Title: How do you guys tackle information overload?
Post by: daobingsu on September 17, 2020, 11:27:08 AM
Usually, when it comes to cryptocurrency investments, I go through the following steps

1) General research to find out about any new coins to invest in
2) Preliminary research to see if the coin is legit or worth investing in
3) Ongoing research to find out market events that can impact a coin's price

Step 2 is rather straight forward but the one I have an issue with is #1 and #3. There is just so much information going around that I end up just sticking to the tried and tested ones like Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.

Do you guys have any suggestions or workflows on how to tackle information overload?

Does anyone use a news reader for example. I thoroughly enjoy inoreader to help me collate all the news that interests me. Is there such a thing for cryptocurrencies?

Personally, I do it the old (school) fashion way, I have my pen and paper ready always, and then I write down what new coins that I wanted to invest. And then I move it to a notepad or Word document and write down as many information I can get from the Internet.

I think to remove yourself from information overload, filter out projects that you wanted to invest, perhaps 2-3 at a time so that all the data that you are going to get will simply stick to your mind before you make your final decision. And then repeat the process again until you get like 5 good investments in your portfolio. Perhaps the problems lies with too much projects you want to invest in the first place. So take it slowly, best of luck to your investment journey.

You can't have them all. Research obviously takes time. If you're willing to look for a reputable project, using your time to research is a must and surely will more often than not turn into a waste of time.

How do I tackle the overload? Well, don't rush investing in a project. The only one who's going to lose in this situation is you. Take a few days or even weeks, research the coin properly, stay up to date with the news and ANNs (if there are any) on BTCTalk and there'll be no more overload. In time, you'll have enough knowledge to notice when something seems to be wrong.

My thoughts exactly. OP is probably rushing it and thinking he needs to finish reading this project at a specific time because there are more projects lined up.

@daobingsu how many whitepapers do you review every week? If it's 10 or more, try skimming each of them first. Separate the projects that interests you then read further. Before doing that, you must have your own basic standards on what projects you think is good in the long term.

I'm not really a fan making an investment to a coin other than bitcoin. I'm not telling you that I'm a professional in terms of investment but I know some of the things about the market movement so I have no idea when is the right time to buy bitcoin and sell bitcoin.

For now, making an investment with other coins I don't really listen to the people to my surroundings and one of the things I could do is making an investment at my own risk.

What are the things unusually do before making an investment?.

Read a lot of things related to this coin.
Keep updated about the news on this coin.
Use the buy low and sell high movement.

Don't get carried away by the statement of other people.

We are the same here. When I got burned with the ICO projects, I stopped investing on new ones. Though I lost not huge money but for me, it is already significant amount. So like for example right now, the hype is DeFi. I am just looking at projects, reading them and checking the background but not investing on them. And from what I am seeing, a lot of these DeFi projects are just crap, based on my assessment. So I guess, we will be seeing only few of them that can survive.

I shared this during my recent interview on the forum;
Someone should only invest in what they are actually interested in, special education cannot grow genuine interest. This may be a bad strategy as it limits your portfolio.
Rather than doing research to find out about coins to invest in, I would look for projects that actually interest me, this would help you avoid information overload as you only stick to what you have knowledge on or have interest in understanding. Of course, interest would not always result into investments. A project can have an attractive idea but no feasible road map to realize that. This would then bring the investor to the second and third points you mentioned; preliminary research and market analysis.

There is just so much information going around that I end up just sticking to the tried and tested ones like Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.
Sticking to tried and tested coins is a somewhat safe strategy, but, the mistake I think investors make is using Market Capitalization as a metric to guage a project by. A cryptocurrency making it into the top 50 or 10 list by MC is not an indicator of a good investment (the list has shuffled over the years). One would still need to do layers of research to determine which is worth investing in.

My ways to tackle information overload such as:
1. I just do what really i interested.
2. I add my knowledge about something that i interested with read many articles, or research every sources which i can get.
3. When i have some bad feelings, i will ensure my self and find the answer but if i didn't find anything reason i will  stop it.
4. Make many discussions with seniors, the professionals, and others to get their experience.

Thats all my ways to tackle overload information.

To find more information, you can often visit this forum and make it a habit to ask the seniors in the forum to make sure that the steps you take are correct and do not have a bad impact in the future.

For number 1, I don't invest in new coins listed on the exchanges because that coin can get manipulations from the investor. I prefer to choose the other coins which have stable movements or at a low price.

For number 3, I will look at the coins with a red candle, so I think I can find some potential coins that can increase later. But that is not always helping me to find the coins, and sometimes, I need to spend more time to find the right coins.

When you do such a broad research for a project or a coin or whatever the best way to prevent information overload is to be selective. Filter out all that jargon and also get info from reliable sources too. These days getting info is difficult so you have to cut out the none-sense early on.

