Title: Getting 5 video cards to work on Z68AP-D3
Post by: Mobsy on March 23, 2014, 12:13:35 PM
Hello guys.
So I am new at this cryptocurrency stuff and I tried to make my first rig.
I got 1 x 7970 ghx ed from sapphire from my old comp will be considered 280x from now on
        2 x 280x vapor x sapphire
got   2 x 290 gigabyte windforce couple weeks ago.

My mainboard  Gigabyte Z69AP-D3 has 5 slots: 1pci-1x, 1pci-16x, 1pci-1x, 1pci-1x and 1pci-4x.

http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4015#ov

I am using an ivy bridge processor, I updated bios to before UEFI version.

I got myself 5 powered usb risers and here comes trouble:

only 4 of them work, got the 5th one tested @ service and I was told defective pcb.

But I say hey I can still put one card in the pci-4x so let's try that.

Only worked with 5 cards once (used a short in the last pci-1x slot) but after system locked in windows when I started miner with wrong
settings (mixed cards, different order resulted in crashed miner with locked system) it did not work again. After reboot it would not work
again. I got the card out of the pci-4x slot, tried with only 4 cards. Works on every slot, every combination.

The mainboard configuration only allows for 1 video card to be inserted in the pci-4x slot when using risers for the others.

Atm I got 3x280x and 1x290 working ok.

but if I put board nr. 5 in pci-4x slot it is not detected by windows.

Should I try making a better wire to short it?

After reading/trying all sort of combos for 2 days I have to turn to asking around for some pointers...

Thank you for reading  :)
