Title: HOW TO BUY OR SELL HERE...
Post by: SatsLife on September 23, 2020, 06:24:08 PM
This thread is for anyone, new or old to BitcoinTalk, that is interested in buying or selling bitcoin collectibles, and the unwritten rules of how to go about doing so.

This post will be updated continuously and compiled with suggestions from members who respond to this thread.  :)

Please post any info that you think should be added.... :D

Edit 5/12/21 PLEASE READ: As Bitcoin and crypto continue to soar, so do the number of scammers as well as the reward for them to do so. This allows scammers to put forth more effort and sophistication into taking your bitcoin. Recently there have been numerous attempts across all social media platforms messaging unsuspecting victims posing as forum members. Getting scammed can happen to the best of us (and it has) so please stay vigilante. NO FORUM MEMBERS HERE WILL MESSAGE YOU ON ANY OTHER PLATFORM, IF THEY DO THEY ARE SCAMMERS. Here is a thread on what to look for and how to avoid being scammed: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5322537.msg56521101#msg56521101

This is a work in progress.

SELLING

1. In the subject line of your post please label, in brackets, what type of sale you are conducting. [AUCTION], [SALE], [RAFFLE], [WTS], [WTT].  (WTS = Want to Sell) (WTT = Want to Trade)

2. Post a picture of the item(s) you want to sell, along with your username and date/Block height next to the item. IF YOU ARE SELLING VIA DMS ONLY AND NOT A PUBLIC SALE OR AUCTION THEN MAKE SURE THE PICTURE CONTAINS BOTH YOUR NAME AND THE SELLERS NAME ALONG WITH THE DATE AND/OR CURRENT BLOCK HEIGHT. This helps to verify you actually have the item you want to sell. If you are new to the forum, post the picture at https://talkimg.com/ (https://talkimg.com/)or imgbb.com and provide a link or use BBCode to post.  Don't worry if your picture does not show up in the post. Someone with a rank higher than 'newbie' will likely add it to the thread in the following posts for you.

3. Select an end time for the auction, including timezone. This should go without saying, but changing the ending time after the auction has started is a cardinal sin. Adding a countdown timer is always appreciated. If the countdown timer fails to give the proper time for any reason, then the stated time will be used for the auction end time. Countdown timer can be found here...https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/create

4. List your price or starting bid in BTC, as well as the MINIMUM bidding increment.

5. List a payment address.

6. Is shipping included? If not, how much extra is it? What country/region of the world is your item shipping from? (this helps buyers quickly determine whether or not they would like to bid/buy)

7. Allow buyers to utilize escrow service. This especially goes for new accounts. See below for common escrow procedures.

8. If you are selling multiple lots in the same auction please specify in the sniping rules if all lots are extended with any bid or not. (To make life easier for bidders to follow the action,  it's best to extend all lots after each bid)

NOTE: Considering this is a dedicated section for collectible items, hosting auctions on such items here will make everything more accessible. Posting them in Auctions board -> https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=73. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=73.) is entirely optional. The OP and posts within the topic in that section cannot be modified or deleted

BUYING/BIDDING

1. Please keep posts limited to bids or questions regarding the item for sale.

2. If there are multiple lots for sale please specify which lot you are bidding on, followed by your bid.
ex: Lot 1 @ 0.02 BTC

3. To avoid confusion, please post an exact bid. Posting an increment to someone's previous post, especially without quoting that bid, can lead to unnecessary problems.

4. Please do not edit your bids once they are posted. Instead, post again and state the issue. The Auctions board by default does not allow for edits, but being able to host auctions here in the collectibles section is convenient. Lets try and keep it that way. Thank you!

ESCROW

Ok, so you just won your first auction. Now what? Do you send pmt to the seller in the hopes that they ship your item? No. Just utilize a trusted escrow member. Here are two recommended bitcointalk escrow service threads: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2439910.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2439910.0) & here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=276897.0
 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=276897.0)
1. Inform the seller that you would like to use an escrow service.
2. The seller and yourself will contact the escrow and let them know you would both like to utilize escrow.
3. Escrow member sends a group pm stating the terms and payment address
4. The buyer sends winning auction bid to the escrow plus any fees
5. The seller ships item to escrow
6. Upon arrival to escrow, the funds get released to the seller and item is reshipped to buyer.