For me, I prefer investing in those currencies that have been tried and proven successful, nor do I prefer investing in new tokens because most of them are failed projects and aim to quickly profit and then disappear, as happened with many of them already.
In any case, you can get rid of the information overload by focusing on one thing only, for example, you can focus in your search list on the project team, if the project team has a good reputation and has successful past experiences, this gives a lot of success to the project, a good team follows up The currency project and its continuous development is not satisfied with just inserting the currency in one of the exchanges and everything ends.

News sites will be helpful to find out the new crypto projects then we can choose the projects by your preliminary researching way.IMHO buying the coins once it hits the exchange is the best idea even if you see highly potential coin because for sure the token's price will be dumped initially so you can get the tokens which equalizes the discount but primarily we can save our capital from scam projects.

I will personally do research to continue in as much detail as possible to confirm that information, and I wouldn't easily believe it before doing research if there are new coins on the exchange or anything crypto-related.
don't be easy to believe and don't be too hasty before acting and always learn from other experiences and problems that have occurred in the crypto world so that you don't easily believe and get lost.

Chunk it down into more manageable fragments.

I've seen far too many people lose their money because they were dealing with too much at once, and didn't have the time to perform their due diligence.

Obviously there's such a huge number of projects out there right now, that's simply not possible to become an expert in all of them prior to investing—either because there isn't enough information available, or you just don't have the time.

I try to just stick to an agenda of researching 3-4 topics for 15 minutes (or more) each per day, to ensure I know enough not to get ripped off, and to get a general idea of what the project is.

It's worked out fine so far.

Most of the time this always happen, what to do is to check all information i.e (the  coin to be considered)  for the first time, and after rank them like top 10 or of choice, so one can easily centered on the 10 and picked the best of it, though it might look stressful, but best will be gotten from it,

I am a long-term investor, I hold all my investments. After years of investing in crypto-currencies I have many coins and tokens.
I mostly work to add more of those what I already have, to make my position stronger, but from time to time I add some new
potential coin to my portfolio. New investment opportunities are everywhere around, but most interesting things comes from the
forum members here, it's how new projects draw my attention.

What I usually do is I filter out the information based on my immediate needs. If I need investment then I will jot down those I will invest on that day, then remove all the unnecessary information that I will not use. If it's trading strategies for the day then I will make my notes then use a calculator to compute stuff. Then delete or remove them from my notes once I am done. I am not the type who saves things for future use. I am the now guy I guess. I do day trading for a living and it doesn't matter if crypto goes up or down, as long as I profit from today's work.

I guess the only way you can tackle information overload is for you to do your personal research very well before carry out your coins to invest.
Some time profit making in your investment is just by the grace of God, because sometimes you may think you invest your coins in the right place  not knowing you invest in the wrong place.
What really win it all is patient. Patient sometime tackle information overload  in the area of market, where you will be hearing different kinds of price information.

News article can only help if you are looking for  latest news that can affect the price of the crypto currency that you are watching. Following it will make it easier for you to judge  what will be the price movement base on the news and if its good or bad. For latest project that they are  making an announcement or good feedbacks there are  also possibilities that they been paid for it so you cannot trust them fully if you know that they have been paid for that article.

Every one is looking for new opportunities we understand its hard to find one investment that you think can give you high earnings in the future.but its your task  as investors to find it you will only enjoy  the profit if you know you are the one looking for it and not only base on other peoples opinions.

Quite simply , you should not read all 100% of the news and Analytics that exists on the Internet. It is enough to choose 5-6 publications and sources that are conventionally reliable and, based on the accumulation of information from them, Supplement your vision of the market and update your opinion about it.
It's really a big mistake that the same beginners try to read everything in the world, which makes them even more confused. And given how much, in principle, there is now unnecessary information noise-this leads to the fact that instead of at least some assimilation of information, you start to ignore everything at all.

Prioritization is the key not to overwhelm yourself with too much information.
And your strategy is actually nice, because you can focus on what you need to do for the day.
On my end, I usually have the list of coins or tokens that I need to trade with.
So I will not forget that I still have those tokens or coins in my portfolio.
And I also put remarks opposite to it like waiting for exchange or any related info for that coin.

I am not very good at finding the latest information on projects in the crypto market. I did something as simple as the OP said. but often I am always late in seeing the market moment in motion. I often skip parties when the market is pumping. and now I anticipate all of that by buying as many assets as possible when the market does collapse.

1) General research to find out about any new coins to invest in
Agree this is the most confusing task since new coins/tokens are created on a daily basis. Perhaps you can sort the ANN thread by first post (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=159.0;sort=first_post;desc), and utilize coinmarketcap (https://coinmarketcap.com/new/). I'm afraid there is no shortcut to this task since if it's already on the news, then perhaps you have missed the train.

Spray your money into 30 different projects and pray :D That was my initial strategy when I was introduced to the crypto world, now I tend to be more level headed. Do your due diligence, choose your picks, dont follow the hype and be up to date with development regarding your picks - if they fail to deliver, move on and repeat the process.

