Title: [ETH] tag
Post by: zasad@ on August 15, 2020, 11:21:32 AM
In mid-2012, the BTC tag was added to the forum.

I suggest adding the [ETH] tag. Ethereum is gaining immense popularity and will play an important role in the future of cryptocurrencies.
Perhaps we have had similar suggestions, but I have not found.

That would fit and a good suggestion on ethereum related forum(s) not on bitcointalk. Besides ethereum reach 1k last 2017 due to ICO and its popularity, yet theymos didn't mind to talk about it.

When did we become eth talk?

Also Ξ (Greek uppercase Xi) is apparently the ethereum symbol.
I think it looks like ≡(equivelance) so it confuses me...

I think it should be personal preference if you love eth enough then you can hotkey it, much like dollar/pound/euro are keyed that way.

Ethereum is just one of thousands of altcoins, mainly used to promote, spam and scam for worthless tokens created out of thin air. And like most shitcoins, the creator abandoned Bitcointalk 4 years ago (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=7314), after using Bitcointalk to hype his altcoin.
Not to mention it's centrally controlled and abandoned it's USP "code is law" years ago.

I'd like to have a [shit] tag though, it can be used for many coins.

Back in 2012 Bitcoin was not quite popular, so the basis of adding a custom icon is that, this is the custom forum for BTC and is primarily for discussions about the bitcoin network. An altcoins section is in place to make it more inclusive, but integrating more specific altcoins into the forum is not necessary as most of them are quite dissimilar from Bitcoin.

If popularity was given such precedence we would be having shills about DeFi projects run on the forum.

If theymos is to implement ETH tag, I guess there will be more people request to have another altcoin and thus, we will have a lot of tags. Better we keep up with bitcoin tag only as it's bitcointalk forum. I don't see any necessity too to have such altcoin tag.

There are a lot of users would definitely not agree. I know how popular it is, youre right it plays an important rule but like bl4nkcode said, its not an altcoin forum. I doubt theymos would keep this suggestion seriously.

I would understand if he will do that for grin since he accepted it as payment for copper membership but still many would disagree with the idea.

I propose that we adopt the Thai baht currency symbol, ฿, as the official bitcoin currency symbol and BTC as the official bitcoin three letter currency code.
Maybe this post is the suggestion, where the BTC started(?)

Would THIS (https://emojipedia.org/pile-of-poo/) be proper tag for ethereum here?  :D
Using it will be much more popular than using any other ethereum tag in bitcointalk forum.
Even Twitter does not have eth hashtag.

@LoyceV was right, if we add the eth tag then we should consider adding most of the altcoins too coz they are similar with ethereum.

But what if there's a ethereum tag in the forum? would it be too much? I mean we consider ethereum as the queen of the market right?

I'm sure if there will be a ethereum tag, payments from campaigns will be more in eth  :-[

Yeah and what about grin coin? That's the one Theymos seemed interested in, surely that'd be added first.

just because some altcoin has had bigger pumps and has a huge supply (that creates the bigger but meaningless market cap) doesn't mean it is gaining popularity!

besides we should never encourage centralized and mutable (reversible) blockchains with a huge premine under any circumstances. that is not only unethical but also goes against everything bitcoin and this forum stands for.

The founder of Ethereum - Vitalik Buterin already leave the forum and condone using Bitcointalk. So why will the forum Will exert effort on adding ETH default tag while it’s founder don’t have interest anymore here. Just follow other advice to create your customize emoji for ETH so that you can easily used it here. Besides that, most of the user here preferred using “ETH” tag and even in Bitcoin, “BTC” is commonly used rather than “BTC”.

I would also recommend a simple NO for this. If we agree to get a symbol for [ETH], i am afraid Craig White and his fans will jump in to get the BCH symbol  too  :D
Since, its primarliy a bitcoin forum, we don't need symbols for other altcoins.

Sometimes the unique vision of our environment completely misplaces us from where we are. (It happens to all of us)

A forum (off/on line) is still a space where you express yourself  with freedom of thought. In this case, "bitcointalk/Meta" is a bitcoin digital space.

But for a moment imagine being in a forum of ... mmhh! There are so many examples that I don't want to be "myself" who is now diametrically misplaced with my example;

So, just write it, the tag 1 698472, every time we need it, I am a bitcoin lover, but I think I have used its tag maybe once, it really can be zero, but it could be more. I don't remember it, I hadn't considered it important, in fact it seems common to see it there, but anyway, I don't think it will empower my post or make it better, but actually if it wasn't there it would be very strange.

Lol then this forum must be called Cryptoforum or be a rip-off of a scam/trash forum (if you wanted to name this like that... ew) made by yobit :D Bitcoin bbcode is enough and adding an altcoin would simply imply adding other famous alt as well such as XRP, DOGE (for gamblers), and many more. Would that be pleasing to the forum's readers? No! Even I myself aren't often use the Bitcoin tag, only if it follows a certain number indicating a certain price.

There are a lot of better tags that can be adopted by the forum and can even make their own one.

From my point of view if the admins implement the Ethereum symbol in the forum basically other alt hodlers will demand other cryptocurrencies such as Tether, Monero, Litecoin, Doge to be included to their symbols option when creating the post. Basically this would be an endless demand of altcoin users trying to add the altcoin they love to the forum which I don't think would be beneficial for the forum. If such symbols are added I don't think most of the newbies seeing the symbols would know instantly what crypto you are talking about and it could lead to a lot of misunderstanding just by using that symbol.
