Title: Friendz, Please learn before you earn
Post by: CoinLearn on March 22, 2014, 08:55:09 AM
In my short stint of running www.CoinLearn.org I have encountered some stunning facts. One of them is some people are posting their private key instead of bitcoin address !!!

2 days ago while I was making the payout I was stopped by the wallet with a notification that I am sending coins to non-existent addresses. A little investigation revealed that those are not bitcoin address, but private keys. Interestingly, in some of the cases the bitcoin addresses related to those keys were just after the keys in my DB. As I dont store any other info of the user, it is not possible for me to communicate and inform those users about their mistakes. But I am sure, most of them are on BitcoinTalk and reddit. So, if u r reading this, please be careful next time while availing bitcoin services. Private keys are never ever to be disclosed. Services require only your Bitcoin address, which does NOT contain '-'.

+1

One may loose his/her coins by this kind of a little, but deadly mistake. Thanx for sharing.

How people can post their private key instead of bitcoin address??? They don't look the same, do they?

I find that hard to believe, especially if they are using the Official Wallet.
It is pretty straight forward.

Private keys generally don't contain '-' either?  Are you sure they are private keys, and not blockchain.info identifiers?

Strange fishy thread.

I find some hero member's comments are immensely irresponsible across the board. In another instance I found a hero member Vod is calling a normal, straight forward game a SCAM !!! Here what do u get fishy sir ? What OP meant is either private key or blockchain.info identifier... but NOT an address for sure.

He's saying it's fishy because it absolutely is. A bizarre "public service announcement" and oh by the way come to my website advertised in the same post to earn free bitcoin. I 100% agree with him, this is bizarre.

Even if I accept your argument, I would call it advertisement, NOT fishy/suspicious. I dont find anything to dupe us to take away our money through this post !!! Lets be civil. Peace.

Cha-ching.. you have solved the riddle.
people think that blockchain.info indentifiers are their username, which just like paypal, is the address to send it to.

now what makes me laugh is coinlearn cannot distinguish between  privkey or a blockchain.info identifier, and he is suppose to be teaching noobs..

now i realise why educationalists spend 3+ years in universities..... just to be certified to teach others

...I have issues with your disregard towards 'noobs'. People learn from mistake. I did. Proof ? Here it is => https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=474969.0

It seems that there is a confusion with this part of my post. Probably I put it in the wrong way. But I guess, even your 'noobs' know private keys dont contain '-'. My DB contained some strings with '-' and it seems those are blockchain.info identifier. Private keys are never ever to be disclosed. is a non-related different sentence to this fact.

I hope the cloud is now clear.

And yes ...someone raised question about advertising my service. Yes I'm doing it. Everywhere I do it through constructive post and keeping my link in the signature. Here the service reference was related and hence I posted it... Be assured, I'll continue to do the same in future too. AMEN !!!

It's fishy because it's a largely incoherent thought linking to an external site that, presumably, was created by the OP and judging by the domain name is meant to 'educate' individuals on the proper use of bitcoin.

Excuse me !!! There is nothing fishy here. Some people are actually nosy and find fishy smell in every normal thing. Above, OP has already cleared air. We can call RIP to the confusion now.
