Title: can someone claim your telegram username when not used anymore?

my kid was playing with my phone and accidentally dropped it to our pond.
now i have to use new phone and has to install telegram app. will my old telegram username be claimed by someone else?

If nobody uses it, you are still free to use it.

You can login to the same telegram account with the old login credentials will all the chats and other backup as before.So no need to worry.

Kind of misleading title though.

From my personal experience, as long as you remember the number registered and have access to it, then you shouldn't have a problem.

If you can't log in to your old account, you gotta wait a few months until telegram deletes it as an account with zero activity. After that, your username becomes free again. However, you can log wherever you are. The main thing is your phone number or an open app on the other device.