The best way to avoid information overload is to restrict your search to few projects at a time. Reviewing too many projects simultaneously could be discouraging. Taking a project and finding out all about it, would be more productive and fulfilling.

Why is it disappointing to review too many projects simultaneously? wouldn't it be better in terms of gathering information so that someone doesn't get caught up in a scam project, because finding a good project at this point is very difficult for everyone even though a good project is still there.

I think the first thing to do when you've got so many information is do the self-research. Search on the internet, and filter it, which are true which are false. So that we can't get easily consumed by false information.

There won't be much trouble, depending on the purpose of a long or short term investment to determine which cryptocurrency should invest.
If you invest in the long term, you should look for growing projects and invest a small number of assets because they can bring big profits.
Focus on the top 20 cryptocurrencies and invest 30% of the capital, buy when these cryptocurrencies drop in price, and sell at the appropriate 30% to preserve capital. Always reserve USDT for DCA when needed.
Study a project taking into account its source code and functionality. Projects that overlap ideas with their predecessors won't be used by everyone.

If you keep up this way you will wear yourself down with too much info and less meaningful, once you have identify the project you find interesting, just head straight to their social media to follow up on all their updates, and if possible join any of their active community and see how active the team members are or how often they visit those community, you can even have a one - on- one chat with the team if possible,

Hearing from the horses mouth is much better because we have different information on the internet with contradicting opinions that will most likely get you confused.

With internet and its multiple resources, there is no avoiding any information overload, whatever the field! One just naturally learns through experience, the trusted sources, coming up with ways to naturally comprehend and filter stuff valid to us at that time. I would suggest you choose your projects, do your research, and ask for help on forums like this, but still take your own decision finally.

When you said general research, I guess that includes checking the people stated as the project team members, their background, financial status, capability to achieve the project's stated objectives, and if the team members stated really have to do with the project.if you general research doesn't include that, you need to include them.

I do not move very quickly which allows me to take it all in. If you read all the news and get all the information and you think that you should move right away, you will miss out on some information or not realize how important another one could be and all of those will make you lose a ton of money.

However if you wait around, you will be late but you will also be more ready, at that moment if you are too late then let it be, you do not have to make trades, nobody forces you to make a trade on gunpoint, miss opportunities and profits that is not a problem compared to losing money directly. However if you are not late, and you think you got all the information and you studied it very well, at that moment you could make a trade that would allow you to profit easily.

There are ways to cut out noise i the space, when you see a new project, add it to your watch list, then look at those covering it and investors in it, if you see some of these big names behind the project then you are sure the team is real if not look at the twitter influencers shilling the project, if is someone you trust then good, just wait fro the IEO or IDO, or wait for the right price on exchange.

I am part of a investment pool group in telegram and whenever a new project is talked about there or wanted for a pool and i look into that project. Being careful in terms of investment is very necessary to anticipate losses, we have to study and filter various information and offers that are always tempting apart from that, we also have to take risks with our choice of freelance and I personally always choose new projects that get the most attention and conversation but it would be better if we quickly made a decision so as not to be left with a big opportunity that could change a fate.

For me, a great indicator of the future success of the project is the fact of great interest in the project from large investors on the presale. Another good indicator is the lack of a bounty campaign for this project on the Bitcointalk forum.

If you have an eye on a number of projects just choose the best platform where to get the latest update. There are many platforms where you can get this information such as twitter, telegram, Reddit and etc. You don't have to have all the details but just a grasp of important information, and whether if the project is really gaining attention and has a good marketing strategy and future plans.

I don't make things more complicated, I only invest on good project and of course, that project is worth searching for. This is a must to have strategies every time we invest because this is our money and we all want to make profit on our investments.

If you think the information is already too much for you, just take a rest or better if you are already decided just invest on it and have faith or your judgement. Investing is not an easy decision, you may find it hard but as long as you have strategies and you follow it, there's a higher chance of making profit.

I also do the same as you, but in the final decision, I will definitely ask my friend who is first into the crypto world and ask his opinion, whether this coin is worthy or not. if not I also ask in the community. So in essence, after doing my research, I need more consideration. especially if you are investing in large amounts, you need to be more careful.

number 2 is more harder than 1 and 3 because this where you research deeply and as a project they will try thier best to look like they are among of the good and legit . number 1 like you said is general , you can easily find infos for the coin by a single search on google and 3 is also easy because you will only need to follow thier channels and social media to recieve updates  . it will only becomes hard if you are investing on more than one or two coins  .  you choice is also good if you want to escape all those hassel .

#1 is indeed hard to do since you might get along with those coins that were just for hypes and then ended up just getting dumped after the price surged up.
Sometimes I don't do number 3, because there are biased news articles and I don't want to believe to false claims/reports. Waste of money as well as my time.
