Title: What to do with a barking dog
Post by: XarXymtroa on July 07, 2020, 05:03:34 PM
My German Sheppard "Doc" is a family member to us.  He is getting old now- 5 years of age and obese for his age.
He now is barking all the time and not sure what to do.   I do not want to put him down because it would bring much sadness for my family.

What do you do for your barking dog?

Is this happening just only in the recent days or it has been always like this? You can train your dog to be quiet if he is having barking behaviour all the time but it maybe very harder for 5 year old dog.If it got this issue recently then there might be any medical issue in its body so in that case you need to visit a vet as soon as possible.

I do not own a dog or anyone who has died in my family. I believe that your dog is subject to some problems and possibly pain. Therefore, it is better that you present it to a veterinarian and it is possible that he will be able to find a solution for it.

Re: training your dog to be quiet, I agree. But if you don't know how to train your dog, then hire someone else (or a professional) who knows how to do it instead.

Re: possible medical issues, it's totally possible and this should be the most realistic thing to do, before even considering "putting your dog down" for barking all the time. :o

get a "shocking" collar.
It is activated with the barks.
My neighbor had a fucking annoying dog that barked all the time.
I asked them to do something, they bought a collar, the dog stopped barking the following day.
Now it is quiet.

Hopefully, the dog isn't barking for a reason.  :/

The best advice is to go to a vet and make sure there is nothing wrong with the dog physically, before you try the shock collar.

In that case, it was anxiety to protect the garden from every single bird that wanted to land on the trees and 8ft boundary fence.

If all else fail, you've got to bring in the big guns... either watch the "Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan" (great show for dog lovers who need help), or contact him directly perhaps for his services. 8)

The Barking might be that they want to communicate and it can mean different things depending on the situation.

As much as shock collars work for some dogs,Shock collars can cause pets harm and may make dogs aggressive, especially if they associate the person or animal they are barking at with the pain.
Just go to the vet to know exactly what's wrong.

why instead of asking us if you really love the Dog you must go with the expert because as what you said He is getting obese and maybe that made Him Stressful .

So expert opinion is much better than asking us here.

I have a Dog all my life but in my experience Dogs only Barks when they are feeling someone near the territory (other elements or other people)

Worst advice possible...

Keep a spray bottle filled with water nearby. Every time the dog barks, spray it in the face with water. It’ll get the hint fast.

Perhaps if you have a lot of available ground, try to move him outside and change his surroundings a little bit and see from there. You can also go to a professional vet and seek medical care in case he would need to take something to make him calm down.

Get a consultation through a Vet, they can give you appropriate suggestion of what to do for something like that.

Best advice you can get is here in quote, OP
I believe any dog can be trained, no matter what age it is - its just a matter of time and effort
If you haven't trained your dog at this point I assume you have 0 knowledge in this area so you should really find a person who know how to do it

He barks from anxiety is what the vet told me, something common with his breed.  A shocking collar is out of the question.
We have a small apartment and maybe he just wants a yard to run around in and make his bathroom.

Well, the barking stopped. But isn't the collar a bit too big to stop the f*****g?

You put a dog down because he's sick and suffering, not because he barks too much. Put him up for adoption.

It is not the best solution as the dog is going to suffer.
There is a reason that barks, maybe he smells something or it feels pain and it barks.
You just have to find the reason that causes the bark and then it is going to stop.

Not really for such an old dag, because it seem the barking issue is only in the recent days and also you should notice the obese part which maybe a medical issue with the dogs so it is necessary to find the doctor and treating him will ease the condition.

Check your dog and you can say "quiet" but be careful not to shout or yell to him since it might think that you are barking along with him. Check also the environment, there might be people passing or other animals that he's barking on. But if he keeps on barking without any reason, it must be a red flag that he needed a medical help . If so, seek your veterinarian immediately.

So have you realized how can you rectify the situation for your dog? Why is it only now that he's showing the anxiety after 5 years of living with you? I guess there's other reason for that. You need to find where he's coming from because your neighbors will get annoyed with you. And I do understand them, because I don't want a dog barking all day long also.

for some reason i actually love the sound of dogs barking. i think it's because my house is always so silent.
