Title: Electrum wallet restore
Post by: Counterfact on September 22, 2020, 03:14:18 PM
Sorry if this has been dealt with ad nauseum. However, suddenly my Electrum wallet will not accept my password- it was working one minute then not the next? Anyway, I've followed the advice in previous posts to restore from seed but its not working. I choose wallet with two factor authentication, then it requests the seed, which I input but the 'Next' does not become live. Clicking 'options' it says 'extend the seed with custom words' which doesnt seem to help. I'd be grateful if someone can help me restore this wallet.

Have you checked for definite that caps lock is not on?

What version of electrum are you using? It's possible if it's not accepting your seed that you've noted it down wrong, have you been picking words as they're suggested to you or just typing it in? As long as you've got some version of your seed there's no need to worry though!

In Electrum wallet, you don't have to know your wallet password to recover your wallet. What you need is seed.

Password is used to protect your seed. If you have seed, you don't need wallet password.

You can try to reproduce process of Wallet creation and wallet recovery:

File > New/ Restore > Choose a name for your wallet file recovery (recoverywallet, ie.) > Wallet with 2-factor authentication > Next > I already have a seed > Enter your seed > Keep or disable your 2FA wallet.

The recover process is done like that. You can test it by creating a new wallet, then try to recover it with those steps.

As @jackg said, you likely wrote down your seed inaccurately.

You can try the https://github.com/gurnec/btcrecover/blob/master/docs/Seedrecover_Quick_Start_Guide.md to recover your seed.

Hi guys, I managed to get open the wallet with the password, then tried to send the bitcoin and the password failed again. No I cant get in again!! The pass phrase and seed is correct for sure! It wont let me click 'next' when I put in the seed!
For some reason Electrum does not appear as an application, I have to launch from install wizard every time? Is that the problem?

No, in fact it is not correct.

because of this. Electrum wallet does not allow you to click Next if your seed is not correct. I am sure now you should know your problem "Inaccurate seed"

What did you mean? After you install Electrum wallet, you will have wallet icon to open it next times.

As I said above, you can try to test it by creating a new wallet (2FA or not), and try to recover that wallet from seed.

Test the process with correct seed and inaccurate seed to see how the Next button shows up!

@Counterfact
Bear in mind that the 2FA Electrum wallet is different from the Standard wallet Electrum when it comes to fees, it's quite high fees if you are using the 2FA feature of Electrum. I remember when I set up my 2FA Electrum wallet before, I run the Electrum app offline for security safety and then copy the wallet file in an online PC. I don't know if that is still the process of making a 2FA wallet on Electrum.

For a proper guide on suing it, this FAQ might help you to understand more. Electrum FAQs  (https://bitcoinelectrum.com/frequently-asked-questions/).

You might have downloaded the "Stand-alone" version which as the name implies: works by itself without installing.

From this:

You seriously need to check your keyboard for non-responsive/hard-press buttons.
Specially the 1-4/7-0 non-numpad buttons that's usually the first to malfunction when there's an issue with the wire/usb ports.

I'm a user of electrum application wallet you really can't click the next button if you didn't complete the seed phrase also if you want to use your electrum wallet came from the computer and use to their application still the same but the most important is the seed not the password.

After I transfer from PC to mobile they need is the seed and you will set a new password to your electrum app.

It's true.

Next button will be hidden (in Grey) when you are in 2 situations:
  • Create wallet and do seed-confirmation step
  • Recover a wallet with backup seed

IMO, his case proved once again that 2fa option in Electrum is bad to choose when creating the wallet.
Why? ???

If he had had a "normal" electrum seed, he still would have had the same issue of the "next" button being unable to be clicked... as he had the seed incorrect. It had nothing to do with the wallet being 2fa.

Ok I got it you are obviously spot-on, the seed was incorrect. Newbie in panic mode! Thanks for your help folks.

How many phrases in your seed?
It should be 12 words seed if it's below 11 words then the next button will not work.
But if you have the right 12 words seed phrases then it should be work.

Can you try to check your backup seed if it's correct you can use this below to find the right words of your seed phrase maybe some words are wrong spelling? So to make it right use the link below to change them and put the right words.

If it still doesn't work you might be using a different Electrum wallet or maybe a fake wallet. So make sure that you downloaded it from the right source from electrum.org if not then you are using a fake Electrum.
