/australians-can-now-pay-for-bitcoin-at-the-post-office)

I would love to see it being implemented in the Philippines as well in the near future.

Same here, it would be awesome if Phippines Post office will implement such adoption but I doubt that it will happen soon because as far as I know Government offices are the last one to implement trending stuff unless it is really a necessity.

Well, it is Australia today and soon after we will see more countries to adopt Bitcoin as payment mode.  Aside from that, Bank of America had already declared that Bitcoin along with ether has been recognized as cash advance (https://youtu.be/a5uhHDnWubo?t=72).

That's okay. Someone has said something like this about their country as well, but I can't remember which country was that again. They said their citizens can exchange their Bitcoin at the embassy. These are the type of news I always like to see and not the ones of how the government is planning to place a ban on cryptocurrency, which is very bad.

But, it's not like this in my country and I do wish that the government in my country will consider, although I do know that there are lots of things we are facing and that might be why no one is looking at that direction for now.

I hope that, every rich and powerful country will legalize BTC very soon and we will able to make all kind of payments through Bitcoin. it will make our life easier.

In my understanding, those under-developing countries will be having more possibilities for adopting bitcoins before developed counties. Some 3/4 years back itself Swiss post offices started adopting bitcoins/selling bitcoins and now Australia and Japan must be the first counted legalizing bitcoins and USA is always a crypto friendly country. From all these, I guess it is time for tier-2 and tie-3 countries to think about bitcoins for their people better life style.

It is a great news to know that Australia have already implemented such actions of accepting Bitcoin usage at their post offices. Even though it was simple for me to think, it is still a great move done towards adaptation of Bitcoin because by that way, people will get into using Bitcoin not just the people who have already using it but as well as the other people might get encourage to use and acquire Bitcoin because of that.

Well mate, I am also looking forward for that thing to happen in the Philippines but I think that was still too far to happen since there are still lots of issues that are in need to be attended first before pursuing to adapt Bitcoin usage in the Philippines. Not just Bitcoin but as well as all the other cryptocurrencies. But still I am not losing hope for that day to come. It is just that time will tell when will that thing can happen. Let us just see.

It is up to the regulatory frameworks and the extent to which the population accepts payment in digital currencies.
It is the extent of acceptance and thus the achievement of economic profits, so long as there are regulatory laws and regulatory frameworks, everything is possible and acceptable.
Many countries will be like Australia over time, and in 10 years a lot will change.

Wow, very good progress.
With the increasing adoption of Bitcoin and its use, the BTC itself will increasingly have value, be more reliable, and can also increase the value of BTC itself. In addition, it would be possible for other countries to adopt this kind. However, it might be more difficult if in a country that has not legalized BTC as a means of payment. As we know, BTC is not only available for the digital assets but also for payment method. This will really be meaningful and easy if the BTC is available to be a payment method in most countries again.

Australia is also a first world country just like United state, Canada, New Zealand, and etc., so it is approach towards the adoption of bitcoin is not that hard for them. This another mass adoption is really what we need to help the growth of the use of bitcoin in many transactions or activities in the market.

Open-minded countries like Australia are much more likely to have improvements in their economy especially that bitcoin is a huge factor in making so much impact in the market. Hoping that this post office is not the only thing that Australia look forward into that use of bitcoin.

Damn, I love Australia so much. They really understand the benefits which Bitcoin can bring to them. Not only that, this implement can help bitcoin to become more famous and gain more attention from the people. More people will have a chance to interact with new tech and the blockchain will soon become an important part of the world. Haha its just my imagination which may never happen. I hope that in the near future, our people in my country have a opportunity to use bitcoin not just on the Internet but also in the real life. Rules and laws strictly ban bitcoin and dont allow it to be used a payment method right now.

Keyword: may be
The article also says you'll be able to buy bitcoin at post offices, and that'd be kind of neat if it came to fruition.  Not that I'd be able to take advantage of any of this since I don't live in Australia, but it would definitely be some progress toward mass adoption.  Then again it could well be a service that disappears if few people use it--and that's always a possibility, just like all those retailers that stopped accepting bitcoin after finding out that there isn't a big demand to spend it.

Still, kudos to the Aussie PO for at least considering this.  I don't think the US is going to see something like their post office selling bitcoin anytime soon.  And they probably should, since they're on the brink of bankrupcy as it is.

I agree, this is a very good and forward progress we should have seen happening a while back. In that respect, it is all to do with how the population reacts to this new kind of thing (obviously it's +ve) and it just goes to show that in order for this to happen the authorities need to push forward after taking care of the frameworks etc.
I would like to know if this is just a pilot test, and whether this is something other countries will engage in.

This was a news that got published an year ago. From the news that is being published the service acceptance is through post billpay. This is being done through a fee of 5.9% which is something close to the exchanges and ATMs that support bitcoin deposit and withdrawal. Postal service into bitcoin shows the public ventures participation. Hope this gets followed by more public ventures understanding the need of common people.

I see this as a much needed improvement to Bitcoin and crypto-currency adoption, Australia has always been a country that I consider to be free spirited, and the government aren't to Ridgid, honestly speaking it would take more than another country slowly adopting crypto-currency before other join, I believe some current government in sit who has no interest in crypto-currency first has to leave the sit, my country for example may not adopt Crypto-currency on a national level on till the present government vacates the sit.

For sure it's good news for the Australian residents but we know all are not happy about such decisions who doesn't know the true picture of bitcoin. This was one year back when this post was made and some newbie just bumped up this thread but according to me such things should be avoided to possible extent.
