Title: Win10 vs HiveOS - 262MHs@1050W vs. 259MHs@1350W
Post by: ArtSmart on July 27, 2020, 10:48:16 AM
Hello,

I am preparing to switch my 4GB rigs to Linux based OS, but have this situation as described in subject.

9x470 GB on Win10 gives me 262MH/s @ 1050W on the wall. HiveOS with same OC, and downvolting gives less with much much higher consumption - 259MH/s @ whooping 1350W and cards are very hot. What I am doing wrong? Maybe there is any tricks to lower consumption?  ???

Its because Windows handles voltage of AMD cards more effectively. You have to use something like OhGodaTool for Linux to even get close, which HiveOS doesn't. I ran my entire farm on Windows because of the power savings with AMD. Note, It's not as bad with Nvidia cards.

Ohhhh, thats bad news! :(

And why you switch? I can mine with 4GB cards on windows up to epoch 370.

You do have OhGodATool in HiveOS, it is just called wolfamdctrl.

There is no reason power consumption between Windows and Linux to be different (except for differences in the code being executed by the GPU because of different miner and/or OpenCL compilation). I wouldn't expect them to be too different if you are using the same miner in both.

Have you enabled "aggressive undervolting" option in the OC profile?

You have to make sure that the GPUs are honoring the OC profile. Use tools like "sensors" to check GPU core voltage (apt-get update && apt-get install lm-sensors)

Those who wrote above, they simply don't understand or don't know how to achieve this in Hive OS.
You can get exactly the same consumption as Windows or so.
My 8 card rigs has 242 MH/s on TeamRedMiner and consume about 1080W from the wall by wattmeter (+/- 50W). But it's summer time without proper airflow so up to +50W I'm get as present from physics (vs winter).

As mentioned @rikuu "aggressive downvoltage" is the key. But it's only first key.
Next key - control VDDCI voltage (depend of card you cam reduce power usage by additional 2-3W per card).

I started using HiveOS with NVIDIA GPUS. Now I also use HiveOS for AMD GPUS.
I have 30 rigs running under HiveOS. Only 2 of them are AMD, the others NVIDIA.
I will switch my all AMD rigs to HiveOS soon.

I tested it with 12 x RX470 4GB => 1475W at the WALL, 350.9 MH/s ETH - Phoneixminer
I tested it with 12 x RX570 4GB => 1426W at the WALL, 358.1 MH/s ETH - Phoneixminer
