Title: Proposal for making these threads sticky in "Beginners & Help" section.
Post by: Cadaver20 on September 17, 2020, 05:24:50 PM
Almost every day it is seen that one or another newbie member is asking questions about merit and rank in the Beginners & Help (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0) section. The active members of the forum are answering all these questions with utmost patience.  Example:
1. Search for merits (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5275843.0)
2. What is merit and why do some people have up to thousands? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5268397.msg54983213#msg54983213)
3. How to get merit? (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5196391.0)
4. Ways of earning merit. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5216692.0)

And it turns out that the following threads are often used as a reference to answer their questions.

1. Merit & new rank requirements (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0)
2. Forum ranks/positions/badges (What do those shiny coins under my name mean?) (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178608.0)
3. FAQ: Everything you need to know about forum 'activity, account ranks and merit (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2766177.0)

So my suggestion is to stick these threads or at least one of them in the Beginners & Help (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=39.0) section. I think it will reduce the merit related question in the Beginners & Help section. If i am wrong please ignor this topic.

As much as I'm inclined towards have those thread sticked in the B&H section I'm equally on the negative side of it. I mean there will always be accounts who are lazy enough to not read those threads and create a new thread asking the same question regardless.

Yeah I think a lot are made on the meta section WHERE THOSE THREADS ARE PINNED so I don't think it'd help anything.

So I doubt it'll help here and I'm a bit against stickying threads as I think it can look untidy...

There's already four stickies in Beginners and Help which include some of the information you're posting about, but adding more stickies will probably just mean more people are less likely to read them as people get confused or just don't bother checking them out if they're bombarded with too info. Maybe some of the threads could be merged but as discussed in a recent thread we should be giving new users this info upon sign up which will avoid a lot of confusion and threads being created asking basic things.

The sticky thread should reduce more by merged a few threads together. If the sticky threads list becomes more longer then what will be much different from the general topics? Newbies will never bother to read (usually they do not read though). Some important old threads would merge together and should add some latest thread as well. For example I will prefer to sticky this [GUIDES] on Bitcointalk Index thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=4928968.0). But have doubts if newbies read it.

Half of the first page will be covered with stickys. If this comes true i would love an option to hide the stickys.
All that can be avoided with a simple Welcome message, while is more likely to be implemented.

Just a simple link in news feed for the first 7 days online should be enough.

So, you want first page of the board should be filled of sticky threads only? I would rather suggest creating chilf board under B & H in order to list all the important threads you are referring to.
There are a few guides, informative threads on that board and I think they are enough to help Beginners.

Sometimes, based on the number of such topics, newbie member may think that this is a forum about merit, and not about learning cryptocurrencies. Today's newbies are very much concerned about raising their rank, which primarily indicates their interest in making money on the forum, and not about some other knowledge. At the same time, they are very lazy to read such topics in which merits are literally distributed for nothing, just for signing their message.

I think that we ourselves are too preoccupied with the problems of newbie members, unlike the beginners themselves. An entire section of B&H exists quite happily with sufficient information. If something does not catch the eye initially, then any other information is also easily found on the forum. The proverb says “Where there’s a will there’s a way".

Me too. It is a very helpful thread. Most of newbies don't read it but some of them will do read it. It can be helpful for old members who have not known about many threads in the list.

Pinned / stickied threads are for people who need it, not for all, not for spammers, scammers, etc.

theymos. Please pin the thread "Writing a welcome message" in Meta or B&H (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5275872.0). I made my proposal about it but the community seems not support the idea.

Log-in pop-up Welcome message is more favorite by community. I think it is a good idea.

@OP,
The forum is not built for merit, it is built for bitcoin, then after long path it was opened for altcoins and some other things. Merits naturally help the forum a better place (less spam, higher quality post, more actively scam-fighting/ spam-reporting, etc.). If one need to know about merit sytem, how to earn merit, that thread Merit & new rank requirements (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2818350.0). Read that OP and scan some merited posts inside are enough.

Of course, the Welcome message (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5036308.0) can help too.

All topics you listed in OP are from lazy members who don't use Search of the forum. It is easy to find what they need for by Searching.