SNIPING

- Sniping rules can sometimes get confusing, especially if there are multiple lots in the same auction. (as we saw with the Gold Halving Coldkeys auction)

example: Any bid made within the last 10 minutes of the auction ending will extend the auction by another 10 minutes.

What does this mean exactly? What if there are 5 bids placed within the last 10 minutes of the auction? Does that mean there are 50 minutes added to the end of the auction?

It is much easier to follow an auction as a bidder knowing you have 10 minutes from the last bidder and the clock restarts with every bid. Feel free to copy and paste. Maybe eventually we can all just post "10 minute standard sniping rule" in our auctions and understand exactly what it means...

1. 10 minute standard sniping rule - Any bid made within the last 10 minutes of the auction, will restart a 10 minute clock for each bid thereafter. Meaning if the auction ends at 7pm and a bid is made at 6:51, the new ending time is now 7:01. If a following bid is then made at 6:55, the new ending time will be 7:05. This will continue until 10 minutes have elapsed from the last bid.

2. 15 minute standard sniping rule - Any bid made within the last 15 minutes of the auction, will restart a 15 minute clock for each bid thereafter. Meaning if the auction ends at 7pm and a bid is made at 6:46, the new ending time is now 7:01. If a following bid is then made at 6:49, the new ending time will be 7:04. This will continue until 15 minutes have elapsed from the last bid.

3. 1 hour standard sniping rule -  Any bid made within the last 1 hour of the auction, will restart a 1 hour clock for each bid thereafter. Meaning if the auction ends at 7pm and a bid is made at 6:25, the new ending time is now 7:25. If a following bid is then made at 6:42, the new ending time will be 7:42. This will continue until 1 hour has elapsed from the last bid.

Reposting this topic as a self moderated topic in order to keep organized and newbie friendly. I did not realize this post was going to be so welcomed by the community, and this brings some unwarranted attention and posts that clog up the thread making it more difficult for newer members to navigate. I am still fairly new myself, which is why I started this thread, for people like me  :D

Please do not get offended if I delete your post.

Thank you,

Please do not use that terrible auction template. In my opinion, it's absolutely hideous and looks unprofessional. :P

Just use the simple list I use, which will look a lot nicer (https://i.imgur.com/FvJChlU.png).
Code:
[b]Starting bid[/b]: 0.008[BTC] with minimum increments of 0.0005[BTC]
[b]Shipping[/b]: Not included. Shipping will be based on location and preference
[b]End date and time[/b]: [url=https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20200903T23&p0=16&msg=Auction+end&font=cursive&csz=1]Thursday, 3 September at 23:00 (Amsterdam Time)[/url]
[b]Sniping[/b]: Bids in the last 10 minutes extend the auction to a maximum of 10 minutes after the last bid.
[b]Payment[/b]: I only accept Bitcoin and payment must be send to [i]bc1q0skm6sqtqwh030ay9va78punmd6gzat5hpzvzf[/i]
[b]Other[/b]:
[list]
[li]Proof of funds or a collateral may be asked from new bidders to be eligible to bid on the auction.[/li]
[li]I reserve the right to reject bids from or deny sale to any individual for any reason.[/li]
[/list]

In fact, I highly recommend just copy-pasting my style: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5190862 :D

aaand - repeat ;D

for my auctions i have always used this timer, which i think is very easy to set:

Code:
[img width=200 height=80 alt=image loading...]https://seanja.com/secret/countdown/gif.php?time=2020-12-31-23:59[/img]

simply insert this line in the auction and set the time until when this auction should run - an example:

https://seanja.com/secret/countdown/gif.php?time=2020-09-30-21:59

the timer now shows how long it is to the end of the month (cest zone)

Keep the codes coming people!

@Mitchell, there are no dates, usernames, block heights, or shoes on your head in your photos. This might not be the best example for new accounts.  :D

@Cygan, Thank you for posting the clock code! I will use this all the time.

@SatsLife
nice to read it👍👌

i hope that soon other users known here, who often start an auction, will use this nice and simple timer
this is definitely a big relief for the participants of an auction

Mods- I think it would serve this board well if this were pinned at the top. I know first hand how it can be intimidating when you first show up here ( and have had many others tell me the same ) and these guidelines I think could help this board to grow a bit/as well as make the board more orderly for you guys.

I don't think there is really much of a need for this pinned topic anymore, and Sats thread here would basically be replacing it ( "Collectable auctions can be posted in this section! Use [Auction] tag" ).  Appreciate your consideration.

Great post Sats this is very helpful! I know that for the single auction I held it was a bit confusing on how best structure it but with these templates anyone new will be golden.

LOL Rainbow Sky its ridiculous that you have managed to comment and annoy so many people in so many threads in such a short period of time. Truly impressive!

Usually how escrow works is
1) escrow sends a group pm stating the terms and payment address
2) the buyer pays
3) the seller ships
4) upon arrival, the funds get released to the seller

This is a work in progress.

SELLING

1. In the subject line of your post please label, in brackets, what type of sale you are conducting. [AUCTION], [WTS], [SALE], [RAFFLE], [WTT]

2. Post a picture of the item you want to sell, along with your username and date and/or Block height next to the item. This helps to verify you actually have the item you want to sell.

This will continue until 1 hour has elapsed from the last bid.

Suggestion - There is some code floating around here that allows you to place the dollar (not sure about others such as euro etc) amount you want to receive for an item you’re selling that will then spit out it’s bitcoin equivalent. I’m not sure how often it updates however, every 1-5-10mns or if it’s live. But adding this in the OP for people to be able to use would be cool.

Anyone able to provide the code? Gracias.

thank you for the info provided on OP, I have the issue of I have some physical coins to sell, but have not done so due to the "postal scam" where the receiver claims it was pealed and cashed out before arrival, what steps can I make to reduce/illuminate this issue, thanks.

use an escrow to receive, validate, verify the coins before they re-ship to the buyer. Also - if you know the address of the coin and ship it tracked, pretty easy to see when it was peeled and swept as it will be either before it arrived or after it arrived.

Also place on main OP....when messaging people and asking for information the least a person can do when getting the answer is responding with a simple thankyou especially if that said person has to look into acquiring the right information and also spending their precious time looking it up.

2. Post a picture of the item you want to sell, along with your username and date/Block height next to the item. This helps to verify you actually have the item you want to sell.
A warning for buyers: you should not rely on this (anymore) as proof of ownership. It has happened at least once that someone fell for a scammer's request to write the scammer's username on the picture:
rajubhusal asked djjacket to put his (raj) name on the image. he then used that image as "proof" to eseayan of "ownership"
Really sorry this happened to you eseayan.
I remember a case in which someone signed a message with someone else's name, that was also used to scam. This is just as bad: it's common practice on the Collectibles board to ask for a photo with a handwritten username and the current date as proof of ownership.
You have single-handedly made this entire concept useless by doing this:
https://loyce.club/other/imageusedtoscam.jpg
(screenshot taken by LoyceV from this link (https://ibb.co/DMWcYJm))
If it happened once, it can happen again so I wouldn't rely on this as proof of ownership.

Putting both names on there should solve the problem....   From: SatsLife ---> To: LoyceV  Date/block height

No one should ever be writing and displaying someone else's name and date with coins to sell.

Edit: this only pertains to non-public sales via DMs. Otherwise the scammer would risk being exposed in a public auction. Putting your own name and date is fine for public auction or sales I think.

That would be better if the buyer requests to write his name.

As a seller writing your own name is fine, but as a buyer you shouldn't rely on it. Even if it's a public auction, it may take a while before someone notices something fishy.

Yeah what's fucked up is this happening https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5367587.msg58286006#msg58286006

Don't know why someone would put someone else's name on their coins?  ???

You would need to read the whole thread to see how bad the fallout was.

But if ever in a large deal, I would as a buyer or as a seller...reach out if possible thru other channels such as Discord...or text, signal or even email....to really confirm all is legit....so the hacker or man in the middle attack is prevented from scamming anyone.

Yep, I questioned the same thing too in that thread, might have been the 1st to bring it up.  Looks like it was a 2 or 3 way fuckery or set up to look that way by perhaps 1 bad actor.

Scarce.city is another great place to buy btc items, but you have to submit to sell, you cannot just list anything you want. What were you thinking about selling? The forum is a great place for us collectors and the best place to sell an item. An escrow service here can help you sell/auction pretty easy if you are worried about scammers. Krogothmanhattan and Minerjones are both highly recommended.

Good question. If it's bitcoin related then it should be fine. i.e. rarepepes, raretoshi, etc.

If they are ETH or other altcoin and not bitcoin related art then I would venture to say no.

Only if it's possible to pay with Bitcoin, anything else needs to be in the Altcoin section. Example, if you are just posting a link to OpenSea, it will be moved.

This is Bitcointalk and you are in the Bitcoin marketplace section after all.

does https://www.timeanddate.com/ still work?

I've also sent SatsLife a PM asking him to add a line about the EDITING of auction bids to head these off at the pass (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5385431.msg59284753#msg59284753).

I'm actually a bit surprised it's been so long since we've run into this in this fashion. In the "Old days" auctions were run in the "Auctions" subthread, where editing of posts is disallowed. Unfortunately, they can't do this with the collectibles section, as I remember it being requested long ago if the title had [AUCTION] in it, but nobody/theymos would make the change/mod... 🤷‍♂️

Hello,

I'm currently searching to sell a Casascius 1 bitcoin.
I have put my announce on "Collectibles" section.

I have been reached by one member (Koil). He has proposed to discuss directly about the coin on Telegram and directly proposes a price for the coin (after checking the pics).

I'm a bit suspicious because of your thread about it.

He proposed to use an escrow pretending that it's impossible to be scammed if we use an escrow from the official list :
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=855778.760

However after checking, the last post was from 2021 and said that a lot of escrows mentioned there were now inactive.
I made him the remark that the list was a bit outdated and he argues that :
"It's the first and only one official list. There is no other official escrow list"

Sounds strange to me. What do you think ? Can I trust this member ?

Thanks for the input.

However, that doesn't really answer to my question ...

Do you think I can trust the member (direct use of Telegram, provide an outdated escrow list, etc ..) ?

I would like to have the opinion of some members.

Thanks for the input.

However, that doesn't really answer to my question ...

Do you think I can trust the member (direct use of Telegram, provide an outdated escrow list, etc ..) ?

I would like to have the opinion of some members.

Thanks.

You can check Koil’s trust ….

Personally I wouldn’t do any deal off the forum. Like a lot of members have mentioned - minerjones is a very trusted member and does a lot of escrow work with collectibles. Perhaps it’s worth PMing him

Is there anything bad with my trust or something ? :) Because i have done around 10k last 2 months in this forum from trades?
Which i can clearly prove with proofs of payments and everything :)
Telegram, WhatsApp or any messanger is just the same like message here.
Scammers are everywhere, and you can't say that people in Telegram are scammers because that's just an message software :)
It doesn't matter you use telegram or any other message software actually with a newbie who can send only 2 messages per day makes the communication way better.
Also, how so everyone around claiming that Telegram is used for scams consider EVERYTHING around including the forum and the pms itself have been used for scams always?
I have done more than 10k trades with MiLkz and Heisenberg63 in TELEGRAM. All of them were successful.
Are you calling me a stupid person or the legit sellers like Milkz And Heisenberg bad because we all use Telegram?

as for bad about your trust? Not exactly, you do not have negatives - but you also do not have any positives - only a couple neutrals.

you realize the first person you mention states that their trades have been successful however they still recommend that people use escrow. And the second one, you actually opened a scam accusation against them.

So these two may not be the best examples for you to use as "successful trades"

The problem with telegram is that people will message someone on telegram claiming to be someone from here and they actually are not that person on the forums. If dealing with someone on the forums that is unknown to you (or maybe even if they are known) it is best to keep the deal/communications here on the forums.

I have many reasons to open scam accusation against many things and people but it is not also useless but a time waste.
As OgNaSty says in one private conversation, even the admin of the forum do not care bout it, why should i care to go against anyone consider i do not care about the forum at all.
Keeping the deal/communication here in the forum is useless just the same way that doing it outside the forums.
There was so MANY people scammed inside and outside the forum, and none of us, you, me or anyone can do shit about it.
P.S: By default forum restrict newbies communication with dms or posts per day it is more than obvious that everyone will look for faster way of communication. And consider the dead market of the forum which is like that from years, it is more than ignorance to call any other communication method a scam (telegram, icq, messanger) and etc.
Nothing else than useless topics that's repeating from ages, from people desperate for merit and re-sellers in the digital market.
This place is long time dead just because of the abusive trust system and the non-sense rank system also.
And not in last place the non-moderated scam reports.
